Urban Policy in

A conversation with Sanjeev Sanyal, member of the Prime Minister Economic Advisory Council on Urban Policy in India. Under #Prime #Minister #Narendra #Modi there has been a shift in the way funds are being allocated for urban projects. Instead of one model rules all policy formulation, every city is getting project funding that it needs. Earlier during the #UPA era the central government decided everything and #JNNURM funded buses and water projects.
Hence , even hilly #cities got low floor buses that were unsuitable for the terrain, while water pipelines were planned, funding taken by the state government but were never laid or completed.
Even the Prime Minister Awaas Yojana in urban areas is geared towards giving subsidies or loans to poor to make their own homes instead of depending upon cardboard houses made by the government. This mean the involvement of CPWD/PWD in constructing homes for the poor is going down.
According to Sanyal, Smart Cities are also being reimagined by the cities themselves and projects like redeveloping existing markets like Chappan lane in Indore or redeveloping the heritage area in Surat are being done under this scheme.

Govt is issuing funds to develop cities and the state governments are misusing the funds that are allocated for developing the cities and villages. still, we are living in such unhygienic places, with no proper roads, drainages, traffic signals, lines.. no parks, etc.. its been 75 years since independence we are not having properly planned cities yet. Central govt should bring a strict policy and make sure that each and every fund allocated for cities should be used for the development

Most of the state governments that are misusing the funds are from the same party that runs the central government, the CMs being appointed with the full support and approval of the PM and Union Home Minister.

Buddy, this is not an overnight process. Probably in 5 yrs for newer cities, 10 yrs for older cities and 15 yrs for ancient cities may be needed to change them completely.

I think Sanjeev Sanyal is out of his depth in matters architectural and town planning. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder about the West. It's been 75 years since independence and yet 15 % of the population has no access to toilets, only 50% have access to clean drinking water 60 % of the population in Mumbai live in slums. Please get real and address real problems instead of railing against people who have solved or are actively solving most of their problems.

I thought I'd be able to watch an interesting nuanced discussion on economics and policy. After 15 mins of hearing the words "top down", "Cartesian", "Euclidean" enough times to kill a man playing a drinking game and the other side interrupting unprovoked and trying to ask leading questions; I gave up. What poor display of politics and journalism on a platform where the audience would be smart enough to cut through your marketing and drama.
