Ingredients
Servings: 5
1 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup(s) filtered water, lukewarm
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 large egg
1/4 cup(s) butter, melted
Powdered sugar, for topping
Oil, for frying
Directions 11 steps | 170 Minutes
Step 1
First, measure and prep all the ingredients you’ll need to make fried dough.
Step 2
Next, prepare the fried dough. In the bowl of a standing mixer or a large bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, instant yeast and salt.
Step 3
Then in a measuring cup, whisk together the filtered water, vegetable oil and egg.
Step 4
Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture and stir to combine. You should stir until a sticky dough forms.
Step 5
Switch to the dough hook or knead the dough by hand for about 5 minutes.
Step 6
Then shape the dough into a smooth round ball. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. After that, place the bowl in a warm room and let the dough rise until its nearly doubled in size. This will take about 1-1½ hours.
Step 7
Next, shape the dough. Remove the dough from the bowl and deflate it by gently pushing it down. On a lightly floured surface, divide the risen dough into five pieces.
Step 8
Using a rolling pin, roll out each piece of dough to a ½-inch thick disc. If the dough springs back, wait about 5 minutes before attempting to roll out the dough again.
Step 9
Now it is time to fry the dough. Line a sheet pan with a cooling rack and then fill a heavy-bottomed pot or a Dutch oven with about 2 inches of oil. Heat the oil to 350°F. Prepare the melted butter along with a pastry brush. Once the oil is hot, add the dough, one or two discs at a time, and fry the dough until it's golden brown on both sides. This will take about 2-2½ minutes.
Step 10
Remove the fried dough to the prepared wire rack and fry the remaining dough you have. Then brush the fried dough with melted butter.
Step 11
Top off your fried dough with a generous dusting of confectioners’ sugar. Fried dough is best served the day they are made. Enjoy!

Thank you for this recipe I’ve recently been baking at home and I’m going to sleepover my grandmas, she loves fried dough so I can’t wait to make this for her.
Can’t go wrong with fried dough! Honey sounds like a perfect way to serve.
This is a most perfect recipe! It's my "Funday Friday" treat...I love the round puffy ones however, I fry this in thin strips, extra crispy as well for others...lots of confectioners sugar OR cinnamon sugar (WOW) coffee and Friday Night dessert. Yummy with a scoop of ice cream as well!! Such a great dough...it's perfect for any variation you like. Thank you so much for this! 👩🍳

Thank you for your kind words about our fried dough recipe! We're so glad you enjoyed it 🥰
Good video. Simple and effective. Subbed
I could watch this recipe video over and over again. Another variant would be filling the fried dough with custard …
Looks delicious! What is the difference between this dough and doughnut dough??
Hi There! While both doughs are yeast-based doughs, the fried dough recipe will produce flatter, chewier and crispier treat versus a doughnut which will be lighter, airier and more fluffy. The doughnut dough will generally be sweeter than the fried dough as it uses more sugar. I hope that helps!
@CozymealStudios yes it does. Thanks
How would I store the dough if I only wanted to fry a couple pieces
Hi! For best results, the dough should be used the same day it is made. However, you can refrigerate a portion of the proofed dough for about 2 days maximum to fry at a different time. Be sure to let the dough come to room temperature before shaping. :)
I've never seen it with Confectioner's sugar on it, when we got it it was always with butter all over it
Interesting! The butter variation sounds sinfully delicious 🧈😋
Yum im on a roll .with recipes and belive me\im going to cook em up for men special one .
Don't be afraid to add extra flour. I did exactly what she does and it was sticky as fuck
Thank you for an actual recipie for dough! Google wants to give multiple recipies with no yeast!!! I'm sorry but this type of dough needs yeast and elasticity!
We agree! The chew from the yeast dough is an essential part of fried dough
