Wow! Best brake tutorial ever! I'm a 70 yr old female with scant mechanical skills. After watching this, I fixed my brakes in about 15 minutes. Thank you so much!
Calvin is by far the best tutor - so clear, so simple, so informative, so modest. How I wish I could have a whole week being tutored by someone like him. Thank you to Calvin and Park Tools for a great video.
I was having a b**ch of a time adjusting my V-brakes, after watching this video now my brakes are properly aligned and my rims turn smoothly. Thank you and everyone over at park tools.

Park Tool really did humanity a solid by making these videos. They serve not only as an excellent resource for people repairing bikes but also as a gold standard for instructional videos. I hope the people who made these tutorials feel real good about what they did.
Clear, straight and direct instructions. Unselfish transfer of know-how to all of us (cyclists). This is a golden standard in youtube tutorials. Keep up with good work. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I paid good money repeatedly to bike shops and services in Bucharest (Romania) and they simply couldn't make an satisfactory adjustment to my rear brakes, they were not centered, on one side the pad touched the rim slightly at every rotation on one spot (not in the bike shop but after a few km) and on the other it was too far away from the rim. I simply centered using the little screws according to your video and the brakes are the best now. How the guys, supposedly bike mechanics, were not able to do it is beyond me. They were either stupid or lazy or both. When I came back and told them the problem, they simply stated that my e-bike is atypical, it's too wide, and they couldn't do a better job. I did it myself using your video and I have two left hands, I'm a computer programmer, never the slight inclination to be a handy man. The explanations and the way your video was recorded, with the right angles, is simply AWESOME. You are the best! Like and subscribe!

Hi Calvin I've got 11" ape hangars on my mongoose fat bike, and I need to install longer cables (brake/shifter) to acommodate them. I see your vids for upright/drop bars. Any for my style?
Man I always had trouble centering these brakes and did not know the purpose of the side screws. This video opened my eyes! Thank you very much for the professional demonstrations!!! ❤
Wish I had these videos back in the 90's when I was still a kid running my bike all day. At least I know now how to fix my brake pads like a real man. Somebody give this man a raise! And a platinum youtube button and a mountain of $$$. He deserves it.
This tutorial actually helped me put on some new shimano brakes I just bought. Very helpful, thanks so much. I somehow broke my old v brakes when riding my bike doing stuff, and one of the arms kept moving parallel with the rim; it had extra play that shouldn’t have been there. Every time I made a fine adjustment in the pad, that extra play in the arm would fill in whatever adjustment I made, and they just weren’t working quite right. I bought some new high quality brakes, and immediately went to this guy, Calvin jones, and of course he helped me install my brakes with this video. I even bought the same grease he uses and it definitely seemed very nice and high quality grease. Thanks a bunch
Extremely helpful video, my bike has been sitting idle for months in the garage because it needed a new inner tube and brake replacement and brake cable adjustment. The task was so daunting I have been putting it off for months but with your excellent tutorial I have mange to change the tyre put on new brake pads and leaving the rest till tomorrow. It's giving me a great feeling of achievement getting this done Cheers

Clear, instructional video. Thank you! I've been riding a bike for half a century but only just begun to tackle my own repairs. William Reeves' comment was the final solution for my rubbing brakes.
The procedures are broken up into logical stages and the steps are clearly explained. The purpose of specialised bike tools is demystified and the components of the V Brake are helpfully identified. A great video for anyone wanting to learn about bicycle maintenance and mechanics.
Thank you so much for this video!! I’ve been struggling to find the answer to how to adjust my brakes cuz I’m still learning about bikes and how to fix them up. I’ve been pointed to adjusting that tension screw by damn near everyone, but I knew that wasn’t the problem. Seeing the tension on the line setting the brakes too close is what the real issue is! You said it bang on “if you set the brakes too close if the rim gets out of true it’ll rub on it.” That’s the part is needed to adjust!! Goodness gracious I cannot believe it took me this long to hunt down the answer and also the best and easiest way to understand it. I’m literally about to go outside and adjust my brakes before I head out on another ride. Bless you for being so clear and simple!! Amazing teacher ✨🙏🏽✨💯
Fantastic video. I was getting frustrated trying to 'just do it' on my own. Then I found this video. It helped me install the brake cables on my new bike in a jiffy. Love that he shows what not to do as well while he's going along (e.g. "this is too tight..."). I learned that it's still more art than science in terms of getting them set just right at the end. But this is the best video out there on the subject. Nice close-ups and shows you exactly what you need. Great job and thank you for posting this. Very very helpful!
10/10!!! This helped so much! I was struggling with this forever and I thought it was a professional bike shop problem because no matter how much I adjusted the wire it would keep rubbing on the break pads, I'm broke so I dont have the funds to get it professionally fixed so thank God I found this video.

This is the best tutorial to get your brakes right i have seen by far. I had a problem getting my new v brakes just right, after watching a few videos most of them just say you just do this or that or they are infront of the camera when setting them so you dont see what they are doing. My brakes are not set perfectly so thank you very much for this great tutorial.
At 9:32 . It's easier, if you don't have a 4th hand tool, to disconnect (your brakes allow for this) the return springs of the brake arms. That way you don't have to fight against their tension while trying to make a very fine adjustment of the arms' position. Afterwards, just reengage the springs. This is a great video!
super informative and detailed video, i recently got hired in a sporting goods store and one of the "side tasks" is to make adjustments to different types of brakes, very often the v brakes types and this video helped me understand it much better! thank you kind sir!
Very well done. Park Tool rocks. I will have to look it up, but you are a publicly traded company I am buying stock. All your videos are great and Calvin you have saved me a TON of money on bike repair. Thanks again.
That was amazingly clear and easy to understand. I have been playing with bikes for quite a long while but didn't know exactly what all the adjustments were for this type of brake. Simply brilliant!
I’ve been riding about as long as I could walk, and could always handle everything myself-except derailed and brake adjustments. I guess I should learn how to adjust my derailers next.
I’ve been working on bikes for years but brakes have changed and your excellent tutorial is extremely helpful. Thank you so much for your great explanation.
please people, before you start with this, make sure the wheel is exactly centered so the rim is exactly in the middle. that's what they forget to tell you in this video, where their wheel is off centre a few millimetres to the left side of the bike. and then you'll never get it right. And don't forget that a new inner cable can stretch a couple of millimetres the first few times it's pulled. that's also not mentioned in this video.
12:43 perfectly centered , 12:54 misaligned again. I am so frustrated with my Vbrakes in my cycle. I keep aligning them but after few uses, they again pull each other and kiss the rim causing perpetual braking. Don't buy a cycle with Vbrakes, else you spend your entire life aligning them.
@@KungFuBroFist I have the same issue as @Gunjan J. It's like every second day with these v brakes. Is there a video that can help me with removing the cable, lubing the cable housing, and then re installing them again?
Right on. Concise yet detailed and specific on the sticking points. Was able to get my sons Schwin back up and braking smoothly due to your fine work. Thank you.
I just bought my kid a mountain bike and had to install the front brakes myself. The instructions that came with the bike were convoluted and made zero sense, even for someone who's pretty good at figuring things out. I just couldn't seem to get the pads in place with everything centered properly. Thank you so much for the simple explanation and demonstration. I finally had the brakes installed in no time!

Works on my rig. Try tightening the pinch bolt more, and try lubing the cable housing, the cable can get stuck in the housing and pull on the brakes.
@@KungFuBroFist I have the same issue as @Gunjan J. It's like every second day with these v brakes.
Is there a video that can help me with removing the cable, lubing the cable housing, and then re installing them again?
Probably the most clear and easy to understand video around! Thank you!!!
Sounds like Al Bundy went into bike maintenance after he left the shoe sales business.
Hight quality and crystal clear instructions with tips to understand it intuitively, this is the ultimate guide for v brake adjustment.
Right on. Concise yet detailed and specific on the sticking points. Was able to get my sons Schwin back up and braking smoothly due to your fine work. Thank you.
Fantastic instructions and visuals. It is extremely helpful for a beginner cyclist like myself. Thank you so much.
thank you guys... u are the best Tutor ever seen on youtube...so precious your teachings!

This is one of the most helpful and comprehensible channels I have encountered. Great work!
This is by far the best video I saw about the subject. I was struggling to correctly adjust my brakes, but with all your tips, not anymore. :)
Thank you for this! More brake power Vbrake is Up and Running 2021!
