Best chain stay protector is to wrap 550 paracord wrapped around the stay then burn it to itself at the ends. It's quiet, cheap, looks pretty awesome, and who knows when you may need paracord on the ride.
I would NOT use griptape on the chain-stay. Its highly abrasive and tends to release bits of grit. I'm not saying this would happen immediately, but over time you'd risk having little bits of abrasive gunk in your gears. Much better options out there. And if you think to use it on your shifters rub it with another piece of griptape and soften the harshness of it a bit, your fingers will thank you.
Two hacks for standard handle bar grips: 1. Inject water between grip and handlebar with a cheap syringe to get them off the handlebar. 2. Spray some standard hairspray on the handlebar to put the grips on. The hairspray will work like a lubricant while it’s wet and like glue after 1-2 hours after you attached the grips.
@@Jay-we2ek That works fine when things are new. Once you have them on for 3 years they are stuck to the handlebar and sometimes have to be cut off. Having anything between can help, acrylates are used for that specific purpose elsewhere too; gives a bit of adhesion but can be softened with water when needed.

I know that this was 5 years ago but I still love it as a newbie. Also the pacing with 10 tips in 7 min is refreshing. PS I did all the mods this past year and they are still good tips (especially in ongoing covid isolation)
The dork disc potentially saved me about a month ago. A small mishap on the trail (off the side of the trail and into a creek) knocked my derailleur out of adjustment. A bit further down the trail and thought my chain came off, only to find that the chain was riding between the cassette and the disc. While I don't know how much damage was avoided, I do know a quick adjustment on the side of the trail and I was able to make it home to properly adjust the derailleur without having to spend any money on repairs. Function should never take a backseat to appearance.
Jo Seth! Great videos! I have a hack for you. If you don't want to wrap your chainstay with 3M tape, grab an old and damaged inner tube, cut a 20 inch piece from it and wrap it around your chainstay. Secure it with zip ties. This protector will last forever
1.Change your C-clips and tie your brake cables together with zip ties 2. Put tape around your chainstay 3. Change your grips 4.Change your bar ends 5. Lube your drivetrain 6. Put grip tape on your levers 7. Change the silver cap on your brake ends 8. Remove your dork disc 9. Change your valve stems 10. Replace your stem spacers
Carbon Fibre Spacer and the Zip ties might count as upgrades as one makes your bike *wAY liGHteR* and the *pRo zIptIEs* keep the brake cable attached to the frame.
In dusty conditions cut out a strip of furnace filter about 15” x 4”; zip tie it to the frame support just behind the front wheel; small piece of tape keeps zip tie from sliding; now I don’t need to wear uncomfortable dust mask and the filter is super lite.
“Still you want to spoil your bike, but you’re totally friggin’ broke.” The way Seth says this sums up why I love Seth and this channel, and only mildly care about mtb 😂
Yeah, these cheap upgrades are actually something I may actually do or utilize, he really did well here!!! Its really hard to be original since gmbn makes a video a day!!
If you like, check his deraileur installation video, then check your derailleur set up. If it is good, you can get rid of the dork disc + you are a bit less dorky because you start to understand how your bike actually works. ;D I really enjoy that I know my bikes, can only recommend it.
The dork disc is something I will never take off my bike! I love my bikes and they are very well maintained. But my chain has shifted off the cassete and would have destroyed my wheel. I smashed my derailluer on a fast descent and shifted off the cassette by accident, it was a broken hanger and derailleur but could have been much worse. I learnt a lesson that day.
My dork disc cracked and flew off. I checked online and bike shops and they cost $15 to $25!!! I finally found an unchained abandoned rusty bike with most of its parts stripped off...took it home and removed it's dork disc and put it on my wheel. Put what's left of that bike on the curb and by the next day some metal collector took it away.
Forgot to mention...I did that because I've heard of horror stories of a perfectly set rear derailleur or the chain popping off and completely breaking the spokes and mangling the wheel.
John Nickerson I used to think so as well, it feels that way when you try it for the first time, but it turned out to be fine, I see no increased wear on the glove fingers after 6 months.
You are by far the sickest RUclips out there! What full suspension trail bike do you suggest that I get? Try to keep it around the $1500 range though! Great job!
Thanks! To be honest I think Greg Heil's article on this really hit the mark: www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-gear/buyers-guide-budget-full-suspension-mountain-bikes/
Look into direct sales models from Chain Reaction or Jenson to get some really sweet deals. Also look into VITUS or Cube bikes-- really cheap, great spec, high quality. Giant is also an awesome brand that you can find at a local dealer. If you live outside of the U.S check out Canyon (although they should be shipping to the U.S in 2017). If you're a first timer I would highly recommend you get a hardtail though. More Value, less cash, lot of fun, helps you progress.
In the UK Cube bikes have took of in a big way. But when it comes to wheels go Mavic. I bought a set of Cross Rides a few yrs back when they just came out. Real sweet wheels
For the plastic disc behind derailer An old trick for securing it on better is use a soldering iron to melt holes into it then you can zip tie it to the spokes It beats those silly plastic nob ends for sure! I do that for some of my clients when doing tune ups if they tell me they ride trails yet want to keep them on
I'm not sure I could come up with ten! Remove front brake, remove rear brake, remove stickers, remove reflectors, get those big ass grips that go all the way down the bars. Other than that you'd need to spend more than $20 which is far too much for the likes of this video!

Awesome work Seth, I get cred on the trail now when I hang out with the bros there, thanks to following these tips. Now that the dork disc has gone and the addition of odd color cable end and ties, it has turned my life about, but now broke due the cash outlay with all the added bling, I cant wait to waste my life with trying more useless tips.
Odyssey plastic Pedals were the best pedals I ever had, and you get them mostly under twenty Euro/Dollar. I am 1,93m, 95kg and broke my cranks with a lifetime warranty, but the pedals after 10 years are still alive on my BMX...
some or most neoprene chain protectors are not good, and will wear out fast, and side backwards, the best method is to cut a tube on the side and wrap it on the chain stay(s). it works on all frames, and you can get the perfect length. Dork disk is useless, but with proper rear dérailleur adjustment you don't need it, but eve nif you adjust it it will get loose quite fast,so Loctite the Rear dérailleur screws(and any other screws on your bike),temperature changes & vibrations will loosen bolts and screws so Loctite them!!!.
I wouldn't recommend the metal valve stem caps. Metal expands and contracts so a metal to metal connection can seize, especially if there is grime, salt, or corrosion. Unless you feel like lubing your stem caps to avoid that, stick to plastic.

RSA Jay. Instead of using electrical tape on your change stay use Self-Fusing Silicone Tape instead. It last a long time and works great. The only down side is that it doesn't come in very many colors. I've see white, red and black, but there might be other colors.
I use this www.amazon.com/Emergency-Repair-Tape-Self-Fusing-Silicone/dp/B00KBSWRDO
personally when using metal valve stems, i always add a small splodge of anti-seize or copper grease for good measure. nothing worse than going to pump up your tyres and finding out the stem cap has stuck!
great video nonetheless!!
This is like my 15th time watching this😂
why ?
Me too! It's the only bike upgrade video on this channel!
Same

Dude that bike looks so bad ass. Frame is my favorite color and so are the bars.
I'm big fan of your super cheap mtb upgrades video series. 👍
hey dude your videos are never boring 👌🏽👍🏼
Why would you ride your brand new bike lol
It's a joke kid
EXACTLY!!!!
oooooh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a horrible joke 😓 bikes are meant to be ridden!!!!!!
Nice one Felpel102!!!
Also make it more recognisable if it ever gets stolen... be an amazing coincidence it's the one exactly the same coloured cable ends an dust caps.. 🤔
I put strong tape right beside the handle bars, and my bike is small and green so i can remember what it looks like
exactly. A thief won't steal a bike that's hard to sell
@@KiLLJoYRUclips So, I just make by bike ugly as possible? Check.
I PUT mini gps in all my stuff. i use outside.
Pro tip for zip ties: use a fingernail clipper to cut off the excess. This will get the tails ultra short and won't be sharp!
Cutting edge pro tip!!
velotunes wow that's something I never thought of. Thanks for that tip!
Velotunes really I use proper snips.nail clippers lmfao
A knife does the best job. You can cut it all off perfectly.
You people are very very ill !!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Watching my first ever Seth bike hacks video on the last day of 2019
keep shredding Seth love the videos dude
Ha Ha same here I love everyone of Seths uploads
I know that this was 5 years ago but I still love it as a newbie. Also the pacing with 10 tips in 7 min is refreshing. PS I did all the mods this past year and they are still good tips (especially in ongoing covid isolation)
Informative, but there are places called 'local bike shops' to get bike parts and accessories. Not just Amazon.
Bike shops often times charge a lot more, defeating the purpose of a cheap upgrade.
bike shops are now more of a snob starbikes. Everythibg is a premium. Its better to bit by bit equip your homemade repair center.
Or local s-market
The dork disc potentially saved me about a month ago. A small mishap on the trail (off the side of the trail and into a creek) knocked my derailleur out of adjustment. A bit further down the trail and thought my chain came off, only to find that the chain was riding between the cassette and the disc. While I don't know how much damage was avoided, I do know a quick adjustment on the side of the trail and I was able to make it home to properly adjust the derailleur without having to spend any money on repairs. Function should never take a backseat to appearance.
fuck off
@@CUZC0M salt?
Jo Seth! Great videos! I have a hack for you. If you don't want to wrap your chainstay with 3M tape, grab an old and damaged inner tube, cut a 20 inch piece from it and wrap it around your chainstay. Secure it with zip ties. This protector will last forever
Dangit seth, you posted this vid right as i got home from getting my paycheck. I now know what to spend my money on hahaha
Luckily you won't need to spend much!

Your choice of words is fenomenal
if you don't like end crimps at all, you could solder the cable ends
You can use an old inner tube to protect the chainstay and makes your bike quieter over rough stuff
1.Change your C-clips and tie your brake cables together with zip ties
2. Put tape around your chainstay
3. Change your grips
4.Change your bar ends
5. Lube your drivetrain
6. Put grip tape on your levers
7. Change the silver cap on your brake ends
8. Remove your dork disc
9. Change your valve stems
10. Replace your stem spacers
These are not really "upgrades" these are customizations.
Carbon Fibre Spacer and the Zip ties might count as upgrades as one makes your bike *wAY liGHteR* and the *pRo zIptIEs* keep the brake cable attached to the frame.
true but its a video on cheap mtb stuff, you have to spent $100+ on any performance part
3months and I'm Still recovering financially 😉
One of the best MTB channel
Bought myself the zipties, carbon spacers, and the cable ends for my Cervelo!
what model is your cervelo
MrAlexanderHwang bikes are so simple
Amazon echo dot hookup
In dusty conditions cut out a strip of furnace filter about 15” x 4”; zip tie it to the frame support just behind the front wheel; small piece of tape keeps zip tie from sliding; now I don’t need to wear uncomfortable dust mask and the filter is super lite.

Man, I love your channel! Every video is cool and calming.
0:02 I spent my life savings 😢 a whole $90 bucks for a specialized hard rock😂
seth you should do a video on how to lube the chain and gears!
“Still you want to spoil your bike, but you’re totally friggin’ broke.” The way Seth says this sums up why I love Seth and this channel, and only mildly care about mtb 😂
Next on 10 cheap upgrades for your mountain bike:
Multicolor wheels
Love the video. Simple, cheap yet effective
Yeah, these cheap upgrades are actually something I may actually do or utilize, he really did well here!!! Its really hard to be original since gmbn makes a video a day!!
MTBdropIN yes I know what you mean! I think he did great. I may have to try sone
MTBdropIN GMBN doesn't do very many videos with hacks like this though
i needed this soo bad 🤣🤣👌👌
5:12 - Just bought a beginner MTB - The dork disc is staying on because THIS dork doesn't truly understand the implications! LOL
If you like, check his deraileur installation video, then check your derailleur set up. If it is good, you can get rid of the dork disc + you are a bit less dorky because you start to understand how your bike actually works. ;D
I really enjoy that I know my bikes, can only recommend it.
There are chrome metal spoke protectors, I have one and think it's cool
Get a metal one like an old Schwinn had, and just learn to use the limit screws so it doesn’t hunt for an extra low gear that’s not there.
This is me right now. I have no money and this helped me. Thx!!
Just spent all my money on a new Norco Storm this video is invaluable awesome tips and very well put together. I just subscribed!!
If the high/low limit screws are dialed in the chain should never shift off either the rear cassette or front chainring.
Max fine be a noob then
@@metalhalide4043 ...unless the derailleur gets bent, which is exactly what he said happened.
grip tape will trash fingers of your gloves
John Nickerson I have grip tape on my dropper remote. 3 months later gloves are still fine.
Chris Barger have on shiftier, half season hole in finger and thumb
John Nickerson I used to think so as well, it feels that way when you try it for the first time, but it turned out to be fine, I see no increased wear on the glove fingers after 6 months.
i used to have skin, now i just have bones to press my shifters with xD
then put tiny plastic pads on the gloves. better if its custom made, and if it looks clean.
I'm really satisfied with myself I did the zip tie cable tidy up trick before I even knew it was a proper Cheapo bicycle tip.
Zip tie a piece of an old inner tube onto the chain stay to protect it from chain-slap.
What can't inner tubes be used for ha
JB Bike a condom... wait... 😂
Aaron Doyle gubbins lmao
You are by far the sickest RUclips out there! What full suspension trail bike do you suggest that I get? Try to keep it around the $1500 range though! Great job!
Thanks! To be honest I think Greg Heil's article on this really hit the mark: www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-gear/buyers-guide-budget-full-suspension-mountain-bikes/
Carter & Dayson's Biking as
Look into direct sales models from Chain Reaction or Jenson to get some really sweet deals.
For the plastic disc behind derailer
An old trick for securing it on better is use a soldering iron to melt holes into it then you can zip tie it to the spokes
It beats those silly plastic nob ends for sure!
I do that for some of my clients when doing tune ups if they tell me they ride trails yet want to keep them on
😟
You should ALWAYS have a valve cap fitted, it prevents dirt getting into the valve.
I'm not even joking when I say this the first 17 seconds of the video are all true completely true he truly understands me
Great vid, great comments and music too. Love the use of the Orange p7 as a devotee of the brand for 35 years from the other side of the pond. 👍👍
Can u do a video like this but for bmx bikes ?
XderpyfishX 1 he does mountain biking mostly though
Mike Morrow yeah ik , but he occasionally does bmx videos
I'm not sure I could come up with ten! Remove front brake, remove rear brake, remove stickers, remove reflectors, get those big ass grips that go all the way down the bars. Other than that you'd need to spend more than $20 which is far too much for the likes of this video!
Seth's Bike Hacks hey I do a lot of bike videos becuase I just got a cannondale catalyst go check out my last video and can u coment to if it's a good starter bike
Seth's Bike Hacks good point , pretty cool you answered and also your my favorite biking RUclips
I bought a 2019 Cannodale Jekyll, it's going to be a while before I recover lol.
Awesome work Seth, I get cred on the trail now when I hang out with the bros there, thanks to following these tips. Now that the dork disc has gone and the addition of odd color cable end and ties, it has turned my life about, but now broke due the cash outlay with all the added bling, I cant wait to waste my life with trying more useless tips.
bit of a dick comment, people like modding bikes, these are some good cheap mods.
When i was kid made a tail brake light to signal the rider in the back
That's cool and all but I can't seem to remember when anybody asked?
@@SRNAR8 fuck off will you no need for that
A few coloured spokes to add a unique "custom" look
+Andrew Rogerson good one
are u indian???
Odyssey plastic Pedals were the best pedals I ever had, and you get them mostly under twenty Euro/Dollar.
I am 1,93m, 95kg and broke my cranks with a lifetime warranty, but the pedals after 10 years are still alive on my BMX...
“All high end bike come with them (lock ons) pre installed”
My $249 Schwinn Boundary came with them!
Schwinn IS high end. You just got a budget version of a high end product line. It's still not cheap, it's lower end from Schwinn.
some or most neoprene chain protectors are not good, and will wear out fast, and side backwards, the best method is to cut a tube on the side and wrap it on the chain stay(s). it works on all frames, and you can get the perfect length.
Dork disk is useless, but with proper rear dérailleur adjustment you don't need it, but eve nif you adjust it it will get loose quite fast,so Loctite the Rear dérailleur screws(and any other screws on your bike),temperature changes & vibrations will loosen bolts and screws so Loctite them!!!.
personally i like my chainstay protector. it almost eliminates chain rattle and looks really good, i have a race face one.
A plastic child seat with orange reflective strips gaffa taped on to the seat post always gives you that ‘cool’ edge on the trails.
Yeah, a real head turner..
I wouldn't recommend the metal valve stem caps. Metal expands and contracts so a metal to metal connection can seize, especially if there is grime, salt, or corrosion.
Unless you feel like lubing your stem caps to avoid that, stick to plastic.
I textured my shift levers using a wood burner.
You stippled your shift levers? lol
Yup works like grip tape but never comes off.
MotoOutdoors good idea. Done it to a p320 grip module, would have never thought of doing it to my shift levers haha
MotoOutdoors an old BMX trick is to use gripper pen rubber gripper piece on the brake levers to cushion them a little
Yea a friend wanted me to do it so his Glock gen 3 so I was looking for any plastic pieces to practice on lol
Great inexpensive tips. Thanks, Bicycle John
grip tape to protect your chainstay is a terrible idea. You'll just wear your chain out prematurely.
Slip tape would be good there. lol
That’s why you can just buy a new chain.
maybe you think that but for some people its useful
NOTE: Aluminum bar ends hurt when they hit you in a crash more than rubber or plastic
What's a crash?
Not much, but they make terrible noise on the street
Thanks guys this will help me out a lot because I just got into MTB properly.
2:38 Haha no way i just ordered these yesterday!
You should do a video on why you use dropper posts,or the best for the money! Just an idea tho
Seth’s life hacks are the only one that works
When looking for stem caps I saw there were different sizes available. So how do I choose the correct size of stem cap for my bike
Tape measure would be the best guess a would say
if your on about the top cap they're usually all the same size!
