Hi folks, here's some detail about e-tron's more flat charging rate that a few people have correctly brought up. The devil is in the details. Video doesn't do details well unless it gets long and boring and in my attempt to streamline the charging information for mainstream viewers, the fine print was left out. I wasn't able to charge the e-tron using 150kW from a low charge state (I used Level 2) but Audi claims a 0-80% fill takes 30 minutes with 150kW (obviously temp is a factor) and that rate stays fairly consistent up to around 70-80% of pack fill. My real world experience with Taycan using using a 350kW station was just under 20 minutes with the battery at 4% with temps around 50 degrees with a fairly warm battery. It started at 260kW at first, dropped gradually to 180kW around 50%, slowed steadily to 110kW while it made its way to 80% and then 85kW after 80% (I charged to 85% for grins to see what the rate was) . Ultimately, that gave me 200 miles of range (I found the real-world range was closer to 250-260 than the 203 EPA estimate). So while the Porsche system is better (especially to get a quick 75 miles to get someone home), Taycan easily costs 35K and for the few times that many people would charge it on the road (assuming the 80-85% home charging figure is true), I'm not sure the extra range and higher charging rate is worth the money. It just depends on the individual. I'd be happy to wait an extra 20 minutes (and possibly charge more frequently on a trip) or so to save all that money and get a similar luxury experience. And yes, we can go into the Tesla charging profile which is also pretty fast but if I understand correctly, it uses a curve similar to Porsche with a slightly overall slower rate. And I'll let the internet argue abut the interior experience but I think Audi and Porsche clearly win. My opinion.
Great review Tom. I just wanted to make a point about the e-tron's charging performance. Although the max rate of 150 kW is lower than Taycan and Tesla, the e-tron charges at that rate all the way to near 80%. The e-tron is still charging at >50 kW when you hit 100%. Peak rate can be deceptive as Taycan and Tesla have more traditional charge curves that fall off dramatically at about 40% and don't allow charging to 100% in a reasonable amount of time.
Yup, and thanks for pointing that out. Some detail (that is hard to present in a video clearly) that may benefit others- I wasn't able to charge the e-tron using 150kW from a low charge state (I used Level 2) but Audi claims a 0-80% fill takes 30 minutes with 150kW (obviously temp is a factor). I have no need for an EV, but if I lived in CA where gas is almost 3x what it costs me in OK and the State throws $1500 on the hood of this (to go with the $7500 Federal money), the Audi is the only one I'd buy today. That is $9,000 off and even through a 2-D monitor I can see a level of quality in the Audi that no Tesla will reach until around 2047. The updated 2021 Jag I-Pace is nice too; I'd have to drive that along with the Audi to make the final choice. Great review!
Mustang Mach-e is likely to be a better buy and has much better range. I would also add you should buy American, but Mach-e is made in Mexico I believe!
Once again, great video. I test drove the E-Tron Sportback the day it came to the dealership. Everything said in this video is true, and the criticism also holds. Hello Tom; being brief roughly 42 years ago I did have an electric car in my garage and it was not from "Fisher Price" it was from France, (via the US Electriccar Corporation) the Renault-5 Le Car - "Lectric Leopard" - just so you know (as if you don't already) nice car, if not a bit ridiculous to own
I disagree with your comment on charging speed, it is actually faster to charge than a Tesla because it manage to keep the 150 rate up to 80%, and even after that it is still quite fast (partly thanks to a battery buffer and of course excellent cooling tech). You can check Bjorn Nyland videos if you have any doubt.
@@bartwaggoner2000 Audi keeps a buffer because it fears owners might charge to 100% too often while Tesla leave you the choice. It might also be because they think their client base are no geeks. This doesn’t answer your question and I guess so far there’s limited data because the car has only been in the hand of consumers since 2019. Amusing to think than when it comes to EV, VW group is the newcomer with limited track record and Tesla almost the incumbent. Quite an achievement ! Still I have serious doubt that Tesla will reach Toyota/Lexus reliability levels, time will tell.
@@marcbungener1877 I am sure Audi is better screwed-together than Tesla (at almost 6K pounds weight I would hope so!), but EVs are already so much more reliable than ICE vehicles it may not matter much. I do know my friend's Audi Q7 was constantly in the shop, and he switched to Tesla. My diesel Porsche Cayenne was quite reliable, but the maintenance costs were astronomical!
From certain angles the e-tron Sportback resembles the Mustang Mach-E but, as you mentioned in your review, Audi is serious about quality of materials and assembly. Audi prices are squarely in the luxury realm and "my-oh-my" does it fit perfectly with that upscale neighborhood so beautifully caught on camera. Swing by my neighborhood when you review the Mitsubishi Mirage!
Another great '⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐' video. Your videos are always classy, informative, humorous, as well as being high quality - just like an Audi eTron. A neighbor of mine has an A6 and it the quality impresses me every time I see it. You know how some expensive cars look the part, while other expensive cars look cheap. (Hello GM?). I replayed the part when you opened the charge port door (1:14) a few times, as I was impressed with the detail of the design and operation of this small part of the car. Yet how could they not put a rear wiper on the back window? My 1982 Honda Accord hatchback even had one! Thanks Tom!
Very nice 👍 review.. just one thing that may confuse some people that don’t know better .. Note on the last red-light command in the video for better understanding.. Peak charging speed does not matter! when the charging curve is very poor .. The Audi eTron at 150kW charging speed charges FASTER THAN ALL Tesla from 0 to 80-100% on V3 Supercharger.. that is because the Audi etron has a flat charging curve up to 80% flat out @ 150kW making it faster than Tesla v3, Tesla v3 charging at 250kW drops off after only 23% then drops well below 150kW.. well before 80% making its overall charging rate slower than the eTron.. Charging curve matters more than just peak charging speed for a few minutes during charging .. so adding a faster charger with poor charging curve can end up being slower than a slower charger with a perfect charging curve... anyways..Soon I think we will need every manufacturer to report their average charging speed to 80% vs just possible peak charging speed ..
Thanks for the post. I did not go into details on charging, only the basics, that 80% takes a half hour, which is pretty good. But here's the thing, if I'm only at a charging station to get that 40 miles needed to get home, the Tesla and Porsche systems do it faster. That's been a common scenario for me, because EA and EVGo are expensive. Charging at home is MUCH cheaper. I've only charged to 80 percent simply to find out how quickly it happens for the reviews. I've had people stand and watch the Taycan charge and marvel at the speed down below 50%. People need to look at their usage and lifestyle.
@@DrivenCarReviews I see your point, however that edge case would need to be stated, adding 40miles on a V3 @ 250kW vs 150kW that small amount of range works out to 5min on a 250kW and 7min on a 150kW 2min difference is truly nothing major I would rather stay at the charger a few more min to have loads more range after getting home .. Tesla current 250kW charging curve is simply no match to the eTron at only 150kW overall .. yes the Taycan is the best however truly a different class base on price, and the Taycan does not have a flat curve to 80% it peaks at 270kW and stay in the curve longer than Tesla 250kW peak .. but still does not have a flat 270kW curve to 80% base on testing the Taycan and eTron still ends up at 80% close to the same time 5min difference.. This is why knowing charging curve and or average charging speed to a given percentage is so important .. not just peak speeds, point I am trying to make is Audi could have put in support for 250kW DC charging that could end up being slower than its current 150kW flat charging speed curve to 80% SoC, so it’s hard to say faster charging speeds are better without knowing the charging curve .. this is the key information most people don’t know having a higher charging peak rate does not really mean you are charging faster overall .. Note: I updated my first post .. it seem a bit strong and that was not the intention...
I'm really curious how these high-end electrics will hold up over time. The epic depreciation their combustion-powered siblings generate is due to maintenance and reliability issues, but a used e-tron shouldn't have those issues.
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 Come on! With a name like Bavarian car enthusiast, I know you do your homework 😃 That information was posted for those that don't know about the history of Audi. Tom Voelk touched on it at the end of the video.
@@adriancooper78 Yes I know "Horch" those are like the german Duesenbergs, but I never thought about the connection between this and Audi, not kidding :) So learned something new, thank you!
Still glad my EV (i3) has a range extender petrol engine. Despite its "meager" 120-mile electric range, we've only used 10 gallons of gas to cover 10,000 miles in 6months. Zero range anxiety with an ICE onboard! (GM was right about Voltec but marketed it poorly). Still too many public charger issues now to go full EV imho. YMMV.
Four rings - four brands Four interlocking rings symbolised the merger of four automobile manufacturers based in the German state of Saxony: Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer became Auto Union AG. Here are brief details of the roots of today's AUDI AG. The company Wanderer originated as a bicycle repair shop.
Also: Horch is the German imperative for listen. In 1909 August Horch lost a copyright case on that name. But the teenage son of a befriended family had Latin in school and came up with the idea of using the Latin imperative: Audi.
Very few people only own an EV, and those people live almost exclusively in major cities (stats from actual dealers). Most of the range anxiety concern comes from people not buying EV's anyways. Why would you need 500 miles to a charge since you charge it overnight. The average miles driven per day is 29.5, so say we even triple that to 90.5, and even in the worst of conditions you lose 40% range to say cold weather. You'd still only need a 150 mile range EV and a 200 mile range EV would give you some comfort, the rest is just auto makers overbuilding stuff so people "consider" actually buying the cars. My 2008 jeep grand cherokee has an average 240 miles of range with a 21 gallon fuel tank and roughly 12mpg, and I have never had range anxiety. On a full tank (like you'd have leaving your house with a fully charged ev), that 240 miles is roughly 4 hours of driving on a highway, which isn't a bad time for a break anyways. Now I know there are some very specific use cases where the extra range is needed, but for the most part its just people fearing what they don't understand.
To put the charging rate under the red light is hilarious. This is one of the best charging vehicles you can get. You get nearly 150kW as AVERAGE (from 10-80%). Try that with comparative cars. Don‘t trust „Maximum Charging Speed“ numbers. Charging should be mentioned under GREEN!
5,800lbs is over 1,000 more than a Tesla Model S and both vehicles have similar dimensions. That extra weight has to be taking a toll on range. It’s sharp looking inside and out, but that range is disappointing. Might be a good 2-3 year lease and then see where VW Group is at with efficiency and range. Glad to see Audi diversifying the e Tron offerings.
Yet again great automotive insight Tom, but honestly the constant interruptions from scrotum enhancement commercials were incredibly excruciating. I know it’s necessary for your channel to ads, but good lord it’s a painful 5 seconds.
Great review. Audi does not use its slogan “Vorsprung durch Technik” anymore and this is right. A car this expensive should have a much longer range and better charging technique. Germans and new technique does not go well together. Sure they can build good solid cars but don’t ask them to be the forerunner in the automobile industry because they simply ignore new trends.
A car I would never purchase myself. I am more of a wagon man. Limited options for a good wagon in North America. But nonetheless I love the commitment to a quality review!
Great video, I am yet to see the sportback E-tron. My friend has the standard E-tron (a 2019 model). Weirdly he has had issues with that rear bar light.
Today I learned -- re: Mercedes owning Audi But -- agreed, sport back , unless it was designed as such from day one (model y, the A7, mustang Mach e) just ain the look. Willing to see if you do a rivien review. Glad I found your channel and appreciate the "I am not gonna waste your time"
Bravo for your comment about Tesla being hard to work with! The company is just so full of itself, thinking it’s God’s gift to humankind. I can’t wait for makers like Audi to take them down a peg or ten. Nice review! Thanks!
That's complex. I like the e-tron interior and exterior execution. I like the choice of AWD and RWD plus the longer rage of the Mach-E. And of course the Ford's price.
Tom says that Android Auto and Apple Car Play are standard and wireless. Everything I read from Audi says Car Play is wireless but Android Auto is not and still needs to be plugged in. Can anyone confirm?
The only thing that keeps me from buying an electric car is range. I do a fair amount of day trips, for instance skiing, where I need at least a 350 mile range(in cold weather - and no I don't want to have to stop for 30 minutes to top up). 450-500 miles is what I want and I want to be able to charge at at least 100mile/5min. Let's face it my current car can give me 400+ miles in five minutes.
I was thumb's up number 110, Tomy! There's is definitely a "m'as-tu vu?" part in the price tag of this car... Pretty good Wagen, though... I totally agree when it comes to "one physical button=one function". Screens have their limits... Very much so! So, you keep the red Sshirt of your Evil twin ONLY for your the days you shoot or you have several? Please tell us! I knew Audi was called Auto Union before being called Audi. Never knew Mercedes did own it!!! Thanks for your great work. As always... Pat. "There will be more changes in the automotive industry in this decade than there has been in the last 100 years".
the "only" 150kW charging power is rather misleading. It has one of the best charging curves out there, even compared to Tesla. Indeed, Teslabjorn covered 1000km in about the same time as a model X raven, despite having a shorter range
I'm going to cut and paste my reply to J Vincent here- Some detail (that is hard to present in a video clearly) that may benefit others- I wasn't able to charge the e-tron using 150kW from a low charge state (I used Level 2) but Audi claims a 0-80% fill takes 30 minutes with 150kW (obviously temp is a factor). I think Tom was minimizing the need for higher range or charging infrastructure a bit. A lot of people can't charge at home, whether because they live in apartments or because they have street parking. EVs are still toys for wealthy people until the charging infrastructure is built out.
I love Audi interiors and ride quality. Had a Q7. The only thing I don’t like is the wood trim interiors...on any car! Just dumb IMHO. Wish it had more range. Need an EV to take long trips about once a month...I’ll stick with my Tesla LR AWD Model 3 for now...I like the traditional e-tron roofline better. More room and less money!!
That spare tire looks really weird...it looked like there was nearly zero side wall, and square, flat, tread face. I don't know if that was just the camera.
Great review, awesome production quality as usual. The eTron seems lacking in range but it would be good enough for someone who has access to another ICE/hybrid car for longer rides thus using it for shores, errands. I am considering it (I work from home and only use my car to go the gym, my wife has a pick up car that we use for longer trips), but likely I will wait to see what the Q4 eTron will look like: a luxury id4 with more range for sure to use than the regular eTron but if it doesn't have that refinement that the regular eTron has (THAT suspension for example, I test-drove it and it was like a cloud), then I'll pick and eTron sportsback. Ps: what kind of software you use to edit your videos??
I cut part of the video that showed us traveling to Langley, WA and it's 90 miles away. We did it with no issue so moderate trips and very possible. I use Final Cut Pro.
Yes, there are others but they are not you. Maybe Tesla is afraid of your no nonsense approach. Everyone is talking about the acceleration and uneven seams. You talk practical stuff. If one of my body panels has a 2mm gap and the other a 3 mm gap, it will not make the ride smoother, the car handle better or the battery life 10% less. Yes if I walk around the car for 10 min and examine EVERYTHING, it could be annoying but short of a few of us OCD folk, I don’t see many of my Neighbors eyeing their car in the driveway for 30 min. ;-). Keep it real! Looking forward to next video.
Yup. The four companies were Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer. There's some chatter that Audi is an acronym for Auto Union Deutsch Industries but pretty sure that's not true.
I've owned 5 Audis. Starting with the 90 thru A4s and an A2. Excellent cars, but with the A series someone in Audi land figured they could increase prices and sell even more by suckering people to think they have better thanMercedes or BMW. Thankfully electric cars need little servicing otherwise with that nice cup of 'free' expresso, the repair invoice is like buying another car!! Check out the profit of Audi division.. I will stay away, thank you.
I love mine. I only wish the range was in the 300 miles and for god's sake those cupholders are complete joke! And yes, the charging station network is about 2-3 yrs behind and very much pain in the ass.
Tom, we have to get you into a Model Y performance. E-tron weighs 50% more with half the bhp and 2/3 the range. I would pay a fair amount of money to see your hair on fire launching a Tesla around Seattle.
I've been in one and there's some cool things about it. I'll point out it's around 4,400 pounds to the 5,760 for the larger e-tron. And from what I can glean, the real-world range seems to be closer to 240 miles to the average of 200 I saw with the Audi. Just trying to keep it real here.
Audi makes an incredible SUV I have to agree with you. I had a Q5 and I loved it. Just would like to see you review that other Ev whose name we won’t mention. Nobody reviews a vehicle like you.
Just can't get past the price of this. I'll let the rich- or those pretending to be rich - pay the early adopter tax. Once we're through covid and road trips are a thing again, this would seem like the wrong vehicle for that.

But will the battery last as long? Tesla aims for 10+ year battery life, and charge/discharge rate greatly affects this.

Thanks Tom!
Pretty sure it's a design thing. It would look clunky hanging on the end.
This is why knowing charging curve and or average charging speed to a given percentage is so important .. not just peak speeds, point I am trying to make is Audi could have put in support for 250kW DC charging that could end up being slower than its current 150kW flat charging speed curve to 80% SoC,
so it’s hard to say faster charging speeds are better without knowing the charging curve .. this is the key information most people don’t know having a higher charging peak rate does not really mean you are charging faster overall ..
Note: I updated my first post .. it seem a bit strong and that was not the intention...
I'm really curious how these high-end electrics will hold up over time. The epic depreciation their combustion-powered siblings generate is due to maintenance and reliability issues, but a used e-tron shouldn't have those issues.
I assume their computers, screens and electronics will cost a fortune to replace. Germans way-over-engineer their cars.
Audi is the Latin translation of horch, from the German verb "horchen", which means "listen!" (compare English "hark").
Yes that's right - never thought about it, thank you!

Come on! With a name like Bavarian car enthusiast, I know you do your homework 😃
That information was posted for those that don't know about the history of Audi. Tom Voelk touched on it at the end of the video.

Nice Review 🍀👍🙏😋
Tom, I could watch you review wheelbarrows. Keep up the good work!
Don't give me any ideas....
YMMV.
Four rings - four brands
Four interlocking rings symbolised the merger of four automobile manufacturers based in the German state of Saxony: Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer became Auto Union AG.

Yes, I know!! Didn't know the part about his son though. Nice!!!😃👍🏻😎
Beautiful vehicle. Thanks for the content.
Hello Tom, love your reviews, any test on the EQC? Thank you 👏🏻👏🏻
great review as usual
I love your reviews and almost all other youtube car reviewers need to take lessons, ie. less them more car
I’m curious if there’s a difference in rear and side visibility between the sport back and standard roof models.
Me too. I'm guessing the standard roof is a bit better.
Heyyyyy!!!! Evil Twin is Back!!!! Welcome back Tom's TWIN!!!
Good review... I think the regular e-tron looks better, though.
150 kw charging is actually pretty good but the 218 mi range is definitely on the lower side.
Great Review Tom. Audi sales will be limited on this and the regular E-tron primarily due to range and charging speed
218 mile range is absolutely unacceptable today, especially at the price of this vehicle!
Today I learned -- re: Mercedes owning Audi
But -- agreed, sport back , unless it was designed as such from day one (model y, the A7, mustang Mach e) just ain the look.
Willing to see if you do a rivien review. Glad I found your channel and appreciate the "I am not gonna waste your time"
I am just waiting for the q4 etron, and for them to make an electric s5 and s7
awesome video
Bravo for your comment about Tesla being hard to work with! The company is just so full of itself, thinking it’s God’s gift to humankind. I can’t wait for makers like Audi to take them down a peg or ten. Nice review! Thanks!
Hey Tom, regardless of price which would you recommend to someone? Mach-E or e-tron?
That's complex. I like the e-tron interior and exterior execution. I like the choice of AWD and RWD plus the longer rage of the Mach-E. And of course the Ford's price.
Tom says that Android Auto and Apple Car Play are standard and wireless. Everything I read from Audi says Car Play is wireless but Android Auto is not and still needs to be plugged in. Can anyone confirm?
Note taken 😉
Thanks Pat. I believe ET has a closet of red shirts, much like Steve Jobs black turtleneck.
@@DrivenCarReviews Does ET come from Outer Space? Sometimes, I wonder... ;-)
It’s a real shame that the prismatic cells and motors used just Are not that efficient compared to another brand starting with a T
the "only" 150kW charging power is rather misleading. It has one of the best charging curves out there, even compared to Tesla. Indeed, Teslabjorn covered 1000km in about the same time as a model X raven, despite having a shorter range
I'm going to cut and paste my reply to J Vincent here-
Some detail (that is hard to present in a video clearly) that may benefit others- I wasn't able to charge the e-tron using 150kW from a low charge state (I used Level 2) but Audi claims a 0-80% fill takes 30 minutes with 150kW (obviously temp is a factor). Be well!
Looks like a large sedan. Then you stood next to it. 😂 I am digging that electric cars don't look so weird sometimes, well done Audi.
I think Tom was minimizing the need for higher range or charging infrastructure a bit. A lot of people can't charge at home, whether because they live in apartments or because they have street parking. EVs are still toys for wealthy people until the charging infrastructure is built out.
I'm of the firm belief that EVs are best for people that can charge at home and that's the way I approach them.
1.9 m/kWh would be more like 160-170 miles?
We are waiting for 2021 audio q5..Tom
PHEV version is scheduled in a month or two
Even if you did not like the car( I don’t ).....the photography and content is worth coming for...3 tons is a lot of beef for a sedan..oy!
It's a space saver design that inflates
@@DrivenCarReviews...huh...that's pretty cool. Didn't know that was a thing in the market. Thank you.
A comparable Tesla doesn't have much more real life range, they are in bed with EPA.
The whole point of an Audi is road tripping - a shame to waste it on commuting
@@bartwaggoner2000 The point of an Audi is great design and luxury which works equally well for commuting, errands and road tripping I would think.
Nice looking Audi EV but priced too high and range is short
Why people talked so bad about this car is so beautiful? I prefer an Audi than a Tesla
"Audi has everything. Except maybe that what matters most."
This thing weighs as much as my 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser.
$80k for this. No wonder they sit on dealer lots for months and months. Beautiful design, but $30k more than Q5. Range is terrible.
Hey Tom. You make great videos. And you know what, that is Tesla’s loss. Cheers!
Tesla could care less. And there are plenty of others doing Tesla videos.
@@DrivenCarReviews Now, but give them a few years when they are just another electric car, you just may get a phone call.
Almost all DC fast chargers tops at 50kW so 150kWh rate really doesn't matter!
I'm seeing a lot of 150kW units these days.
Range is relative. No need for 500 km EV if you don t drive more than 200 km daily.
Great review. Car is Ho-Hum.
And the four car makers that pre-dated "Audi" was called Auto-Union, no?
Yup. The four companies were Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer. There's some chatter that Audi is an acronym for Auto Union Deutsch Industries but pretty sure that's not true.
@@DrivenCarReviews I'll agree, I can't imagine them calling themselves 'German' or 'Industrie'. Doesn't sound good in German.
Cupholders are good for bottles, but not for open cups.. open cups would never be allowed in any of my cars anyways..
I love my 55
So you are the reason we have had a toilet paper shortage
375 range minimum- that means about 325 in the real world
Thumbs up for Tom, not the blah sterile car that manages to convert everything into the most mundane aspect of life.
218 miles per charge!
That's what they claim but what about the real world? Millage claim seems to be somewhat of a joke.
I had one session at 40-45 degrees that saw 190 miles or so estimated and another where I saw closer to 210 with temps in the mid 50s.
Boost mode, nice👍🏾 Black plastic, not so much considering the price
Just can't get past the price of this. I'll let the rich- or those pretending to be rich - pay the early adopter tax. Once we're through covid and road trips are a thing again, this would seem like the wrong vehicle for that.
I'm thinking these will be a great deal off-lease.
