8'0" Rod & Size 5/6 Reel
The most complete fly outfit in the marketplace. Martin 5/6 rim-control fly reel, 3-piece 8' 5/6-weight rod and a custom fly assortment. Martin has long been a firmly-anchored rock in the river of fly fishing, introducing thousands of anglers to this rapidly-growing sport. Included with this combo is the booklet, “Fly Fishing: Getting Started”. In the booklet you will find tips on how to cast, how to tie knots, and basic care for your equipment.
Lightweight Aluminum Spool & Frame
The aluminum spool and durable aluminum frame provides great strength under pressure and more durability than plastic spools. The aluminum is able to handle the stress put on the spool by monofilament or fly fishing line.
Complete Fly Fishing Starter Kit
Martin complete fly-fishing kit includes a fully loaded reel (backing, line, leader), 8-foot 3-piece 5/6 weight rod, 6-piece custom fly tackle assortment, and a getting started booklet. Развлечения
As an actual fly fisherman that was so hard to watch 😂 loved the video
I know watching a beginner is funny. I like to teach them and go somewhere else so I dont have to watch while they practice!
Thank you so much for this video! I bought the same fly kit a month ago and just opened it tonight. Your experience gave me light.
Wes, your enjoyment on catching that bluegill on your new fly rod, pure joy. Brought a smile to my face!

I have been looking at it for a while this might be the sighn
Just bought it 😁
Thank you for posting this! This is Mt very first fly rod and i was struggling with it UNTIL you posted this so thank you!! 😊 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
very nice man. love seeing videos of people just starting fly fishing
Dude that’s was an awesome video! Just picked the combo up, I’m stoked to give it a whirl. Also that excitement with the first bluegill was top notch content!
Haha I’ve got two of those combos! My kids & I used them to learn fly fishing and we’ve caught a billion bluegills on them.
Hell yeah! Love the fly rod, when the going gets tough it always catches at least a perch or a 5 lb bass. Try a popper fly for bass. Fun! Thx man
I've never fly-fished, but am looking to start soon. Doing lots of research to understand the sport. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Here are some tips I've picked up and understood:
- Start by pulling a bunch of fly line off the reel and letting it pile up on the floor. (Don't be scared to let a bunch of line lay on the floor. Fly line is not like mono/fluoro/braid and doesn't tangle easily). Also, the amount of line you pulled out determines the distance you can cast because casting in fly fishing, the line doesn't come off the reel like traditional combos. You are whipping the thick fly line out there not the lure.
- To hold a fly combo you want the hand holding the rod to have one/two-finger(s) hanging out guiding the fly line like an extra rod guide (the rod should always be pointed towards if not touching the surface of the water).
- Use your reeling hand to guide the line. whip a bunch of line in front of your rod. This is just to move your previously pulled line off your reel to the front of the rod.
- With your reeling hand positioned behind your rod holding hand, strip the line and let it pile on the floor but leave more than your rod's length of fly line NOT the leader still in front of you.
- As you whip your rod back use your reeling hand to hold on to the fly line and pull towards your hip. (Kinda making that triangle shape with the fly line as if you were pitching for bass).
- Pause for just a second so all that fly line you left on the water in front of you has time to become airborne and travel behind you.
- After the forward swing guide the line towards your hand holding the rod and release the fly line. (Repeat the back and forth until all the line is cast for distance)
- To work a fly (with the rod always pointed down) use your reeling hand to strip the line and let it pile up under you. Don't reel in line. You will use this line for the next cast.
- To set the hook you will need to (Strip set) strip the line fast while pointing the rod tip up. You cannot rely on just the fly rod as it doesn't have enough energy to hook a fish and will rip the fly out of a fish's mouth.
- You can flight the fish without the reel just by stripping the line in. If the fish pulls hard, let the fish take up all the line you stripped and fight the fish using the reel. Always let the fish run when it pulls hard. Only strip in the line or reel in when the fish stops fighting. Fly tippet is often very thin can snap.
Casting methods: (youtube/google them I wrote an essay already)
- Roll cast (beginner-friendly and great for narrow bodies of water with trees behind you).
-Double hauling (the famous multiple false cast before the actual cast fly fishermen do. Used to gain distance or snap the water off their dry flies)
A lot of confusion here. Fly fishing is not hard. You do not whip anything, casting is often done close to the body, using for short casts. Long casts are not needed. Roll casts work every where, all the time, It gets your fly out.
Better to learn catching bluegills and bass.
I've been looking everywhere for videos on the Ozark fly rod and can find spit Loli would love to see the face off between the 3 I'm trying to debate which to get for my first fly rod awesome video keep it up👍
Love the edits and been actually thinking about fly fishing 🎣 👌🏼
my uncle got me one of those martin fly rods when i was younger it’s awesome!
Found this kit unopened at a yard sale for $20 this spring. I need to go try it out now!!
That was sweet can't wait to see more!
Just got the Martin kit at a pawn shop today for $20. Super stoked to try it out. Figured since I live in the fly fishing capitol I oughta learn lol
I started fly fishing apr of 23 and I bought that exact combo at dicks in June for $20-$30 and I still use it. It's a touch stiff to me but it's fun to use. The martin set I have. I seen you with it and knew the exact one
Cool video. Enjoyed the enthusiasm. I have this exact combo being delivered tomorrow (10/15/21). Just getting into fly fishing. This will be me soon. Glad I found this video. Truly enjoyed the video. I have subscribed to your channel. Will be looking for as much help as I can get. What is the secret to keep the rod sections from wanting to separate? Doing this in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Thanks brother. God bless.
PS: 11:30am, 10/15/21. FedEx just delivered my Martin Fly Fishing Combo. Everything looks pretty good for the price. Wasn’t expecting an Orvis outfit, so no disappointment at this point. Just wanted to share the news. Now tomorrow hopefully head across town and hit the Chippewa River. Thanks again for your video and information.
God bless.
That was my first kit as well 25 years ago, never learned to cast on it. Was just so bad I had to upgrade after a month. Was standing next to a dam, another guy came by, took one cast and said get rid of the crap lol. Once I got a new rod and line it was easy, new rod was also still under $100
thats really cool man love flyfishing! good vid :)
Well not gonna lie my friend I did start fishing using the flu reel style way back when I was just a grasshopper an let me tell you I still never mastered the art but I will say this it is fun!!!
I loved your video man. It was awesome and you have awesome character and personality.
I use the martin fly rod and I like it ,I a good rod for crappie, bluegill and bass ,I've caught catfish as well
Are those flies dry and do they float on the surface after many casts plz bro reply
I love Fly Fishing so much I tie my own flies and build fly rods, I live in Lufkin Tx.
Definitely had the line coming out of the reel in the wrong place, but you made it work!
I recommend these two channels if you are serious about getting into this.
1) for instruction and education: ruclips.net/user/Madriveroutfitters
2) for inspiration (fishing and filming): ruclips.net/user/WildFlyProductions
Would love to see more fly fishing as you progress!
Thanks for the 2 links you posted. Just getting ready to start fly fishing. I will definitely check those links.
Mad River Outfitters has videos from casting to line selection to leaders and tippets. Very thorough and well made. Good luck. If you get another rod in the future try a 9’0” or 9’6” you will find the casting easier. Have fun. Hope to see more videos.
Hit Hill Country rivers/creeks with a flyrod. Guadalupe Bass and Rio Grande Cichlids. Also check out carp on the fly, its bonkers.
Awesome, awesome video. Great positive energy and content. The part you threw the blue gill by the jaw, I'd wanna say you should avoid doing that as their jaw is not as strong as a bass' jaw and you can definitely can break it holding them by it and especially throwing them.
For a 8' rod get about 7 to 6 ft of furled leader to learn with. Makes casting so much easier. Plus switching the fly line to double taper reduces the learning curve.
I had the same problem to with the drag and my grandpa got to messing with it and he found it on the side where the handle is there’s a metal point on the real and you have to flick it to the side and it will turn the drag on😂 hopefully this helps
Yes! Love it when people branch out and give fly fishing a try! Great video!
You will always want the drag on. I don’t know why there is an option for it not to be on?
Other setting for quick spooling slack.
i have the same combo and i use it for when im around other people and not trying to make a lot of noise when taking line out or reeling
Oh man tbh even if you and dev just grabbed some coffee and had a sit down and just talked and rambled oh man I'd just sit and listen have a few laughs and sip on some nice ol coffee cause yiu guys are awesome either way but the big fishes are always a plus and a win!!!
Glad you got it upload!!
Thank you!!
Use to fly fish for Trout and Northern Pike up in Wyoming all the time. Since I moved to DFW I have only seen 2 people fly fishing. You did OK for your 1st time with no real instruction.
Thanks
Good stuff though I just bought one those off Amazon and hadn't touched once since I was a kid so I had to make some of the mistakes to lol
DUDE I love that spot I live in Az but come to white rock twice a year and that’s my spot right there lol
you grab the line, pull it in, then reel in the line, repeat, until you land the fish. suggested to bring a net when fly fishing.
What is the red twine used for in the lure kit?
The red yarn can be used to practice with since it doesn't have a hook. This way you don't hook objects, yourself or bystanders when practicing. When I first started, I practiced on dry land, and a pool. You can also use the red yarn as an "indicator" for flies that sink below the surface of water which is a little more advanced...
I'm a little late to the comment section, but my Martin kit just showed up today. I'll be throwing my first ever fly tomorrow. Hoping I don't end up tangled in the main with a fly stuck in the back of my head.
That’s so awesome! I wish ya luck haha that line can bet tangled easily 😂
I bought it and I'm excited
Enjoy the fly combo!
you are so entertaining. I have been fly fishing since I was 12. I do like that rod and kit , love the color. It looks pretty nice. You might want to watch some youtube videos .
Haha thanks !! Soon as I got home I watched a few and studied up haha. Definitely getting back out with it ASAP
Dude, ive been wanting to learn how to fly fish. Thanks for doing this!
Sir how light is this?
Can we do 3-4hrs of continues fishing on this combo?
Very light! You definitely can with this setup
cool just cast with your arm not your wrist and watch the line in the air so it straighten out before you swing again. love your vids
No you only cast with arm when you fly fish with two handed rods. On 1 handed fly rods most of the casting is done with small sudden wrist movements
@@Denofu i think with light flies that is fine but if you fish larger stuff like streamers then your wrist will get problems in the long run.
I need to get immediately
I don’t know if my one else voted to see the fly fish off but I want to see a comparison between the three kits at least!
When you hook up loop you're index finger over the line right where you're rods balanced and strip in line from behind you're finger loop from other hand and you're finger is you're drag have fun
Ozark trail at Walmart has a fly fishing combo. Has anyone tried that
Line needs to go over keep the clicker on hold the line between your pointer and middle finger on right hand and strip down from below but over all good job and good luck
Yes to the 1v1v1
Was that the academy in Georgetown?? I go to it a lot ?? That had a huge sale the other day all there floro was like 3 bucks I got 30 spools
No it is further north
@@WestinSmith oh ok it is set up exactly like the one In Georgetown I mean all the stuff is in the same spot exactly
@@WestinSmith do you know what Texas bass holes in they do huge bank fishing tournaments in Fort Worth and Dallas
When you are stripping in the line put the line around you index finger that is on the rod and pull below your finer
I have that exact rod
my first bass on the fly was a 4 big fish eat little baits
Are you the guy from the fishbrain add?
Yes 🤣
That button is too keep the tension on the line not your drag lol
How hard would you say this was to try learning it on the “fly”
I got lucky with knots a lot. An open space is the biggest key. You need much more room to cast. I should have definitely watched a few videos first!
@@WestinSmith open space you say? Sooooo by gathering this knowledge I’ll try it on a tree lined bank and blame you afterwards lmfao, watch for my upload to RUclips once I find an academy somewhere around lmfao
😂 bro 🙌
My first fly fish was a dink speckled trout 😂. Fly fishing is no joke, bring that baby to the salt and we’ll look dope together.
Haha I’m ready!
such a tuff watch. great video tho
Off to the fun adventures
Sometime you gotta throw technique out the window and just have fun.
NOT THE HOOOOOSSEE 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Use a 10lb leader for bass
Just bought
My new fly rod was $389.00 rod &reel combo
Check out this playlist. Just remember you are casting the line not the fly and after you cast then put the line under index finger and against your cork above the reel and use it as a drag of sorts while fighting the fish. Use your off hand as the retrieve between your index finger and reel. It will make it much better bringing in a fish. Really not bad for the first time. I took up fly fishing about 3-4 years ago and still learning the process. ruclips.net/p/PLQWrNcNbEVXaJST1gtRJf32UXCu9EO6a9
Here is a playlist of me fishing for stocked trout and bluegill. ruclips.net/p/PL6_RjtK8cVxFwffv7uKKGUVhjELmXxaj7
Please do a 1v1v1 fly fishing challenge
Throw a streamer. Bass will eat it up 😎
I’ll try them man!
Any pattern recommendations? 🤔
@@lorenzojones-raston243 if you live in dallas black with green works best for me
I got the same one and I paid 45$
Eva on a flyrod hurts my soul
Well too late now I just dropped 200 dollars on a fly fishing outfit I wish I would’ve watched this sooner
The clicking is more I bet to hear it, like a bait running reel
try tenkara
NOT one review on RUclips has yet to check the Spine on any cheap rod.....Which concludes to the Viewers the reviewer has no clue how to check for correct spine to guide setting the first Step in rod building .
😳
somebody have to buy that crap.
Dude, you need to cut back on the coffee and dial yourself back a bit. Fly fishing is chilled and relaxing. You're all jittery and sound like your just done a line of speed.
Let people fish how they want. You don’t like it? Click off. You don’t make the rules.
Watch some videos man. RUclips has plenty of em
You weren't supposed to use the reel you were supposed to strip the line
Of course its cheaper no cork and plastic real lol
dislike for stupid music and drumming at the beginning
Sick! Thanks for the comment
