- Our goal was to attempt the impossible, hook and land a giant goliath grouper on fly fishing tackle. To my knowledge, no angler has ever accomplished this before. Goliath groupers are one of the toughest and strongest fish in the ocean. We started the day off fishing for false albacore (bonito) to use for bait for the goliath groupers. After catching half a dozen albies, we headed offshore to begin our quest for a goliath grouper on fly fishing tackle.

I just went sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River in BC for the first time in my life, and caught a couple of 6-footers... I always thought that people on the fishing shows who struggled to reel in the fish were faking... But having caught two beasts, I now know how hard it is to land them. I nearly got pulled out of the boat! Can't possibly imagine what a Goliath feels like. Surprised though that the rod didn't chip the side of the boat!

I am curious he said that fly rod was a 12 weight but I know you can actually get fly rods heavier than that such as 15 and 16 weight fly rods. I’d like to see them try this again with one of those
Generally use a 14 weight for marlin, so yeah you would be fine on a goliath.

You know you might try a fly reel with a gear ratio for offshore. I was looking at one the other day. Cast and everything same as any fly reel but hand crank has a gear to gear to the main spool.

Void you can catch some.of the biggest fish that swim in the ocean from the beach. sharks. but that's takes expensive gear. there's tons of 20+ pound fish that can be caught from the beach. practice, and take in as much knowledge as you possibly can

fly angler world records mean nothing. Sure it does take skill to find the biggest fish, but then once you find them you don't decide if they bite its luck that gets you there. Any idiot who gets on the right spots can catch a world record fish if they have the right bait and play the fish properly to the boat or shore.

I would love to fish with John (you too Josh dont get poopy). Watching his technique, he knows what he's doing. They neglect to notice his skill/knowledge. He even complimented you a couple times (which doesnt happen if someone is a TRUE ass) and admitted his stubbornness for using a fly with regular tackle out in the water. I enjoy watching people who are tough on each other, some people are just too sensitive.
My first time fly fishing out of St. Geroge in FL, my uncle kept catching reds I was casting at with his spinning tackle...yeah, it was frustrating while I was trying to learn fly fishing then. But that was our relationship. "Catch it on your first cast or ima get him!" He would say. Made me better, more accurate, and kept that fly rod in my hand ALL DAY trying to get better. I'd throw behind a fish, and while I was stripping it back in to cast again he'd throw a crab in front of it and hook it. Hahaha. Good times.

I loved this video dude I think you should do more fly fishing but inshore for like snook, redfish, bonefish, tarpon, and jacks I'm a fly fisherman myself and I recently went to the Bahamas fly fishing for bonefish and I landed a good sized lemon shark as well as a bunch of other species inshore fly fishing is fun one tip I have thought is don't palm the reel on a fly rod when the fish wants to run let it run, tight lines josh!!
