    Try strip setting instead of trout setting. This means when you get a strike, set the hook by pulling the line with your stripping hand, instead of immediately lifting the rod tip. Once you feel the solid weight of the fish, then you can lift the rod tip and fight like mormal. This will be more likely to create a solid connection between you and the fish, but more importantly, if the fish missed the fly on it's strike, now it just looks like the fly made another pop rather than it looking like the fly literally flew away. Tight lines!

      Yea the strip strike is what I use for all my fly fishing when I first started I did what he did I didn’t get a single fish lol

      Trout setting??? Strip setting is how you trout fish, rod yanking is how you bass\pike with a spinning reel. Shorter stripping would help also to have a better chance of setting the hook and fish on....🐋

    • @willdenoble1898
      @willdenoble1898 Год назад

      @@jameslaw3740 you can rod tank for trout too, just not nearly as extreme as he did and your rod tank goes towards the fish’s tail to set hook in said fish’s jaw (think pulling the fish by its tail). Usually the yank set is about 1-2ft not 6ft like him.

    The beauty of fly fishing is that so few people use them that even in places with a lot of fishing pressure, they still have not seen flies.

      THIS! I just caught several small bluegill, sunfish, and smallies in a low river a few weeks ago that was crowded with other anglers throwing crankbaits. I was landing 3-4 fish between each of their combined landings. Funny because they were riding me for bringing a fly rod to that spot.

    As a fiy slinger longer than you are old i liked this video ,no i loved this video .i have more fly tying material i could ever use in a lifetime .i design different flys, poppers, plugs for fly fishing. but I'm now older and disabled but not helpless and hardly fish much anymore. my favorite poppers are all mine but any tyers out. there i use comel long floats from Walmart, taking out the center stims, with hobby knife cut into 4 pieces. cut Grove deep enough to hold wrapped hook, super glue.paint head,eyes,cote.with fingernail polish and for touchups. dress back to your liking. dont over do it because to much and when you pop it air and water is forced through the center hole and blows out air bubbles and that you want ,lots of disturbance. if thing legs make sure not to put through hole. use your imagination in making them .i have over 400 colors of various deer hair i dyed my self using rit dye. i still have recipes for 75 to 100 colors.let me explain .i salt down my fresh hides or peaces till dried. cut tail,belly, rump,back, neck or your decision into 3 or 4in square peaces.say 5 different sections will give 5different color tones. if you do 100 colors thats 500 dear hair colors. its not expensive to do. i will gladly share my color recipes free of charge .i almost forgot i use the same process for chicken feathers and i hane probably around 100 packs different colors. thank you for allowing this old man share with you.papa

    • @jackmcmanus1238
      @jackmcmanus1238 2 года назад

      I'd reccomend a 9' 7wt. An 8 wt would be a bit stiff and not as much fun for fighting fish, and a 10 foot is slightly more difficult to land fish on, plus it is significantly more difficult for casting in tight spots (close to trees etc.)

      @@jackmcmanus12388wt might be better for people who only use a few rods though. I have a 3, 5, and 8wt.
      3wt for small stream and panfishing
      5wt for river trout, but a very good do most things freshwater
      8wt for bass, pike, carp, salmon/steelhead, and maybe even some saltwater.
      I think that’s the trio that probably makes the most sense for most people.

      Tippet and leader are usually dependent on the size of the fly.
      It's
      hooksize / 3 OR 4 = tippet
      So if you're fishing with a size 12 fly, you'd want a 3x or 4x tippet.
      It's based on fly size because the strength of the tippet affects the presentation, accuracy, and range of the cast.
      Too big of a tippet and it flies farther than your fly. Too small of a tippet and your flies will dunk into the water (or the back of your head) before your line extends out.

    What is the weight of your fly rod? I am thinking about getting into bass fishing with a fly rod.

    You’ll hook more if you leave the rod tip down and pull straight back on the line. Raising the top works for trout, but pulling is much better for bass.

      9ft 5WT with a weighted forward floating line. So far my favorite lures are poppers and shad streamers for bass

    All the fish you caught had small bodies for the head size. Something is wrong with the pond. Maybe keep some fish to cut down on the number of bass. Were there any bait fish? Good video! Nice technique on waiting to set the hook.

    try tying on a circle hook. It seems to hook them better using your trout set

    You didn't hook those first 2 because you should strip strike hook set. Dam that jump was sick

    That first fish, the issue is you used your rod to set the hook when you should have used a strip set. You'll drive that hook in the fish's mouth everytime with a strip set.
