  • Fairytale Valkenburg (Christmas Markets in a Cave!)
This week, we're taking you with us to the city of Valkenburg, in the Limburg province of The Netherlands. Valkenburg hosts a Kerkstad (Christmas Town) and Christmas markets tucked away in a few caves found in the town. Lots of shopping, a gezellig atmosphere, delicious food, and a fairy-tale-like mood await! We enjoyed our time visiting, and think it's worth a visit to see it just once!
The Valkenburg Kerkstad and Cave Markets are open until the end of December!

Great video but way too short. The caves are indeed not that special. More important is the christmas feeling you get from the decorations, nice food, warm drinks and of course nice people like you. ❤️❤️❤️

Valkenburg is nice, I think the caves are more interesting to visit when it's not Christmas. Its history is interesting. There are also drawings and messages on the walls of American soldiers who were there when the caves also served as a kind of hospital during World War II. You can take a tour with a guide who can tell many great stories.

Never been during the Christmas season, but Valkenburg is beautiful. You should go back in summertime and try the rodelbaan. Also the Roman caves are very special

I’ve been there in March and visited the first cave (which is manmade like the other cave because they dug out mergel, which is sort of a sandstone). It’s more interesting when there is no Christmas market because a guide shows you around and talks about everything (and also makes sure you don’t get lost as it’s a deep cave complex going on for miles). The cave exits at the castle which is also fun to visit, it’s a ruin as it was destroyed during a battle in the Disaster Year 1672 (when England, France and Germany invaded the Netherlands).

Christmas or not, whenever we drive in to Valkenburg it immediately feels like we're no longer in the Netherlands anymore. The old buildings and the buildingstyles, the small streets and square with all the bars and restaurants, I love it.
A very beautifull and impressive place nearby is the American military cemetary and memorial at the town Margraten, there are more then 8000 soldiers burried.
Valkenburg and the area is also a really nice area to bike, if you're up for the hills like the famous Cauberg in Valkenburg, but I'ld suggest you skip that one, cause I'll bet you you can't make it and would step off the bike to walk.
Looking forward to your Maastricht video!

Fun fact. The trainstation of Valkenburg is the oldest one in The Netherlands. Also Valkenburg is also nice during the rest of the year. And the christmas market in the cave is great.

Presents are for Sinterklaas in our family, Christmas is for church on Christmas' eve and a nice dinner on BOTH Christmas days. I don't put up a tree, just a nativity set. Houses here are decorated far more muted than in the States. Most lights are just white. A big thing that sells really well is the Christmas villages. Check out ANY garden centre for more info on that.

Chrismas markets are a tradition from Germany. The Dutch version is less spectacular, however it is enjoyable. Valkenburg is touristic, nice for a summer holiday as well. Thank you for this impression

Hey Friends, Valkenburg is a bit touristy but maybe that's not a bad thing :-) At the end you go to a christmas event to see the people celebrate the holiday season. Do you know Antwerpen has its own decorated and lighted city center and christmas market? It is pretty decent! Antwerp always does something extra to attract people so I dare to say it is pretty magical. Coming week though it is going to be COLD! Weather forecast is -5 to 0 at mid day time. With some wind it feels like proper winter!!

  • @bertkassing8541

I, as an ordinary Dutchman, find Valkenburg a big tourist trap. Of course I've been there, but it's not something I'd go to again. On the other hand, the largest Christmas market in the Netherlands is close to your home. The large Christmas market is located in Haarlem. The largest in the country!!!!! Haarlem is easily accessible from Leiden, you know that. And you can visit your favorite Mexican restaurant too! Maastricht is a very nice city, by the way. There was always a very nice Christmas market on the square there (with an ice rink). My daughter once performed at the Christmas market. It was very cold then, but very nice.

    • @davidc.w.2908

You better go to Aken (Aachen) in Germany, very closeby. Not only are Vhristmas Markets more a German ‘thing’, Aachen was also the capital of the Roman-German Reich, which strechted from the North of Italy to Denmark and from the Baltic to the Netherlands. Empereur Charlemagne lived and died in the city and was buried in the Dom. And least but not least: Aachen is a pleasant town.

For the real Christmas feel, go to Austria; Tirol, preferentially to a small village like Kufstein for the holidays. That's where the magic really is: Snow capped mountains, the entire right atmosphere, ah well, just go there and find out for yourself ;-)

this has nothing to do with christmas specificly, but might i suggest a very good restaurant in the provice im from.
in twente close to the german border there is a restaurant with 5 star dutch pancakes and very good other food
its a medieval themed place with the whole christmas/ medieval inn vibe going, a little to the fantasy side in the garden where there is a terras.
this place is called ''de watermolen van bels'' and as the name suggests its a watermill besides the restaurant is a small river and a large forest where you can have the most beautifull walks!
its quite the experience so i tought i might share this information with you and its up to you if you do anything with it
i wish you all the best
    and happy holidays!

Christmas Markets in The Netherlands are very modest, let’s say Calvinistic 😏. I agree that the Germans are the real specialists in this matter. A lot of people from The Netherlands go around Christmas to Dortmund, Düsseldorf or Köln

But you really need to go back to Valkenburg in the summer and drink some white beers in the sun on the countless terraces and have a full tour of the caves (both cave entrances are connected to each other and you’ll get the same highlights from both) and in juli/august eat handcrafted ice cream with fresh picked cherries.

@@TAndTGoDutch by the way, there’s a small German mountain town named Monschau only 65 km from Valkenburg that is renowned for its Christmas shops and market. They start being “chrismassey” in september. But it’s best to get there by rental car from Maastricht or so because German public transport to smaller towns can be quite frustrating.
