I really don’t like surfing my 5’7 mashup over 5ft. When it gets into 6-8 I don’t even consider it so it’s validating to hear you had the same somewhat frustrating experience trying to surf 6-8 onshore haha which…on the central coast of CA where I live…is typical in the winter so it’s usually my early fall board. Honestly, I bought a Lost RNF instead that I surf before I get into my step up. It handles some size and critical sections way better way better. Thanks for the honest review bru !
About the same weight as you but a little taller (5'11") and just started ridging one 5'7" (30L) in Nicaragua in waist/ chest conditions. So far so good! Still getting used to is as I usually ride fish. The only occasional detrimental thing I have noticed is my feel are a little big (11s) and sometimes I can feel the heel or toes hanging over the ridge in the back as it drops away, so I'll slip. I may have to wax to the rails back there or put a tail pad on. Great channel.
@@studiotessellate I did. I used it at madras and it felt like was in-between conditions there. I.e. when it was smaller I woudl use a fish. When it got bigger more powerful I wanted more board. I also rode it a playgrounds and lances lefts.
Skipper, I want to get this as my next board and need some input as to sizing. I'm more of a upper level beginner and want to start surfing with more turns in mind. I'm 5'8" around 175-178 and I've been surfing on a 5'10" sweet potato, a 6'8" hybrid funboard, and a 6'2" Jack's surf fish twin. Depending on the waves I bounce between the three but when the beaches become more punchy and fast I have a hard time with control and turning. Of the 3 boards the fish twin is around 38L. I'm debating between the the 5'10" and everything in between to 5'6". Any suggestions would be appreciated and keep the reviews coming!
Hey Jeff! I would probably get something in 5'10" size. But to be honest, this board is meant to be surfed shorter with less volume. It may feel too corky at 35L and can go out of control once you hit bumps and white water. Have you ever considered getting a mid length? :)
I’ll add that I find the mashup is super fun when it’s clean and turns on a dime. Like most epoxy, I find when things get textured it paddles mediocre and isn’t the best.
Heya I'm thinking of getting the Mashup as a single quiver board - but you mentioning the corkiness and that it doesn't handle head+ waves well puts me a bit off. Did you re-surf it in bigger conditions again? Our levels are similar - you seem to have tried quite a lot of boards - What other faves do you have and whats their pro/con over the mashup? Thanks a lot :)
I just got mine. :) I think you are surfing the board pretty good. I've only been out so far on a 1' day. but my Soloshot took a crap. :( However the board in 1' is epic. LOL
Looking forward to it Thomye. I know socal (e.g. Bolsa, HB, MB) beach breaks can be gutless. So I’m curious to hear your review on how the Mashup performs out here too bcz the Mashup is advertised to do well in weak/gutless (poor/fat) small waves, but a lot of reviewers are saying to volume UP for those type of waves. And the Mashup needs bigger or stronger waves to do well at “normal” Liter-age. So IMO that defeats the purpose of the Mashup and fits the description of the Dom 2.0. Thoughts from the both you?
@@rjcplus9 Hey Richie! I did review on the Mashup in gutless 2-3 ft waves (beach break) in NY. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/ddi4_2h2qNE/видео.html For shitty/crappy waves, I would volume up. So, I’m pretty happy with the 5’8” for these conditions. I would go smaller (5’6”) for better waves, like the ones I surfed in Dominican Republic. I think, at the end it depends on your level of surfing. If you’re advanced surfer, you will be able to get around with smaller size Mashup in crappy waves. For beginner/intermediates it can get challenging on smaller size Mashup. After all it’s pretty much a shortboard. The Mashup won’t replace your Fish/Mini Simmons/groveler as well as giving you more advantage to catch more waves. It will allow you to get more performance in small waves. Hope this helps!
@@rjcplus9 speaking of Dominator2. The Mashup has more foam up front compared to D2. Beginners/intermediates would find Mashup to be friendlier in terms of paddling and getting into the waves. D2 has more advantage in terms of performance. It’s more nimble, you can get more precise turns, aggressive turns and better rail work. Hope this helps!
@Richie Usually when I volume up for weaker waves, I also want to go shorter and wider, which was why the Baked Potato was such a good board for me and also the Seaside. The thing about going shorter is to make sure you don't volume up too much. since a shorter board then puts more of the foam under your paddle, also the width of the shorter board helps too (more bang for the minimal volume increase also helps keep performance up with less swing weight). The issue with the Dom2, Maushup, SciFi when voluming up is that you are going longer. So for me, the idea wasn't to fill the same gap as the seaside. I wanted mine to just perform better in slightly better waves. I would recommend anyone getting this board, to get it for these reasons: 1) need or want better performance than the seaside in comparable waves 2) need a step-up for the seaside or other super groveler in better waves 3) want the same performance as the dom2 in a shorter package that grovels better in smaller waves 4) just need a new board and want the latest The idea of voluming up this board seems odd to me. The point would be to grovel better in weaker waves. if that is the case, why not just get the seaside. That thing has been proven time and time again. Without saying too much though, I have surfed the Mashup on two terrible gutless days, one small and the other a bigger but super soft day. The mashup has exceeded my expectations on both occasions. I hope to get my review out soon but my Soloshot stopped working altogether. Not sure how I will manage, maybe surf a surfline cam spot and borrow the footage.
Nice review - some great rides too! Can you explain what qualities make a difference in a board when comparing bigger waves vs. smaller waves? I don’t understand the nuance of that yet.
Thank you, Alex. So, the thing that's doing the work when you 're just planning down the line and driving is rocker and how much foam is overall on the surface area. That's what's kind of of like making it go. The tail is a nuance for turns. Like the swallow tail would feel more carvy comparing to the round/diamond tail. So, most solid boards for small waves have flat rocker or low entry rocker, more surface area under your chest. The Mashup has a medium entry rocker so, it doesn't really qualify as a small wave board IMO. Even they beefed it up with the foam under the chest area, it's still not gliding into the waves as easy as as the Mini Simmons or standard fish for instance. You would really need to position yourself to catch waves at the same spot as if you were on a high performance shortboard. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Feels corky because you got it a little too big. It's got a ton of foam under the chest so you need to size it like an everyday board and not like a small wave board. I've been surfing the 5'8 for a while now and initially thought the same thing until I got used to it and I've got 15lbs on you. The swell we got a couple weeks ago I took my 5'8 out in full winter gear (so probably 190lbs in total) and the board felt perfect in 4-7ft surf. I know it's been a while and I you've moved on from Friewires, but you should really try a smaller size if you get a chance. Especially now that we're shedding rubber, I think you'd really enjoy a 5'7 or 5'6. Just run it as a twin + 1 for the best performance and push it hard!
Hi , you quote your height as 5' 9 and you say that's your 5' 8 mashup your holding . When you're standing with the board standing on it's nose beside you it's obviously standing taller than you so it's longer than your 5' 9 height but you say it's a 5' 8 . How does that work ???????
I’d really like to see your footage of the 6-8’ days.. paddling out, getting wiped out and the occasional wave. Most don’t share this stuff but I think it’s good to see the struggle sometimes!
Hey Charles, I wish my Soloshot worked properly the first 2 days when it was "firing". I was out of focus the whole time. But I will include the struggle at the next review!
It didn't look like you surfed it bigger than what we would call 3 foot here in New Zealand, maybe you guys have a different scale but i would call that kind of grovel conditions. But it looked like it went well and you had fun.. Rock on.
Thank you, Richie. If I had good waves in my backyard with more power and consistency, then I would be fully satisfied with 5'6". I wouldn't need that extra foam at all. Plus I wear 5mm wetsuit/7mm boots and gloves from Dec-April which add 10 lbs to my weight. I'm pretty satisfied with 5'8" to surf shitty beach break with gutless waves in New York. Cheers!
Thanks for the review Skip! You are right, I think the larger waves are likely pushing pushing the upper limit of this boards range spectrum. However, do you think the feeling you are experiencing is from the higher volume? Appreciate its for your home break, but suspect is might be a volume issue sitting above the water? Thinking of getting one to replace my Evo! Let us known if you try a 2+1 setup. Cheers, Mike
I think it's from experience riding the boards from a higher volume. For instance, I've been riding Album Twinsman 6'0" @37L in Varial foam. Even it's got 4L over my Mashup, it won't feel corky when you ride it. It goes well over the foam and doesn't bounce like a ping pong ball. The whole board Mashup is like a EPS foam blank wrapped in shell (Helium). It's super light. I will try to get out again on bigger day when it's clean!
Hey T Goodman! In my opinion, Dominator 2 grovels much better in small crappy/bumpy waves than the Mashup. It's much more stable going over texture even flat spots with less bogging doing sharp turns. So, for poor surf 1-4 ft, I would prefer to surf D2 instead of the Mashup. The Mashup goes incredibly well and easy in clean/semi clean surf and I would prefer to surf it in 3-5 ft waves and probably 6-8 ft on a good point break! I hope I can get to it in the next month or so! Check out my review on D2 where I surfed it in crappy waves ruclips.net/video/AVawrA9LAzk/видео.html Please let me know if you have any questions.
Not sure why you posted this review it defeats the purpose of a small wave performance board. The mashup is meant for waves between 1-4ft. You conveniently had no footage at 6-8 for which the board never would have handled anyway. Also after seeing your surfing ability I’m doubtful you know what your talking about when it comes to boards. Riding a 32 litre mashup at your size and weight doesn’t come close to intermediate or advanced specified dimensions so I would doubt you would know the difference between boards. Not sure how you can answer questions on boards as a beginner surfer.
