  • Years ago on This Old House we featured the installation of a wooden flagpole on our Napa, California project. Now Norm has taken up the challenge on making one in The NewYankee Workshop. Made of strong Douglas fir, glued with epoxy, painted with marine paint and mounted on a welded steel ground anchor designed by master welder Bob Diorio, this flagpole is easy to maintain because the whole pole can be lowered to the ground whenever necessary. Be the first in your neighborhood to make your own flagpole.

    Norm is one of only a handful of people outside of my family and close friends that I genuinely get sad about thinking they won't be around forever. What an amazing asset he has been to this world.

    Hey Norm, I went to a Boarding Military Academy from January 31, 1971 to Early June 1973. One of the Cadets' dutys was to be excused from all classes and other dutys for one day each school year to perform the Dutys of Officer of the Day, Sergeant of the Guard or Orderly. Those Cadets sounded all the bugle calls and raised and lowered the US Flag at the proper time each day. I was taught to tie 4 Half Hitches to secure the Flag, after winding the rope on the cleat. Seeing this video brings back memories. Thank You.

    I grew up watching Norm from the first time Bob Vila introduced him on This Old House. I then watched probably every episode of The New Yankee Workshop. This man is probably responsible for selling a ton of wood working tools for a lot of businesses. May God bless him and his family always. 🙏🏽🔨🪚

    I don’t have the tools or the talent to built a flag pole like the one Norm is building but even so he does inspire me to put up my American flag tomorrow and leave it up and display it proudly. And I urge all proud Americans to do the same. Especially in the state our country is presently in. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

      There's still people doing stuff like this. For example, Matthias Wandel, here on RUclips. He's even built a bunch of his own power tools. And he definitely doesn't use dominos. He doesn't even like pocket holes. You've also got people like Frank Howarth, also on RUclips. He's definitely way better equipped (actually even better than Norm was), but still really good. And amazing at making videos.

    Before we use any power tools, let’s talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.

    Norm, on wooden sailing boats, the main mast shape
    is exactly how you discribed. Square where it hits the
    keelson, octagonal where it clears the deck, and round
    up to the truck. It is not a large truck, since it is at the
    top of a mast. (Or, what Army people call a flagpole)

    You can make out of wood a smaller flagpole to attach to the pillar of your house because that’s a lot of wood not knowing how expensive fir is.

    • @Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co
      @Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co Месяц назад +1

      There have been at least two taller wooden flagpoles. The tallest ever wooden flagpole in the world at 225 feet was found at Kew Gardens in London, UK, and was fashioned from a Douglas fir harvested in British Columbia; it was taken down due to rot in 2007. Its closest competitor, at Stampede Park in Calgary, Canada, was 202 feet tall, and was also fashioned from a BC Douglas fir; it was taken down in 2001, also due to rot.

      Wood was way cheaper than steel before the Industrial Revolution. I’d say most flag poles were wood or wood pikes.
