I did NOT know the cannonball could break if you held it too long. This is why I LOVE these older games so much. You still learn new things even more than 20 years later about them.
12:03 I just realized Krusha just turns his head to look at Klump. Probably the most unintentionally funny thing about the entire number. Great analysis BTW, Donkey Kong Country 2 is an absolute masterpiece.
Could not click on this video any faster. God I love me some K Rool, in all iterations. Also loved that ending, talk about busting a crystal coco-nut. I sure as hell was one of the many who put in for K Rool in Smash, and my dreams are now finally true. Feels gooooooood. Great Video as per usual, had me gasping for air at the dancing phase 3 K Rool.
Althought DKC3 is my favorite DKC from the SNES trilogy, I've to admit K. Rool's battle in DKC2 is one of the best examples of how to make a memorable final boss battle. I still have memories from the first time I fought him, it was a real pain in the neck, but it's so pleasurable when you finally beat him. Great video, lad ;)
What I appreciate with DK games (especially seen in Tropical Freeze) is that all patterns are similar, but never identical. Always keeps you on your toes.
Absolutely amazing video. I'm honestly surprised as to why you don't have more views/subscribers. This video was so relaxing yet so entertaining to watch due to how much effort you put into it in order to show us the true depth of a seemingly normal gameboy boss fight.
I actually never knew the purple clouds reversed the controls, i thougth they made the kongs run into K Rool. When i was hit by the clouds, i usually panic and tried to run from K Rool, which results in the kongs just running into him
You're real good at explaining such concepts. This is just the same concept I've learnt in curriculum but making it digestible for all is no small feat. Using the engagement graph as the spine of the video was a smart move too.
I love the final boss fight in DKC2. It took me so long to beat when I first played the game but man was I happy when I beat him the first time. I had gotten so many game overs.
Excellent video - I especially enjoyed the breakdown of typical boss-types between action platformers, that was really on point. And then K. Rool Duel remains one of my favourite boss battles of all time so I just had a great time with the video. It's so frantic and active, and that final kickback was such a stressful, tense cap to the whole fight.
Designing for patters, one of your best work sir. What I appreciate about this video is how you walk through King K Rool's entire boss battle. and what sets him apart from other bosses. He is cunning, uses his strength yes. But also advantages (DK 1. His armor, makes him invulnerable from the front so must wait until he opens up by throwing his crown). But here has a whole arsenal of tricks. The blunder gun, cannonballs with and without spikes and in different patterns, jet engine in the gun, become invisible and more. K Rool is as cunning as he is powerful.
This final boss of the DKC series is my favorite. The music really helps too. Also yeah, I remember thinking about why Krudgel is so low effort, even wondering either he or the secret world gate keeper came first. My likely guess is they were struggling to fill the Swamp world boss position and was running out of time.
Great video, although I wish you would’ve spent more time on the 3 different types of 2D platformer boss fights. But that’s just my personal bias-and this is YOUR love letter to King K. Rool.
When I was young I was also convinced K Rool was shooting the souls of the damned at me. I THINK they look more puff of smoke-y now? I dunno, whichever works.
I actually never knew the purple clouds reversed the controls, i thougth they made the kongs run into K Rool. When i was hit by the clouds, i usually panic and tried to run from K Rool, which results in the kongs just running into him
The bouncing ones have three heights (low, medium, and high). Keeping your positioning consistent's a good idea - K Rool never moves so you have no real need to approach him. Lows and mediums can be jumped over, while highs can be run under (though the medium's height makes the timing a bit trickier). Hope that helps!
@@pyrrhickong I figured that. I’m having trouble running under the high ones. I’m running into them where they bounce because I cannot guess beforehand at what horizontal position they will bounce. In the K. Rool fight from the first game, during the second phase, I used the mast in the background to make sure I was always standing at a node to dodge. In the fight from this game, is there some background object whose horizontal position always defines either a bounce or a crest?
@@StuartSimon Aah I see. Looking at it, if K Rool is shooting from the left (which should be his position if you one-phase the four preceding hits), it seems the high ones bounce right before they hit center - denoted by the jolly roger and the hanging lamp above. I believe you SHOULD be safe if you stay slightly right of that (aligned with the SNES controller in the background). For most of K Rool's phases, I try to stay close to center so that I have room to retreat if necessary, but everything remains reactable. If it also helps, his patterns are always consistent - if you memorize the pattern of the cannonballs, you never have to react. Hopefully that helps a little!

100% agree with you, I never knew you could mash out of the frozen exhaust.

lol
He just looks at him, probably thinking, "What are you doing?"

I love that they brought the blunder bus back

Indeed, K. Rool's DC2 fight is one of my favorite boss fights in any videogame.

I thought it was only me who the purple clouds impossible to avoid. Lol great video, that last canonball is such a dirty move, but it's so clever

2:32 That video is my spirit animal
Absolutely love your editing style man. I can tell this took a lot of effort to put together.👌

9:16 - Bashmaster Fight Theme! (DK Country Tropical Freeze: World 5 Boss)
I literally just beat DKC 1 and K Rool for the very first time and now I'm already thinking ahead to DKC 2...
I will never see the crossbones on K. Rool's pirate hat. All I see is the Xbox logo.
The DKC series is why I don't miss the Sonic series. I can only always come back, play them and still get a decent challenge.
It's the most difficult one. Took me a week to beat, trying every break time at work.

I've always saw the "exhausts" as ghosts with creepy faces. I'm pretty sure those are ghosts.
When I was young I was also convinced K Rool was shooting the souls of the damned at me. I THINK they look more puff of smoke-y now? I dunno, whichever works.
Not gonna lie, I always saw them as a ton of dead faces clumped together screaming to be free.
@@TarvouldsQuest Exactly! It sure looks like that. It is what I see as well.
I always saw them as some sort of flying gooey substance.
Looking at the sprites, I see faces...

if boom boom where is the hat is invincible! because hat science is the greatest science in the world!✋🏼
I retried that fight so many times before realizing you had to run when he tried to suck you in. I always tried to jump out of it
why does this only have 2k views? very well made video.
One detail you didn't mention about the DK barrels: They don't stay forever, once you hit K. Rool after they spawn, they blow up.
By the way, from what game is the music that plays at 1:18?
That's Parched Palace from Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. Surprisingly decent OST on that game!
@@pyrrhickong Thank you. That music is really good.
that fanart was good stuff lol
I grew up with DKC2, but never beat the game til a few years ago.
What's the game at 0:44?
Umihara Kawase (originally for the Super Famicom, on Steam now)
I’m struggling with this duel right now. I’m having trouble with the bouncing cannonballs. Do I need to just jump forward and run back?

He's not a gator. He's a croc lmao
i noticed kudgel is a derivative of king k rool in terms of patterns.
Muy buen video!
