How to Build a Flag Pole for your Yard for $130

  • We have needed a proper flag pole in front of this house and it has been far too long around our place without one. This is a two hour project is simple, and results in an inexpensive yet very strong flag pole that cost less than $130. This is a quick project with galvanized pipe parts that are readily available at your home center and will change the look of your home forever.
This is the third flag pole using this build method that I have made, all are still straight and strong! One even took 80MPH of wind AND a tornado and it didn't even care! Proven flag pole install method that will last forever.
    You will need:
2x 2" Galvanized pipe, 10' Lengths (Will cut this in half to bury in concrete.)
    1x 1 1/2" Galvanized pipe 10' length
    2-3 Bags of concrete
    1x Cleat
1x 3" Eye bolt with nuts
    1x 50' 1/4" Rope
    2x D-Rings or clips
    1x 1/4" Pully
    2x 3/4" Self Tap screws

I'm just curious. Are there any federal or state customs, rules, regulations or even laws in the US how you make a flag pole and how you attach the flag to the rope? Here (all Scandinavia), there are no strict laws but rather customs that the pole _should be_ white (unless it's a small one made of wood) and the flag _should always_ be attached to the rope with flag sticks top and bottom. Personally I would never have used what you call D-rings: metal + metal + wind = clunk clunk.

    • @kcgunesq
      @kcgunesq 2 года назад +4

@@SteifWood The US has a fairly detailed flag code. 4 U.S.C. ch. 5 § 5 is the law. However:
      1. It is for the most part, advisory. Federal offices are likely bound to follow it, but ordinary citizens and business cannot be punished or arrested for disregarding. That said, generally if you care enough to fly one, you generally care enough to follow the rules.
      2. While there are portions dealing with display, such as the requirement that the flag not be flown at night, unless illuminated, I don't believe it there are any rules about pole color or attachment methods. Indeed, I believe even US government flow flags vary in attachment. Some are sleeved for indoor poles and many are attached with hooks through grommets.
Do you have a photo or link to the flag sticks? Are these just pegs that hold the rope to the flag?
Yes, flag hardware does often clank in high winds, but to me, its just part of the music of life.

You could spray the exposed pipe threads with cold galvanizing spray paint. It would keep them from rusting as the galvanization is lost when the threads are cut.

Get a flagpole truck with finial, that allows the flag to rotate at top of pole and tie your halyard together between your snap hooks keeping a neater look and easier hitching at the cleat, especially when flying flag at half staff.

Just the video I was looking for to build a good solid flagpole that will withstand the strong beach coastal winds of North Myrtle Beach, SC. I had been thinking 2"inch galvanized. Thanks for a great video, extremely well planned, organized, and explained. Thanks from an old Army paratrooper, Vietnam Vet. I'm headed to Lowes to get my material. USA. The only addition will be a POW*MIA flag in remembrance of our over 1500 MIAs from the Vietnam War. Thanks for an excellent video, and most importantly, being an American Patriot and probably a vet.

Another quick tip would be to use a PVC or simlar sleeve that is wider in diameter than the base of your pole. Install the PVC in the concrete footing, then install your flagpole inside the PVC and fill the PVC with sand to secure the pole in place. This gives you a little leeway to make small adjustments to the plumb line. It also allows you to take the pole down for maintenance or replacement in the future. This looks great for the price and will work fine for most residential applications. If you want an economic residential pole with the professional "commercial" pole look, we care a Special Sectional Series flagpole for around $500 that is packaged to ship with UPS/Fedex instead of a freight truck.

UPDATE (June 2024): We installed ours October 2023, with a little modifications to it. We did a 10 ft pole as the initial (5 feet in the ground and 5 feet above) as we wanted our finished height to be 25 ft. I will say that we have experienced an EF3 tornado in Dec'23 and multiple straight line winds of 60+mph and this setup hasn't been compromised at all!!! Highly recommend this DIY project if you have been wanting to show you patriotism! I will say that having the 5 ft above ground did present a high level of difficulty when you go to install the two remaining piles (10 ft each).
Hey Tyler! I watched the video you did at your old house and now this one, great job! Where do you buy your galvanized pipes?

"hold your breath" lol, I do the same thing when dealing with 1 or so bags where I won't be in it a long time.

use a bolt/nuts extended through the pole (about inch or two) from bottom of the cap/threads not the cap to sturdy the pulley then you could later add a finial by tapping the cap

Seriously considering doing this as a steel flagpole at the local flag store is $700. Thanks for sharing. I however would want to buy a stationary truck (I think that's what they are called, It's the pully at the top) with a ball topper on it. That way I can get one of those solar lights that you can put at the top.
