In all my years learning to play guitar I can confidently state that Den is easily the best guitar tutor out there. Simplification, clarification. precision & no ego trips. There is nothing more maddening when you're using tutorials online than coming across those regular tutors who wants to show off & demonstrate just how great they are on guitar & how they became so proficient by confusing you with all their complex references & mind blowing, over complicated approach to scales, minor, major, pentatonic, Aeolian, mixolydian etc etc as opposed to breaking things down in to their basic form so that you can easily understand & follow them & ultimately learn, grow & become a much better guitarist . Den is simply the best teacher out there & I highly recommend his tutorials on all aspects of guitar playing to any budding guitarists. This lesson here, that explains the CAGED system in its simplest format is testament to that. Keep up the good work Den. You're a top man.
I'm 71 and have been trying to play for a little over 2 years. This was the BEST, most understandable explanation I have ever experienced. Thanks Den!!!
If there was a Novel Prize for explaining the CAGED system in the most simple and best way, this guys would have won the Nobel Prize!!! I can read sheet music and play classical fluently but somehow CAGED system always eluded me, this is the only video on the planet when it’s explained in the best, systematic and logical way that actually makes sense 🙏
Straight to the point no beating around the bush. Most other tutor make SIMPLE THING complicated. Open chords are simply barred by the nuts except B and F have to be barred by fingers but are hostages of the CAGED. I have to subscribe you, my humble tutor.
We must have been watching at the same time. I have played off and on for 7 years. Every time I tried to learn the caged system my mind would either get cluttered with a bunch of mumbo jumbo, then I would get bored (not learning, anything wasting time) and quit the video. Thanks for the excellent video. I have got it now and will never forget it.
An absolutely brilliant lesson, you are an angel. I am 79. 😢. You just got me out of the CAGED. I was locked in. Now i understand what was that all about. Thanks a lot man.
This is by far the best explanation of CAGED I have ever saw and I have watched a few. I have absolutely zero questions and I am confident I have fully comprehended how to play chords using CAGED. Great lesson!
You're pretty much what I've been looking for my whole life. So tired of teachers who bombard you with terminology, often redundant, terminology, and showing off and acting as if they were speaking to their peers instead of those who actually know less. Well done.
My goodness! FINALLY, someone actually can provide a simplified explanation of the caged system! At least one that I can understand it. Thank you Sir!!!!!
I’ve watched hours of caged videos trying to make it make sense and 9 minutes into yours has done more than all the others combined. Definitely following for more! Thank you
This is excellent. I had already given up on the CAGED system, BUT YOU GAVE ME HOPE! I'll have to go over it a few more times but it will be worth my time. Bravo!
This is THE BEST, most understandable explanation of the caged system I have ever encountered. Been playing for 50 years so I understood the caged system, but when I first started, I pulled my hair out trying to understand how to use the caged system. This is tremendously helpful to guitar players of all levels. Thank You for this.
Thank you very much for that simple and elegant presentation of the CAGED system. I have been trying to understand it for 4 years, but no luck until tonight. Excellent work Den. Keep up the fantastic lessons. Dave from Nova Scotia, Canada
I'm never around anyone and I've used RUclips to teach myself how to play guitar and one of my questions has been how do I play different chords all across the fret board. This has helped me more than any other video I've found. Thank you for making It simple. Most people that teach just like to show how good they are and that leaves me thinking I can't do It but you showed me I can.. Thanks a million.
The best CAGED lesson ever has been shown by tutor Den. Amazingly clear form with very simple explanation. I recommend everyone to watch this video if you are having a problem with CAGED forms or shapes!
I've been trying hard to understand the CAGED SYSTEM for a while and hadn't really got a good grasp of it UNTIL NOW. YOU EXPLAINED it where It finally clicked. THANKS A MILLION!
mind blown! that was the best explanation of cage!! I fully understand it after something like 15 years of trying to figure it out then walking away from it thank you so so much great instruction
I never learned via CAGED, and I don't like how a lot of people teach music theory, either. I just learned a ton of chords and songs, and got into chord voicings that are reduced parts of the good old 5 'cowboy chord' shapes around the fretboard. But I have a geometrically oriented mind: I recognize forms and shapes in different contexts. As for music theory, what finally set me on bigger paths was realizing: you need lab courses to go along with your lecture courses. We need to apply the academic learning as soon as possible. Good luck with the channel. People seem to like it.
It took me 60% of this lesson to figure out these (the caged system) are what was called 'movable chords' back 40 years ago. I do this all the time, but I never heard this term till recently, so I came to see what all the confusion was about. Thank goodness for this teacher. It was very understandable.
I already knew most of what you explained about CAGED, but I had thought that the arrangement of the letters was just because it spelled something you could pronounce and remember; I had no idea that the sequence of the letters was meaningful. Thanks for that! 🙂
Wow, in almost 40 years of struggling to learn the guitar, giving up and starting again, this is really an amazingly simple eye opening concept. Thank you sir!
These RUclips guitar teachers are gonna put a contract/hit on you! They tortured and confused us 60 and over beginners for years! Thank you Thank you! I just subscribed! Again thank you
Thank you Den!! Adds so much clarity to The Beginner Guitar Playbook you wrote. I've never been able to listen to other videos for more than five minutes with out being completely lost.. This was clear as a bell and will aid in my progress.
Probably the best explanation I’ve seen. Still leaves me with a feed Qs…. 1. When or why would you play chords like that? They seem a nightmare to finger 2. How would you get quicker at finding those chords on the fretboards? I guess you need to know your fretboard notes first right? Superb vid though, thank you 😊
Thank you for your questions! 1. You can break up those shapes into smaller chinks that are easier to fret 2. I use the intervals (notes that create each chord) to know where those shapes are. I'll record a video on that too👍
My favorite class in high school was music theory. It helped me understand how music is constructed. That know-how has guided me for the last 56 years to an incredibly rich understanding and enjoyment of all kinds of music. Now at age 72 I am learning finger style guitar picking and that solid base in music theory is guiding my finger style technique. Your explanation of CAGED is superb, simple, and your demo was clear and concise. It opens doors to playing better guitar. Thanks so much for creating this video. I'm a fan.
Outstanding explanation of the caged system, simple explanation for this student of the guitar to understand.Cut through the smoke and mirrors associated with sometimes confusing presentations of the past one has indured.
FINALLY! I have seen so many videos on this subject and was lucky if I came away with some partial glimmer of understanding. This is absolutely the best and clearest explanation I have ever watched. A sincere thank you!
GREAT , GREAT EXPLANATION of this system. This is the very 1st time I watched any video concerning the CAGED SYSTEM. I remember the material easily because YOU did such a wonderful job explaining it. You are indeed a gifted communicator of material and you obviously made certain that you knew this material thoroughly. Well done.
Thanks, it's very clear now, and your explanation is great. But I still don't understand what this system is intended for. It's just for remembering position of chords ?
I think the word "system" is what causes so many problems. It is not a system. It's just how the fretboard is layed out. You can play any chord using different shapes all across the fretboard. Every shape in different positions is going to sound a little different. This is very useful if you're playing with someone else so you don't sound exactly the same. It's also helpful to visualize you triads, scale shapes, intervals...(more advanced)👍
Once again no one every explained the CAGED Shapes so clearly as you did. It clarifies to me how CAGED System funtions. Above all you showed so nicely how the chords look like. I admit that I have moved one step ahead with your lesson. Your are truely a good teacher.
I was able to understand the CAGED system by watching many videos and it took time. Your video was able pull off the essence of it in 17 minutes. Very well communicated. Thanks. Had I seen this video as the first video, I would have saved a lot of time.
Good question. You can play chord progression with different voicings across the fretboard. This also lets you find any chord you're looking for. For example, if you're looking for a C#, you can move any of those shapes to find it. There are many other things not mentioned in the video, like finding triads, scale shapes, and more. This is just an introduction to the concept👍
From a technical PoV, it’s a great way to learn the fretboard. It kinda falls into your lap after a while, without deliberately memorising scales or separated notes. But once you start writing, or even just playing covers, the same chord notes have a very different feel based on where they are played. And by using versions of chords that share notes between the previous and next chord, the fluidity of playing can move to a new level. Ultimately it’s a freedom that can take you away from the same old chord shapes and the feel of chords in their, let’s say, definitive, basic first position state. Or even the basic E and A form barré chords. One thing it took me ages to get my head around is scales and harmonies (chords) are contingent. What sounds good, is good. Most people reach a stage where the ‘rules’ are fairly well known and then they plateau. Just the fact of looking at something from a different angle gives insight and makes connections visible that may have been hidden and it’s recently given me the confidence to strike out into the unknown. Still simple, as that’s the music I like but with occasional deceptively complex twists and harmonic garnishes. I’d been playing for 30 years, mostly self taught, more than good enough to do what I wanted to do with middling success first as a one-hit wonder band member and then engineer and producer back when record company studios were a thing. But more recently I’ve been playing for myself and looking at what beginners are now taught (it’s very different) and the whole CAGED thing and especially triads, have opened up my songwriting. I was using these ideas without knowing what they were but once I was shown that they can be a paradigm, a way of looking at the fretboard, new ideas came tumbling out. It would have taken me ages to stumble on a progression, arpeggio shape or scale at one time but in the last year this has streamlined everything.
This is as perfect as most an explanations of the CAGED system that is great for beginning students to the guitar. I say well done for taking the time to distil the information in this way. Over the years I have read books and watched other videos on RUclips and have felt some explanations were either slightly complicated or not simplistic enough to fully grasp in one viewing. This video profoundly solves all of that making it ever so clear.
Omg! I’m new to learning guitar and have genuinely felt overwhelmed looking at chords. I have a trainer that brings me through the multiple ways to play each and I thought, “How the heck am I supposed to memorize all of this randomness?” This one video just made the progression make total sense. Memorizing this concept will be MUCH easier than what I thought I was going to have to do.
I knew this about caged system but enjoyed watching you teach this clearly and it helped a lot of fellow guitarists. Next is to show the pentatonic scale patterns that go with each shape. Good stuff! Subbed.
best video on caged ever...i have been watching caged videos for a long time but always got lost and gave up.. i watched all of your video and actually learned something that made sense to me...thank you...nice job..structured so most people can relate and do....
Such a clear and concise .... and probably the best lesson I have viewed on the subject of the CAGED system. You sir, are a very efficient and talented teacher. Thank-you so much!!!
I learned something new about the CAGED system (I know about the using cord shapes), the sequence of the letters (caged) shows which shape is next up the board for the same cord.
So glad I discovered Den, have just took up guitar in my late fifties as a hobby. This guys simple but concise way of explaining things is really easy to follow, compared to most other RUclips guitar tutors ive watched. Thanks Den, you've got another subscriber 👍
I have heard the CAGED system for ever it seems and could never get my head around it. By far the best video explanation! Makes total sense now. Great video.
I have to agree with all of the comments. I’ve been playing guitar a very long time and learned CAGED the hard way, which demonstrates what we already intuitively know: a good teacher makes all the difference. Hence if you can’t seem to understand something within a reasonable amount of time don’t conclude that you are slow… find another teacher! Well done Den.
Thank you so much, Jack!!! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and your comment too! It reminded me of something I heard that changed my perspective also: "If your doctor tells you you're going to die in a month, what is the only thing you can do? Find another doctor!"
I already know all of this, but I still have to say that this is literally the simplest and probably most effective explanation of a CAGED system for beginners that I have ever heard. Well done.
For me, this was a wonderful explanation of the CAGED system. Working with what was said and knowing the basic chord shapes is a gateway to understanding where to find chords and what shapes to use. Bravo!
That is the first time I have stayed tuned in to a CAGED system video. I understood it for the first time too. Well done and thanks heaps, that was enjoyable.
GET THIS BOOK. I know you have to sign up and your going to offers for his other courses, BUT it is so helpful. If you are a beginner you need this book.
Hello LGS the G shape can be divided to make comfortable to play EBGD strings of the shape. And just use DAE for Notes Arpeggios Triads etc Great explanation good Luck.
I've been playing guitar as a hobby since 1978. I was 15 and never heard of this CAGED system. This man just destroyed every cord book I've ever bought 😳 Excellent lesson gratitude
Thank you. This makes sense finally. What would make this presentation PERFECT, is a diagram of the 5 shapes in a row for comparison, for beginners. Either at the beginning or end. It's little hard to see where your fingers are placed.
The last 2 minutes were worth watching the rest. I have watched Molly Millers video repeatedly and finally seeing how the root notes connect the shapes ( with the barre ) But never understood how to use for other keys- starting with a chord other than the C chord. Thank you. 😊
I started learning to play guitar on my 50th birthday. Self-taught using the Rocksmith XBOX video game and guitar You Tube (YT) videos. Very slow but I never gave up and still playing today (10 years later). I have seen so many YT videos about the caged system and never got it until today watching your video. The way you brought it across was very understandable for someone like me. It's funny how all of sudden things click with this mad world of learning to play Guitar. Great video, Thanks for making/posting it. New subscriber, notifications turned on and liked the video. Hope it helps.
Congratulations on pushing through! So many people quit it's a disaster. So happy this video finally made it all click! Now that you know the concept of shapes, it applies to everything. You can move anything around!
Very helpful info, thank you. One thing that you may want to consider, is that there is an open F shape. First finger on E and B strings first fret; second finger G string second fret; and third finger D string third fret.

Well Said Buddy!!!! Wellllllllll Said!!!!
100% agree. I played for 45 years and still learned something.
Damnit man... You STOLE my thunder... er... I mean... You took the words RIGHT outta my mouth 😂
First CAGED book/lesson that hasn’t had my brain in meltdown. Thanks
Yeiiiii! So happy to hear this clicked, Tom❤️
I can honestly say this is THE best explanation of CAGED that I’ve come across thank you.
Thank you so much! So happy you liked it🤗

I'm so happy this has helped you, Gary! Thank you for watching and for your beautiful comment.
Excellent understandable explanation
Shapes! Finally an explanation that fits what my brain has done all along. Now I have to master the index finger barre. Thank you!

Been playing since 6th grade. I'm 53. Clearest most concise explanations I've seen. Excellent, simple explanations.
I appreciate this, Bruce❤️ Thank you! 🙏
Hands down, the simplest explanation of "CAGED" I have ever seen. Great job!
We must have been watching at the same time. I have played off and on for 7 years. Thanks for the excellent video. I have got it now and will never forget it.
Fantastic! Thank you so much for both your comments! They mean a lot❤️
Thank you!!! ❤️
I never realised that CAGED gave the order of the shapes needed as you move your chosen chord up the neck. Thanks for the lesson
That was new for me too. So important to know!!
Very clear.....shockingly easy to understand when this is explained on a simple drawing board instead of just stating the theory......GREAT TUTOR!
I'm so happy you found this helpful, Kevin! thank you for taking the time to drop a comment. It means a lot.

25 years indo guitar and I like listening to basics to check how people approch teaching. This is very very good and spot on. Congrats
Thank you so much!! I appreciate your feedback😃
Wow, your comment made my day, Simon! Thank you so much! 🙏
So glad to hear this!!! It took me years to understand it and apply it. Happy to know it's going to shorten your journey😍
I just saved this to my beginner guitar playlist. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this and your other tutorials.
I watched many videos to make sense of the CAGED system. You explained it in ten minutes! You are a genius.
So happy this helped you, Sara 🎉 Thank you so much for your kind words🤗
I knew this about caged system but enjoyed watching you teach this clearly and it helped a lot of fellow guitarists. Next is to show the pentatonic scale patterns that go with each shape. Good stuff! Subbed.
Yes! You are exactly right💪 Once you can associate each scale pattern to a chord shape you're absolutely rockin'!!
best video on caged ever...i have been watching caged videos for a long time but always got lost and gave up.. i watched all of your video and actually learned something that made sense to me...thank you...nice job..structured so most people can relate and do....
So happy to hear this video made sense! I appreciate your comment❤️
Such a clear and concise .... and probably the best lesson I have viewed on the subject of the CAGED system.
You sir, are a very efficient and talented teacher.
Thank-you so much!!!
sir..u r absolutely amazing....ive listened to a lot of caged teachings..
but only understand it now..
thank u
I'm so happy this finally clicked! Thank you so much for your comment, Bradley❤️
Thank you for making this make sense to me. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
I appreciate your comment, Wesley! So happy to hear this made sense to you. It took me so long to understand😃
I learned something new about the CAGED system (I know about the using cord shapes), the sequence of the letters (caged) shows which shape is next up the board for the same cord.
Yes! Exactly! 💪
So glad I discovered Den, have just took up guitar in my late fifties as a hobby. This guys simple but concise way of explaining things is really easy to follow, compared to most other RUclips guitar tutors ive watched. Thanks Den, you've got another subscriber 👍
Aw man, this really means a lot. I appreciate you taking the time to write this, Jason❤️
I have heard the CAGED system for ever it seems and could never get my head around it. By far the best video explanation! Makes total sense now. Great video.
Wohhooooo! Let's go! So happy to hear this video helped you❤️
Fantastic, never has this been explained to me this easy in 30 years...
Man you break this down so simply. I always tried to play higher up the neck like the professionals do. Now I know. Thanks a lot.
Wow you made it so simple to understand! Thats the hallmark of a great teacher, well done.
Outstanding explanation! You gave a clear concise synopsis of C A G E D without making me feel less than capable.
Thank you! Love the way you teach.
I am so grateful for your comment, Paul. Thank you for making my day!
Well done.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment😍
For me, this was a wonderful explanation of the CAGED system. Working with what was said and knowing the basic chord shapes is a gateway to understanding where to find chords and what shapes to use. Bravo!
Thank you so much! I appreciate your comment very much🤗
So simply and very understandably explained. This CAGED system often intrigues so many guitar players. Job well done..👍
Thank you!
That is the first time I have stayed tuned in to a CAGED system video. I understood it for the first time too. Well done and thanks heaps, that was enjoyable.
So happy this worked for you, Don💪 Moving forward!!!
That was excellent, now I just need to watch it a few more times, and maybe my old brain might maintain this great explanation. Thanks
thank you so much, Steve!
been playing over 50 years, great video... its always good to look at things from all angles, great angle!!
Thank you, John! I appreciate it😃
Best teacher ever! Simple and direct! Thank you, Sir. Liked! Subscribed!
I never realized this was the sequence of shapes.
Very helpful!
Awesome, Paul! So happy you got that breakthrough💪
I’m subscribing solely off this one video this is literally maybe the perfect way to explain the caged system I thank you
Thank you so much for your support! It means a lot
Hi, Michael. Yes of course! Of all them can be broken down💪 Thank you for sharing😊
The best explanation of the CAGED system I have seen. And I’ve watched a lot of videos on it. Thank you!
I'm so happy you found this lesson so helpful!!! Thank you for your comment🤩
Absolutely a great tutorial that truly gives an understanding of the CAGED and its related shapes. Thank you
I've been playing guitar as a hobby since 1978. I was 15 and never heard of this CAGED system. This man just destroyed every cord book I've ever bought 😳 Excellent lesson gratitude
Thank you so much for your comment❤️ can you please shoot me an email? I've got something I want to show you👍
Brother, i was so intimidated by this system but you made it super easy to understand, thank you a thousand times.
Thank.
Thank You Den , that is the first time I was able to sit through and understand the caged system. You are a wonderful teacher!
So happy to hear this worked for you🤗 I really appreciate your comment❤️
Thank you. This makes sense finally. What would make this presentation PERFECT, is a diagram of the 5 shapes in a row for comparison, for beginners. Either at the beginning or end. It's little hard to see where your fingers are placed.
A brilliant video. First time I've understood the CAGED System. Well Done. Paul Lucas.
This is fantastic, Paul! So happy to hear it clicked💪
The best explanation of caged and how it works. Easiest to understand that I’ve seen! Very awesome!
Thank you!!!
The last 2 minutes were worth watching the rest. I have watched Molly Millers video repeatedly and finally seeing how the root notes connect the shapes ( with the barre ) But never understood how to use for other keys- starting with a chord other than the C chord. Thank you. 😊
So happy this video added value to Molly's🤗 and that it brought everything together💪
This is the best and only explanation I have actually understood. Thank you so much!
Thank you! I think there are no open strings there, right? Doesn't that come from the E shape? Just playing fewer strings?
Outstanding. You have earned yourself a special place in guitar Heaven.
Thank you so much for this❤️
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, for sharing this knowledge - it has made sense of so many videos that didn’t explain this as clearly as you have.
AWESOME!!!! I'm so happy for you! thank you so much for your comment. It means a lot❤️
