I actually dislike how he talks about his finger placement, looking at his hand is faster for me or just a tab would have been enough, then just focus on the right hand pattern which is what I have difficulty at, that would be a lot better imo
Man! its so cool to come back to these videos knowing I was waiting for your uploads every week! thank you for all your lessons over the years, could basically call you my personal teacher
So simple. Can't believe this song is only 5 chords. Been playing for 20 years and in my teens I always remembered seeing an alternate tuning in tabs which made me never play it. The 20 year mystery is solved! Easy song to play for a solid intermediate.
Great video! If the shifts are giving you trouble, an easier version can be played on the first couple frets. This is less strain on your left hand and is easier to play without looking, so you can add vocals! :) Em | Em7 | Cmaj7 | A7add9 (no 3) (just D string fret 2) Cmaj7 | A7 (D and B strings, fret 2) The Cmaj7 is A string fret 3, D string fret 2. Don't play the low E.
Just roll with it. It's the same way that I learn. I'll work it out and then hit the tough parts the next day for 15 mins. After a couple of days the new chord or difficult changes are committed to muscle memory.
Hi guys, if like me you're really struggling with the transition from the em7 to the second chord of the progression (fat fingers and age slowing me down 😩) or it's just a buzzy mess when you get there, you can move the whole thing down the fretboard to an open D position. The only difference is instead of fretting the A note on the third string, you fret the E note on the fourth string and use the tip of your finger to mute the open A above it. You do lose the ring of the open E on the first string but hey, small price to pay to be able to play the song and have it sound half good I think 😊. Thanks Carl, great tutorial
I like all of your lessons. I’ve been playing guitar for about 40 years. On the record I think he goes to a third chord in the chorus. It just doesn’t seem to jive with the original recording. Correct me if I’m wrong. Once again, thanks for your work!
this song hits so fucking hard, man. been looking up and down for a good tutorial. i need to get it down and get it out of my system. thanks, man. finally a version that sounds right.
I have been playing the guitar forever, thanks for showing me the way of this song. I can sing it like it is. And now with your help, I can now entertain my friends with Incubus and drive. They love it OMG.
Carl you made it look really easy, especially when the chord transitions are so quick. My guess, it took 20+ years to make it look that easy? Thx Great lesson.
Go from one chord to the other starting slowly and then speed it up past until you past the tempo of the song, easiest way to master chord transitions, it took me a while to go from the 2nd chord to the third
Just get the low notes of the chord shape down and bring your 3rd and 4th fingers to the higher strings as your strumming through your low strings. Buys you a little time in between your chord changes, that way you can fret the higher notes of the chord by the time you need to strum them out. That’s how I learned to do it
Storm Silagy it’s pretty simple.. I started to tech myself to play in my teens in late 90s to early 2000s and going to my local mom and pops music store I remember buying the bleach tab book with all the nirvana songs from bleach an Love Buzz & School & Big Cheese were the first 3 songs I learned bc I already knew how to play about a girl bc of watching Kurt play it live over an over on unplugged lol I wore that vhs recording out for sure 😂 😂 man good times an eventually learned the rest of bleach and then bought all the other tab books for Nirvana all 4 albums and also had tab books for Muddy banks and Unplugged bc Musdy banks i bought that strictly to learn Spank Thru an still love playing that song as time went on I was able to play by ear so when the box set came out in 04 do re mi was the first song I made myself learn and old age and verse chorus verse and many more also love playing dive an that’s a easy song to learn.. also Sappy is fun once you get the solo down.. My top favorite Kurt Cobain solos to play are the solos from serve the servants, School, spank thru and sappy
Nice tut. However I missed two things here: #1 The names of the chords ya playing. They are *Em* , *Em7/9* , *Cmaj7* , *Am7* ; and *Cmaj7* , *A7* . About the *1st chord* the *Em* : the open G and E String are just chordtones of em (the V und root) About of the *2st chord* the *Em7/9* , that's a 5 tones chord but about ya only grabbing 4 strings. Well thats since ya leave out the V. Nice chord I like that one. In another context (don't apply it to drive) try to slide in that one, followed by this A7(5456xx). #2 Just focus once on that *melody line* that comes up when ya playing the chords in the way(voicing) as shown in the video. [general side note: that the 'melody' is drawn by the highest tone in the chord.] It goes like *G, F#, E, C* . So spoken in tabs it's: Em .........xxx x8x; Em7/9 ...xxx x7x; Cmaj7 ...xxx x5x; Am7 ......xxx 5xx; #3 (okay I don't miss the following in the video, however if ya add 1 and 2 together you might end up here) Applying these two enables ya to create slight variations. Like these: Em - 022 003; Em7/9 - 020 002; Cmaj7 - x32 000; Am7 - x02 01x; Some 'easier' chords nearly same voicing, but somehow from its sound colour is leaking from that great dynamic that is brought in by the higher fret notes (strong attack, quick decay) combined with the open strings (smooth, slower decay) OR Variation B: Em.........005 403; (more rooty sound since that double B [V] in there) Em7/9...005 003; Cmaj7....x32 300; (nicer in combination with A7) Am7.......505 500; You liked that comment - vote for it. (So it'll stay up)
Hey carl! could you do a lesson of some music by Trans-Siberian Orchestra? They're one of my favorite bands and I love them so much. If you could do a lesson of The Mountain by them that would be awesome!
I'd say it is not beginner friendly, yeah those who like to show off to the comment section might say its not bad but as a beginner myself, I cant even get my fingers arranged for the first chord. Definitely gonna have to table this one for a while
1:20 no barre chords so its easy i must be the only guy who can play barre chords perfectly but am having nightmares transitioning between these chords great lesson though 😅
If someone would help, after I play the first one or two notes of the chord and begin to strum, do I include the strings I just hit or leave them out of the strum, for example to start is it E high A7 Strum E high, A7, D9, G, B8 Or is it E high A7 Strum D9,G,B8 Thank you!
Lmao back in the day I used to try and play this song (and many others) one note at a time and it was so hard. Luckily my fingers are stretched from playing other songs so that isn’t too difficult. But now I have to get the strumming pattern down as I switch chords.
You have a great method for teaching... the 3-way split screen... and your information delivery - you ROCK! Thank you!
I actually dislike how he talks about his finger placement, looking at his hand is faster for me or just a tab would have been enough, then just focus on the right hand pattern which is what I have difficulty at, that would be a lot better imo
@@BankruptGreek I agree
@@braydenowsley121 after all these years.. I finally get closure knowing somebody shares my opinion on the 3-way split screen.

3 years after posting ~ and I just found this lesson. Thanks very much ~ all because of YOU - I learned how to play this song - in WARP speed.
So simple. Can't believe this song is only 5 chords.

The Cmaj7 is A string fret 3, D string fret 2. Don't play the low E.
Amazing, Love Incubus, please do more songs from them
Always weird how first a song looks impossible to play and then 2 days later it seems real easy to play
ahahah - Day one - I quit on the 2nd chord
:) Day two in the morning - Able to do first 3 chords ...very very slow
Just roll with it. It's the same way that I learn. I'll work it out and then hit the tough parts the next day for 15 mins. After a couple of days the new chord or difficult changes are committed to muscle memory.
@@mortesanta4924 I usually am able to play all of it decently after an hour but I’m relentless and just piss myself off till I figure it out
@@connorhicks6938 my ring finger keeps on muting out the G string it’s so annoying
His method of teaching is awesome he takes the time to show you exactly what's going on the best teacher I've ran across!!

OR Variation B:
Em.........005 403; (more rooty sound since that double B [V] in there)
