    Wow just seeing this out of the box ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

      That’s a scissor set and that’s really not good to do. If your fishing dries or drifting nymphs you trout set, or jerk the rod in an upward motion. If your fishing streamers you jerk the line whilst keeping the rod pointed towards the water, and only after is the hook is set do you raise the rod

    Usually there are 4 types of line on a fly rod: first Dacron (backing), then the floating fly line, then a tapered leader, and lastly tippet. Tippet is what you cut off every time you put a new fly on.

    That "leader" knot is what got me.
    In all seriousness though, the most important part of the cast is smooth acceleration to a sharp stop+pause at the front and back. That will give you better distance, prevent the line from piling down on the water, and give more accurate delivery. For catch-all flies, you can't go wrong with Woolly Buggers as subsurface and Royal Wulff or hoppers as a dry.

  • @drewskyfasho
    @drewskyfasho 4 года назад +12

    Great stuff! Couple tips for new fly guys: make sure your reel has Dacron fly backing before you put the fly line on. Leaders are generally tapered with the skinny tippet end of the line on the fly end. To avoid changing and buying leaders all the time you can add new tippet (sold separately) to the tapered leader. This keeps your leader in new condition and long enough to be stealthy. The other big tip is to watch and time your backcast to avoid being too abrupt- if you shock your cast strokes you’ll get mini knots in your tippet. Tight lines !!

    For panfish, best approach is probably a dry-dropper rig. Maybe a #14 or #16 elk hair caddis (dry fly) on top and prince nymph (a nice terrestrial-ish attractor pattern) maybe 16” beneath. You’ll smash those fish all day long. The dry fly also doubles as an indicator, since it’ll drown instantly if something takes the nymph.

    Hey, FirstStateFishing! Fly fisherman here.
    I personally tie my own flies, but if you want to buy flies that bluegill are more likely to be able to bite with their tiny mouths, I recommend a size 14 hook/fly or smaller.
    Also, as far as bass, they make fly poppers. Top water bass fishing with a fly rod is awesome.
    Before you fish for bass, I’d get a 8 weight rod just in case you hook a big one.
    For setting the hook, raise the top of the fly rod up for smaller fish, and strip the line while pointing the rod at the fish for bigger ones (mostly for either big freshwater fish like Pike, or salt water).
    Fly fishing definitely takes practice, but you’ll grow to love it for sure. Good luck!

    Ok, so i doubt you will see this but if you do then here's some info. The first few flies you where using are dry flies, they're not supposed to sink, the main point of those are for them to stay on the surface, if you move your line back and forth in the air without the flying hitting the water you can keep them dry. When you set your hook do it right away and dont wait, set the hook by lifting the rod and pulling some line with your hand at the same time. Fly rods also aren't meant for flipping the fish onto the bank, when you have a larger fish keep tension while releasing out some fly line, and grab the fish with your hand. If it's a small bluegill you can just lift it out of the water with your rod. Hopefully this some what helps.

That’s not really the primary motion, but you can jig a bit to get some bounce while you strip the line in short pulls. Also like others have said, pull the slack out of the line with your left hand while you set the hook with the rod. Or you can just strip set. Hope I make sense

    One. Buy a landing net. If you keep lifting fish like that on your fly rod you'll break another one.
    Two. Practice casting on some grass, ideally with someone who can show you how to cast.
    Three. Watch some videos on setting up fly reals and terminal tackle.
    Four. Speak to someone in your local fly tackle shop they will advise on suitable flies to use locally.
    Five. Keep on enjoying your fly fishing. You caught fish without any of the above, but I think those points will let you enjoy it more.

    Poppers are great for bluegills too, and they also sell larger ones for bass. One hint -- when you're carrying a fly rod to your spot, carry it butt-end first with the rod pointing behind you. This way you won't snag your rod tip while you're walking. Tying your own flies is also fun and very addictive.

  • @MayheM_72

    More fly fishing! I have caught more bluegills and bass on a fly than I have trout. If nothing else, it gives you casting practice.
    As for the hookset, it takes practice. It's a combination of pulling on the flyline and lifting the rod. NOT a hard hookset like you're bass fishing!

    When you fly fish please strip the line in to give action to your flies. And keep stripping the line, that way setting the hook will be very easy, and you won’t have to worry about timing. Can’t you see the position of the hook on a fly it faces down not up, that’s why you strip the fly line to set the hook.

    I typically don’t set the hook on panfish. They usually turn and swim to deep water after they take a bite. That turning usually sets the hook right in the corner of their mouth usually. I will set the hook when I catch a bass, but honestly it’s just a little tug. Usually just lift the tip of the rod up. Keep making fly fishing video. Also may want to watch mad river outfitters series on getting started with fly fishing. He has a video dedicated to fly line, leader and tippet. It’s actually really important that you have it rigged correctly if you’re worried about the consistency of you cast. Keep it up man!

    For setting the hook, simply strip line down, and pull back on the rod with the other hand at the same time, keeping tension, in one motion. Anything realistic and bug looking should work fine for panfish, and bass. Also bait fish looking streamer flies should work as well. Flies do not need to look ultra realistic for fish to bite them, either! I tie some very simple looking flies, and fish bite them no problem. When it's colder out, the water is cold, and the fish are slow, tiny fuzzy nymph flies will work on panfish, in shallow ponds like that. You should go back to that pond in the colder months, and try fishing tiny nymph flies, slowly. It's one way to get fish when they are really slow, and won't bite on anything else.

  • @sanjuanriverflytyer9389
    @sanjuanriverflytyer9389 3 года назад

    Nice video! Nice little panfish you caught there. I primarily fly fish more than anything right now. What I would recommend is try looking around you to see what bugs surround you. Like the dragon fly or damselfly if it's a blue color. At that time of year look for in still water look for water boatman, dragon fly and damsel fly nymphs. You might want to look for terrestrial insects such as grasshoppers, ants, beetles or any insect from land. Especially after rain or wind. Those will fall into the water because of this. Be aware if you're fly fishing top water dry flies to put floatant on. Also, the rod that you bought is flimsy because it's a slower action rod meaning it flexes more. You just gotta be more patient on casting. I know this being a custom fly rod builder. I also tie my own flies to match what bugs are in my area too. For bass, you can also throw streamers which are flies that imitate meaty items such as leeches, crawdads, baitfish, and among others. You might want to even try to throw a mouse, frog, or a popper fly pattern for bass too and watch them smack it on the top! Now tying flies for bass and bluegill can be quite hard to tie depending on what you tie. Tying flies requires patience and a lot of practice. I've tied flies for 3 years now and have gotten really good at it. Also, my favorite bass flies are wooly buggers, crazy dad, zonkers, clouser minnows, Dave's hoppers, foam beetles, ants. For panfish, prince nymphs, pheasant tail nymphs, foam beetles, ants, crickets, and many more.

    I've been fly fishing for a few years now, it can be frustrating to learn but once you do it opens up a lot of options. It could be that you're using a VERY light weight rod in that video, probably a #3 or lighter, works really well if you are using lightweight fly line for small fish under a couple pounds, or it could be a fiberglass rod which have a lot more bend to them. I BELIEVE that first fly you are using is an ant, at least it looks similar to the ants that I have in my fly box. The second fly I is supposed to mimic a minnow, either let it sink or put a split-shot about 18in-2ft up the line and strip retrieve. For your hook sets I prefer to strip set the hook, but if you don't have a bunch of line out you just need to raise the rod tip and keep it high. If you are fishing a creek or river learning how to mend so the fly moves in the current looking natural is really important. If you're fishing dry flies or still water you can twitch the rod tip once every so often with a dry fly to give it JUST a little movement and life, it can entice a fish that's losing interest into striking. I didn't see any in the video so if you haven't purchased some by now you should look at getting some floatant (I use Gerke's Gink), it'll keep your dry flies from getting wet, allowing them to stay on the surface instead of sinking once they get wet. If you're interested in fishing for bass on a fly rod you should pick up some larger streamers and some poppers, after you get a heavier rod though lol.

    Hi dude 😎 , so glad to see a young guy like you interested in fly fishing, but there are a lot of things for you to learn, first you have to know the differences between all types of fishing rods weight and line which is so important, next you have to learn about the type of line that you have to use for each situation, after that casting Technics and the type of fly that you should or shouldn't use in each situation, last but not least which is some times even more important than your setup is the presentation of your fly, if you are planning to become a successful fly Fisher man I strongly suggest you to watch some videos for beginners and then hit the water. Good luck and take care

    Nice outfit it's amazing that the cheap stuff now is not bad. You were supposed to put fly line backing and then the fly line and then the leader which doesn't have to be a fancy leader 8 to 10 lb fluorocarbon if you got it. The deer hair dragonfly which can be used on a sinking line more effectively is one of the best. You can strip set the hook by pulling the line in the big pool and keep control of the line with your right index finger. Float tubes would give you many more fishing options and are quite convenient. Personally I just troll a fly and I've caught 27 28 29-in rainbows in the local stocker Lake. Which is consistently produces the biggest trout on Vancouver Island BC. I just let mine go but it is what it is. By the way the 29 incher did about a 200 yd run with zero drag on the reel and the island got in its way. And all of wooly bugger like the one in my picture would be ideal but there is many other good flies.

    You have to get backing line for your reel before you put fly line on and attach braided loops to both ends also while you are fishing hold your rod towards the water more and as you get a bite pull the line and lift slowly your rod shouldn’t snap fly rods are made to be more flexible so you can cast

    To set the hook you just lift the rod up but don’t set it until ur line has went tight, and no you do not jig with a fly rod😂it’s all about the line retrieve pattern, also keep ur rod tip point to the sky when fly fishing or fish come off a lot easier

  • @fishyy7062
    @fishyy7062 4 года назад

    Strip set the hook, which means you can either just rip the line in or pull the rod up and pull the line.

    @FirstStateFishing Dude if you want to get some flies you should hit up A Marblehead fly fisher in Centerville DE (right by Wilmington) the guy who runs it, terry, is a super nice guy and will give you local knowledge and tips to help you get better at fly fishing

    You got to buy flys that are made for bass and striper or what fish you catch... Fly lures is like other lures.... What you trying to catch you have to buy that

  • @menotyou816
    @menotyou816 4 года назад

    You should try a wet fly with a weighted head like a nymph. Then cast it out and long slow pulls to retrieve.

    That looks like fun! I have a similarly junky fly fishing combo from Martin and I also wreck the bluegills at my local pond 🤣 My husband is a real fly guy though.
    I’d say watch a few videos from Orvis; they’ve got a whole beginners series that’s really great. We also have a few on our channel but they’re more about teaching kids the basics than real tutorials.
    Just keep it up and keep learning! And hey, we aren’t too far away so I bet my husband would enjoy meeting up on the Delaware & showing you how he does it.

    Hey first state I have watched your videos for over a year now. I love your new surf videos in Delaware. I fish in New Jersey a lot and love to go down to sea isle. It’s a great kingfish spot and I think it would be awesome if you tried it out. My favorite spot is under the bridge or whale beach

    Look for bugs in the water and on the plant near shore. Match the hatch. Check spider webs in plant to see whats in them. There you go.

    Id like to see you fly fish more. Just 3 tips 1.try keeping your rod tip down while stripping line 2. To set the hook pull on the line and raise your rod tip straight up. But not to hard. 3. Try different flies! Dry flies and streamers are fun to use. Try getting to leech pattern flies. Trust me they don't fail haha

    Keep your rod tip close to the water then when you start pulling your line in there won’t be so much slack which will help you set the hook better
