Super helpful! Thank you. My boys couldn't ride their bikes and the shops all have 2-3 week wait times for repairs. You made me look like a hero and it took ~10 minutes. When it's good, the Internet is just magical. What a time to be alive.
Absolutely some of the best repair content on youtube period. So much attention to detail and never a sacrifice of quality for the sake of clickbait non-sense. Much appreciated!
My biggest problem is lining up the pads to the rims. I get it perfect, try to hold it in place as I tighten the nut, and the pad moves on me every time.
I watched this video and fixed my issues in no time!! Hey Park Tools - Calvin Jones is fantastic! Calvin spends time explaining exactly what to look for, how to do it right, all in simple easy to understand language with great demonstrations, and/or animations. Please give him a raise or bonus. After watching him, I want to do more work on my bike and I will need more Park Tools!!
I was having trouble adjusting the brakes on the Razor Flashback Scooters for my boys. I called Razor customer service and they literally sent me a link to your video... that's how helpful this video is🤘🏽
I have heard some on other vids complaining how hard it is to use them really rough on the little boys hands.I remembered as a teen I would put a few drops of fine oil between outer and inner of the cables and hold it up until it soaks all the way through.Worked like a charm.
Thanks, Calvin! This video saved my butt as I was putting together a neighbor's kid's bike this morning. Is anyone else amazed at how Calvin's hands never get dirty in his repair videos? Either he has oil/dirt/grease-repellent hands or he goes through a gallon of degreaser a week. Anyways, keep up the good work!
I enjoy Calvin's videos so much that I watch them even when I don't need to fix anything. I don't even have this type of brakes on any of my bikes. Still it's fun to see how they would work.
Best video on this I have seen. Been trying to adjust my kids bikes and couldnt figure out how to center them. Now I know... And knowing is half the battle.
I have never been good at getting these types of brakes adjusted (didn't have youtube back when I was trying though). This video made it crystal clear. Well done! I bought my daughter (7 years old) a drift trike. Since adjusting the brake, I am leaning to replacing it totally. The pads have no cams and the brake lever is rather flimsy and far from the grip. I'd have gladly paid an additional $50 or so for the trike with a better brake.
Thanks for the detailed tutorial and for pointing out the caliper differences. That is truly appreciated for newbies like me. Keep up the quality videos 🙏🏽
If only I knew all this years ago, so many problems would have been solved. Thank you so much! My current daily beater has these brakes - now I can adjust them.
It was Campagnolo that reintroduced side pull brakes in '68. When Merckx won the Tour in 69 with these brakes, everybody started to use them. In the 60's almost everybody used center pull brakes.
Great video. I watched some others and the said to set the toe in, and how much to toe the pads in, but didn't say how to do it. I'm working on my grand daughters bike, she'll be much happier with the brakes now that I know what to do. The old v pads squealed and wouldn't stop the bike as well as they should.
Great video to explain most possible issues and solutions for side-pull brake calipers. Only feedback is on brake pads "don't need to touch exactly at same time", if the contact is only partially out of timing with light pressure it is probably ok, but with more adequate pressure it is still off time, I find the pads wear unevenly. So, if arms have been centred as much as possible, once pad-wear becomes visibly different, I rotate the pads to opposite sides. Lastly, I wish my bicycle and hands remained this clean during maintenance! Mine are always blackened 🙈
Very thorough video but I never realised adjusting bike brakes could be so complicated and need so many different tools. Will take my bike to a shop as don’t have all these tools
I just started a job where I assemble stuff and the main thing is bicycles. I'm working through a 2 month back log of bikes so at least 1 out of 4 are damaged. Bent rim here, bent forks there, missing parts, heck, I had the forks fall right out of a bike today, bearings and seals all over. Found a manufacturing error on an EZ bike, the pin hole was way below the pin where the forks and handlebars meet, so the unit would not stay together and there was a shallow cut below that. The machine must have been wigging out that day. Adjusting brakes is a pain and I will be watching this video many times!
This vid is very helpful. I'm glad you mentioned some torque settings also. Calvin is the man! That bass/music at the start reminded me of Public Image. Maybe you could replace the track with that😊
Amazing! SAved me another trip to the shop where i just blindly let them fix stuff. I had some kind of drag and i realized one of the pads was rubbing, i happen to have some useful wrenches around and you taught me how to center them! Once i saw the wheel rotating i knew i was good! Thanks! Also my bike is super dirty, your clean bike is quite a contrast, ha!
Great infromation and excellent presentation. I really appreciated the info on setting toe as I do expereince irritating brake squeal from time to time. Off-topic. Does anyone else think that Liberty insurance has absolutely stupid commercials?
Where was this video my entire childhood, nearly 40 and now working on my daughters bike, and this just taught me what i thought was witchcraft until now!
Phew. That system is a nightmare when you have no clue what you're doing or what each piece does thank you so much for the information that I should've known before trying to fix my brakes
Thank you so much! I could not get my side pull caliper brakes to be centered until viewing your video and seeing how you adjusted the two nuts on the front in concert with the one on the back
The quick release on my front brake was set open when the brake was tightened by the shop so now I cant take my wheel off with any easy. Thanks for the guide
Wow, this video is exactly what I need. After searching and watching around 5 different videos I am so glad I found this one! Thank you so much! One question, how long should pads last?
What a wonderful video! I just got my little one a used bike and he gave me some replacement brake pads with it but I had no idea how to adjust everything and they got really wonky 😅
Thank you so much I have a gt dyno and the brakes have been goffy I have been trying to figure it out with no luck and just like the other guy who left a comment I also watched several videos that lead me nowhere then I came across your video and boom fixed my brake problems. Thank you so much big thumbs up on your videos. God bless
My cable side pad seemed to refuse to return to the initial position after using the handle no matter what I did 😅 Managed to adjust them with this video. Thanks! 🙏
Can this explain everything else in my life? He is clear, simple, on point, knowledgeable, and his voice isn't annoying. Great video. Thank you.

That's because YOU ARE a hero
Good parent moment

The biggest headache of adjusting the breaks is centering the break pads. Finally someone showing clearly how its done. Thanks a ton!
My biggest problem is lining up the pads to the rims. I get it perfect, try to hold it in place as I tighten the nut, and the pad moves on me every time.
Even after decades of thinking I knew how to adjust these brakes, you have taught me new things. Thank you.
This is the the the best video for side pull breaks. Thanks a million times. 🎉.
The centering chapter was exactly what I needed! Thank you so much for the straightforward easy to follow video
Was it a case of loosening front and back nuts. Centering and tightening again?
@@funkyprepper yes that's about it, squeeze the brakes a few times and make sure it stays
I watched this video and fixed my issues in no time!!

You bloody legend. I am being Santa assembling a bike and this has helped me so much. Less the specialist tools I don’t have. Thanks.

This saved me so much time, I procrastinated it for months, then I decided to change my bike tires and now add back my brake, thank you.
I enjoy Calvin's videos so much that I watch them even when I don't need to fix anything. I don't even have this type of brakes on any of my bikes. Still it's fun to see how they would work.
I wish all tutorials were this informative and easy to understand.
Best video on this I have seen. Been trying to adjust my kids bikes and couldnt figure out how to center them. Now I know... And knowing is half the battle.
This was a life saver as my Toddler bike had no instructions on setting this brake style up. Thank you!
Чудесное пояснение у меня кантилеверные им 30 лет как жаль что раньше не мог найти такой качественный контент - браво .
Absolutely brilliant, as always. I can’t stress just how good these are. Cheers.

These videos are so good. I've learned something from each one I've watched. Things I hadn't considered before.
Very thorough video, with no shortcuts, and clearly explained.
I can’t explain to you guys how much this video means to me. It is my fucking savior
Very well presented, I wish all RUclips "how to" video's were put together like this. Very good job.

Got a new bike and scratching my head on how to align the side-pull brakes. This video is beyond excellent.
