Here in the US ever since 2002 and I went for a ride in and drove my first boosted Subaru I’ve been in love with them. I was a sophomore in high school than and my buddy Drew had boosted his tiny 2 door Impreza L. Our senior year he had picked up a 2.5RS and put a JDM EJ22 into it along with a ton of legitimate and replica 22B components and parts. At ECS in Windsor Locks, CT it made 390 AWHP and he ran that car hard for over a decade with no head gasket issues and no glass 2nd gear problems. At 35 I finally decided I was going to build my own. I found a 2.5RS with high mileage, bone stock for $4500 and grabbed it for $3000. I had about a half dozen car friends who work in various sectors in the car industry help me with my build over the next 2 years or so. Everything from the frame to the interior was gutted and restored/modified to my dream car vision. At the end of the day it’s an amazing daily driver, in world rally blue with a carbon fiber trunk, hood and mirrors, RPF-1’s, a fully built EJ22 from Japan built and tuned by ECS and the Shop CT. On low boost it makes 348 AWHP and 415 on high boost all on pump fuel. The Tein suspension setup with anti roll bars and coilovers had a complete suspension geometry tune by my buddy Eric who works for Porsche and the mandatory 4 piston Brembo’s stop beautifully. I get that there’s WAYYY faster and better cars out there but this was my dream car and after wanting one for over 20 years I still get that “holy crap this is mine” feeling when I see it in my driveway or start it up before a cruise.
The RA designation stands for "Record Attempt" and has been applied to various Subaru performance models. As an owner of a 2004 WRX wagon for almost a decade. I love seeing the positive Subaru content showing how awesome these cars can be. I did a JDM STI EJ207 ver7 swap with FP 68HTA (TD05) turbo, 1000cc injectors, 255 walboro pump, catless uppipe/downpipe, intake, big Perrin TMIC, paired with some sway bar/endlinks, and coilovers. I can't necessarily speak to the whole "super fast" STi, but I can absolutely tell you that my STi is one of the most fun and gratifying cars to drive even being 90% stock. It would have cost 6 grand to get back to street legal. I sold it for 3 grand. The guy who bought it heard how smooth the engine ran, looked at me and said, "What on earth did you do to get it to run that smooth?" He didn't believe me when I said the only thing you need to do is change the oil to a quality synthetic and change it every 3k miles. Do those two things and it runs buttery smooth. No matter how hard I pushed that car, it never even came close to overheating. Thing was a beast. Whilst I miss the subie rumble and the AWD in the snow, I absolutely adore the '22 veloster N dct I bought to replace it. I, like many others, though I would hate FWD. It does not take away from the fun in any way. The FWD system is DAMN GOOD. It is insanely planted with no torque steer and it has ridiculous levels of grip. The N is an incredible machine. The reason I picked it is because it has the same 'hooligan/goon' personality as the 07 STI, but it is sharper and faster than an sti. The N-grin-shift button is WILD. Let me know if you guys ever find youself in New Jersey. We have a few 800hp to 900hp Subarus that feel great. On the last Subaru (700hp), it seems it needs a retune to maximize the mid range torque. Our 800 and 900hp cars are torque monsters in that mid range. Great video!
Those are not usdm Subaru engines and are not as keen to explode on the owners after only 5km. The 2l JDM engines are a lot better than the usdm 2.5l they even rev higher and sound better. They can hold boost better and don’t have as many oiling problems.
no. RA is record attempt. Still an epic "legacy" (pun fun) of great modifications to make a production car full tilt. Still love the video and the smiles per minute lap generated.... pretty good!
Cool thing about the EJ20K, if the GC8 is so equipped, is that it has the highest lift, longest duration stock cams of any EJ series. Close second would be the cloverleaf EJ20D, followed by the USDM EJ25D-ironically, the OG 'gasket-blower' that gave them the reputation. *cough* replace the head gaskets every 130,000 miles like the service manual says to *cough*
Back in 98/99 my boss at the time was a big playstation fan and loved Colin McRae rally, we badgered him into buying a brand new WRX STi, in maroon with the big rally wing, his wife hated it as the suspension was that harsh, it was low mileage. A couple of years later, early 2000s I worked at a garage and one of our customers was a recreational talcum powder dealer, nudge nudge, he owned an early Impreza 2 door, but, he threw money at it, as he had a bit to spare, 2.5l imported engine, fully worked, trick suspension, I think it was a 3inch full exhaust from front to back, it was a monster and cost him 1000s. I drove it a couple of times and it was insane, the acceleration, the noise, it just went. A couple of years later I drove a brand new £30k Subaru WRX from the dealers and it felt sedentary in comparison. His talc business hit the buffers unsurprisingly and the car was confiscated and crushed, which was a real pity as 2 doors were really rare and still are.
Oh and IIRC it was dyno'd at around 800bhp in it's prime, it had to get transported a couple of hundred miles away as 4wd dyno's were rare back then. I remember it snapped the front crank pulley off and needed a new crank casting as 2.5 engines were unheard of outside Japan and new cranks were unobtainable. But money was no object.
people dont understand that subarus are usually best driven at near stock power levels with stock size tires cuz you can drive them flat out and have a great time
Too many people modify them to have extremely stiff suspension and big power only to do stoplight pulls. So seldom do I see a WRX modified for mixed surface driving, as was intended.
you can't really compare a car on street tires to one on semi-slicks, you need to get yourself a tire sponsor lol so you can put the same tires on every car
AFAIK, 'RA' has had various meanings over the years. First used for the Legacy record attempt, then to designate early competition spec cars; 'Rally/Race Altered'. More recently RA for Record Attempt was used again for the Nurburgring attempt ;Type RA NBR

You guys should do this with a Camaro, Mustang or Challenger and have Scott's wife do the tests.....lol
Her genuine love for the V8 was awesome to watch.
she was great! would definitely watch more with her.
"Those closest thing to space travel!"
Well, you have the cars, I'd love if there was a way you could do a drag race to see how they perform with just acceleration.
The rumble of the RA is godlike...
Amen ❤
less gooo another upload, this has been my top gear since it was cancelled
I bought a T reg GC8 back in August. Best thing I ever did ever ❤
I reckon the classic would go under the minute mark after the track dried out.
that last one is so forceful that all other cars in the vicinity automatically have 20 more hp just from hearing it
Guys, there's no T in Impreza...it's not Impretza...there's a Zed not a T.
Such a great series. Keep em coming lads.
Shoulda tried my 400bhp Spec C RA too.... reckon it would have even given the newest one a run for its money...
2:47-2:52 what a wonderful choice of words
I really wish you guys could do another build series like you had for the Bananaru.
It’s funny that even Scott couldn’t speak after the last one
Good night donutmedia.
I do love the Subaru content your pumping out 🙏🏼
Cool thing about the EJ20K, if the GC8 is so equipped, is that it has the highest lift, longest duration stock cams of any EJ series. Close second would be the cloverleaf EJ20D, followed by the USDM EJ25D-ironically, the OG 'gasket-blower' that gave them the reputation.
*cough* replace the head gaskets every 130,000 miles like the service manual says to *cough*
this series is so fun, but cars just get f-in wild
Amazing video and absolutely gorgeous cars! More of this please! :)
the first one sounded exactly like the eclipse in 2f2f (yes they used boxer noises in post lol)
Now we need a video about the GT-Rs
The 700 hp subaru is basically the closest thing to a 205 t16
people dont understand that subarus are usually best driven at near stock power levels with stock size tires cuz you can drive them flat out and have a great time
Too many people modify them to have extremely stiff suspension and big power only to do stoplight pulls. So seldom do I see a WRX modified for mixed surface driving, as was intended.
Purchased a classic RA two months ago, soooo sexy
Have fun!!!! 💪
you can't really compare a car on street tires to one on semi-slicks, you need to get yourself a tire sponsor lol so you can put the same tires on every car
Amazing video. This series should continue with the next car being Mitsubishi evo.
Love my ‘10 STi hatch! “The sound of my people!” (UEL header boxer noises)
That gen 1 is perfect. My absolute favorite.
I'd love to see their reactions in a proper quick drag car like low 7, high 6 second 1/4
They would need to get certified for that, but it would be sick to see
theyd shit a brick, maybe 2.
What's a 700hp wrx do? Probably 9s maybe 8s?
@@veneratedmortal4369mid 10s
@@veneratedmortal4369 It will do mid 9s on a prepped surface with slicks
RA means record attempt, race/rally alternated was close enough 😂
AFAIK, 'RA' has had various meanings over the years. First used for the Legacy record attempt, then to designate early competition spec cars; 'Rally/Race Altered'. More recently RA for Record Attempt was used again for the Nurburgring attempt ;Type RA NBR
Yes record attempt 👍
Guy in my state built a forged bug eye with 700hp got plates GAPNU on it , it was quick.
It lasted about six months before it went 💣💥
not fair for the gc8, the track was getting dryer and dryer every minute for the other scoobies. Nevermind, great video guys!
I have a 600 whp Legacy wagon :P about to be 750 :P
Ive always said a responsive true 350awhp subaru is one of the most fun street cars you can have
Loved this video, I've owned 3 gc8 imprezas, a blob and know we have a hatchback.
Love Imprezas. Working on fixing up my 2002, great cars.
Breaks my heart that overdrive stopped calling their subaru as the bananaru
Scott is able to make a 12 minute video about turbo lag, this video explained it within 20 seconds
Not once did they mention the track condition getting better. This is apparently a channel for the casuals.
I just turned 40 and Tommy Hilfiger was and still is my favorite shirt at 17\40
