The woke backlash to Ricky Gervais "transphobia" outrage dissected by comedian Leo Kearse

Поделиться

  • Опубликовано: 29 май 2022
  • Ricky Gervais's new Netflix special provoked a huge backlash online, with wild accusations of transphobia coming from the Twitterati, leftwing press and other comedians such as Nish Kumar and James Acaster - even Robin Ince, who got his break from Ricky. Robin is a straight white male comedian who developed his career in the 90s when he would've actually benefited from the patriarchy and systemic racism that he now rails against. I started comedy in 2009, I missed that boat.
I think Robin should stand aside and make space.
I look at the pearl-clutching responses of Vox, Esquire and reveal how a comedy industry "insider" who condemned Ricky was actively nasty to a new act. I also explain why Ricky's material isn't hateful or transphobic and the power of comedy to expose fallacies in weak ideology.

From somebody who considers himself to be "centre left" politically, this is another brilliant deconstruction of woke-ism (is that even a word?). I used to like Nish, but now I'm not so sure. From what I have seen and heard his was a pointless, misdirected, virtue signalling outburst from an angry man who doesn't seem to have an actual point to make, simply he wants to slam somebody while not offering anything intelligent to add to the debate. Keep it going Leo. Thank you.

Hardly. Deconstructing would be pointing out that we won't have the technology to trans anyone for a century and it's no different than identifying as a Martian. The very use of the word is nonsense. It's a condition very similar to anorexia and needs to be treated in the same way, not with cosmetic surgery.

Does he even know what a racist looks like, well if he looks in the mirror he will see one looking back at him. He is lucky there is positive discrimination, as he wouldn't get a gig on tv with his comedic writing.
Maybe he could go and check out how many ticket sales Gervais has had over his career and then compare that number to his own. Rather than sitting there with their blood boiling deciding what is right and wrong, has anyone ever thought to stop and ask people like me who are the subject of trans humour if we are offended? The answer is no, simply because the humour is not directly aimed at any one person. Being trans I dont feel directly affected by Rickys humour. Nish on the other hand makes me feel very uncomfortable to walk out the door in the morning and my work collegues no longer know how to talk to me, for fear of offending me. So they dont talk to me at all.

Chears Leo - brilliant observations, as always.
What I do love about Ricky Gervaise is his studied indifference to all this kerfuffle. No, make that unstudied indifference. I doubt that he deliberately makes himself a controversialist. He simply finds the absurd funny, as we all do. The problem is that the one thing ideologues cannot STAND is to have their ideologies mocked. George Orwell was once asked why he thought the Nazis would ultimately fail if they had occupied Britain. He said "people would just have fallen about laughing at the goose step."
Keep making us laugh at the 'goose step' Ricky. You imitate their 'walk' perfectly, we laugh, and they object. It is a kind of magic.
Yet the best magic is this. To Gervais this is 'old news.' It's as if Kumar is criticising 'The Office.' Ricky has moved onward and upward and the left arguing the toss over it is like them wrangling over who should have one the first Boat Race.

  • @I-Dophler

There are still some comedians who challenge the status quo, but they seem to be in the minority. Woke culture is why we see so many “cancel culture” moments and online outrage mobs. We see people becoming more and more hesitant to say anything that might be construed as offensive.
Every day, someone is getting “cancelled” for something they said or did that was offensive. And it’s not just celebrities and public figures who are at risk of being cancelled - it can happen to anyone.
Woke culture has created an environment where people are afraid to speak their minds. They’re fearful of saying something that might be interpreted as offensive, and they’re fearful of being “cancelled.”
This problem is because it stifles creativity, open dialogue, and honest discussion. When people are afraid to speak their minds, we all lose out on the benefits of hearing different perspectives.
Woke culture also leads to a lot of online echo chambers. People tend to surround themselves with others who share their same beliefs.

I wish people like Ricky would stop "punching down" at the trans community.
I mean, I know trans people are very visible in the West, and enjoy days of visibility where they can wave their allotted flags freely and with pride: I know they enjoy an entire month where their community is celebrated alongside other LGBTQ+ people: I know that businesses and sporting teams regularly come out in celebration of them too, and change their social media presence to reflect that: I know the Trans community can actually alter the definition and useage of certain words within the English language in an extraordinarily short period of time: I know that Trans athletes are allowed to compete against members of the opposite sex who have a physical disadvantage because of the very nature of their sex....and win: and I know that Trans people enjoy legislation that makes them a "protected class", so it's difficult to throw criticism their way because of a social and legal retribution.
But apart from all that I WISH people would stop punching down!

Ricky Gervais didn't say nothing inherently transphobic - he just took something extremely faithful to today's reality and comically exaggerated it, which is pretty much exactly what comedians do. And it's pretty telling that most if not all of his critics do not take time to actually analyze the joke and explain why it's transphobic, much more emphasis is put on the fact that Ricky included a joke that makes fun of trans people at all, and how much time was devoted to it compared to the length of the special, implying that the correct time one can be devoting to jokes about trans community is zero, everything else is immediately transphobic, "punching down", a direct call to violence against trans people etc..
BUT at the same time we are faced with absurd scenarios on daily basis, with medias desperately taking care to respect the pronouns of violent rapists, and athletes with obviously male physiques absolutely dominating women's sports. How do you expect comedians not picking up on this? The jokes are basically writing themselves, it only takes someone brave enough to openly admit the emperor is naked.
