Try strip setting instead of trout setting. This means when you get a strike, set the hook by pulling the line with your stripping hand, instead of immediately lifting the rod tip. Once you feel the solid weight of the fish, then you can lift the rod tip and fight like mormal. This will be more likely to create a solid connection between you and the fish, but more importantly, if the fish missed the fly on it's strike, now it just looks like the fly made another pop rather than it looking like the fly literally flew away. Tight lines!
Trout setting??? Strip setting is how you trout fish, rod yanking is how you bass\pike with a spinning reel. Shorter stripping would help also to have a better chance of setting the hook and fish on....🐋
@@jameslaw3740 you can rod tank for trout too, just not nearly as extreme as he did and your rod tank goes towards the fish’s tail to set hook in said fish’s jaw (think pulling the fish by its tail). Usually the yank set is about 1-2ft not 6ft like him.
THIS! I just caught several small bluegill, sunfish, and smallies in a low river a few weeks ago that was crowded with other anglers throwing crankbaits. I was landing 3-4 fish between each of their combined landings. Funny because they were riding me for bringing a fly rod to that spot.

Just got a Shakespeare 7/8# 8' vintage fly rod and reel for $10. I don't if it's worth trying now on lake Murray during the winter... But I'm going to try.
I've never seen a bass jump that high! That was epic! Awesome video once again. I just wish the fishing was that good here in Ky. It's been very hot and dry for the past two to three weeks. The bass are not very active at all right now. It's been a real struggle to catch any. Hopefully we get a little rain soon and get them stimulated again.
Thanks man! But yeah the fishing here has been really slow as well. It’s be brutally hot and I’ve had to scrapped like 5 videos because I only caught 1 or 2 fish :/
I'd reccomend a 9' 7wt. An 8 wt would be a bit stiff and not as much fun for fighting fish, and a 10 foot is slightly more difficult to land fish on, plus it is significantly more difficult for casting in tight spots (close to trees etc.)

I do both at the same time. Can’t get rid of the instinct to set tf out of the hook like I did growing up on the bait caster

First day fly fishing and I got two bass! Thanks for the vid man learned a lot just from watching you.
Love how you release so gently because you fly fish, as compared to most fishermen who strictly bass fish who just toss em back XD
Best fish jump I have ever saw
Older video now but I really appreciate when I see CNR fisherman respecting the fish when they release them. Great content!
Bro, fly fishing top water for bass is just the best. Great video. Keep up the hard work!
