The Active Learning Method

- "Active learning" means you participate, collaborate with others, and apply concepts to the real world. It requires hard mental effort but leads to better retention and an understanding of the material that can be transferred to other situations. To explain how to apply Active Learning in classrooms, we collaborated with Professor Carl Wieman, a Nobel Prize winning physicist, who researches and champions the approach. Prof. Wieman helped us proofread, fact check and write the script - he was an invaluable source of information. It was our greatest honor to be able to work with a mind as bright as his. #activelearning

Just as a contrary view, active learning dosent work well for neuro-atypical/ASD students and can add extra stress to the class by adding a social and hierarchical element to the study. It is actively trying to encourage system 2 thinking (which is most likely naturally already in excess), by encouraging a chaotic environment which in turn disrupts system 2.
That's why it's important to have work and life experience. Once you have work and life experience, the classroom theory makes a lot more sense, and the information is retained better. As you would be able to apply that in real life.
True
This explains why i remember lab related questions better than what i read in the textbook because in the lab I'm more practical
Aristotles view as well
@@PrescillaKgade Same to me
In Germany there is a thing here called Ausbildung(Apprenticeship) we’re you learn the information and then put it in practice. All of this is part of the learning curriculum and most of the times you get payed. I wish the world had more of this. We could solve a big problem in a society with this educational system.
someone show this to our education system authorities so they focus on learning instead of completing the syllabus on time
Unfortunately there are many rules and regulations schools need to follow, whether it’s beneficial or not.
In order to use techniques like this you sort of need to bend the rules a bit.
In order to receive funding schools focus on stuff like writing traditional curriculums and raising state test scores, not much else.
Indian education system sucks
Yeah! So true !
@@rigidnoir agree
@@rigidnoir my 9th ,10th Sir had preety much use the same method this video just remind me of him.
I've been watching sprouts for ages and never get disappointed. I just wish they'd upload more frequently. Their style greatly inspired influenced mine

❤Techniques for active learning
Asking questions as you read.
Make notes in your own words.
Summarising what you read.
Talking to someone about the information you're learning. ...
Thinking about how the new information fits in with things you already know.
Thinking about how you can use the new information in your studies and in your everyday life.
+ don't forget to review what you have learned
Really nice summary, thank you
Pretty good techniques, thank u
Who should I talk about my information with? No one is interested in what I say and I got no friends
@@aryazeref Yeah, you need to review it for a week back to back to fully memorise it.
I've noticed that active learning encourages students to think hard and understand topics quickly. It was kind of difficult at the very beginning, but they have realized they have improved a lot in a couple of months.
I had a module for thermodynamics and the lecturer was so brilliant we all finished with a distinction. Still praise that man.
A great model for learning and teaching. Enjoyed learning
Also requires the right teacher's/instructor's skills to organise an effective active learning class
Our english teacher teaches us by active learning and because of that, we could easily remember the details of the literary works that she taught us. Compared to our other subject teachers who use the conventional style of teaching, we get sleepy even though the discussion was short.
My grade 8 class was an at least a semi-active environment. I still remember that call pretty well and what we learnt, although it has been some time now. It truly does help to engage students somewhat. I miss that with 90% of my math teachers, non were as good as my 8th-grade math teacher.
That's the way almost all teachers uses where I come from
Going through the classes was merely a process of memorization
Subjects that were science based were a nightmare
I barely graduated from high school and wasn't interested in college
With time I knew that learning should not be like that, and started studying on my own using more useful, interactive and hands on methods
And now I'm a web developer in charge of a whole team
So yea, if you're struggling to learn, It's most likely not your fault
Try new learning methods like this one and you'll see the results for yourself
Never give up on learning!
Yes similar, this was called prac work within the computer systems course we did. Unfortunately it's difficult to find offline study like this anymore, I was lucky to be taught with people who knew there subject matter from real life experiences
At uni my some of my professors do this, but one important aspect is that it requires effort (with practice it gets easier), at the end of the day my brain feels crushed haha but I do retain information for longer periods of time,so sometimes I only revise certain topics instead of everything (as I used to do)...also if you don't read before the class, there's no way you can solve the problems...so organization and consistency are also other main points for the method to work
I love active learning. In chemistry my teacher gives me question then we discus why we are right. Then we watch a video or he teaches us then we go in groups and make a short presentation.
Thank you for making this video because I had suffered a lot in recent months with my studies. But this might be life changing. Once again thank you......
Hi Random stuffs, we are so happy to hear our video helped you; it means the world to us! Good luck :)
wow the active learning explanation seems like a dream for me. that would’ve been so enlightening and fun to learn that way!
Your channel is doing great work .If a person spend 18-20yr of life in school &college after that he gain zero because of wrong teaching technique .Actually school & college need to learn first how to teach. After all your channel is good & I want you to keep going forever.
Hi skubhg, thank you for the comment! We are so happy to know you are finding our videos helpful :) If you want to see our channel grow and you are not yet our Patron, please consider becoming one at www.patreon.com/sprouts.
Thank you!
It also depends on the person. If he took his studies pretty seriously, he wouldn't gain zero, no matter which technique he used.
They to busy pushing Woke agendas to train teachers properly any more
my first-year physics course uses active learning. I really believe this works. since the form is too novel to me, I hardly ever forget anything from the course! the understanding of the material is definitely another level. it is hard at the beginning, but after I became adapted to it, this course becomes my highest course among courses this semester. Other courses are not using active learning.
my computer science prof tought a lot like this. Also, everytime as student came up with an idea thats wrong, he didnt say "thats wrong". he tested their ideas against other ideas and challenged a deep understanding of the topic. He never really explained, he showed us.
"If it's unlikely that the new information will be used again, the brain is smart enough to throw it away." Me who studied for an exam once ;-;
Oh wow.. This was so useful! I will definitely be using these methods for myself and will be encouraging my students to use this too ☺ thank you so much for the video!
This content is gold! Thanks for generously sharing your knowledge.
Glad you found us!
The active learning method is fun done w interested learners and a guide, I can recall how my college psychology teacher used this form of pedagogy and it made a lasting impact. Thank you Mr. B and the creators behind this vid c:
I have learned as student and thought active learning as teacher in my class. Thank you sprouts for helping teachers teach more effectively.

How
Though i am not a teacher(but of course a student) , i always had a intution that best way to teach someone something is by asking a question first(i firmly believe a teacher who understands his topic well, will know what question to ask to trigger right thinking among learners) , then getting answers & plausible explanations for it from learners(even though they have slightest prior knowledge) and after that give actual concept explanation to learners by frequently referring to the wrong explanation given by them at starting(if any) so to tell them where they lost the track to actual explanation.
Now i know why this method will work. Today I am glad to know that my intution has a testimony from a nobel prize winner. Nice VideO!!! 👍🙂
This is just amazing for me as an educator. Thanks!
Very happy to hear that. Check our website too ;)
And that ladies and gentlemens, is how\why I forgot almost all of the content I learn in high school and college.
Because we did not use that content on daily basis
As one man who was a psychologist said,"memories are unlimited there's no limit as to how many memories we can encode."
yes I have been doing active learning since elementary school. my retention of knowledge since elementary school is high due to the participative environments.
Beautiful and great ideas, such methods must be included in the educational curricula.
I am a very visual person and this makes it many times easy and interesting.
Never learned in that way !! Maybe some of us who might become teachers one day, will get benefited from videos like this ..
I sure hope so :D!
I was lucky enough to have s teacher like that.
You teach us Active Learning in Passive way 😂.
Thankyou very much for the information 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻
I have the feeling my teacher uses this method. I would wished she had told us sooner. Because i feel so far behind on her classes. If I had know this i could have prepared my self for her lessons.
Perfect ideas. Definitely learners work better when they practice collaborately allthough it's easier said than done. I guess more studies need to be done in this regard Thanks 💐
Absolutely well done and definitely keep it up!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Active Learning in classes would mean teachers have to put in some effort to engage a class and work with the students. In essence, a happy classroom. The process becomes efficient over weeks thanks to neuroplasticity and compounding knowledge, making the job easier. But instead of that they'd rather keep the class quiet and in check, 'disciplined' (or should I say suppressed), do all the toxic atrocities to 'manage'(should I say control) a student, waste effort achieve nothing, be incompetent and unproductive, for some job satisfaction and feel miserable all the same ; idiocy at its finest.
Many times, we teachers, get observed because our children "are having too much fun with you"...... 😥😥
I can (and do) make the most engaging and fun lessons that challenge students... but they don't want to do it... they just want you to tell them the answer... they want an A but won't put in time or effort to get it...
We should even change the word "education" to discovery
Many students are used to being passive listeners OR just get unfocused if they are given a task. Facilitating productive active learning is a higher skill set, it's worth it, but it's significantly harder than preparing a lecture (for most teachers).
This is why having a good instructor is important. Half assed professor will not only make the students bored, they will also lose motivation since the instructor isn't explaining it properly
@Sprouts Can you please create a video that applies active learning to online learning? I would love to know how you would apply these principles to online learning methods. Thank you!
This is very possible when every next lesson has concepts from almost every lesson previously taught
Taking Science in India has this benefit that we are asked every 2nd day about the concept we learned long back
The questions need to be real life examples cause this gives a new perspective of how we look at things
At the end, its all about your curiosity to learn something irrespective of teacher, sub or your environment
I love this channel! Thank you for the content you create! 😊

As a professor, I have no idea how we can perform this teaching style in our class. I am a math professor. It is impossible to cover all the material from the syllabus by this method, since it would take time to teach just one topic..
I thought this method seemed oddly familiar... and it was! Wieman taught at my university and we use his method.
And do you still remember some of the things he taught?
Sprouts Yes. I understood things better which helped with long term retention.
How did you end up finishing the course as it seems that it will take a lot of time to cover one topic?
This is true and is the best way to bring understanding
Excellent video, clearly explained!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was my teaching style for some classes. Learn by doing. Thanks
I hate it when I have to do all the talking. so now I learnt that instead of talking about what I want my students to know, i just design it as an interesting activity that they have to spend time doing together
I wish this was how our teachers taught us in school
I just realized that my favourite lecturers were the ones who used this method.
I wish this was the case! our class is just passive !!
Now, how to apply this to homeschooling my niece.
I never had a class where active learning was incorporated. I now feel bad for me and my peers. 😭
If you're a great passive learner you'll be an even greater active learner.
WOWWW thanx you for the creative commons That made my day!

The Animations were cute and the voice is beautiful
My optics professor at college teaches like this, it was fun not gonna lie, except when you didn't read beforehand the chapter
Please make a video on the best studying method for students to understand anything conceptually. I hate the way i study.
Please teach journalism also lyk this 😋
Active learning of physcology
I've never studied in an Active Learning environment. Sounds very interesting, though.🙏
Why is this not use by all teachers by now?
I've developed a personal learning plan that is both effective and suitable for me with one RUclips search. Wish the schools could do the same. I reall have a hard time at school since I don't learn much with their teaching so I self study and then get good marks during exams. But during our discussions I cant answer most of the questions they ask so they think I dont know anything thus if I get good marks they usually suspect me of cheating. It's depressing at this point.
This looks like so much fun
Thanks for all these information
I love Active Learning
Yes 🙌
great art!😀
Something similar to that method was used by Muslims for hundred of years. Students would learn the subject before the class started and tried to understand it. During the class the teacher would explain every detail of the subject and answer the question of the students. After the class students would revise the subject and the next day there were small debates about it.
Wow! that's great
I’m a little bit curious about how we can ascertain students would read textbooks and understand concepts before classes. In my country, most students don’t take preview assignments seriously. How can we deal with it?
Which software are you people using to make videos....can you tell me...??
Hi Amazaon quiz! To find out more about how we make our videos visit our Patreon profile at www.patreon.com/sprouts :)
Liked it but my teachers never did it -from india
Is it more rote learning there?
Same here. Me also from India. :/
@janina873 simply put it's more than rote lol
If u want somewhat detailed explanation I have provided below well my exact state
it's more rote coz we evem remember assumptions (which will be totally wrong ) and for the following assumptions we mug up extra stuff and the pathetic part is teacher will even defend answer if it's wrong coz well if they accept means u know the concept and by knowing concepts u will apply the correct logic for a wrng question(which again requires wrng knowledge) and u will score less then teacher's name spoiled so the cycle just continues
Thankyou ❤️
Is it possible for you guys to list a refrence list for your videos? It would be incredibly helpful
Hi Amir Ezat, for the reference list please check out the description box. You can also always find the references in our scripts. Hope this helps :)
Which program did you use for animation? All is super
In our decades passive was the usual method. Whatever useful we have learned, learned outside of schools. And, of course, Google has been supporting us since its inception.
"Do I need to know?"
Relatable when it comes to algebra
Wow.. This is how my college teaches class..
Lucky you!
Amazing videos!
I'm done with School. How do i apply active learning to my personal study session?
New voice and music, cool
Excellent.
I can safely say I can still speak Spanish after 5 years post graduation. I couldn't tell you the Quadratic Equation again though...
In practice, work in groups happens like this: 5 fuckers all insist on the wrong answer, you say the right one, everyone votes, you lose. In the end, it turns out that the answer is wrong, but no one cares, since no one is responsible for it. No matter how specific no one suggested it, this is the group's answer, which means that you can't point your finger at someone alone and say, you're wrong. Everyone will shift the answer to each other and in the end, everyone will not care about defeat and they will not learn anything. And they will do the same next time. Inspired by my own university studies.
This technique does not always work in all settings and in all disciplines all of the time. For example, in the arts and writing classes, sometimes you need to work alone. However, school leaders will often latch onto one or two popular teaching methods and expect teachers to apply this method every day to every discipline. Also, school leaders will often pick and choose teaching methods tgat suit their own particular learning style instead of looking at which teaching methods are appropriate for different subjects.
This type of teaching method is best suited for “the sciences”.
Great idea
That's really awesome!
woah 1day ago? Ive been watching these for hours :D
I think it should be explained in much better way and clear explanation as described in the book
Love to sprouts

My teacher does this
The killer is that teachers themselves are not encouraged or interested in learning new things, let alone spending extra time studying and practicing to improve their students' learning outcomes.
It’s sad
Is there a thing called Proactive learning?
