After attempting to make a deal with a local dealership (complete failure) this past week, I'm mulling over the possibility of having @Chevy Dude find a car that meets my specs. I'm six hours away in Wisconsin but having zero hassle would certainly make it worth my time to go pick up a car from them and drop off my trade-in.
Mike, As a CPA, my question to you is: What is your competitive advantage and how are you maximizing on that. It appears to me that your current model is to be a standard small local used car lot and your advantage is that you are a nice guy. I propose that you figure out how you can focus your business around how you are unique. You have 420,000 RUclips Subscribers and have established a reputation with that customer base. As an example, you could have a business model where you search for the best Corvettes for regional or even national customers. With your knowledge of Corvettes, buying a car from you would be safer than buying from the average local car lot. People would be willing to pay extra for the increased level of assurance. You have numerous competitive disadvantages such as not being able to buy inventory at the prices that larger more established competitors are able to negotiate. A plan that maximizes on your advantages can offset the disadvantages.
Unfortunately your right that most dealers do fall into the trap of all the extra crap. My local Toyota dealer is like this. 3 times I’ve tried to deal with them, twice I got up and walked out, 3rd go round signed all the paperwork, brought the car home only to discover multiple things including no signed RISC. Drove it back the next morning and handed them the keys. We have a local independent dealer here, and it was no fuss 30 mins in and out. I think Mike & Mrs Chevy Dude will do just fine. I will be on the hunt for a lightly used WRX this spring, and will let them have a shot at it.
@@jgill1175 My friend bought a new WRX 6 months ago and the OEM dealership is offering to buy it back $5K over what he paid at retail. He is debating about it.
My dealership on Weston rd. in Canada has just as much cop every day, but the community is awesome, they also keep their eyes on shop when I am not around.
I absolutely agree. Buying a Car doesn't have to suck. Unfortunately, most dealers trip over themselves making sure that it does suck. Business is always full of challenges, but you definitely picked the most difficult time the car business has seen in years to give this a shot. As you're well aware, honesty is the best policy, and treating people with respect isn't hard to do. Keep that up, and you'll be just fine! The best of luck to you in this new venture!
My dad opened an independent dealership like you guys 4 years ago,and we did the same thing. He sold his personal truck and my car in the beginning to turn that into more inventory. Definitely see a lot of beginner mistakes that you guys did that we did too. There’s Always something new to learn and hope you guys do great!
As a former air con installer, it looks like your air con outlets in the ceiling have black gunk on them, which is typical as people rarely change the filters or clean the heating/cooling coils in their air conditioners. This is a breeding ground for bacteria and can make people sick (and smells pretty rowdy too) so I recommend having your air con serviced. All the best with the new business.
“Emotional Damage!” That came out of nowhere. Now I know the RUclips algorithm is working overtime when completely random channels I watch are also watching each other. I knew I liked you for a reason.
Congratulations again, had a few first in the new year. Being an entrepreneur ain't easy and having a Mrs Chevy Dude to compliment your business, what a blessing! Where's your wall of praise, awards, certificates, & license? 30 years ago I had to sell my L-82 4spd convertible, when I bought my gas station. God-speed
Mike, you and Mrs. Chevy Dude are so awesome! I’ve been following you for over a year. I’m in Florida, but If I were in your area, I would come by and donate my time to help you do busy work or whatever you needed to be done! I really mean that! My whole family is rooting for yall!
Hi 👋 Mike thank you 🙏 for sharing your knowledge! I’m from Southern California been your follower 2 years, I’m a truck driver in Midwest! Wishing you the very best of success all across God Bless you 👍
Can't stress enough how transparency will make your business grow. I came across your videos several months ago and really enjoy watching, and even more so "learning" about car dealerships and what to expect when purchasing a vehicle. I, unlike my wife :-), really enjoy speaking with the salesperson(s) and "working" through the numbers until we either reach a deal or don't. The only time I walked out of a dealership was due to a bad experience with an arrogant salesperson and a managerial staff member that spoke to me like I was stupid. Since then, I began doing my own research ahead of time and discovered how fun the "haggling" aspect can be :-). For example, I was able to show the salesperson things on a Jeep Rubicon that he did not know, again, you have to do your research. You may want to mention to your viewers that there is a big difference between "needing" a vehicle and "wanting" a vehicle. Some dealerships will use this to their advantage, which just isn't right. On a lighter note, I recently purchased a 2021 Trailboss LT and used the knowledge I learned from your videos to seal the deal. I wish you and your wife the best, YOU deserve it! Stay safe from Mid-Missouri. Fezz
Mike I wish you nothing but the best. I live in Mobile Alabama and I worked for a Chevy Dealership that didn’t charge all those hidden fees. This was in the late late 60’s until I left in the 80’s. He the owner was getting to the age that he just wanted to live what years he had left without the headache and his two sons didn’t want to take over the business. I have watched you for years. I honestly believe Mike that one day you will have your own Dealership and that you will make sure your customers are treated fairly. Just keep plugging away. And thanks for your videos. I wish you and your wife nothing but the very best in life and may God Bless you both.
Hey Mike, you are very lucky to have the best business partner for the dealership right next to you. That's nice. Thank you for your time on this update.
Just don’t go too far down that rabbit hole of giving up the things that enjoy and part of the reason you went into the business. Took me 10 years of that in my business to wake up and wonder what I did. It’s not a bad move to sell the Corvettes to secure the business’s future just don’t get into the regularity of doing that with your assets and especially your time. Wishing you guys all the best from an independent dealer that is stepping back and focusing on more enjoyment after 15 years. It is an extreme amount of work to run a upstanding and honest used dealership with the bad stigma around them. Glad you guys are chasing a dream.
Man, I love the honesty and effort you put into making these videos. If I were living close by you would have my business. Congrats and more power with the new biz! 🙏
I'm working on building my credit and I'm saving money for a down payment but as soon as my financial plan is finished and I'm where I want to be you definitely have my business!!
Congratulations and good luck Mike on your journey I was a small dealership used cars for about 25 years before I retired it can be both interesting and satisfying and profitable and I used to work out of a state that is really difficult and have strict laws from the DMV Good old New York I wish someday I could sit down and talk with you I think it would be very interesting why don't you try doing a live I would love to get in on that

The financial part of this is tough was involved with my family’s dealership for 20 years we were in buisness 47 years . Finance is one of the toughest things

Mike your finding out the reality that a small independent dealership is a totally different business compared to a franchised dealership. You need to face the reality that your not going to be selling high dollar newer cars. People do not come to small dealerships for that. You also need to look at return on investment on what you do to cars. The add on stuff that works on new cars will sink you on used. The vast majority of people buy used cars based on price. Condition is often NOT the first thing they look at. The reality for many people is that a "perfect" car is too expensive for them so they will buy what they can afford. So adding a $300-400 dent removal cost or extended warranty, to the car will often not raise the value enough to increase the profit. Selling $40-50K vehicles at this stage of your business will not generate the volume you need to survive. Selling $10k-20K vehicles will stretch your inventory dollars further while still making a fair profit. One of the most successful used car dealerships around me, never has a high dollar vehicle on his lot. I know him well. He told me years ago his claim to fame is selling economical, reliable transportation to the average Joe. There are a lot of average "Joes" in the world compared to the HIGH wage earners is small town USA. Mike I wish you and your wife the best of luck in your new business. You’re in over your head. You left something amazing to “be your own boss”. Sometimes things are not better this way.
