TURBOCHARGING the New Subaru BRZ is Shockingly Impressive

  • The Subaru BRZ and the Toyota GR86 are some of my favorite cars on my the market today. With it's 2.4L engine it fixed a lot of issues that I had with the last generation of cars. This 2022 Subaru BRZ we are driving today has a widebody and also a first for me - a turbo kit. I have a ton of seat time in the new GR86 and Toyota BRZ, but I have yet to drive a boosted one. So today we ask the question - is it worth boosted the new Subaru BRZ? Let's talk about it.

      @@Gearbhall Now hold on a second they're perfectly fine motors. The issue you're talking about only affected 1% of owners with GR86s who tracked their car and experienced it on long, fast, high grip right hand turns, then couldn't get Toyota of America to honor the warranty immediately, until enough public outcry made Toyota change their mind.
      Basically, it's a very very very specific set of conditions. Subaru on the other hand will honor the warranty *IF* something where to happen to your car. The issue does exist, it's still there, but the chances of you getting a blown engine is lower than winning the lottery. You're robbing yourself from an incredible car because half a dozen people had problems out of thousands. If you're worried about your warranty not being honored, just get the BRZ. If you don't track your car, you're also completely fine. But many people have tracked the twins and have had no issues whatsoever. If these cars blew up constantly, we'd hear about it all the time. You should recommend this platform. There is no need for fearmongering. But what do I know, it's not like I have owned a ZD8 BRZ since January and have had not a single problem with it mechanically.

The GT86-BRZ has a lower center of gravity than a Porsche 911 GT3 and even some Ferrari models. The engine is below the Heigh of the top front tire, you can't Mount a tubo without the engine going up or very long exhaust pipe so the turbo will be higher than the engine; Long turbo exhaust pipe=Turbo lag. Adding a turbo will add alot of cost -> ex: the turbo, intercooler, bigger fuel system/brake/Tanss/Diff etc. and oh wait something else that everyone also forget: Weight ! At 2800lbs it's light and fast in corner, it make more than 100HP per liter's for a N/A engine that's some of the most advance engine for the street. I'm sure the price will go up for the best one who keep it pretty original in the future when every car will be silent electric, terribly heavy cat... because I can't believe they don't sell more of them, still a success story but they didn't make history like the first Mustang as they should. They're okay for duty use (in factory form) so long as it doesn't starve of oil and seize up. Just not the stout piece that other engines are, which have been tuned to north of 1,000 hp in some cases.

      A standard I4 would raise the center of gravity though and the GR86 tried to get it as low as possible.

    Yeah, this ain't "OEM+" (and that's a good thing), but great job on installing the widebody correctly and not going with the whole half assed 'drift look'. Slapped on kits with exposed rivets is not a look people. Stop purposely making your cars look like drift pigs.

  • @sharkscanplay2890

    Honestly on the fa24 platform it definitely shouldve been boosted from factory considering subarus entire lineup uses that exact same engine. Considering the power numbers the turboed wrx fa24 makes with just the cobb package that is still carb legal (I believe it was 400-450 to the wheel), no reason to not release the car boosted. Couldve just released a boosted trim. Idk especially at times where the entire hate for the car is "SlOw 86". The extra power in a light car wouldve been a welcome change in my eyes.

    "In 2024, Subaru released the BRZ tS (tS standing for "tuned by STI") as a new trim that features an upgraded interior with blue stitching, an STI-themed instrument cluster, a red STI engine start button, golden 4-piston Brembo brakes in the front, 2-piston brakes in the back, upgraded suspension, black metallic finish wheels and black mirror caps. It also features Subaru's Eyesight system with the manual transmission along with the rest of the 2024 model trims. The tS trim is only available with the manual transmission, and is based on the Limited trim, featuring heated seats and a similar interior design. While previous tS editions of the cars were under limited production, this one is mass-produced. The customer is able choose the car's color, add accessories, etc."
    So an NA 2.4 making 230hp. suspension (who makes the suspension?), and expensive brakes.
    *Can we just get the 2015 STi concept please?*

    I don't like the idea that GT86/BRZ/MX-5 shouldn't get more powerful versions. Make the affordable one for sure, but why not have a TRD/STI/Mazdaspeed version of those respective cars for power nuts like me? I don't see where 100hp over stock would ruin any of these cars and I am sure there is a market for high performance varients. Not saying don't keep making the normal ones, but why do auto journalists argue against more powerful iterations of these cars?

    • @istvanlorinczi2817
      @istvanlorinczi2817 17 дней назад +1

      Because the point is to give people and affordable sportscar as an option.
      Let's not even get into turbo land, keep the theoretical powerful version NA. It'd probably need different compression ratio to make extra power, so a different bore and stroke combination, which means a bespoke rotating assembly, and either a different block (current one is already looking real tight, not much space for extra bore).
      Yes, every car is overbuilt already, but the extra powerful variant can't build less, or even the same peak numbers as the regular car, so everything has to be more reinforced. Probably a different flywheel, maybe stronger gears in the transmission, beefier driveshaft, differential and axles to handle extra power. Even more so if we were to add a turbo or 2 to the mix.
      Different parts have to be more expensive, because they won't sell in big numbers. Toyota/Subaru can't disolve that extra cost between a ton of cars, so the extra powerful versions would obviously have to cost extra. Push this platform any higher up market, and the interior just isn't good enough. Push it even further up market, and we're in S650 Mustang and A90 Supra land, that's how you kill the affordable sportscar, like all the rest of them (minus Miata) from the 80s and 90s
