I know I'm way late to the band wagon on this game; only having started in April. I played one run through as a paragon soldier colonist and i did ok. i had a high war score and went 'red ending' but I didn't get '"THE" ending. So I decided to replay the game but this time on insanity because I like pain (ME2 being an actual ring of hell in its own existence) I went Paragon Earthborn Vanguard and I spent over a hundred hours through all three games and i discovered things and scenes in my insanity play through that i missed in my first play through. This scene being one of many. My play style was pure abject chaos, bouncing from one target to the next across the entire field of battle and continually slamming my face into Mechs, brutes, banshees and everything else in between because that's what kept my shields up and kept me alive and kept me fighting. So stumbling upon this scene, having no prior knowledge of it, I was happily surprised and in awe of this game all over again. I became so invested in my insanity play through character that i felt closer to my Shepard and all of the companions because the fights are so much harder. So seeing and hearing Liara call me a 'Powerful Biotic who was nearly unstoppable when i charged into a fight' was so heart warming, so gratifying, so rewarding that i realized i loved this game all over again. I finished the play through and i got over 8,000 war score and i got "THE" ending and in my head My Shepard went to build that damn house on Rannoch. For any new or veteran players i highly recommend romancing Liara in the first game even if you dont in the other two. Her scenes and interactions with Shepard are soooo much more loving, heart warming and heart breaking if you do so. I will forever love this game. even from a two second log dialogue that can easily be missed or changed.
I keep discovering new lines in every new run, new alternate scenes depending of my choices. For example I had one goal in my newest run: having Mordin not loyal in ME3, I worked hard to keep him alive in ME2, there were different dialogues regarding the genophage and Maelon's cure and I loved the fact you could have Wrex not angry about you but still have the data destroyed which offers a few different dialogues between Shepard and Wrex. Now I discovered that balanced morality line with Liara when you're basically neutral (eventhough it doesn't exist in ME3) and it's those moments that motivate me replaying it over and over again So you're not alone in this regardless of when you started playing it for the first time, the trilogy is a journey that can last for a lot of hours!
In the first game, I spoked to Liara and she asked me if I liked her back. I turned her down because she looks so ehh. So I banged Ashley. In the 2nd game, I banged Miranda lol. In the 3rd game, I didnt like how Ashley was treating me in the previous game and the 2nd attractive female in my squad was Liara so I gave her a shot. During this scene, I felt like I made the right choice.
They did a line for every different class? They did this while a lot of the rest of the game feels so unfinished. I wonder what ME3 would have been if they worked on it for a year or 2 more
Honestly my first play through I did vanguard...and infiltrator female for the second and now I'm doing Male Earthborn Sole Survivor soldier (or in my personal case Marine (Infantryman) lol for my third playthrough. To be honest that made me feel good, I am academically gifted, but I really was proud to be in the infantry...when she said he was an expert at any weapon system and the deadliest soldier this Galaxy had to offer. It made me really fill up with pride. I have a nice career now and the legendary edition was my first playthrough while over a decade ago in the barracks I watched all my brothers playing this game and never thought to give it a shot. For me the Soldier/Marine Earthborn and balanced reputation really spoke to me. I don't have Biotic powers, I am not an engineer though I like science but hate math...(but I can do them I just don't like to), but I do know how lead by example, I don't miss often, and while other MOS's (mil. Jobs) make fun of the Army and Marine Infantry thinking we're all too dumb to do anything else......believe it or not we are proud to be infantry because the majority (contrary to popular belief)....actually volunteered for the Infantry. Colonist Survivor Vanguard with balanced morality, determined to not only survive, but save too. Fuck the Paragon and Renegades, balanced heroes are the most enjoyable. Never enjoyed playing Shepard that much.
Such a powerful scene but sadly it doesn't reach its full potential. Here's my take. Give the prompt to invite Liara up after Citadel coup and before Thessia. Gives her just enough urgency to meet with Shepard. Liara explains the project. Shepard gives his opinion. If Liara is your love interest, then she expresses her concerns about the future of their relationship. Citadel attack has shaken her. You can reassure her that you're in this together no matter what. Liara is relieved. They sit on the couch, Liara leans against Shepard's shoulder, he plants a kiss on her forehead. A much better way to lock-in romance than that awkward presidium conversation. Conversely, you can tell her that it isn't working anymore. Liara is devastated. She barely holds back her tears and returns to her cabin, leaving an equally gutted Shepard alone. You're free to pursue another. If Liara isn't your LI, then the scene plays out normally.
