I found your videos by searching sciatica and looking for possible relief. I was impressed that you don't give recipes but explain the science behind what you're talking about and building a context for your suggestions. I started with the things not to do first. I had been using heat and had exactly the response you described. Very quick relief followed a short while later by even more intense pain. I went back and started going through the sciatica series. One of the first exercises was the slump and lift of leg. I haven't stretched as much as I should so there was some discomfort from stretching. However, I don't think I have sciatica. Lower back pain is on the right side and pain will radiate to my right leg but the intensity of pain is in the front of my leg and around the knee cap, not the back. Any suggestions on where I should look for behavioral solutions? A lifetime ago I was a massage therapist which is like a PT (very) light. Your information has been in sync with what I remember and the simple changes of going to ice rather than heat and then making sure movements are as natural as possible have given me real relief. Thanks!
I just found you researching sciatica, you are spot on with what’s going on with me. Thank you for your videos!! Thank you for all your helpful advice!
My mom is 77 and has been dealing with sciatica pain going on 3 weeks now. Whenever she gets up and moves around she feels worse. Listening to your videos I gather that she should stretch the opposite side and ice every hour? Also abdominal strengthing?
Hi, the pain I have is on the outer side of my thigh and side of my lower leg. It is less painful now , but now I have numbness on my foot. U say it is not sciatica, then what could it be?
Rest has been crucial for me. Especially when the nerve is hot. It’s tricky though because you can’t go from rest to no rest but you have to taper it off slowly. Ice works great too. I’ve tried to ice more often but it doesn’t do much. Best to do 5 minutes once/hour as you said & then don’t stop but again taper off. So grateful to have a formula for healing ♥️
I recently had an MRI, and was diagnosed with sciatica. However my pain is in the front and outside of the left thigh, and it is excruciating upon standing up. I cannot stand without pushing myself up with my arms and having to hold on to something. Once I take a few painful steps it eases somewhat. This has been ongoing for at least a year. I’m doing the exercises, and I do cardio in the pool at the ymca three times a week. Once I’m in the pool and moving around there is no pain until I have to climb the ladder to get out of the pool. I avoid stairs as much as possible. My fear is falling. At my age (68) that is very scary. Any advice?
Good job keeping up with the cardio exercises at the YMCA 3 times per week! Since you had an MRI, what does the doctor say about the fact that your pain has not improved in 1 year?
I have thigh pain about four month and deep hio joint pain whenever m loyghing coughing aur turn back.now as per MRI says L5 S1 issue nd will be ok after surgry.what I do?plz help me on 1st july dr give me the date of surgery.
You're absolutely right I watched somebody on a video that told me I should stretch at least six times a day in a door jamb area or on a pull-up bar and I did that needless to say that night I did not sleep a wink it was excruciatingly painful
Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s important to know the limits of our bodies. I hope you find a stretching routine that works for you without the sleepless nights!
I have started PT and he says the back includes side of calf. I have pain now going down to my angle now. Which means if pain is in side calf is sicatic nerve? John
@@PT4Everybody thanks it worked last night. Do you know know why I now getting pain in my thigh as well as down side of my calf albeit on the same side. By the way I have stopped stretching too
Hi ma'am good day please help me I don't know now how to do I have so much in pain and not totally able to walk cause I'm in pain ni my left bikini area, left lower back down to my leg to my knees.start in pain last feb this year until now I have taking many medicines,Unger go therapy but still pain is still in there
Is it sciatica if i only feel pain in the higher part of the glute? And its extremely painful when im sitting and try to touch my foot. But only in that area. Maybe also close to the column.
Could be sciatica but in that area there may be another issue. I would recommend consulting with a Manual Physical Therapist to understand more about what's going on with your body!
I had hamstring injury near my knee 4 months ago and after 2-3 weeks of injury i started feeling pins and needles and shooting sharp pain behind my knee sometimes in my foot the pain was felt , i was immobilised initially for 3-4 weeks and was on bed with almost no movement in a brace due to misdiagnosis as ligament injury after that till now not able to walk have the same pain can’t straighten my leg and walk on it im so fed up plz help, even my calf got atrphied badly during that period now working on calf recently but what has caused my pain? It is behind knee sometimes im foot cant walk on straight leg or dorsiflex foot while leg straight help plz im so tired
I am so sorry! That is a rough story! It does sound like the pins and needles are being caused by the sciatic nerve based on your history. Wishing you the best in your recovery!
My pain is not exactly as you describe for sciatica; mine goes down the butt; really bad, to the sides of the thigh & calf; both legs but worse on one. Mine hurts when I touch it. So painful I cannot walk correctly
@@PT4Everybody I guess that is the hard part; figuring out what I have & if I can ever get better. I’ve been dealing with this in escalating fashion for almost 2 years.
How can one distinguish between piriformis syndrome and ischial bursitis? My pain is sharp and intense, shooting down the back of my leg. It originates right at the base of the buttocks.
Everything you say has been my personal experience. You’re the best internet PT!
Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to me that my content is relatable to you.

Wish I found this first. Stretched and ended up crippled up. Finally getting better, but just now icing.
Hi! Where should the ice be put on the back, the lumbar area or on the place of pain, on the back of the leg?
You want to put the ice where you have the pain
Mam,i feel better after stretching my painful sciatica affected leg.its a chronic sciatica. Hit also make me better.should i follow ice pack then?
That would be great to use ice!
Is bursitis and sciatica pain the same thing?
Thank you for the wonderful video
Bursits and sciatica are different problems...but can occur together! I have a hip bursitis video coming soon!
My pain is from right low back to front and side of leg,, but mostly front of right leg. What do you do for that?
I am realizing from your comment that I need to make a video about pain that goes down the FRONT of the leg. It's coming soon!
@@PT4Everybody Me too. Sciatica from low back is better but now it’s in the front started at the joint in front of hip.
Thank you for this clear and well delivered information!
Thank you this is very helpful information

Start with ice and stretching the opposite side. When things calm down try to walk around for 5 minutes every hour.

It is hard to discern from so far away but a second opinion from a Specialist Physical Therapist would be helpful.
Thanx
Thank you😊
Your gratitude means the world to us, thank you for being part of our community.
I would like to ice. Where should I place the ice pack?
The ice pack should be placed where you feel the pain. You may need to "chase" the pain down your leg if there's multiple pain points.

I have had pain on side of calf and side of thigh. Is this sciatica or what is it
Most likely a different nerve than the sciatic nerve. I will make a video for you!
I have started PT and he says the back includes side of calf. I have pain now going down to my angle now. Which means if pain is in side calf is sicatic nerve? John
Where do we ice though? If your pain is in glute?
Ice where the pain is. If it travels, feel free to "chase" it with an ice pack to help relieve pain symptoms.
Should I be going cycling while I have a sciatica flareup?
You should test it out. Try going for a short ride and see how you feel afterwards and how you sleep that night. If you feel better than keep going!
Do I ice where the pain is or my back. I am getting pain in my groin and side of calf thanks
Since ice is a pain reliever, I tell my people to ice where it hurts!

How can i get thè pain to go away which part must i lay on to get ralive
Use the ice pack on the area that produces the most pain

what about the inside of the thigh with numbness? Can't walk forward.

What is the root cause? Been dealing with this pain 4 yrs so so tired of it.

I stretched the figure4 while sitting down and it just killed my buttocks and my sciatic

so only ice is your solution to sciatica. odd.
Ice is very painful at relieving sciatica in the short term so you can implement some gentle motion
