A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones Author George R. R. Martin Interview on the Stone Men of Valyria and the history and lore of Greyscale
Love how all the clips keep heavily referring to Valyria while Martin keeps referring to the Rhoyne
I’m so confused
@@nyarlathotep13 because the stone men actually dwell in an area named Sorrows (a stretch of land beside the river Rhoyne), not the ruins of Valyria. The smoking ruins of Valyria is absolutely vacant, save for the monstrous fire creatures.
That's story compression for you, the show cut the entire Aegon Targaryen storyline out but reused bits and pieces of it elsewhere. That's how Jorah took over bits that Jon Connington was supposed to do and Sorrows and Valyria got smushed into same thing.
@@aleksandersuur9475 so glad D and D stayed true to the source material. The idiots had a huge hit on their hand by sticking to the books then decided not sticking to the books and cutting out all the fantasy elements would make their fantasy show more popular.
@@bloodaonadeline8346 they catered to the cringe fanbase side of the show halfway you know the people that make Videos like all the time Varys was an absolute sassy queen and then they dropped the ball on the dorne plot and it was all downhill from there
Valyria in the books: mysterious, smoldering ruins that no one who has ever gone to investigate has ever come back from
Valyria in the show: Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, merrily merrily merrily merrily, life is but a dream!
Can't even lay eyes upon the doom...
In Fire and Blood it is suggested that a Targaryan girl is carried to and back from Valyria by the last living dragon who escaped the doom.
Ginara013 and got fire worms inside her
@@noobdodarksouls9699 not 2 mention that balerion had a 6 foot gash on his leg that was still bleeding from being attacked by something
@@ginara0136 Balerion had a fuller existence than most humans.
I find it very funny that the show writers apparently thought a few lines explaining the ruined cities along the Rhoyne would be too difficult so they just made it Valyria instead. Never mind the mystery of what was in the Smoking Sea or what the Doom even was, just transplant an entirely different piece of lore in no one will notice or care lol.
And then made grayscale easily cured by the first answer sam finds in a book
@@lobsters12111 which is basically: carve that shit off but cutting of your infected hand won't work most times lol
@@CLCHRD I suppose that’s because most people had already touched the infected part before they cut it off.
@@lobsters12111 I wouldn’t say it was easily cured. Jorah has to pretty much be skinned alive to be cured
@@glowhoo9226 I would say compared to how they made it seem, it was an easy cure. Painful, sure. But Sam just read it and did it which I suppose is a testament to Sam’s intelligence but it just seemed too simple for me.
Ser Jorah Mormont kind of forgot about the Stone men, while he forgot them they certainly didn't forgot him
That sentence will haunt me now and forever. 😞😢
I like how George talks about Greyscale as if the details of the symptoms are hearsay, and not something he totally made up and knows all about. “If it affects the mind at all, then it can bring madness.” A small but honest commitment to his craft.
George has said multiple times that as a gardener writer that he has written many things that have dead ends so in a way he doesn't really know.
But he doesn't actually know, he's writing from the perspective of the characters. He doesn't even know if the gods are real.
Being born is also a slow death sentence
The biggest cause of death is birth
Ya gotta have fun while you can.😁
@@evanabbott2737 dude, the real fun begins on the other side ;)
I think I cut myself on the edge of this comment
Love how Martin speaks of his work almost like a historian.
Are we all going to ignore that they're using Nicholas Cage's likeness for the stone man illustrations?
Not you and me, bud.
Strange seeing as he is usually more of a bee-man kind of guy
@@whynottalklikeapirat NOT THE BEEEEEESSSS!!!
Yes, because you're one of these idiots who have a small subjective repertory of mental content that they use as a literal substitute of everything else they see, no matter how different. It's a sign of underdevelopment and self-centredness.
@@bfkc111 narc hypocrite
As with so many other things, the show made the cure of such a horrific and complex disease to be as simple and as easy as plucking and peeling of greyscale by some very basic instruments and tools
WTF on height on convenience!
Pretty sure there was more to it. The removal of the scales was just the first step.
@@alexanderbridges4448 Yeah. It was never revealed exactly but Sam stole a book with forbidden information and based on that went against his master's commands and did the first successful surgery in like hundreds of years or something for grey scale whereas it was otherwise considered too dangerous and therefore forbidden to attempt in the first place. They were encouraged to kill themselves, actually, it was that contagious. But SAM of course, who was probably my favorite character, was like "Fuck that this is Jorah we're talking about... even though I have no idea who the fuck he is, really"
@@alexanderbridges4448 There wasn't. The details of what Sam did were revealed by the Archmaester. He mentions exactly what Sam did after he sees that Jorah has been cured. All Sam did was remove the infected tissue and apply an unguent. It was complete nonsense, especially after Stannis' dialogue in Season 5 about having to search the whole world for an expert who could treat it. Yet now apparently all it took was for a trainee to scrape off the skin. It's dumb.
@@MarkHogan994 which sounds like a good way for the person applying the treatment to get grayscale themselves and spread it.
How Sam managed to not get infected himself is beyond me
And Sam cures it overnight with zero repercussion. Kinda diminishes the weight of the disease.
Not really. We never saw the full process. We saw him start filleting Jorah, but then there was a time skip.
The main risk of what sam did was infection. You’re cutting away dead skin and revealing the raw and vulnerable hide beneath it. Same likely had to apply a shit ton of ointments and pastes just to keep Jorah from getting an infection.
There’s also the risk that the shock of being skinned alive could kill you as well.
Then there’s the risk of the maester getting infected as well if they aren’t careful
@@glowhoo9226 I wasn't a fan of series 7, but I thought that scene was actually quite great (if you're into visceral reactions) in how it cut away to the soup/pie thing that was being dipped into. One of the most memorable moments of the whole show.
It wasn't Valyria in the books, it was an area known as The Sorrows, and it was far up the Rhoyne, away from Volantis and Valyria.
Of course, Ser Jorah didn't contract the disease in the books, either, it was Griff (Jon Connington), before Tyrion had even been kidnapped by Ser Jorah.
Is that Qyburn narrating?
"Sir Gregor, protect your queen!"
*head smash*
On my initial watch of the finale he died so fast I blinked and I said, What happened to Qyburn?
"You can't disobay me, you're a zombie!"
"haha brain go plop"
I admire a Stone Man who can actually stay afloat swimming xD
Reminds me of the San Lazzaro off Venice - a former Leper Colony.
1:32 is that my man Qyburn???
Ye
I like qyburn in the show I respect his intellect, but in the books he's basically a nazi doctor
Have the stone men fight the white walkers?
Congratulations, you have created stone wights.
I'm telling you, the great stone beast breathing shadow fire that Dany saw is Jon Connington🤷♀️.
A good theory
Never thought of that. Nice
Which chapter is that?
@@PittsburghSonido House of undying
@@PittsburghSonido I'm not sure exactly, but the chapter in ACOK where she visits the House of the Undying.
Solid video.
I love how season 2 has a literal SCENE where a woman (I believe her name is Quaithe) is painting a man with MAGICAL RUNES so that he can sail through Valyria. And then Tyrion and Jorah just go merrily rowing through in season 5 😂😂😂😂 great consistency D&D, glad to see you stayed passionate about the show
Well perhaps that man made it through unmolested whereas Johar and Tyrion are shit.
Aegon! You’ve returned!
I see Nic Cage, I click
Better watch out Connington
Connington is good as dead.
@@Ahmed-ii7up Oh of course. Only question is, how many will go down with him?
Timo Cruz He only needs to touch his enemies and they‘re dead...maybe he‘ll use that to his advantage.
@@larochejaquelein3680 agreed
The algorithm is strong. I watched this episode two hours ago. On DVD so maybe you think it's a coincidence but it was on my PS4
Thanks for continuing to do what you do. How do you think Daenerys' arc will conclude in the books? Do you think it'll end similarly to the books?
Where is the narration and drawings from? I’d watch that show.
The stone man in the thumbnail looks like Nicolas Cage lol
Did any else here hear about the theory where Gerion Lannister leads the stone men in the books
I did. Heard it from Preston jacobs
Kyan Chambers same 😂
Would make sense why he thinks he sees his father, im sure him and his uncle look similar
"the Stone men were proud as well, and the Shrouded Lord the Proudest of them all" -Septa Lemore
As proud as a Lion? We all know Gerion liked to mock "the Game"...
I did. Seems quite reasonable along with the theory, that he'd actually been in Valyria and got atacked by Euron Greyjoy on the way back.
Qyburn narrating this is perfect!
The narrator sounds like Qyburn.....
Obviously
Are these narrations from the audiobook? I would certainly like to listen to more of this narrator.
They're from the DVD/Blu-Ray special features, not sure about S7 and S8 but each prior season has them! There's tonnes of lore videos narrated by the cast, it's awesome.
Qyburn narrating? 🔥🔥🔥
Looks like THE place for rare loot.
I could see Dany burning down KL if there is an outbreak of greyscale.
Evidently, that is not how she handles pandemics.
She gonna burn it regardless, I don't think that's a show thing. Whatever the mad king was saying when he was going down "burn them all" it was a prophecy.
Or if she hears a bell
@@mickmickymick6927 Jon Con is the person who is/was traumatized by bells, and isn't it implied that he was in love with Rhaegar. I think they merged the ending of several characters and did away with as many of the magical subplots, and by doing so, the muddied the waters.
@@Invincible-Under-the-Sun I think Blood Raven drove the Mad King insane like what Bran did with Hodor.
Guys Valyria is not like that bs of the show. Lol
Turion: "Dyume"
Is that the actor that played Qyburn narrating?
The Stoned Men.
Who made the animation and who's the narrator? Voice sounds like the actor who played Qyburn in the series
It’s from the show. It’s one of the special features sections found in each season
Look up to GOT : History and Lore videos. They're on RUclips.
I wonder if the Stone Men can be turned into wights. Stone kinda being frozen Lava, you know.

In fall and throughout winter it’s so dry where I live so the back of my hands get dry and cracked like dried out mud just not dark. The skin on the back of my hands when they go a long time with no lotion get really stiff and painful to flex my hands or even do any movement in them. It’s my greyscale on just the back of the hands.
Get some moisturiser bro
Jon Connington is screwed. Lmao maybe he finds the cure in the books likewise to Jorah in the show.
Mr. Obunga
I foolishly hold optimism even though GRRM never gives any. Lol
Prepare to be disappointed. JONCON is gonna die rip
Jon Con is dead. The only question is, how many will go down with him. His cunning will allow him to cover it up while still being infectious... dangerous combination.
Timo Cruz
Agreed. His plan for aegon and with varys has now gotten dangerously high.
Tony H If he is cured of the disease, then it would have no true impact on the story at all...my guess is that Martin intends to create time pressure for JonCon and that will lead him to foolish decisions regarding the invasion. My other notion is that Jon Con might use it as a weapon. A secret touch on the current leader of the Golden Company, who is above all a coward?
The only thing worse than contracting greyscale is Season 8
What I tell people who haven't seen tv show yet
" don't worry, it didn't touch you"
Everytime I see Shireen & Stannis piss me off , that prick sacrificed his daughter for a fucking throne. He let a witch make him believe it's part of his destiny, I wasn't rooting for him but I did like Stannis yet when he sacrificed Shireen I hated him n crazy thing he never got within a mile of the throne after that. I was happy when some of us army ditched him for that if I was in his army no matter my rank I would have bounced to. Didn't he know something like that wouldn't have inspired, aspired any type of loyalty it would only hurt it
It's not the stannis it's D&D. In books she is still alive :)
Stone Men are in Volantis not Valyria. Thanks Dan and Dave🤦🏼♂️
Rhoyne?
NOT Volantis. Volantis is a city made by the Valyrians. It is called the “first daughter of Valyria.” The stone men actually live in the city named “Chroyane” which was nicknamed “The Sorrows,” after its destruction. Chroyane is a Rhoynar city. The Rhoynar lived on the river Rhoyne. After the Valyrians destroyed the Ghiscari, they began fighting the Rhoynar. Nymeria, a Rhoynar princess, had enough of the war and took as many of her people away from the war as she could, meanwhile many Rhoynar stayed to fight the Valyrians, calling Nymeria and those who followed her, cowards. I can assume that the Rhoynar who stayed to fight, died. Nymeria and her people bounced around south Essos and many islands and another continent on her ten thousand ships, until they found Dorne. Where they joined with the Martells to form the house of Nymeros-Martell which is usually shortened to house Martell. Anyway, the stone men were sent to The Sorrows or Chroyane. I hope this was informative.
After making my comment I opened up The World of Ice and Fire to check what I said was correct and there is A TON more info on just The Rhoynar if you’d like to hear more info let me know.
Now you're just grasping at straws.
Joe Bryant They do not live in Volantis rofl....last time tyrion was there, no stone men were seen. You probably mean the destroyed city of the Rhoynar
if the stone men are insane how do they manage to find food and survive in the wild?
Greyscale sounds like all the worse parts of leprosy, excema and harlequin ichtyosis combined together.
Anyone else think the narrator sounds like Anton Lesser Qyburn?
It is Qyburn
It is you dunce.
@@kelman727 you're certainly a little ray of sunshine aren't you?
You could say they have stones for brains
We have a highly contagious and deadly disease, so instead of mercy killing the infected and burning their bodies lets just drop them off in the ruins of Valyria...one of the few things I found very non-sensical about George's writing.
Maybe they viewed exiling them as a form of mercy. Also, maybe people did not want to get within close proximity of someone affected.
The idea that they get shipped off to Valyria is unique to the show I'm pretty sure.
In the books the Stonemen live on the river Rhoyne amongst ruined cities called the Sorrows while Valyria lies to the southeast surrounded by boiling seas.
It's actually inspired by history.
Would you kill a relative just because he's sick?
Exile and insolation makes a lot of sense.
folks have been exiling the diseased forever my dude.
