nice, thanks for the review. It would have been interesting to see it the other way around, 5'9 at the pool and 5'10 in the ocean. For me, I found that the pool requires less volume. I sort of wish I had taken my Mashup to waco. I guess it is a good excuse to go again. :)
Hey thanks for the comment man. You shred this board. And yeah I’ve heard people like a few less liters in pool, although think they sink a bit more? But I guess moreso to fit in pocket, and not paddling out means doesn’t matter as much. I had a session today in good waist to overhead waves and it lit up. Best session in a while 90’s shred style. Just move it around and mash up stuff. It’s an awesome I kinda love it now haha. Yeah in retrospect, an employee at Waco recommended the board. It was under my radar didn’t know the model, thought ok this looks cool - and crazy how that worked out. Mashup is an essential for the pool.
For 170 pounds and you surf well you could go for a 5 6 30L easily I once bought a 5 10 and sold if few weeks after (too big) now got a 5 6 (im 160 pounds) very happy but prefer my dart art surfeye 😊 In my opinion bigger waves less volume Good video and amazing pool too (wish they build one in portugal too)
For sure, thanks for the comment. I hear you on the sizing, I tend to like my boards generally a bit bigger. I’m in good shape but age, wear and tear = volume and paddle power are my best friends and I prioritize them over performance. I once tried to size down my Pod Mod back in the day (to 5’6) and just didn’t like the lack in paddle power, so prob still traumatized from that lol. Dark Arts boards rip, I’m sure you love yours. I like the extra push, weight, and speed the extra dimensions of a board can give you also. To each their own though and in the end - whatever gets you in the water, catching waves and enjoying the experience is all that matters.
Great review; I haven't had the chance to surf many bowling waves like that on mine. I'm amazed you are riding such a long, thick model, but it's working well; I get a lot of neck pain, top tip. Looking good🤙 Looks like Encinitas?
Yup paddling with less arch and head down def helps my neck, so as long as it can float me for that. I ride lots of bigger boards and have gotten better in than. Mashup lets me paddle right on the cusp of being able to keep my head down, but luckily I can, just gotta be in the zone a bit more. Thanks for the comment. I’m 5’10 and 172ish pounds. I like my boards with a bit more volume. Could prob do a 5’7 for my size - but float is your friend. Most people who’ve went smaller on the Mashup seem to have regretted it. It’s not as groveley as it looks - very high performance. Thanks for stopping by.
Will a 6'0 mashup be good as a first time shortboard to progress skills? I am 6'0 168 lbs. Been riding mid lengths for a few years can do small maneuvers down the line . Thanks!
Cool and nice on the progression. It’s a bit tricky cause I initially would say it’s not really best for moving onto smaller boards, as its more nimble then they advertise. But if you size it if enough maybe. I’ve had boatier boards for sure. ButI think 6’0 could be big enough, but maybe even 6’2. Or if you wanna cruise more like a Midlength style on a smaller board, I’d suggest the Seaside in 6’0, esp if you are you or a back foot surfer and like quad.
Great content guy! I'm an intermediate 5'6 1/2 tall/160lb looking to buy my first hybrid. Can't decide between 5'9 or 5'10 with both at 32L. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Btw, I've tried a 5'6 30L and surfed in 1-2ft mushy beach break. I struggled paddling a bit but was able to maneuver well. I'm also very determined to make it work. Thanks!
Hey thanks for the positive comment and hope you’re well. Hmm that’s a tough decision and same one I made for this Mashup lol. Which brand/board model exactly? I don’t think you mean the Mashup as it’s Volume is a bit more than you stated. The board design besides the liters will matter. Ultimately though, I’d always advise ‘more board’ for intermediates. You are not going to lose much by going up one inch, you’re only going to gain a little more paddle power and drive, which will benefit you at your stage. Let me know it that helps or which model exactly and can provide more input. For now I say 5’10.
