  • Trying "American" Food According to The Netherlands
What do you think of when you think of American food? In The Netherlands, the supermarket Lidl puts together a full "American" week every few months where they highlight food from the United States. We wanted to give these items a try to see if they really felt American or not. We're sharing our honest thoughts- the good, the bad, and the downright disgusting. What items will you try during the next American week at Lidl?

As an English man living here in the Netherlands I was so pleased to see British week a few years ago in lidl until I tried some of the stuff on offer 😀. So far from english it's funny fish and chips in a bag , full English breakfast on a pizza (wtf) tin of baked beans 3 times more expensive than lidl own beans . I've tried the so called thick milkshake from American week and my thought was exactly melted ice cream ... love your content keep it up ... find the time to visit kampen one day lovely city

English breakfast on pizza?! So strange. We’ve heard the one thing worth purchasing during the British week is the English Cheddar, but we haven’t taken the plunge.

I've had so much fun with this one, really enjoyed it!! I had the same response as Tammy and Eric, laughing out loud, even hitting the table... I had that kind of milkshakes when I was a kid and it was something new, the fun was really in shaking them, the taste was awfully sweet... I don't know about lidl, but at Albert Heijn the American pancakes are nice, for the rest I wouldn't buy anything in a supermarket that says 'American', it's mostly just a commercial thing, trying to sell cheap, easy to produce food, just words... The stuff sold has mostly nothing to do with America at all... And I'm still smiling remembering your faces with the milkshakes, so thank you!! Also for pointing me to an affordable maple syrup ;)

Hotdogs are frankfurters. They changed the name to hotdogs during WW1 because they were named after Frankfurt, which is of course a German city and Germany was the enemy back then. They forgot to change the name of hamburgers though, which are of course named after Hamburg, another German city. Maybe that’s why it got shortened to burgers.

Hilarious, loved it. So sorry for you, having to chomp through the Germanized Euro versions of your native foods. My dream holiday is a roadtrip through the USA, stopping at the traditional diners with proper burgers and milkshakes and all the typical American food you imagine there. Also, I have never found cheesecake over here that was as good as the New York style ones I had in New York. And I bet crabcakes will also be a disappointment on this side of the Atlantic 😄

We like the weeks that Lidl do some of the country things: Greek, Spanish, Italian and American. To be honest, from the greek week we only buy the olive oil (when they have the 2 liter can!) and the Greek beer Mythos. From Spain we like the tortilla de patata española. From Italy mostly the pasta stuff and from the American things... ehm, something woth chicken and offcourse the maple syrup!
And yes, they als do have German, Belgium, French weeks and a lot more, like Mexican and some more I even can't remember.
But always: read the package before buying. O, and Oreo... yummi!

Sometimes Aldi has a special week. Anyway in the past they had fi a Spanish week or a Greek week etcetera. I miss their French week when they had those special little pots with pateé which I love. Nowadays I can only get them at big Albert Hein for a much dearer price.

So bizarre compared to what we’re used to after living in the US for 30 plus years. The waffles and the syrup were probably the closed thing to Americana.

I never buy products of their special week stuff. The few times I tried it, it wasn't that great. And if I did like it, I had to wait a half year or so for it to be available again. So I skip that.

We tried the pancakes one of the first weeks we were here-so gross! We stick to making our own from scratch whenever we have the craving.
A great tip if you are making them from scratch: add whipped egg whites to the batter. It makes them so fluffy!

Lidl products vary between not so good and pretty good. McEnnedy is a license brand and I think multiple European factories are producing products for it. Like the peanutbutter is from Swartberg in Rotterdam. Don't know about the other products but none come close to American products. Then again, perhaps European people don't like the real American products. It tastes different like you probably think things over here taste less than across the pond. Have you ever done a food test with chocolate and compare it to American? American chocolate is probably the worst in the world. German and Belgian chocolate probably the best. And it doesn't even have to be expensive. You just know where to look for it.

    • @TAndTGoDutch
      @TAndTGoDutch  Год назад

We haven’t done a taste test comparing them, but the differences are astounding. American chocolate (like Hershey’s) tastes awful after being spoiled with various chocolates from Europe. No comparison!

Niet zo goed indeed. You really tortured yourself with “American” food. The only “American” product i use is American fritessaus (fries sauce). Like the yellow sauce you can get at McDonalds. Other “American” food i had was disgusting like i was eating cardboard. Next time eat something that doesn’t traumatize you. ❤❤❤

In the US they don't eat 'frietsaus' with their fries which you can purchase at the Dutch and Begian McDonald's. They'll eat it with ketchup. It is only being sold in The Netherlands and later on in Belgium. So it is nowhere near American.
