We don’t want to spend money on a new one every year! 😂)

There are also a lot of Dutchies that do have 1 or both of these calendars but don't keep them in the bathroom. And also a lot if Dutchies who don't have any at all.
I only have a general calendar in our bathroom (for our guests), with every day fun facts and more. No birthdays on it. Although it's Dutch to have birthdays on it.... So you can write your own birthday on it too! I guess it's like : Hope they will remember me when I have my birthday ..:) THE calendar (privately) is in our kitchen... where we stay a lot of time as a family, with friends. It's like a kitchen/diner (small one ok but nice). Close to the garden. We do it all the times, staying together as a family and friends, and we love it! Being together, have fun and laugh. It's not a huge thing ok, but still. We love it.
Never forgot the first time I flushed an American toilet. Instant horror: it first adds water, so I thought it would overflow. In the Netherlands/Europe, the water really flushes it away.
a lot of things are smaller in the Netherlands we are a pretty small country so we have to use every little bit of space. In the USA ,there is so much more space (huge country) that you dont have to limit the size of houses and their facilities as much as we do. as for the stairs same thing, make them steep to fit the space
6:12 In older house the staircases are usually steep with narrow steps but more recently build houses (1990+) had to be built according to more strict building codes and that stipulated that stairs need to be less steep and steps wider in order for (especially elder) people to live on their own in their own homes longer and therefor the need for elderly homes would diminish (or at least that was the idea)…
Paper recycling in the Netherlands used to be like that 45 years ago. I remember going round the neighbourhood collecting paper to bring to the school, who then would collect a few cents per kilo from a paper recycling business.
About the loose cats.... most of the cats you see in Dutch streets aren't stray cats, like in most countries. Most of the cats you see have owners and are allowed to leave the house and return back home again. It is also a problem apparently because these cats kill a lot of city wildlife....
I'm a cat person - as well as a dog person :) - but I've had pedigree cats most all of my life, my most recent being a British Shorthair. Through a concern of only keeping him inside I've also learned that cats get vitamin D through their food, not from the sun like humans do. Also, indoor cats are known typically to live much longer. We have a lot of birds in the NL as well, and in my neighbourhood geese, swans and ducks who now have chicks following them around. I don't like seeing cats patrolling about for this reason too, as they're natural hunters which I don't fault them for. But their personnel should be more considerate. ;)

There is a single system for the toll roads in the USA called ElitePass, only the “specialty” tolls like the Mackinac Bridge are excluded. Because it’s more expensive it’s only used for trucks. In a truck you don’t need to have a separate transponder for E-ZPass, FasTrack, SunPass, and TxTag. There is a reason why old buildings are not torn down and replaced or just left alone to rot, like in most of the USA. Once a building gets the status of National Monument, which usually is at its 100 birthday, the building is protected. It has its pros and cons. I have seen homes where the owners could not replace parts of the home because it wouldn’t keep it authentic but they wanted it replaced because it contained asbestos. The good thing is, that the look of a street, town, view, and so on, is kept while maintaining the buildings useable to modern day standards. Keeping the buildings maintained authentic costs more money and time and the Dutch government does have subsidized some of that.
3:49 lol, even I (as a Dutchie) don't really understand why our sinks are so freaking small, even when there is enough space for it. My parents just renovated the toilet and have added a super tiny sink, which is really hard to use. Another friend has an even smaller one. You can't even open the tap without having water all over the place. 😅

We do have those brushes in America. I've always had them in my home and have seen them in other people's homes as well as some restaurants. Maybe not in big office buildings or more corporate environments where they have dedicated staff for cleaning.

Long trivia question: you are currently visitting and living in our country. In the 16th and 17th century we also had a lot of tourists, and in their letters to back home they often mentioned one strange behaviour they found in Holland, that they had not seen anywhere else in Europe. Tip, it was related to our position in the butter and cheese trade.

Yes, we enjoyed our time there, but yes, it feels like we barely scratched the surface. The Pantheon and Colosseum were breathtaking. Hopefully during our next visit, we’ll be able to see Vatican City! And yes, if all goes to plan, it’ll be a two-part video with Eric and Tammy.

I think it's great you guys are doing your part by recycling 😄! Just a little tip though: you are usually supposed the put the clothes and other textiles you want to recycle in plastic bags before you put them in the recycling container. It will keep the garments abd textiles clean. If you put them in without the bags they might get dirty, moldy or damaged and will have to be thrown out instead of re-used, re-purposed or recycled.

Man, the bathroom calendar made me laugh! You are right, it is Dutch to keep a calendar in the bathroom, but I haven't kept the calendar there for many years. It's in my study now.😉 As to differences between other countries, the biggest (for me) are the little things I guess. Especially the East of the Netherlands feels like one big village where everything is easy to find and get to. This is not the case in the US, for example, where I can't achieve much without a car. Naturally, culture wise there are a lot more differences, some of which have already mentioned by you! Go chips! I can see how it would be difficult to get one ov card in the USA. Every state really clings to their autonomy. However, even though the Dutch Rail system is mostly one company, the busses are many more companies so it does require coordination between the government and companies. Not sure how it is all regulated but they do all get on board (in stages sometimes) with the new systems. Now it's possible to use a bank card or phone to check in/out public transport (not for subscriptions etc yet). So you would think at least within a state it should be possible to get all the companies on board with the same system. But yeah, getting Americans to agree and work together in politics or business is not really an easy thing to do.
I can understand what you guys are saying, but your mikes produce a phased kind of sound with changing frequencies, which actually makes it hard to follow the conversations. Is the a noise canceling function? I notice that sounds are cut short regularly.
Oh dear that bruise looks horrible. I hope you got to recover from that. We don't struggle much with the stairs because we learned it as kids and kids bounce easier, lol. Adults don't bounce that well haha. You get used to it eventually. I personally prefer to go down a little sideways, so I have more room to place my feet.
That guy Eric they talk about doing the one chip challenge with just had a heart attack a real one not so long ago. I wouldnt do the one chip challenge if I were him especially not after seeing young men coughing like crazy and wanting to go under the shower after eating the one chip.

Drenthe province is really really different from Amsterdam or Leiden, or Tilburg. We've managed to almost make different countries out of our provinces, but because we're so close together, we're also a very united country. I think when your language skills are good enough to understand dutch, then it's time to listen to comedy conferences by for instance Herman Finkers and Jochem Meyer. They both do several of the Dutch accents, and those are hilarious. I bet those accents can also be found on youtube by just looking for "provinciale accenten nederland".
It was nice to see, that you started with weird things that you appreciate now but ended with things that you just appreciate. Are there any things that are still weird to you. I live 15 minutes walking from Germany and some things are just better organized there than in the Netherlands.
The OV-card is possible by a system that registers your each and every move - and I suppose what you pay, and what is owed to a particular company, is diverted behind the screens. It depends on just a smart computer system.

The long Dutch goodbyes. After visiting my then Dutch boyfriend, I'd do a short wave (first not without a hug and kiss, of course) and quickly depart through the airport customs. I later realised that this wasn't typical Dutch behaviour, which is to drag out one's farewell while waving repeatedly until the other is totally out of sight. It doesn't have to be at the airport either. It could be anywhere, at one's home, etc. 😊 Oh, and I still can't get used to the lack of napkins everywhere - ha. And dessert before lunch or dinner at birthday celebrations. I don't know about hagelslag, though. I always thought it was a kid thing. We eat a continental breakfast, or just coffee. I go there 2 october (because it starts then), stay in a hotel, and go back 4 october. My daughter was born 3 october (why??? 🤣🤣🤣), I took her with me every year since her first birthday, and now she has it in her blood too... she celebrates her birthday in Leiden with me, her brothers and a bunch of friends, all in the same hotel 😂 partyyy! 🥳

You don’t need an OV chip anymore..last week i went from Schiphol airport to Haarlem and was able to check in and out with my phone (if you added a digital bank card eg apple pay etc)..i don’t know if it has already rolled out through the whole Netherlands but you can test it

If you're doing the chip challenge, don't use water, makes it worse and don't use milk either. the best thing is a yoghurtdrink like Yoki Drinkyoghurt. Capsaicin will desolve in yoghurtdrink kinda stuff ;-)
Oil would probably be your best option, since capsaicin desolves in fat. Not very tasty though. If you're using yoghurt (drink) make sure you're not having the one with 0% fat 😉

It’s not Dutch, it’s from the elite. Go eat in a luxurious restaurant in other countries and they know when your finished the way you out your utensils. Also, when you don’t want the waiter to keep filling your glass(es), don’t empty it.
Rarely these "Dutch" vids mention "beschuitje hagelslag " .. ( maybe thats because most "non" dutch will have destroyed the "beschuit" before it reaches their mouth, and for sure it will explode in a pile of dust at the first bite.. ) come to think of it "eating a "beschuitje hagelslag" should be part of the "inburgering" exam 🤗 just like cycling while steering another bicycle.
There is a lot of history to this. The main reason is because North Brabant used to be part of the Duchy of Brabant which was situated in an area that is now part of both the Netherlands and Belgium. When Belgium became an independent country, Brabant was split up between Belgium (which got the Southern part of Brabant) and the Netherlands (which got the Northern part of Brabant). Hence the Dutch province of North Brabant. South Brabant (the Belgian part) is actually now partitioned into multiple regions. The region in Belgium around Brussels is still called Brabant.

I think if you compare the USA wit the Netherlands its wrong. better to compare it with European union and see the states as countries like we have in the European union. But correct me if i am wrong.
You’re entitled to your opinion. But we’re Americans, living in The Netherlands. This channel is about our personal experience, and what we know. We haven’t lived anywhere else, and don’t have enough information to compare to the EU as a whole (or individual countries) because of that.

Both of us have lived in and visited multiple states, and yes, there are minor differences, but many more similarities in our opinion. I think the catculture(?) is just something in Amsterdam. I lived my whole life in The Netherlands, i almost never see any cats wondering around. cats must be chipped in the Netherlands. The chip requirement applies to all cats, including cats that are kept indoors. I found it very striking in Greece and Croatia that street cats were everywhere.
It's incredibly common for housecats to be wandering the streets in the Netherlands while their staff is at work/school or even during the night, even in a student city like Groningen. The past couple of years certain organizations have even been campaigning against it (due to the cats killing a lot of birds), usually around the start of spring. I'm currently living in a small town and it's no unusual to see a handful of cats wandering through my yard or around the house on a daily basis, often see about a dozen per week. And when I walk or cycle through the neighborhood or even traveling by public transport (off the highways) you'll see cats wandering around here and there. Might overlook 'em if you only drive a car though.
@@femsff7090 its common to see a cat. But not like southern countries. In greece or Kroatia you will see between the 10 and 20 cats in one street. If you see many cats in a Dutch city, its just a filfthy street. I lived in several cities and villages. I cant remember i saw more than 2 cats on a street.

Guys, the sound at your video's sucks... no really... in a way that you guys are often very hard to understand....I am not saying this to bash you guys, I just want to be able to understand you ;-) The fact that we are able to travel on just one OV card comes down to the integration of all existing card systems. If we can do this in the entire country, then at least the state of Texas should be able to do the same. It all comes down to mentality; how user friendly do they want to make the OV system to begin with..? And so every other state should be able to do what we did in The Netherlands, OV chip-card wise spoken. And if you really think big....this should be able to be organized nation wide I'd say.... I foresee that this will happen in the EU some day...

I hate loose cats. People should keep them inside. They kill far too many birds because there are so many loose cats. Especially the endangered birds are victims to these imported predators. Two weeks ago a big white longhaired cat killed a breeding moorhen in my garden, leaving a nest with five eggs orphaned and ready for birds of prey to snatch them. Which they did. The moorhen was butchered and left behind uneaten. I hate this. Cats should be kept inside during breeding season. Just give every cat a chip and a gps collar. And introduce a tax for cats also.

6:12 In older house the staircases are usually steep with narrow steps but more recently build houses (1990+) had to be built according to more strict building codes and that stipulated that stairs need to be less steep and steps wider in order for (especially elder) people to live on their own in their own homes longer and therefor the need for elderly homes would diminish (or at least that was the idea)…
Houses used to be taxed by how wide they were, that is why in the past people built tall and narrow houses. Steep stairs came with the territory.
Paper recycling in the Netherlands used to be like that 45 years ago. I remember going round the neighbourhood collecting paper to bring to the school, who then would collect a few cents per kilo from a paper recycling business.
About the loose cats.... most of the cats you see in Dutch streets aren't stray cats, like in most countries. Most of the cats you see have owners and are allowed to leave the house and return back home again. It is also a problem apparently because these cats kill a lot of city wildlife....
I agree, my son has 2 cats and they stay inside for that reason...
I'm a cat person - as well as a dog person :) - but I've had pedigree cats most all of my life, my most recent being a British Shorthair. Through a concern of only keeping him inside I've also learned that cats get vitamin D through their food, not from the sun like humans do. Also, indoor cats are known typically to live much longer. We have a lot of birds in the NL as well, and in my neighbourhood geese, swans and ducks who now have chicks following them around. I don't like seeing cats patrolling about for this reason too, as they're natural hunters which I don't fault them for. But their personnel should be more considerate. ;)

There is a single system for the toll roads in the USA called ElitePass, only the “specialty” tolls like the Mackinac Bridge are excluded. Because it’s more expensive it’s only used for trucks. In a truck you don’t need to have a separate transponder for E-ZPass, FasTrack, SunPass, and TxTag.
There is a reason why old buildings are not torn down and replaced or just left alone to rot, like in most of the USA. Once a building gets the status of National Monument, which usually is at its 100 birthday, the building is protected. It has its pros and cons. I have seen homes where the owners could not replace parts of the home because it wouldn’t keep it authentic but they wanted it replaced because it contained asbestos. The good thing is, that the look of a street, town, view, and so on, is kept while maintaining the buildings useable to modern day standards. Keeping the buildings maintained authentic costs more money and time and the Dutch government does have subsidized some of that.
3:49 lol, even I (as a Dutchie) don't really understand why our sinks are so freaking small, even when there is enough space for it. My parents just renovated the toilet and have added a super tiny sink, which is really hard to use. Another friend has an even smaller one. You can't even open the tap without having water all over the place. 😅

We do have those brushes in America. I've always had them in my home and have seen them in other people's homes as well as some restaurants. Maybe not in big office buildings or more corporate environments where they have dedicated staff for cleaning.

Long trivia question: you are currently visitting and living in our country. In the 16th and 17th century we also had a lot of tourists, and in their letters to back home they often mentioned one strange behaviour they found in Holland, that they had not seen anywhere else in Europe. Tip, it was related to our position in the butter and cheese trade.

So when the were asked to come, to the town to clean, they made sure, the houses were spick and span. So much that visiting tourists would mention it, in their letters send home. So the correct Answer is hygien.

Just a little tip though: you are usually supposed the put the clothes and other textiles you want to recycle in plastic bags before you put them in the recycling container. It will keep the garments abd textiles clean. If you put them in without the bags they might get dirty, moldy or damaged and will have to be thrown out instead of re-used, re-purposed or recycled.

Man, the bathroom calendar made me laugh! You are right, it is Dutch to keep a calendar in the bathroom, but I haven't kept the calendar there for many years. It's in my study now.😉
As to differences between other countries, the biggest (for me) are the little things I guess. Especially the East of the Netherlands feels like one big village where everything is easy to find and get to. This is not the case in the US, for example, where I can't achieve much without a car. Naturally, culture wise there are a lot more differences, some of which have already mentioned by you!

Normally, if you recycle clothes, you have to put them in a plastic bag.
I can see how it would be difficult to get one ov card in the USA. Every state really clings to their autonomy. However, even though the Dutch Rail system is mostly one company, the busses are many more companies so it does require coordination between the government and companies. Not sure how it is all regulated but they do all get on board (in stages sometimes) with the new systems. Now it's possible to use a bank card or phone to check in/out public transport (not for subscriptions etc yet).
So you would think at least within a state it should be possible to get all the companies on board with the same system. But yeah, getting Americans to agree and work together in politics or business is not really an easy thing to do.
I can understand what you guys are saying, but your mikes produce a phased kind of sound with changing frequencies, which actually makes it hard to follow the conversations.

- As for moving...I've only moved within the Netherlands, but I've moved all around my own country. Lived in Amsterdam, Delfzijl, Zeist, ...and many other places. I've moved house 18 times now. It is amazing how different every place was, within the same country! Drenthe province is really really different from Amsterdam or Leiden, or Tilburg. We've managed to almost make different countries out of our provinces, but because we're so close together, we're also a very united country.
I think when your language skills are good enough to understand dutch, then it's time to listen to comedy conferences by for instance Herman Finkers and Jochem Meyer. They both do several of the Dutch accents, and those are hilarious. I bet those accents can also be found on youtube by just looking for "provinciale accenten nederland".

The OV-card is possible by a system that registers your each and every move - and I suppose what you pay, and what is owed to a particular company, is diverted behind the screens. It depends on just a smart computer system.
Slowly it will be substituted with paying contactless I think, like they have in London and other places. Also very handy!

The long Dutch goodbyes. After visiting my then Dutch boyfriend, I'd do a short wave (first not without a hug and kiss, of course) and quickly depart through the airport customs. I later realised that this wasn't typical Dutch behaviour, which is to drag out one's farewell while waving repeatedly until the other is totally out of sight. It doesn't have to be at the airport either. It could be anywhere, at one's home, etc. 😊
Oh, and I still can't get used to the lack of napkins everywhere - ha. And dessert before lunch or dinner at birthday celebrations. I don't know about hagelslag, though. I always thought it was a kid thing. We eat a continental breakfast, or just coffee.

You don’t need an OV chip anymore..last week i went from Schiphol airport to Haarlem and was able to check in and out with my phone (if you added a digital bank card eg apple pay etc)..i don’t know if it has already rolled out through the whole Netherlands but you can test it

It’s not Dutch, it’s from the elite. Go eat in a luxurious restaurant in other countries and they know when your finished the way you out your utensils. Also, when you don’t want the waiter to keep filling your glass(es), don’t empty it.

Why is Noord-brabant in the south of the Netherlands?

There is a lot of history to this. The main reason is because North Brabant used to be part of the Duchy of Brabant which was situated in an area that is now part of both the Netherlands and Belgium. When Belgium became an independent country, Brabant was split up between Belgium (which got the Southern part of Brabant) and the Netherlands (which got the Northern part of Brabant). Hence the Dutch province of North Brabant. South Brabant (the Belgian part) is actually now partitioned into multiple regions. The region in Belgium around Brussels is still called Brabant.

I lived my whole life in The Netherlands, i almost never see any cats wondering around.
cats must be chipped in the Netherlands. The chip requirement applies to all cats, including cats that are kept indoors. I found it very striking in Greece and Croatia that street cats were everywhere.

It's incredibly common for housecats to be wandering the streets in the Netherlands while their staff is at work/school or even during the night, even in a student city like Groningen. The past couple of years certain organizations have even been campaigning against it (due to the cats killing a lot of birds), usually around the start of spring.
I'm currently living in a small town and it's no unusual to see a handful of cats wandering through my yard or around the house on a daily basis, often see about a dozen per week. And when I walk or cycle through the neighborhood or even traveling by public transport (off the highways) you'll see cats wandering around here and there. Might overlook 'em if you only drive a car though.

Guys, the sound at your video's sucks... no really... in a way that you guys are often very hard to understand....I am not saying this to bash you guys, I just want to be able to understand you ;-)
The fact that we are able to travel on just one OV card comes down to the integration of all existing card systems. If we can do this in the entire country, then at least the state of Texas should be able to do the same. It all comes down to mentality; how user friendly do they want to make the OV system to begin with..? And so every other state should be able to do what we did in The Netherlands, OV chip-card wise spoken. And if you really think big....this should be able to be organized nation wide I'd say.... I foresee that this will happen in the EU some day...
Nou, ik heb het geprobeerd hoor; een paar filmpjes van jullie kanaal bekeken. Maar het punt is: ik vind het gewoon niet zo een interessant concept wat jullie doen op jullie kanaal. Het is allemaal een beetje van hetzelfde: een paar Amerikaanse immigranten die het dan gaan hebben over bitterballen en kalenders op de WC.
De content die jullie maken is 1 in een dozijn. Maar waarschijnlijk is jullie publiek andere Amerikanen. Wil je echt goede en interessante inhoud dan zou ik gewoon eens gaan kijken naar Not Just Bikes en Bicycle Dutch. Leer Nederland nu eens echt kennen, gooi het over een hele andere boeg.

I hate loose cats. People should keep them inside. They kill far too many birds because there are so many loose cats. Especially the endangered birds are victims to these imported predators. Two weeks ago a big white longhaired cat killed a breeding moorhen in my garden, leaving a nest with five eggs orphaned and ready for birds of prey to snatch them. Which they did. The moorhen was butchered and left behind uneaten. I hate this. Cats should be kept inside during breeding season. Just give every cat a chip and a gps collar. And introduce a tax for cats also.
I was surprised that in the US they don't have a brush in the toilet.
