    Pro tip: engage/disengage the ND filter by pulling and holding the evf/ovf lever to the right for about 3 seconds. Also, so long as you don't have the AF lever lock turned on, you can set the AF Mode to "All", then if you push the AF lever down it will let you scroll through all the various modes without having to go into menus or assigning it to the Q button.

      I actually have the button on the EVF/OVF lever mapped to the ND filter so I can quickly toggle it on or off. Sometimes those few seconds can really make the difference.

    Few people seem to know (because it's buried in the manual) that once you lock the EC dial, you can "unlock" it on the fly by holding down the "menu/ok" button for a few seconds (that unlocks anything you have locked in the menu, as you show in this video). You will get confirmation on the screen that it is unlocked. This is really useful if you DO occasionally use the EC dial and thus don't want to dive into the menus to re-enable it. You can re-lock it by again holding the "menu/ok" button until you get the confirmation that it is locked again.

    GREAT VIDEO! I really learn a lot! Talking about the focus lever setting, just in my personal opinion, I found out that Push to Unlock seems to be much better. It allows you to adjust the size of your focus frame in the shooting screen on the fly, you don’t need to go back to the menu.

  • @paramidge8935
    @paramidge8935 2 года назад +7

    Some good tips here most of which make good sense, thanks. One huge faux pas however. Why advise photographers (particularly newbies) to lock of the most useful physical dial on any camera - the exposure compensation dial. Do you never do your street photography at night for example? That dial is indispensable in neon and street lamp lit scenes. Another prime example would be interiors where there are bright windows lighting the background (e.g. a cathedral stained glass window) indeed any scene where highlights are obviously blowing. Without that comp dial you will have to spot meter for the window (or sky or sign or reflection or whatever). This task is so much easier, quicker more controlled with the exposure dial, where you can shoot in small increments and get the balance between subject and lighting source right whilst concentrating on the other key element composition. The exposure comp dial is a key tool for a pro photographer it gives you controller the light - all newbies should jump right in and learn how to use it - it isn't hard with the decent evf's on these cameras, it's wysiwyg intuitive.

    Yo! Great video as always. Another, super quick way to change the size of the focus frame is to click the focus lever (per your other tip) and then you’re in the same spot - so you can change the size of the focus frame with the wheel just like you demonstrated. It’s quicker than going thru the menus. I use it all the time, great feature! Cheers!

    Fantastic advice, thank you! I’m new to the X100V and have been intentionally using it ‘as is’ while I feel my way around it. Over the last couple of days I’ve been thinking it’s time to RTFM and start customising things. Your suggestions make a lot of sense. I’m doing street in SE Asia but still working up the nerve to get closer than I needed to with my previous camera (it had a zoom lens). Slowly getting there…

    I had the original X100 for many years and absolutely hated the EC button. Coming from a Leica background, I almost always shoot in manual mode, rendering EC meaningless. However, I would often unintentionally move the dial. Being able to lock EC is certainly a useful feature. Good to know in case I ever want to buy an X100V or another Fuji again.

    Great video, but I love the exposure compensation dial. But that's also part of why I keep the bar running along the left side of my display to show me where it's set for. In sunny weather, I will often times set it to -0.3 stops. It makes post-processing much easier and making sure my highlights aren't too bright. But that's what is great about the X100V, is super customizable and a great piece of kit for most photographers.

    Good tips. Two things though. I have never had any problems with the focus point moving when the lever is set to "Push to unlock". No need to remove that feature completely, if you ask me. And also, setting the focus point to the smallest, is maybe more precise to point with, but you will also miss more shots, since the area where it tries to focus, has less contrast to use for focusing.

    • @FaizalWestcott
      @FaizalWestcott  2 года назад +2

    Ah! Thanks a lot for the Focus frame lock tip. This was one of my most annoying problems. I list a lot of family photos, because the focus box moved to the lover left corner of the frame.
    In fact the always hustleing with the focus made me almost not using the camera anymore.
    Additionally I had to set the touchscreen to untouchable because, I still could accidentally change the focus point with the „all“ setting.
    Maybe you have saved my relationship with the Fuji. 😊😅

    I'm sorry if my comment isn't worded well.
    I use an x100f. My setting are
    Aperture priority,
    3 iso presets (my most used is one that maxs out at 800iso)
    I use autofocus (the mutliple square one) but 90% of the time, I manually focus after the autofocus, you get to manually micro adjust it with focus peeking.
    I've never used the viewfinder, it takes too long, so I would half press the shutter to get the focus and exposure then manually micro adjust the focus with the ring and shoot.
    Spot metering also works perfect with this, just point at the brightest parts, half press, reframe, focus with the ring and shoot.

    You’d put the exposure compensation on the screen to make sure you don’t shoot at the wrong setting. It’s very unintrusive (sits vertically on the left) and doesnt’ get on the way.
    For me, I always have it set up to C and I can easily adjust the exposure with the front dial while shooting on aperture mode.
    Also, if you like the simple frame lines and focus square in the OVF, know that you can toggle between that and a an OVF with more data by using the DISP/BACk button too. The same works on the screen/EVF. You can have say: third lines, histogram, etc… but easily hide it all pressing BACK.

    I have a Fujifilm XT4, a Fujifilm 23 mm f1.4 (35mm equivalent), and a variable ND filter. Should I in theory be able to take the exact same kind of photos as the x100v, or is there something else that makes the x100v’s images unique? I’m talking strictly in terms of image quality. I ask because I don’t want to drop another $2k+ if I don’t have to!

    I've wanted to save and upgrade to this camera from my Nikon D3500, this is such a good video!
    Also wondering, any good overall lenses you'd recommend on a budget for the D3500? I'm rocking a 35mm 1.8f and the 18-55mm kit lens

      Stick with the 35mm until you can afford a new camera

    I also find that using OVF over the EVF, makes it easier for those who wear glasses.

      that makes no sense lmao the EVF means no glasses hitting the camera .

      The lines on the EVF are harder to see the borders, where the OVF I can see the borders quite clearly. For someone who wears glasses they will understand this.

      OVF shooter only as well. Really helps with battery live. If I really need a love view it’s easy to change to evf or just use back screen

    Hello! I just discovered your channel and I have been just watching a bunch of your videos and kinda decided to comment on the most recent one in hopes of a reply (probably wont happen). I am trying to start something creative and was thinking maybe photography could be something cool. It would help me go to places because there would be a reason for it, take photos. But i am a completely beginner and don'r really know where to start. The problem is actually there are away too much stuff going around and sometimes is not good. I was wondering if you any suggestions on where to start, what camera could be interesting as a first camera, and then how to use it and take better photos? Thank you and I love the channel!

    if I lock the Exp Comp dial, is there is a quick way to unlock it if required? Don't like the idea that, if I need it at a pinch, I need to navigate multiple menu options to re-enable it.

      Ive been looking for a new X100F somewhere near list price for two years now. I saw a new one pop up on Amazon yesterday for $1399 and wanted to buy it. Before I could do so it was gone and they asked me if I wanted to buy a reconditioned one for $2399 instead! 😭

      Don’t get crazy for it. It’s just a camera. People are pretty silly paying this kind of money for 2 years old item. Must be this Leica look.
