How To Convert To Disc Brakes From V-Brakes On Mountain Bike
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- I show how to upgrade an old mountain bike from V-brakes to disc brakes. I replace the wheels, install rotors, calipers, new cables/housings, and adjust everything. The disc brakes I used are Avid BB5's. I used 160mm rotors. They are mechanical disc brakes, so are cable actuated. The Avid CPS mounting brackets I used were 0mm IS for the front, and a 20mm IS for the rear.

i would like to send a pic
sounds like you are saying sluts instead of slots
Why cut the cables when it could be reused, duh.
Not only do you do interesting conversions and mods, you don't waste time by over-explaining things. You talk fast while you work fast! Very considerate of the viewer's time!
Thanks, RJ!
Every time he said “here”, I really felt that
I hear ya!

You forgot the "AAAYYYND"
I am so glad I saw this video, the bike shop where I bought my Giant bike 15 years ago said I couldn't upgrade and that if I wanted disk breaks, I needed to purchase a new bike.
After looking at my mounts on my Giant Left side fork and rear assembly, I was certain they are for disk breaks. Sure enough, that is exactly what they are for.
Now I am determined to make the change thanks to your video!
Great video. Very methodical. I have a MTB with disc brakes that I though were defective regarding their braking power. When I saw your video on the part that you adjusted the brake pads calibrating the discs' gaps with the pads and tightening the caliper bolts Bam! It hit me. I just loosened the bolts, adjusted the gaps, held the brake levers, tightened the bolts and wow! My bike braking power just became an absolute fix! Thanks.
Your a moron. Common sense sll bicycle brakes are adjustable
@@mmarczuk1976 yikes kinda hard reply..from someone replying to a year old comment.
P.S: "you're a moron" not " your a moron"
@@mmarczuk1976 who's the moron now
@@TheCubanN3rd I mean he's right though. Why would somebody buy / use a bike without even knowing common things about it?
@@wiliestrogue2924 To be fair, on first look, the braking mechanism will reveal itself as to how it works just by looking at it. It's more insulting to imply that someone would need knowledge to know that it can adjust
*Some missed parts.. red reflector. No kick leg, the one in picture I got it separately. **Latest.Bike** Was easy to assembly. Instructions are clear. Very good idea to take it to a bike shop for tune up. If you have tools, knowledge and time easy to make it ready for a ride.*
This video was a real eye opener for me. I'm now looking at every used MTB in a whole new light. Checking for those mounting points. Thanks.
🙂 first thing I did - go to garage and look at my older mtn bike 🙁.
I got 2mountain bikes Gary fisher same models but 3years apart so I can change wheels with the newer one it also is disc ready but figures I like the older one better but the older one had a optional disc model so it can be upgraded but will need brackets in back and front
Thanks for the video RJ. Did something like this many years ago and I had to use one of them adapters for rhe rear - worked a treat.
Quick tip - cut back zip ties using a pair of nail clippers - they end up looking neater and no sharp edges or plastic sticking out to wreck your fingers on.
My advice is to use flush cutters with zip ties. They work a lot better
I always wondered why my bike has those mounts ... maybe the next upgrade ?
same for me, but having the mounts is the bare minimum I thought. Sometimes there is so much stuff to replace that the effort becomes too expensive for my bike.
Honestly, your videos are the best instructive DIY videos on the internet. You’re very patient and detailed and you provide great instruction plus “how to” inspiration....Thanks!
Thank you for this. I just bought a 2014 REI Novara Portal that currently has V-brakes. It has the tabs for disc brakes. Additionally, the wheels it came with have the 6 hole pattern for disc rotors. So I was searching for a RUclips video for a conversion to disc brakes. This is very helpful.
I like how he did this in his pajamas. That's exactly how I'll end up doing it.
Hadn’t noticed. Now I need to rewatch.
Wow. How to add disc brake calipers to a frame built for disc brake calipers. I really needed a video for that.
I just use bottom of my shoe as a brake.
Most people in my country do that too i do that it awesome until i tried no shoes 😑
That is called a "plate brake"
People in Africa use their bare feet
How many rupies in India
Tricycles in my area are common, they use used tires as mud pads and brakes
I've worked with BB5 and they either work or they don't. Quality issues. And if they don't work, well your constantly adjusting them. But they work better than Tektro. The way I learned was using a business card between the rotor and rear caliper. Then doing what RJ did. RJ...you finally did a disc brake video. Thank you kind Sir!
Outstanding video from the continuity and presentation to the perfect camera work. This has to be the most concise and fully explained video on this subject extant. Major Kudos to you Buddy! This could not have been done better.
i just saw i video right before watching yours of a guy in asia using those exact same adapters you had for this same conversion but he actually installed 2 new hubs for 6 bolt disc brakes, apparently those adapters do work fine.
Ill stiick to my trek 4300 v brakes until I upgrade to a cannondale trail 8 later this year...Upgrading to disc costs as much as a bike lol
you are absolutely right. .new wheels, normally new gears, disc brakes, and sometimes even the frame doesn't have the adapters he is showing.. so it's almost new for everything!
Planning to convert my 26er rigid mtb into 700cc so this video is really helpful for me, thank you!!
Great video! Your bike looks a lot cooler with the disc brakes on there. I like your explanations with all the part descriptions, torque measurements, and proper units as well as tricks to get the cables and bolts fitted properly. You rock!
Thanks for this video I was wondering if i needed new rice for a disc conversion kit.
In glass I found this video before taking the plunge lol
thanks for the vid I have been thinking about doing this to my wifes bike but wasn't sure if I could tackle it great vid!!
Thank you so much !!!
Almost 2 hrs but was worth it 😅😅😅😅
good video. you saved me a lot of trouble,
I was considering trying to add discs to old wheels. No way, no room for extra hardware, thanks.
I was going to get disc brakes for my bike not knowing you needed a adapter to mount the disc brake you're a lifesaver bro
This is one of the most informative and useful bike modification videos ever.
Thank you for that, now I have confidence to do it myself! :)
Wow.. One of the best instructional video I have watched in you tube. The camera focus is spot on, sharp and instructions are concise. Awesome. I'm impressed
Thanks! This is a real nice DIY video. I used it to convert my bianchi doss 4600 from v to disc brakes, it was really helpfull!
Nice, I still have Avid single digit V-brakes on my 2002 built I-Drive Marathon and love them. More videos like this are persuading me to "upgrade"...one day.
Hey thanks great vid!! I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion and advice when it comes to adapters for non-disc break ready frames! Got a 93 kona cinder cone and heard a2z adapter works with some light modification😀
That's why I'm researching the same thing.
I like how, as he's doing this, he's using tools SPECIFICALLY FOR working on bikes and didn't just go and grab a Kobalt Torx driver from his toolbox like I'm sure most anyone else would've
You Sir are joy to watch, you do great things with bikes.....
this was an excellent video. i just changed a 2004 Trek/Gary Fisher bike to Avid BB7 calipers, 160 shimano rotors and 26" Alex Ace 17 wheels. everything went exactly as shown. total cost was about $400 canadian. the braking is not as good as hydraulic brakes, the cost of which would have been just too much, but they're better than the rim brakes. because i ride a lot of single track with steep hills and lots of turns if felt it was worth the expense. i wouldn't do this for road riding.
Looking forward to see those brake frame adapters videos!
I did this on my bike after watching you i think your videos are better than any course i could take thank you.
The scotty kilmer of bikes -good stuff
Great vid! I really like the way you use the old v-brake levers for "new" disc brakes.
Love the attention to detail, and in depth directions. Great video.
very well detailed video, it is absolutely doable by someone who never did something like this! Thanks mate!
Thank you for your video clip that help me a lot to replacing my Vbreak to the new caliper.
seriously, this channel needs more viewers, basically 8.5/10 times it is cheaper and less time consuming to just buy a new bike, BUT! what fun is that? I love the ridiculousness of all your conversions, and how you generally answer every question someone could have regarding: can I put this thing on this old thing?
Another excellent video. I've learned so much watching you. Many thanks.
got a trek 4300 for 20 $. looking to turn it into and e-bike. thanks to your video, this will be my first step.
all you need is an e-bike conversion set. from 500$/€ upto 1000 depending the battery capacity and motor. however it all adds 5kg to your cycle what. you will feel when you run out of battery.
I recommend it if you cycle opposite wind or live in hilly area
I had a Diamondback Response years ago. It was a good bike.
theyre TANKS! i love mine

What happen with your bike?

You could use the old brake mounts to put to two cafe locks on bike if you are going to just use bike for around town an short rides on local bike paths.
and also i like your videos because all of my bike are vintage bikes
Thanks RJ! I was waiting for this for a while. Great job as usual!
👍🏽👍🏽 always wanted to know disc brakes worked on MTB. Thank you for the install vid.
bike looked more expensive when he put disc breaks on it
Giio because it is :) lol ;)
It is now...
@Ultranationalist right! Lol
It always looks more expensive then
Brakes.
Great video. Thank You! Now I know I need a new wheel:) I want to put my front disk brake set on the rear which doesn't have disk, and upgrade the front caliper and disk.
can you please make a video of an air fork to coil fork conversion? There is not one video on YT showing the process.
Replace the whole fork.
ruclips.net/video/rUX_cTuk3O8/видео.html
RJ The Bike Guy can you show a video in which u give the dimensions of welding the Is mounts on the frame n fork?
I have a bike made by Trek that looks exactly like that, except it's Trek not Diamondback. I bought it new around 2000 or 2001 and it still runs quite well. The V brakes could use some adjustment, but the main thing they need are new Shimano brake pads. Still, I can take it off road in the woods. If I were a serious biker, I'd probably buy a modern bike. But I found it interesting that your bike was literally exactly like my bike, yet they were different brands.
Love ❤️ this video RJ bike 🚲 guy easy job installed disc break
Dont we have change the gear for changing to disc
your video had helped me so much as I'm by far not a great builder but you've helped me to become better at it bud
I used a disc brake center lock ring to use my old rims
Im recommend using little bit bronze grease back side on the brake pads. Just a film coat not too much . Its reducing friction from pad pusher axle in brake caliper. Because, this axle turns when you push the brake . Also use high quality brake line and add some grease on it. Works almost perfect like hydraulic brake if you did this.
is there a way to go from v breaks to hydraulic without having the mounting points on your frame?
Buy the adapters
Get a better bike, your frame will be limiting you more than the breaks
"Whomadoo". l always love hearing people say that! LOL
great job RJ thorough as always even if you do it in your socks 😉
keep up the great work, still looking forward to some restorations on the bikes you got last month
I want to do this to build a street legal motorized bike, like a lightweight touring motorcycle, and I'd probably use the v brake posts and a clamp below the seat to attach a rear rack for holding a fuel can, battery, tail-light, brake-light, turning signals and licence plate. I'd probably go with the biggest disk brakes I can get in that case, since the goal is to sustain a speed of at least 40mph which is a common highway minimum
you should just call it rim brakes to dicsc, so people with cantis can find it too :) Just a suggestiion :)
@Joby Fluorine Me.
@Joby Fluorine me
I put a 80 cc motor on my bike
@Joby Fluorine I like the bike I've got now goes about 35mph. How fast does your bicycle go... when ever you can afford to put a motor on it then and only then can you came back and try again.
And the thing about my mom... not cool bro she's dead.
Thanx for the tip on sequence for " torque arm, bike frame, washer, nut" , at the very end! My axle on the Gmac bike motor is about 8" long. Much too long for my frame, but I am afraid to cut off excess until I know EXACTLY how much I need to attach hardware nuts etc.
why does he mix imperial and metric measurements?
Somethings are explicitly in metric, some things aren't. I live in the USA and we predominantly use the imperial system.
And in the United States we tend to get a mixed bag of metric and imperial on anything we work on, so mechanics of all stripes have to have both sets of tools usually.
IronheadOfScroteus I wish we were just taught metric. Being one of the only countries that uses the system is utterly stupid. Factory have to use both mechanics have to use both. Should have just used metric in the first place
@@rmaul2469 I agree. Sometimes as Americans, our urge to stand out reaches ridiculous levels.
You Imperial slime!
Thanks for this, RJ. Thinking of putting a front disc brake on my 1990 Trek 930. I guess I need to look for new wheels!
Very informative and helpful video, thanks...keep doing what your doing.
Holy Frek, u make understanding this so easy . Thx U for making this look less intimidating 👏🏽
Excellent video very helpfull, soon I’ll be doing my own upgrade, and I have to say, this video was the best.
I did a rim brake to disc brake conversion a few years ago on my titanium 700c cyclocross dropbar that came with a rim brake setup (remember cyclocross, the father of gravel?) with Ultegra components, and a carbon fork. Disc caliper mounts were already on the bike, so it was begging to be upgraded to disc. I found a Felt cyclocross disc ready wheelset on Ebay.
Conclusion: Sure, it won't be cheap to switch from rim to disc brakes, so don't consider doing it unless you have a quality frame, quality components, a great fork and disc mounts already on your frameset.
Im building a monstercross/gravel bike...Im using road tiagra 4600 shifters. Are those shifters compatible with avid bb5 mechanical brakes? thanks.
No. They are short pull. You need long pull. Or a travel agent.
RJ The Bike Guy thank you.
OutlawCRi yeah just get the road pull versions, or TRP spyres
Cool! I did not know that. I just looked it up. Yes, there appear to be a road version.
If they came off of a mtb, theyre probably long pull?
that's a nice looking Diamondback. The new black rims and disc brakes changed the whole look of that bike. It looks a lot better with the black rims and the disc brakes. They give the bike the look of a higher priced bike. Next upgrades would be the crankset and rear derailleur if you want to go that far with it.
Nice transformation. On a side note: I hate Avid BB7 callipers they're so damn annoying. Even if I set them up so they don't rub, they will start rubbing against the disc again in a very short while. I have not used the BB5's though. I will change mine out to the TRP Spyke.
i have the TRP spyre(road version of the spyke, less pull), best upgrade i have ever made in all honesty. Brakes dont rub, feels more powerful and best part is both pads if set up properly will wear even meaning no annoying one pad wearing quicker then the other or pushing of the disk with has the potential to slightly warp the rotor. Currently have a couple hundred miles and ever since the first adjustments, still no problem at all. Just the standard brake cable initial stretch after initial installation. I got mine off of ebay for 60 bucks, came with rotors, highly recommend if you are willing to wait a tad bit of time to get em from there, if in a hurry/need them immediately could always buy directly from TRP.
Most important thing to note though is the types of mounts your bike has for disk brakes, then buying the adapters if needed. TRP sells all the types directly from them which is great.
That is the newer post mount setup. They sell adapters for those. Search for post mount adapters.
Thanks RJ I think I found the right adapter
I’m thinking of doing the same thing I have 2 Gary fisher bikes one has disc ready rims the other doesn’t but I can swap and the newer bike has the welded fittings for hydrolic lines and the rear frame has different mounting holes but the older has mounting holes just different but this video shows it’s not that big of a deal as long as the brackets are attainable for the rear mounting holes
Nice Work Earthman
HAPPY NEW YEAR
You say here a lot but your still a very helpful person thank you for showing me how to do thks
Does anybody know whether this is possible on a road bike with drops, and if so how much it would cost roughly ?
I wouldn't do it unless the frame has mounts for disc brakes. Cheaper, easier, better to bike a bike with disc brakes.
Hey! Thanks you for this video!
I just wanted to add that the inch pound torque wrenches are much smaller than foot. they are only about 6 or 8 inches long so IU think you may have been over tightening those?
Lastly, word you could not find was I believe is "SNUG"
Thanks for the video and your time!!
please make a video about how to use addoptoer
Excellent job, RJ! Thanks. I am about to do something similar using hydraulic braking.
How much was this install all worth
Did you get the answer?
rod2k786y no
Overtly nerdy. Cleaning the discs with alcohol? Even my motorcycle is more forgiving.
Nice disc break I can use as a mirror also I have broken bolts on the disc am not sure 🤔 if going to replace it
Good demonstration on how to upgrade brakes, and very helpful. Liked and subscribed.
Now for the constructive criticism. Better lighting of the detail shots and a plain and uniform background would be advantageous. Minor points to take a good video and make it Great. Still, far better than most videos and way better than I could do.
Looks nice! My frame has the mount for the rear (front already has a disc brake). Thanks for showing me how easy it is to swap it out!
Are you going to sell this or use it yourself? I've thought about doing this to bikes that I flip but the cost of the wheels and brakes does not seem worth it. People never want to pay for upgrades.
Sell it. I already have full suspension mtn bike with hydraulic disc brakes.
Andrew Triggs ....I at times use RJ the bike guy's videos to fix bikes as a hobby. Unless you get a fantastic deal on a sought after bike you never real make your money back. Personally i just like doing it and unfortunately can't keep them all. so i don't sell them for profit just enough to get another one to fix up. My two cents worth.
This bike has 0 value. People won't even want to pay the cost of the parts.
In other cases, you might already have a decent frame and suspension. In this case, upgrading it is cheaper than buying a new bike with a similar level than your current one will be after the work.
In my case i had a Scott Mountain Bike with 12 years already with lock suspension and wheels / frame capable to support disc brakes.
Upgrading it with entry level disc brakes and a better suspension will set me back around 200£ but for those same 200 i would NEVER get a bike with those same parts.
So, really, it's about learning the cost of parts and bikes.
Also, there is a growing market for vintage bikes with updated parts. With all those hipsters walking around town, good money can be made trough them.
I've recently been to a town where this cool shop ran by this young kid was doing great. He would buy old road, city and vintage mountain bikes, for nearly nothing, strip them clean, paint them, restore what could be restored and then update them with disc brakes, led lights, incorporated usb chargers, better suspension etc.
He easily doubles the investment in each personalized bike and sells everything he makes.
Hi, i wanna buy i bike and i found a MTB Rockrider 340 26' ' black B'Twin for 214 euros here is the link:www.decathlon.ro/mtb-rockrider-340-26-negru-id_8351519.html is it good?

I was thinking of doing the same thing but now that I read your comment you're right people don't wanna pay
I have a really nice specialized MTB from 2011 and it has v brakes which kind of suck and they mess up my wheels. This helps a lot thank you!
Disc break is better than v break
Only if the disk brakes are hydraulic
Thank you so much you just saved me 30 bucks
Someone needs to count how many times he says "uhh" "uhmm" "here". 😂
Americans are redundant speakers.... If they left out all of the 'real quick's', 'right here's', 'right now's' etc, their sentences would still make sense... just an observation.
I got a nice deal on a pair of Mavic Cross max's and am considering doing this for a 1998 Specialized Stumpjumper. the dropout has a rack mount in it and it looks like it will work but im not 100% sure, really would like to use these wheels instead of parting them and just keeping the front.
The front brake is still dragging a little bit.
Yes, I noticed that also!
Cuneyt Kilic Avid Bb5's are difficult to get right.
I disagree with you. This is one of the easiest adjustable mechanical disc brakes. RJ tighten the right side of the caliper a little too much. This is it.
Cuneyt Kilic . I don't understand why you're watching a video like this? you seem like such an expert. What could you possibly learn? oh.... nevermind. you're one of those guys that spends hours stalking the internet looking for Windows of opportunity to show the masses how smart you are... tool.
Ackt_like_U_h8_it ! Looks like you are spam or too young to understand why people leave a comment. I am not an expert. In fact, nobody is the expert. Everyone who already knows many things on a particular subject learns many things from the other people. Even though if I was an expert, does that mean I do not need to watch any video? What kind of approach is that? Do you watch TV just because you feel like you are an uneducated person who also needs to learn everything by watching youtube, tv, etc...? If you watch RJ carefully, even he says ``let me know what you are thinking on this or that.'' With your aspect, he is also one of those guys that spend hours stalking the internet. I think you should learn how to interpret what people write so that you would be able to realize who is informative and who is not. If you want, you could do that. You are never too old to learn!
just bought a nice gt agressor for $250 alluminum triple triangle, i have a old ccm apex that is not longer usable, it was my first trail bike. both wheels are 26", i'm hoping to take the disc brakes from my old bike and switch it over to my new used bike.
You Are A Fuc..ing Master!

You are better than me. I would keep the cables for future bike repairs. Or, at the very least, until new kit was installed and working.
Cables wear out. It would be like reusing motor oil. Cables are cheaper.
For paying customers, yes. Most of the bikes that are brought to me are neighbor kids, family, friends. Used parts are good enough to get by. Especially when they don't have money, we would have to make a trip to buy the parts, they need the bike now, part shops are closed, I'm just trying to enjoy my day off, or whatever. A used cable will probably out-last a teenager's cheap bike. Your videos are good tho.
@@PatrickG4531 Even the bike co-op in the area uses new cables. I buy them in boxes of 100.

well this is pretty much a "no brainer" the mounting lugs are already built into the aluminum frame. duh??
yeah but bicycle people don't really know how to do things that require a small amount of mechanical knowledge
Hey RJ, I would like to see you do a daul 200mm hydraulic disc brake on a front MTB wheel.. step-by-step and what you would need to purchase to achieve it.
extra to this video you need hydraulic brake lever.
check prices on cycle part websites of your continent
just tighten the f-ing screw!! Jkjk but fr tho
great video tho
You might warp the disk, like a car wheel.
What I find confusing is that most forks now have PM mounts and yet brakes are (apparently) always sold attached to IS adapters which you simply remove and discard, but then you might also need a PM spacer depending on the size of the rotor.
So putting disk breaks on a bike that is already equipped for disk breaks.
But didn't have disc brakes.
Alot of times bike companies will have different versions of the same model all using the same frame but with different components, such as entry level model with cheap components and an expert level model with more expensive components
Very well done video. Easy to follow step by step with great video focus on each step. I am going to try this as my mountain bike front wheel just crapped out on me and the brakes to the rear wheel are not working.
I have that same bike but in blue. And I want to convert from v-brakes to disc. And this video was really helpful.

That fork and frame is cool. It can have V Brakes or Disc brakes. Awesome.
