Buying a Car Doesn't Have to Suck™ - Авто/Мото
Says GOING to auctions to preview cars is old school and out of touch, then goes on to explain why previewing the car in person is STILL a great idea.
He's the king of contradiction.
Worked for carvana (sarcasm)
was thinking the same thing
It's like buying a car unseen from a dealer outside your local community. I've been bitten too many times by that. Never again for me.
Done this for over forty years, amazing how you get what is coming for being lazy,c'mon DUDE GO LOOK FIRST, or be a big boy and take what your given. Learned a long time ago to depend on no one just saying.
Either go to the auctions yourself or find a buyer to do it for you! Today buying the right cars is a full-time job!
100% agree. I bought cars online for almost 12 months in 2021-2022. I decided to start going to auctions in person because the quality of the cars was not accurately described by the CR reports. Since going to auctions physically over the past 5-6 months, my average repair/recon expense per vehicle has dropped almost 70%. It is more time consuming but the quality of vehicles I am able to purchase because I can evaluate in person has drastically improved, in turn, improving our monthly sales volume. Take the time and go in person, it will not take long to see the fruits of your labor.
No kidding... Bidding on anything of value requires inspection
But that is going to increase his cost increasing to cost to the buyer. I don’t think that is the model he is going for.
@@MrMalort you don't save pennies to waste dollars... buyers have to have practice due diligence in making purchases.
@@MrMalort absolutely incorrect. The $100-$200 he pays to a buyer that can physically inspect the vehicle before purchasing will save him $500-$1000 if not more. Respectfully, having a sales person and office staff to handle day to day transactions, he has no excuse to not go himself. Online is easier and convenient, in person will save/make him more money in the long run.
A used car dealer is surprised another used car dealer (auction) is shady. The reputation of this industry is horrible. Just because you are trying to do a better job in the industry, doesn't mean everyone else is suddenly operating on the up and up.
It's not the auctions responsibility that the buyer checks cars cosmetically. Green light means they are good mechanically. This is why it's important to go to the auction and check the cars yourself.
I’d never buy a car without looking at it first. It blows my mind that people will buy from EBay sight unseen.
Lazy people will then complain about it on You Tube!!
Same here ,i dont know how people do it,and they buy expensive cars no less,I wouldnt buy a $5k car unless i physically seen it,drove it,and looked it over
A lot of people, don't understand that if a dealership, rental company, or private shop or citizen repairs a vehicle on their own, out of their own pocket, that repair will NEVER show up on any CarFax / VIN repair reporting organization, it just goes to show you can't trust a clean Carfax without inspecting the car, when you clearly notice things being off about a car, like Mike clearly pointed out on this Mazda.
As a former insurance adjuster, geico, most insurance companies don't report to carfax. Now for body shops that is hit and miss. A lot of the dealer ones do but good luck getting a straight answer from large chains like caliber, service king, etc.
Wrong. My friend ordered a taillight for his 2016 Caddy from dealer and it should up on carfax.
@@wileecoyote5749 from a dealer. if they ordered it off a place like Ebay it wouldn't show up at all, there are other methods to get parts other than a dealership. a U pull yard is another.
Ok, the word of the day is now "Flabbergasted". You only lost $500 but that may have been money well spent to avoid this particular auction company for the future!
Mike may be also to write off the loss on his business taxes also, but that's for the accountants and tax advisers to confirm.
now the car goes to another Flabbergasted dealer
Condition reports are bogus at all auctions. Start going to live auction as soon as possible. Buying online is one of the worst things you can do.
Bingo. I own a dealership close by this guy. We have been very successful for over a decade. I have nothing against him, but he is clearly more a car salesman than a dealership owner. It irks me how he states things as fact that are simply untrue in this industry I love.
As someone that installs window film and PPF, don’t fall for the bs certificate or being certified. That’s not a thing as there is no standard or accreditation process.
I was thinking chicago 3 minutes into video
The car business is shady, proceed with caution and trust no one.
Mike most Dealers. Including me. Still gotta check the cars out in person. Especially at manhiem. Or you will get burned.
I know doing the auction online is a thing today. BUT there's just no substitute for seeing a car in person. I don't how many cars I've looked at online and then went to see in person. They NEVER look as good in person. They either do b t take a photo of everything or the imperfections don't show up in the photos.
Lets go back to the days of exposing and holding companies accountable. Blast the company name, let the internet army do what we do best.
Why not expose the name of the Auction Company.
Don't wanna hear about NEW AGE in buying cars. Used to have one rule, don't go look at a car to buy in the rain. If your not looking at the vehicle yourself in person you are absolutely doing it WRONG and have nobody to blame but yourself. BTW, 40yrs experience here
Mike, I can only remark that I am NOT a dealer or a buyer from an auction facility BUT Manheim Cincinnati is in my back yard. I use to work for the original owner and just as an observer would NEVER buy from a car auction without hands on. I now, old school but i've seen the trickery in selling these auction cars.
My boy Mike lazy af or cheap gotta have someone driving/checking them at auction,
Just checking in, hoping everything is ok with you. I have not seen a video in almost a month so just a little worried. Hope all is well and you are selling tons of cars!
The sad thing is someone is going to put that car on a lot and try to get full value for it ,and someone is going to spend a lot more money than they need to.
That’s how dealers pay their mortgage
@@nkyryryyou mean for their yacht 🛳️
Maybe it will end up back in Chicago and someone will get "street cred" for purchasing a car with a bullet hole in it!
If he only lost 500 dollar sold it back at the auction, I don't think they disclosed those damages Again. Probably ended up at another FLABERGASTED dealer smh
You really have to do the inspection on these cars in person. I've purchased a vehicle at auction about a year ago without going in person and i will not do that again. The vehicle was in worse shape than what pictures showed. At the end of the day the responsibilities fall on the buyer.
This is a good example of why a dealer is entitled to a reasonable profit. Dealers get ripped off just the same as people do.
23yrs in the business and your ahead of the curve. You might want to go back to that last intersection and pick up a few more things before going any further down that road. You should have learned this stuff your first couple years in the industry. Heck I could have told you, you can't trust those auction houses back in 1995 when I stopped playing with them. I'm happy to be on this side of that curve, with my money still in my pocket. Chalk it up to education.
Sorry this happened to you Mike. Keep the pressure on them and hopefully this headache will get resolved…
That Mazda has obviously been in a low velocity wreck.
I was a whole used car buyer for a dealership in 21 and 22 and I solely did in person inspections before making offers. You gotta be in the car right to try to make money on it but also, if there are parts back orders that costs you money to try to repair because now it’s depreciating while you’re trying to figure out what to do. The most money you’ll make on a vehicle is in the first two weeks after getting it, so you need to recon ASAP. The more to fix, the more you put yourself at the mercy of the parts market.
Time to put the company on blast. 😂😂😂
That vehicle has more than bullet hole problems. Stay with auction houses you already deal with or go to the auctions to check the conditions before you blindly purchase a vehicle.
Awesome thanks for the show.
Mike, did you not research this auction house before doing business with them? I feel bad you are put into this situation, but a lot of times this can be avoided by simply researching on the internet for a few minutes. Hope all is well
While I am sympathetic, no, Mike, you need to unfortunately send someone to look at it in person as in the days of "online everything" what you see online is no different than the junk you see on Craigslist or similar. Doctored photos, things ommited, and so on. Every single listing it seems.
Its hard when you can't inspect the vehicles in person. I have bought several auction cars online and I always study the photos not that it will show everything. But ray Charles could see the hood/bumper gap in the photos. And that would have told me somethings up.
When I was an estimator at a body shop, I had a $2,800 headlight on a Silverado. The insurance company tried to get the customer to take a $100 appearance allowance on it since it was totally esthetic. I thought how chintzy. Fortunately the customer didn’t bite.
That was a gangsta ride
Fo' shizzle in Chiraq.
It has been said numerous times "always check out a vehicle in person prior to purchase"
Chevy dude .
Just a tip , you probably know this already .
But some Mazdas have headlight dryers at the back at the part where you unscrew the bulbs .
This car probably sat in the weather for long and the headlight dryers are filled with water .
Really a great approach on arbitrating an issue or issues!
I had a Manheim Arbitration Rep tell me a Condition Report is just for cosmetics.......NOT for mechanical. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I restored a car in 2006 that was bought with auction with two quarts of blood in the back. It took me 10 hours to gut the car and 50 hours to put everything back together. , the car was bleech, all new interior, owner was able sell car for a 2000.00 profit. So I know how to professional clean a dead man car.
I bought a 2 year old Miata that the previous owner killed himself with a shotgun in. Replaced the top (he did it with the top up) and the entire interior. Had to replace it because of the dead body smell.
@@aaronbritt2025asty, but at least you saved the car! I always assumed (for some reason) those cars were destroyed as evidence etc
Reminds me of a camry that was brought in to my old job. We counted 23 rounds at least 3 different caliber weapons. The amount of blood soaked into the seats and carpet, someone died. Used car dealer had us replace the seat covers and a body shop do the work.
Everyone on the internet: Go in person to inspect the cars you're interested in buying.
If you have to buy one sight unseen expect the worst and accept the risk.
You: Going in person is not cool, it's old fashioned, you're out of the loop if you do it...
You must've been lucky because you buy the cars at dealer only auctions.
Anyone can learn pretty fast that going to the auction is a must if you don't want nasty surprises, and if you can't go yourself the auctio s tend to offer someone that inspects the car for you for about $100 a piece.
Auctions aren't fun if you win all the time lol
Lol
Yeah I'll pass on your logic
For me I wish he would go back to doing what he was great at, getting customers the best Corvette possible for there money! That’s when I became a fan!!!
0:51 if you're doing that you're avoiding these headaches.
the Warren Commission (JFK) has determined it was a lone shooter.
I feel like I’m hearing these stories all the time. Auctions are even more scummy than dealers.
Well, a lot of dealers acquire their cars from auctions, so there may be second order scummyness at work.
It's one thing to be a Car Salesperson and totally a different monster in Purchasing Cars for resale - Online purchasing is an added bouns, but being present in person is the way to go !
As someone who has 45 years of experience in the auto retail and wholesale business you just made a very good case for NOT buying online or believing the condition reports. It is inconvenient, but there is notsubstitute for being at the auction in person. If you believe an auction report you will be sorry much of the time.
It’s really beat up for a 2019. It’s sad to see however it just shows how so many people just destroy their vehicles. It’s probably never had an oil change.
I used your recommendation for Tom's Key but have been problems, ordered two keyfob and laser cut combos, have received only one and now have to find out how to program the key. I have been driving for 65 years and have worried about my 2019 Chevy Malibu not having a key and out in the middle of no-where and no key. Why has chevy made such a bad combo that it takes a miracle to get a new key. The nearest place to find a locksmith is that can duplicate it is almost 4 hours drive away from my home. There has to be a better way. So Far from ordering from Tom's to receiving half my order has been two weeks.
I own a car dealership, there is so much misinformation on these videos. If you went to the auction to check those cars in person you wouldn't have done so badly on them. You can't trust CR or auction photos. I have seen many new dealers not able to stay in business who try to follow the pure online buying strategy. I have one of the most efficient inventory processes in the country with data to back it up. My dealership is probably 15 miles from you. I have purchased over 5000 vehicles in the last five years alone at auction. I have sold 80+ cars per month for over a decade. I don't have to travel for auctions, I buy local. My mechanics and I physically check the vehicles ourselves. There is so much you're missing when you're only buying online. You can't touch, smell, drive, and inspect all aspects online. Because I buy at a local auction, my cars are my lot the next morning. Time is everything in this business
Especially since i know you have to be operating with a floorplan. I learned on a 2M floorplan, its a great way to get more efficent
But i now pay cash for all our inventory. My time to line is 2 days. My average age of inventory is 15 days
Nice and Sad to see this happens to experienced people too. I skip over a lot of vehicles when I am looking JUST by seeing so few photos. It is always a red flag to me. But man, what a hellacious story.
My '85 Dodge Aries K went through the auctiin last week and bids didn't pass $16.54. I refused to sell it and kept the car.
I am sincerely looking for a decent Aries or Reliant. I prefer a 2dr 4spd car but will consider other models depending on condition.
Trusting a car dealer's report about condition of a vehicle he is trying to sell to you is ridiculous. When one dealer trusts another dealer in similar situation is beyond ridiculous.
Its crazy, I'm a auto transport for 20 years and I find more damage on cars than the CR for my dealers
Kind of wish Mike you still worked at the Chevy dealership if you still did I would have loved to order a car through you
Mike telling the tea 🍵 👁👄👁
Judging how the hole in the headrest looks, it seems someone fired a round from the inside of the car through the headrest and out of the back window. Similar in Pulp Fiction.... minus the clean up.
(My comment was made before Mike explained it later in the vid)
Wonder if that windshield is OEM or not; the bullet looks like it would have traveled straight back through the rear window from the exit hole in the headrest.
@@markh.6687 Also possible.
Spotted the hood miss alignment when the video first came on.
DUDE YOU CANT RELY ON WHAT THEY SAY ONLINE. YOU HAVE TO GO IN PERSON AND INSPECT THE CARS BEFORE THE DATE OF THE AUCTION. NEVER BUY CARS ONLINE WITHOUT INSPECTING IN PERSON 1ST
"Gonna have to crash that Honda, Baby"
My buddy had a body shop in texas , did alot of work for local lots , one brought him a car with 4 holes in driver door and 4 holes out passenger, hmmmmm still with stuff inside ,h e did not fix it .
What was the Condition Report looked like when you end up selling it at auction ? Did you or auction disclose those damages when sold?
In Canada actual mileage is recorded at a provincial level so we see out of province vehicles for sale. Why, because it allows them to roll back odometers. They can switch pods from wrecked vehicles or tinker with them in other ways. 😮I once called for information on an out of province truck to the other provincial entity and they refused to give me any information. Protectionism between government and dealers?? It’s supposed to be public knowledge the odometer reading 😮
They're the people that give honest car people like you a bad name. Hopefully, someone sues them and wins big!
Everytime, I hear carfax I am surprised people bring up that useless company. As a former auto adjuster I tell everyone that carfax is junk. I worked for geico and we did not report to them and most body shops don't report to them as well. Insurance companies use their own system that is communicated between most of the big boys which will tell you all kinds of things that isn't on carfax but unfortunately it isn't available to the general public.
Am I used car buyer at a dealership. I avoid the auction as much as possible. I work with a trusted wholesaler and buy off the private market. It’s more than a full time job!
Mike we need our Chevy Dude fix.... where the next video 😂😉
Always take screenshots of everything before you call, in case you need it for evidence.
"Yes, I see." -- Perry Mason
Bought a car with 2 bullet holes in the driver's door at the Vegas auto auction. Sold it before I could get it to the body shop. 🤣
I have only bought one car in my life that I did not look at and test drive first.. That was a 1995 Geo Tracker in Chicago at a Dealership.. They claimed it was original paint.. You could see fresh green paint in the wheel wells over the undercoating.
The car was mechanically sound for the most part 5 speed manual.
I drove test drove it in the City after I had already paid for it on E-Bay .. It seemed to drive fine in the City.
When I got out on the Highway I could barley do 55 MPH .. I did hear a metal rattling sound at times.
Stopped at my friends house on my way home .. got the car up on blocks.. I figured out that if I really revved up the engine the springs by the exhaust manifold would let the exhaust pipe push away from the manifold then it could make a bit more power.
It turns out there was a lose piece of metal in the catalytic converter that was blocking off the exhaust .. Romoved that piece of lose metal and it ran with normal power..
Doing proper CR's add to the costs to the auctions to do them and if done with details, like listing the issue with this Mazda, lower the selling price of the vehicle and in turn their fee$ they can charge. The sad part is that this might be a mechanically sound vehicle with a lot of life left in it if properly priced to allow for repair costs. You could try online sources or junkyards for the mirror, headlight(s), headrest, other parts needed but that can be costly for your time and still flawed or the wrong color.
Could the hole in the mirror and in the sits head rest be correlated?
When are you getting the asphalt!!!
Usually those cars are deemed as "Vandalized" most time they are written off by the insurance "salvage title" Someone must of fixed the things they could and traded the suv in.
I did have a very good experience with the chevy dealer in Rolla. I bought a 2019 Malibu Lt. To me it looks like a new car and very surprised that a 4 cylinder engine is so peppy. The one thing that I am disappointed in is getting extra key fobs with laser cut key (high Security) There is no locale locksmith to create a new keyfob and laser cut key closer the 45 miles away and quited a 350+ fee for a new extra key. I did go through Tom's and have two new keyfob and laser cut key cut a about the same price of one from Chevy dealer. I have driven a 41 Pontiac, 50 Studebaker Champion, 55 Buick Century. 64 Chevy C10, 70 Torino, a Amc Hornet station wagon, 94 Ford F250, 2004 Silverado, a 2000 Mercury mystic and had never as much trouble to get extra keys in case I lost one. Technology can be great, but difficult at times. Why dealers charge so much I don't understand
So Far Tom's has been problematic. Ordered two keyfobs and laser cut keys and have only receieved half the order and that has been 8 days or so.
No gun , no cannoli .....
Bullet hole on the inside of the car, I would say it's safe to say is that car was a repo and a colored guy was the former owner. Broken clip on the front bumper cover
That is just crazy. This auction house needs to be shut down.
Say flabbergasted again 🤣
Yea Mike, bullet holes in Chicago cars is pretty normal. Also the roads there are terrible and the cars get really beat up.NEVER buy a car that lived in Chicago.
That had to be a Lori Lightfoot Chicago special.
Sounds like you need to talk to other small car dealers who have less than a hundred cars on the lot to see which auction houses that they favor.
Word of mouth reputation is very important. Tap into the collective experience of dealers like you who are located close by geographically.
Who got shot?…..Boo got shot!😂🤣😂
That a horrible auction. I told my friend so he doesn't buy from them 😠
We bought an auction car a few weeks ago the cr was 4.3. We get it in the whole left side was a different color the drivers seat was not the same color or material the doors were is aligned. We pull the seller and its a shady chop shop. they refused to arbitrate. So we sent it back to the same auction. They did a new condition report 2.3 this time. We then call them back it has one mile more on the car whats the difference? they then buy it back.
Guy buys a car online without looking at it. Mad at what he sees. Calls auction lazy but can’t make the effort to look at cars before purchase. But it wasn’t his fault!!
TY,,,,,,WOW incredible very interesting great information super kool,
AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ ,keep up the great work.
Lol my dad bought this GMC van with alot of bullet holes 😂
Wow! even Copart takes better pictures than that auction.
Havent seen any new cideos in 3 weeks hope all is ok.
Sounds like car dealers sales people dealing with the average customer
Sounds like if you researched the auction house before bidding you would have avoided all this.
Don’t buy cars from Chicago anymore. Lol.
is Mike flabbergasted?
Should’ve arbitrated for the car not being disclosed as prior theft and returned it
Absolutely. My guess is those replaced panels were from the shooting. I'd not be surprized if the seats weren't original, either, as blood and the like is hard to get out. There's no way a bullet hole through the headrest didn't end badly. Sorry to be graphic, but that's literally where your head is. The front being replaced would be likely because it rolled to a stop against something.
That car looked damaged in the pictures though… You could tell from the ones they posted it’s been in some sort of collision.
Bullet holes? As teenagers we’d take the backroads and find derelict cars 😊
Where are you mike have not seen new videos 😮
So you all need to get together and form a class action group and put the auction out of business and put the NAA in some financial jeopardy for endorsing these YaHoos. The NAA is only of value if they enforce the standards.
You can see in the picture that the hood was misaligned.
3 min in and its obvious this car has been in an accident of some kind with all the misaligned bodywork and the fact that the cover is missing from the rear tow point which suggests it had to be towed out of somewhere.. Super shady auction house.
The bullet was shot throw the window and ended up in the headrest, not the other way you were thinking. At Mark 5:13
Ok Mr.Professional event reconstruction specialist... If that's what happened then the bullet would have continued in travel after entering the back glass and perforating the rear head rest and lodged somewhere in the Dash or interior... That's obviously not what happened.
Maybe it stopped in the person that was sitting there ?
