To be fair to Taran, cutting down your footage first rather than rushing to completion is a good editing habit to have when working on a major production. If a director orders a change, you don't want to delete completed work.
Its representative of how LTT works differently than Justine. She's the one taking decisions, so she doesn't have to worry about last minute changes. A lot of what both of them did was representative of how both of the compagnies does thing differently.
That boomer who gave my man a 5 was clearly biased (typical iSheep behaviour, but Justine ofcourse is waaay better than that), they should've given out the scores without knowing the editor
Raw footage from people like Justine who are comfortable in front of the cameras would be more polished even before editing. Hence why the she got a challenge editing this particular raw footage she was given.
Taran's edit was probably more "the engineer" and Justine's edit was probably more "the entertainer". Depends on the crowd, LTT viewers come for the details and specificity, Taran is here to deliver. Can't really comment on Justine's viewers though, I'm not one of them.
I'm pretty sure Austin's crowd watches for detail and specificity, so I think Taran nailed it. Its an informative video, It should let the viewer know of all the features of the device.
I loved the way Taran expressed his thought on Justine's work. Great thing to acknowledge opponents talents, he has exhibited a great sportmanship......👍❤️
I feel like their editing compliments their character a lot. Justine edits her own videos, so her editing style goes hand in hand with the host's humor. While Taran's editing style is on a higher scale level, working for a company that has several dozen employees. It also has to do with their audience, Justine has a more mainstream-based audience, with Apple products being a more mainstream theme than the "tech taken to the next level" kind of energy that Linus Tech Tips has. So I can definetly see how Justine's video would be easier to watch without getting bored, while Taran's video is slightly more centered on the product that Austin is reviewing. Both videos were great though and kudos to both editors.
Judge: Your video has too many zooms and therefore people would click away. Him not knowing Taran also edited this video and so far no-one has clicked away.
I just finished watching a Corridor video before this so it took me a bit to realize that he was out of place lol. I was just like, "Yeah, Niko, of course."
Yeah I mean I think this video showcased their styles and workflows pretty well. Taran comes at it from a content-creation and artistic angle, and he's very aware of the technicalities of the video, so he tends to put a ton of polish on things and make sure the bare minimum looks as nice as possible, even if he doesn't put as much on top of it. Justine tends to come at it from a content-consumption angle, making sure the video is as engaging as possible first and polishing the flow last.
as a music producer and DJ I would LOVE to see a similar video with music production and/or DJ software. everyone gets so defensive about what they use but like it was said in the video, "a bad carpinter blames his tools"
Well, sounds like it ended up being a directorial competition rather than which setup is best for editing. They were judged on creative skills, not the effectiveness of the tool. So I'll give the judges a 2 out of 10 :)
I noticed that as well. But ultimately, it really comes down to communicating the message making the talent look good. I use Sony Vegas for editing. Just comparing what it does with what I see them doing with the software they are using, the basics of what the tools do are pretty much the same. The additional features are different and there may be some shortcuts that make one better than the others, but I think I could use any of the three and come out with pretty much the same video without pulling my hair out.
as a video editor i totally understood that. let me explain: i can watch one of my edits 10 times over and make it more seamless, getting "technically" better each time but if i'm not inspirred and in the mood, i can make a technically perfect video that seems soulless and boring. on the other hand some days i get footage that i love editing and have that spark of creativity which results in an engaging high quality final video, but i'm so over excited i miss technical problems like uneven horizon or inconsistent audio levels or jerky camera motion etc.
@@KaelDenna eh, i don't really get it. As somone who's been editing videos and studying the art of production for years at this point, i genuinely do not understand how they came to that conclusion.
I think Justine was exaggerating. While she might not have a script, she probably makes notes on what to talk about. Since she's a one woman band, that's ok! Whereas at LMG, it's really important to have a script, if there is no script, there is no video. 🙂
Locutus I think many people forget that LTT is practically its own media company at this point, with each employee having his own role. The person writing the script isn’t the same person reading off it in front of the camera, which in turn makes a detailed script all the more crucial. Being a one-woman army, iJustine likely has her own notes on what to say in her videos, but she can afford to wing it more compared to LTT.
I really appreciate Taran's humbleness, and at the same time, Justine is praising Taran for his work. It's fair that Justine won, and we didn't get to see but snippets, but Taran did a fantastic job too. Congrats to both of you for you work and your being humble. Great guys/girls!

I have a huge amount of respect for Taran being as humble as he was. It takes a very strong person to be able to critically self evaluate like he did- especially in-front of the judges and everyone.
Justine's editing feels like editing for a 14 year old to watch. Taran's editing looks like something an 18-year old would watch. It's a product of their style. Justine edits more variety content while Taran edits tech content. Of course variety content is going to be more geared toward a younger and more diverse audience while tech content will be geared toward a primarily male and older audience.
@@andrewb378 Let me guess, you're 18? That's also a hilarious gap - as if someone is 18 years old then they're so much more mature than they were 4 years ago.
@@MrKamillordo it's not a matter of maturity it's a matter of focus. If you're 18 watching a tech video you're going to be paying attention whether there's fancy graphics or not. If you're 14 watching a lifestyle video, you probably won't be paying as much attention so the video needs to be flashier with more/faster cuts, graphics, more up tempo music, jokes, etc. The age gap itself isn't that big because people building their first PC where they'd be watching tech videos probably aren't going to be older than about 25. People watching Justine's videos probably won't be more than 15 or 16. People who watch RUclips consistently probably aren't much older than 30 and I think even that's a stretch.
As an ordinary viewer, getting an inside look into the process of making a RUclips video is my main takeaway from this video. It's really fascinating how much time and effort goes into them, this has left me with a new sense of appreciation for creators.
Because if anyone saw both of the videos uninterrupted side by side again and again they would be thinking the same thing. The point of an editor 99% of the time is to make unobtrusive editing decisions.
Justine edits as if it's her own video where it fits more to show her "personality in the edit", but Austin Evans is completely different. I actually would enjoy watching iJustine but her editing is just unbearable to me, especially the music.

This was really well done. I love the contrasts in styles where he is so hyper focused and serious because thats his job. Justine on the other hand before the last bit was using editing to relax, and just chill. He had like 5 things and help directly from Austin while she just ate snacks and just used what was on her system. The styles of editing shows well and really visualize each person perfectly. Justine also proved why she does do her own editing while being an OG on this platform. To me this was less about the operating system or suites used and more about that. I do wish they showed more about both programs cuz some ppl never used a mac or a pc. Fun video as always from LTT, almost as fun as this segway, to the other comments. Lol
This is a really good point, without discussing the purpose of the videos, it's hard to rank them. Which one was more entertaining is what was graded by the judges, I wonder if the question was different. "Which one is a better review?" Interesting comment.
I came to this conclusion myself when they mentioned “This is meant for RUclips” and I bet a lot of iJustine’s advantage came from points docked over that
They were editing the same videos, so I doubt one of them had a drastic information/education difference than the other. It's not like they were editing out huge chunks of the actual information, just the parts that were repetitive or irrelevant. I doubt either video showcased significantly more of the product than the other, so what it really comes down to is how you can make the same information more interesting.
IMO, several advantages in iJustine corner since before starting. If the data we have is right. She has edited more videos, or so they said ( she has edited a crazy ton, I just don't know how many has he edited, specially before getting into LTT). This is in most graphic content making a solid advantage, you learn a lot with practice, even if the genius vein of Taran or whoever will surely lead him far. Seeing the amount of video edited by justine, the "shark" adjective is not casual. Also, she is both the editor and the content creator, the actor and director of the scenes. Has actual TV acting experience. Also experience on interacting with the community, comments, etc, and tracking that tightly during years. A mountain of experience to know what works better with a very specific audience, how to enhance a take, etc. The experience is also due to age, Taran is younger, and with exceptions, more years in some duties is a lot more tricks and that. Surely if you take Justine at Taran's moment, years ago, she would have lost against him, the guy has good potential. Also, IMO, editing YT videos, anyway, is extremely far from deep FX editing, and all the handling, 3D stuff, etc. Even in pure video editing, these tasks are pretty basic. So, not sure if the test serves to consider stuff at certain deeper level. I... don't feel the "5" qualification was fair, tho... casually, it was from the mac based guy, hehe. :D But in al honesty, his advice did seem very good, although I have not seen the footage and the edited videos. I can understand if mac pro users feel intimidated by today's PC's capabilities in pro fields. Not entrance, it's many years established. I've always seen instances of those pros fearing or complaining of increased competition. But hey, life is so. My only fear is... if aaaall this was scripted. Kindda rigged ? As... the cocky pose of Taran at the beginning... Dunno if he's Canadian or US (and anyway, stereotypes are rubbish) but... kindda sth was off to me, there. It kindda doesn't match the personality I'm guessing in this tall guy. So... it very well could be, not that the entire thing was rigged ( I dunno) or the judges decision (either can't know), but is more possible that the cocky comments were totally scripted, on purpose, to make it interesting, or pursuit an agenda Mac/Pc (in order to favor Mac), or just to give it some extra bait (to "heat" the match). In any case, VERY interesting video. For us more techy people in the side of graphic content creation (my main work tho I like hardware in general). And one way or the other, hats off to Justine. She's very talented. It'd be completely expected to win, if all we know is true, and this was all, well, real. Nah, doesn't seem like a fake. I still don't buy the Taran's cocky attitude. I believe that's what I'm almost sure it's scripted, to give it a bit of emotion.
Lucas Leite they shoot in like 8k raw at LTT on those red cams so they have the pixels to do the comedic zooming. He’s not going to stop just like that after one hater, how else can they justify those 30k cameras and 1000000TB media servers to Linus
@@minartson And they knew their conclusion. "It doesn't matter". To get a true Apples to Apples comparison, you'd need to have someone fluent in both programs, be given the same time, and given the same video to render with the same about style. The face we had the variables of Windows, Asus, MacBook, MacOS, Justine and Taran, the competition was "Justine vs Taran". Because there's no way to validate which is better with such variables.
@@Xyler94 exactly right. if we'd wanted to compare like-for-like, they could've both used premiere, but this wasn't about benchmarking the tech, this was about comparing the styles & approaches of two editors who happen to use these different toolsets. back in the linear edit days, I would get runners & tape-ops asking me to show them how to edit. I'd tell them to hook a 9-way remote cable between two decks & find some footage to play with. "no," they'd say, "show me how to use *that*" & point at the GVG edit controller in one of the suites. I'd tell them "I can show you how to edit, or I can show you how to work the edit controller- which do you want me to do?" editing is part of story telling. the script & the storyboard (if there is one) are where you start. if you don't know what the story is, you're wasting your time, whatever the hardware is.
@@minartson to be fair though, the title & description here do hint heavily at an 'ecosystem' comparison with the added bonus clickbait of 'mac vs PC', & that simply never happened except for a fleeting mention of the different handling of the LUT. so yeah, that got lost somewhere.

Tarans editing style is a lot better because for me it's just not as distracting as Justines with all the effects.

The excessive transition effects when Justine was talking about getting her new transitions had me dying.
They had me dying when watching the final video too. Really bright and eye piercing.
I give the judges a 0.3457 becuase i think that doing it right is more important than doing it wrong in a better way. Right?

Whereas at LMG, it's really important to have a script, if there is no script, there is no video. 🙂
Locutus I think many people forget that LTT is practically its own media company at this point, with each employee having his own role. The person writing the script isn’t the same person reading off it in front of the camera, which in turn makes a detailed script all the more crucial. Being a one-woman army, iJustine likely has her own notes on what to say in her videos, but she can afford to wing it more compared to LTT.

I must agree with you
Justine's editing feels like editing for a 14 year old to watch.

Because if anyone saw both of the videos uninterrupted side by side again and again they would be thinking the same thing. The point of an editor 99% of the time is to make unobtrusive editing decisions.

The Earth felt that. 😂
Taran is an educationally oriented editor while iJustine leans towards entertainment.
And editors and camera people are the only ones that are actually good in LTT as well.

I'd tell them "I can show you how to edit, or I can show you how to work the edit controller- which do you want me to do?"

I can't believe how much I've enjoyed watching this video!!!!! 23 minutes smiling ear to ear, and the other 2 laughing out loud!!! LOVED IT!!!
