When you switch to manual focus mode the AEL/AFL button will focus, you don't have to reassign the button to AF-ON. It will still lock the exposure as well in the default setting. The X100F works the same way. If you 'click' the joystick you can then change the focus point size using the back control wheel. I set the button function of the back control wheel to 'ISO' so I can switch between auto ISO settings without menu diving (on the X-E3 the ISO menu also includes all manual ISO settings, the camera does not have a physical ISO control, it's the easiest way I've found to access ISO settings on that camera, so I set the X100V to work in a similar way to keep things consistent). Some people swear by using backbutton focus, but it's not for me. If you want to *always* use backbutton focus you can set the shutter release not to focus (setup -> button/dial settings -> shutter AF), and assign AF-ON to a button of your choice.
Glad I found your videos, Booray. Thanks for the deep dive into the menus. I use two systems and it helps to know the details to set them up similarly.
This is a very, VERY useful video, thank you so much for making the rather complex AF/MF menu easy to understand for a rather impatient user such as myself.
The Instant AF Setting also applies if you have the AEL/AFL button set to "AF LOCK ONLY" or "AE/AF LOCK". In this case the AEL/AFL button enables back button focus when in manual focus mode, and the Instant AF Setting determines whether it's Single or Continuous.
Hi Booray, I've only just recently got this camera and I'm trawling the RUclips videos to find the best way to set it up. I came across this and it's fantastic, exactly what I want. I'm just a bit confused as you seem to be saying at the beginning that you have the rear wheel set to select both the Focus Area and the Focus Mode. That's obviously not correct so which button do you have to select which option?
Sorry for the confusion. The rear wheel is set to Focus area, which means if you click it and turn it the size of the focus are will change. The AF mode in the menu is set to All. That means that when i use the wheel to change the size of the focus area it will cycle through the different AF settings. So, say you start at the smallest focus spot and start to cycle up. It will go through about 5 sizes in "Single Point" then switch to "Wide" and do about 5 sizes before going to "wide" which is the whole screen. If you change the AF mode to say, single point, it will just cycle through those first sizes and start over never getting as big as the zone or wide sizes. :)
Good Morning, Booray.....I am still laughing about the video. Your humor really comes through. When all is said and done, the technology today is way smarter than all of us. Also, it is not necessarily what we need to take good pictures. So, along with the very basic setups you confirm are important, I would offer a large dose of relaxing and breathing as necessary elements to help enjoy this glorious piece of equipment. My own conclusions have been this camera requires a large dose of sneaking up on it and absorbing it over a period of time. It is not a camera one just wakes up with a full understanding of it’s capabilities and quirks. Thank you for a terrific video and just another confirmation of why I own this camera. Regards....Wayne
The range limiter, when in use, will increase the autofocus speed since the camera will only operate within the selected constraints., i.e. either beginning at 2 meters or 5 meters in the presets or in the range you set in custom. My preference is to merely zone focus with aperture and focus distance in manual focus mode.
I think that is right, it’s for faster focusing. My 70-300 lens for my XT4 has a switch that limits AF to more than 5 metres for the same reason. I haven’t tested whether either function really does makes practical speed difference, though
Many thanks for this very helpful tuto !!! Using the view finder and AF, is it an option to be able to move the focus point, not being obliged to press the focus trigger before ? It's weird for me since moving the focus point is obviously the first action I do when switching on the camera, so why another action ?
Range Limiter, It was a catchy tune 'standing on the corner watching.....', But if you were, and set the range to across the street for the gals to walk by' I think you could reduce the focusing time. OK, I've never tried it, but you gave me something to think about. Thanks again.
Yeah, I've only ever thought of the purpose of range limiter in terms of reducing back and forth hunting that contrast-detect-focusing cameras do, but that can't be what range limiter is for in this camera, since it focuses using phase detect.
You really are gifted at explaining things, I gotta say. Now, if only I could find someone teaching higher math that's as gifted as you... (Nancy Pi comes closest)
Range Limiter: i imagine a sports stadium with some expectators in front of me, between me and the players. I can set the range limiter to not focus on the people in front of me but to only focus at the distance of the players. I think it will work better with zone focus so if i aim at the same time to a expectator (near) and a player (far) the camera will choose the player because is in the range. Also i think is better use the RELEASE option so the camera will take a picture even when it fails to choose the focus but will only focus in the range selected.
Buckle up because I'm about to blow your mind. Push in the dial and hold it... The settings menu for the dial will pop up on the rear screen and you can set it to focus area 📷😎😁👍
I am new to the x100 line, just bought the V. I bought it as my travel and carry everywhere camera. I also come from the world of shooting raw and processing. I love your approach of shooting jpegs and getting a final image in the camera. Do you adjust the in camera settings for the jpegs? A video on the pros and cons would be helpful there. Thanks
@@garyscaife429 I actually don't adjust those settings. I know that a lot of people have their own custom setup but I've found that Fuji does such a good job of giving you a good image to start with... my instinct is always to have the original file just be a good clean file and then I can modify it later if I want to
I use range limiter in house when I shoot my kids, they move quickly...rooms aren’t huge...I know the range basically and the camera is a bit faster focusing. Not a game changer, but quite useful from time to time..
I know.. I need a new one. The thing is... I did so mant for the X100F and they all apply to the V as well. I'm actually planning a live seminar on exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc sometime soon. :)
@@BoorayPerry Will be watching out for it. Really enjoy your content, style, personality and sense of humor. Although, the podcast is where that sense of humor really shines through. You guys crack me up. Keep on keepin' on.
Excellent! Can you elaborate a little on Corrected A/F frame please. Tried it and yes noticed the extra focus box - so far so good..question is: for example say one was focusing on a cup on a table with the optical viewfinder and corrected af on.. do you still point the camera at the cup as normal with it in the green box or, do you move the camera so the cup falls within the extra box?
Ok, I tested it against the writing on a cigarette packet standing on a table, from a distance. If you focus using the green box as usual on the packet - the writing is sharp, if you point the camera at the packet using the dotted box it is blurred. So, have to use the usual auto focus green box. Mmmm I don't see what the other box is for in that case ...
@@BoorayPerry great, it would be nice to know what you discover, I use the optical viewfinder quite a lot as like the retro vibe of it, although the evf is probably better in most other ways
How do you change the rear command dial to the different focus settings? It’s not part of the other options like shutter speed, aperture, exp comp, etc.
@@BoorayPerry Thx for the reply. If I press in the rear command dial it toggles between 2 box sizes in the lower right. I'm not sure what that is exactly. I thought it would cycle between single, zone, wide-tracking and all.
@@BoorayPerry Yes, I can, then after I move it, the display changes to a bunch of small focus dots. This is only happens in single focus mode and All focus mode. Sorry for the basic questions, just not understanding.

I see AF Range Limiter is only avaiable in M focus mode. Antonio's explanation makes sense. Appreciate your taking time to go through this.
AF Range Limiter is useful for candid street photography. Quick sharp photos if you stick to the pre-set distance.
