I can tell that you're a liberal because you used the word, incel. You people are all cut from the same cloth.
She can hold the fact that her family forgot about her birthday over their heads forever
Especially when the marriage breaks up after 45 minutes and so it feels extra pointless.

And just because you're OFFENDED doesn't make it BAD.

side note: it’s always so funny to see Anthony Michael Hall as a string bean in Sixteen Candles & Breakfast Club, and then, as a strong bean in Edward Scissorhands 😂 he looks like a totally different person
Fun fact: Anthony Michael Hall was a cast member on the NBC sketch show "Saturday Night Live" from 1985 to 1986. He's the only SNL cast member hired who was under 18 (he was 17 when hired).
*Puberty.*
I think the reason people were drawn to this movie was because people identified with the concept, a girl on her sweet 16 and everyone forgets because her sister is getting married the next day. Like that as a concept I think could make a compelling film, it’s just filled with gross misogyny, racism, and sexism.
also i was like 11 when it came out. at this time they didnt have a lot of coming of age movies especially with a female lead
in my head canon, someone at the end asks long if he is Chinese or Japanese and he looks completely normal with a very natural American accent that says " actually I'm from Burbank"
The whole time watching this (and my whole life really) I thought 16 candles was the older version of 16 wishes and she was gonna make the wishes… so apparently 16 wishes is not a remake of 16 candles? lmaooooo
So many ppl made this mistake loooool maybe I should just watch 16 Wishes 😂

I mean the trend perists but it really used to be like 'get it there foreign!!' Like yikes o'clock not to mention all the casual sexism and homophbia!!
At least in the goonies he isn’t super offensive, he has a slight accent and is quirky but he’s still an adorable kid and a main character. Also way less annoying than Chunk.

A synopsis of sixteen candles:
P A I N
I feel like sixteen candles honestly is only held in high regard because of rose tinted nostalgia glasses and the names of who was involved... I personally always liked pretty in pink more but I honestly don't remember much about that movie other than loving the costume designs.
Lmao could be the same about literally everything grow up please

@@Error_-ct2vp wouldn't call that offensive and idk what you're so pressed about..
I actually thought Blaine was a coward and I couldn't figure out what Andi saw in him. I used to think Ducky was a better choice for her, but as I got older, I realized that just because he liked her, doesn't mean she has to like him back.
i did not remember this movie being as problematic as it is. wow. 😀 but honestly that also just goes to show how much we normalized all of these things even just a few years ago…
Same it reminds me of the time i rewatched scooby doo and the samurai's sword and just consistently cringed
@@spookygirl31 what happened in that movie? I haven't in years
"Problematic", lol!
This movie is not intended viewing for Marxists like you.
No, you're just viewing it thru the lens of real life, and not understanding that the movie is a comedy, meant to be exaggerated for comic effect.
Just goes to show what a bunch of pathetic hyper-sensitive snowflakes people have become.
i want sophia to start pulling a turning red opening scene and just be dancing her intros lol
It's too hot to be moving around like that 😩
@@SophiaPhannn fair enough
People who liked this either retain that fandom from their youth or change their views, often just to not be perceived as insensitive. I'm skeptical of people who publicly change their views only with the trends, not because they really thought about it.
I have noticed that when people complain about stereotypes of one group or race of people, they have no problem with modern-day, negatively-impacting representation. "I'm very glad that we live in 2022 right now" with rampant crime and soft-on-crime prosecutors, fentanyl, and so on.
The Spandau Ballet song "True" was not originally from this movie. Most of the songs were already produced and available on other albums.
All the calls for censorship from people claiming this is "harmful" are the reason why I buy hard copies and don't rely on streaming.
Ugh, this movie not only normalizes r&piness, but actually tried to make it okay because afterwards she says "you know, I have this weird feeling I did" (enjoy it). So it's totally fine to violate a black-out drunk person, because they'll actually be grateful!
BARF
She probably thought she enjoyed it because she mistook the geek for JAKE THE ENTIRE TIME. It just adds another layer of ick 🤢
@@SophiaPhannn A very similar scenario plays out in the movie Revenge Of The Nerds, from around the same time. A "nerd" in a mask pretends to be a young woman's boyfriend at a costume party. They have sex, and afterwards, when she finds out who it was, she just sort of shrugs and decides she likes him better than the original boyfriend (if I'm remembering correctly). In real life, she would be traumatized and her ability to ever trust or feel safe again would be destroyed. But hey! Screenwriters at the time thought it was funny!
As someone who grew up in the 80s, I can tell you that this movie didn't normalize anything. It reflected the ignorance of these issues during those times. And that ignorance only subsided gradually over a long period. At the same time, you also have to keep in mind that comedies from this time period had not mastered the art of the realistic. In fact the crazier and more unrealistic it was, the funnier it was considered. Things that would not be funny in real life were considered funny in those movies. So, when watching these movies, you have to keep both of those things in mind. Overall, I would say don't take a movie like this too seriously. Be glad that most people today would be outraged if a movie like this ever came out today.
I never thought they did it. Neither remembered anythjng and they're both fully dressed when they wake up. They were just so trashed they couldn't remeber anything.
@@russellward4624 Whether they did or not, her boyfriend very deliberately and soberly "gave" her to a guy who the boyfriend seemed to fully believe was going to r@pe her. And that boyfriend is the main love interest of the movie!
I tried to watch this movie when I was younger and thought it was one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. I have no clue why it is known as a classic.
Same and same.
Same I remember finding it boring. I love 80s movies but this one was not it for me.
Probably because you are a not a very smart individual
It's great. You probably suck at life
I never saw this movie, I just heard my mom talk about it once when the movie was referenced in media we were watching. Some kind of movie or show, in which some woman said she wanted something similar to this movie having that romantic scene in public and I called it out for being toxic and manipulative as public declarations are basically emotionally pressuring someone. My mom then defended it and said, "its a classic from back in the day. Your generation wouldn't understand. You should actually see the movie someday." I never did, this is my first contact with the movie and just by seeing the comment section I'm happy I never did.
And this is why I voted Pretty in Pink... or better yet Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!
this movie is terrible, aged SO bad (and i'm shocked some of this was ever seen as okay???)
but some parts here and there can be fun to watch - you know, the parts that aren't super gross
Movies didn’t have to be seen as ok in the 80’s because companies had a lot more money to throw around on “zany” projects. It’s not like now how every movie has to be “safe” to maximize profits. Also the general culture at the time was that people didn’t see media as something that had to be morally right because it’s not the job of the media to teach good values, but the parental units. But ironically at that very time is when parents were very neglectful, and kids did end up being raised by the tv. This created a reactionary “helicopter” parenting style when those kids became parents for millennials.
It is MASTERPIECE, unlike all the WOKE bullshit that's released nowadays! 😑

F slur ? bahahahah please..I'm f slurring right now..
"Oh shit. Boobies!"
I felt the same way when I watched this movie when I was in high school. I was even more pissed because people hyped up this movie and it's BAD! Hated the characters, the men were gross, and the pacing is terrible.
EDIT: AND it was boring!
" Hasn't aged well " was a vast understatement
I think the only thing I like about this movie is Joan Cusack's character. I'd be way more invested in a movie focused on her. The rest of this movie can go to hell with their disgusting actions towards women and ending it with having Jake and Sam become a couple as if we're supposed to be happy about that cause yeah I cannot get past his "ways to violate" line. 🤢
I thought Joan Cusack's character would do more like her brother's character :/ but she was just a background geek character that just happened to have some scenes
@@SophiaPhannn Yeah true. How sad is that, that what I consider the only interesting character is a background character with little to no significance to the actual movie? 😂 Still would rather watch a whole movie based on her.
Side note, it's kind of interesting how Joan is playing an extra in a movie where her little brother has a larger role.
Joan is a gift... I sat through a smattering of forgettable movies just to see her
lol
As an Asian growing up i never understood why all my white friends love this movie. I was like there’s literally a super offensive comedy relief “foreign” Asian character, how was I ever supposed to feel comfortable watching this???
You can't be comfortable, and you shouldn't have to be. It was racist then, and racist now. It sucks growing up when your white friends don't notice they things they do or say that hurt you, and you have to educate them. Hopefully they know better now 😒
@@Lola_Nico wow it’s you again! presumably you’re white so it’s not your place to decide what is and isn’t racist. just say you’re a bigot and move on.
it's such a common trope in older movies too. Like, I love Breakfast at Tiffany's, but every time Mickey Rooney's character comes on scene I die a little. I wish they were just recut the movie with all those scenes removed so I could actually enjoy it.
Cry a river lady😂
@@Noneofyourbiz67 and what is your problem exactly?
Watched this in high school and remembered enjoying it. The terrible pacing was actually a staple of a lot of '80s comedies, which relied on explosive comedy followed by a long windup to the next thing.
Rewatched it a few years back for a podcast I was doing and, with the benefit of context and adulthood and a little more self-awareness of my middle-aged-whiteness, I felt like I needed a bath afterwards. Molly has said similar things about it IIRC.
Yeah it makes me wonder how the actors in films like these think about them nowadays
middle-aged whiteness? LOL
Two of my favorite 80's movies are Labyrinth and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! I would love to hear your thoughts on them eventually 😁💕
What about Earth Girls Are Easy? I wonder how that aged?
I've watched Labyrinth last year on my channel!! I really enjoyed it :)

Alot of Colombian Snow. Ha ha.
would it be ok if this was a comedy?
Fun fact: the guy who played the sister's groom is supposed to be playing...what, here? Around 22?
The NEXT YEAR this same director cast him in The Breakfast Club as the school janitor and played him off as at least 30.
I don't think he's supposed to be playing 22. I think the older sister's supposed to be at least 20, and he's significantly older than she is. But yes, ages moved around a lot in casting back then!
I watched this in highschool and was so confused kinda horrified the way the love interest just abandons his ex for whatever to happen to her 😬 and the pervy twerp we’re supposed to root for to get a girl just no no NO
Though I do love the older sister taking too many pills on her wedding day that was funny
Thank you for not sugar coating it. This movie sucks big time. Every "joke" is r*cist or r*pey or both.
Yep, that pretty much sums up 80s mainstream media: r*cist and/or r*pey. Just throw in a sprinkling of homophobia, and it's a "classic"!
Nobody cares about “racist” jokes. Bet you can’t stand comedians.
@@Lola_Nico comedians talk about many topics, and sometimes race is one of them. If you're a _good_ comedian, you can actually make a joke about race, funny. The majority of this movie's jokes past the first act are either about rape or racist stereotypes. And unfunny, according to most 🤷🏿♀️ comedy is subjective.
What is your point here? Do you think this movie is perfect and untouchable? Do you think comedians are perfect and untouchable? Now *that's* funny
@@Lola_Nico if a comedian has to rely on racism to be “funny” then they’re not funny. it’s lazy
@@stellaluna5064 it’s not funny to straight up be racist. But to make racial jokes is a different thing and most comedians of all races do it.

Poor Gedde Watanabe! I had a big crush on him because his character was a "weirdo," I had no concept of stereotypes yet. **cringe**
"He needs to meet a girl who matches his energy" is a REALLY sweet way of putting it (for AMH)! If it weren't the '80's it might have been depicted as a possibility!
Dude, this movie gets worse every time I see it, and I loved it as a kid. "bohunk" is a slur, even the sweet moment with her dad is ruined!
thank you for mentioning the bohunk thing, because people never talk about it. People talk about the Asian mockery but never talk about the anti-Hungarian propaganda in this film (but that's because Hungarians are white and thus people don't think they can be discriminated against), but calling a Hungarian a bohunk is like their version of the n word.
@@finland4ever55not sure why you have to compare it to the n word 🙄
The biggest problem isn't it being problematic or boring for me. Honestly, Mollie Ringwald is in like a collective 8 minutes of the last 45 minutes of the movie is the problem.
Literally
So what
Gedde Watanabe was often used as a bad Asian stereotype back then... despite the fact that hes from fuggin Utah. In Gremlins 2 hes somehow even more embarrassing as the Japanese guy who always takes photos (a common 80s era stereotype about Japanese tourists). One of the few movies that let him use his real accent from this era is the 80s Vampire film "VAMP" starring Grace Jones.
this movie was so bad like even if you overlooked all the problematic stuff it would still be terrible
it would be really cool if you watched Crash (1996) next
This wasn't outrageous or shocking in 1984
I was in 8th grade, and had already seen Fast Times at Ridgemont High....this is tame.
I barely made it through 16 candles pretty much for the same reasons. "Mannequin 2" from 1991 could be fun to review, when I watched it, it unlocked some forgotten childhood memories. "Valley girl" is another 80s teen movie I quite liked, it's with a very young Nicolas Cage. Ok, I see you review mostly teen movies, so "She's the man" and "What a girl wants" with Amanda Bynes are more appropriate suggestions haha. Love your reviews btw and your hair!
That title is a mood 😭 I watched it with my parents when I was 10 and I hated it ever since
My grandfather was Japanese and I love the Asian character in this movie along with any others like him from 80s movies! Data from the Goonies is another! ❤ 😂 (((Gong sound)))
I grew up in a strict home, so missed a lot of these "classic" '80s movies a lot of people my age seem to adore. I saw it for the first time a few years ago and...I'm very concerned for everyone who grew up watching this O.O
it's just one movie
We grew up just fine. We knew the difference between a movie and reality back then.
I'm sorry but if my little brother commented on my body and called me a 'birth defect', he would not leave that house alive.
pretty sure he would
People who say this is their favourite movie is an immediate red flag for me
Even if they say it's their favorite to watch to riff/rag on it's something of a red flag, at least in terms of their tastes. _Quite_ dull.
🙋me!!me!!
Yikes. I voted for this one instead of Pretty in Pink because I thought Pretty In Pink was boring when I watched it and I’d never seen Sixteen Candles before. Now I kinda regret my vote lol
I had the same experience, honestly. I watched it a couple years algo because it was "such a classic" but I hated this, I don't understand how it was so popular, not only because of the problematic and disgusting behaviours, but also NOTHING HAPPENS, there's no conflict or story and it's so boring to watch. Definitely one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Agreed. I did not see what the hype was about
The Asian stereotype in this is just tragic 😩 I remember watching this for the first time a few years ago and cringing so hard at what they did for that character
Had to pause the video to order myself some lemon slice earrings cuz they are so cute!
They're truly statement pieces!! 💅🏻
This is one of my top 5 movies of all time! I grew up in the 80’s and I’m Vietnamese too. 🥰
wait arent those 2 in the breakfast club?? (idk their real names OR their characters names in the movie lol)
so many people recommended this to me bc it was a "classic" and was "romantic" so I gave it a shot bc I thought I would like it
To this day I really don't understand why everyone refers to this movie like it was the best one of its time when it's not only bad but it normalizes so many horrible behaviors
It is actually so bad I remember I was sick once and off school so I watched about 3 80’s movies I’d never seen before. Ferris bueller, Breakfast club, and sixteen candles. The first two were brilliant and so entertaining to watch. I couldn’t get through more than 15 mins of 16 candles, it was too cringe and boring. There’s two of the same actors in SC as in The Breakfast club, and I was just so fucking disappointed with how bad it was and how cringe, expecially after seeing how good the breakfast club was in comparison 😭 It’s so disturbing too. Like the sexual harassment on the bus was a lot, then the grandparents thing…. nah. I switched it off and went to have a nap 😅😅
Don’t worry, I’m with you 100% on this. A Far superior John Hughes film would be the Breakfast Club. I don’t remember if you’ve already watched it or not
i was really perplexed at why people wanted you to watch this movie its so bizarrely unpleasant to watch in this day and age
alot of modern movies are also bizarrely unpleasant to watch in this day and age
There’s an episode of Inside Job on Netflix that references some of the problematic elements of this movie and 80s movies in general.

To me, Molly Ringwald singlehandedly made this movie worth watching. I also get a kick out of seeing what people thought was cool in the '80s, whether it's holding pinkeys, funny outfits, or horrific racism and misogyny.
wow!!! i forgot how much i hated this movie. most of all it reminded me of how much i dislike these brat pack movies... none of these characters like each other? like nobody is friends with anyone, no one treats another with any sort of kindness or friendship... i get that high school was hell but Jesus. at least pretty in pink has a decent soundtrack and fun clothes tbh.
"OH, SEXY GIRLFRIEND!" LOL! I heard that line in an episode of Family Guy Mother Tucker, where Stewie and Brian have their own personal Radio talkshow.
In one instance Stewie played a sound bite from Philadelphia with horrified looks in their faces and Denzal Washington saying: "After all AIDS is a deadly and incurable. But when Charles Wheeler and his partners in unethical and immoral terms knew that the fact that matter is when they fired Andrew Beckett, because he had AIDS, they... broke..the law."
Brian turns to Stewie and says" My God what is wrong you!?"
Stewie says, "I swear to God, it was supposed to be good fight!"
Breakfast Club is SIGNIFICANTLY less cursed than this movie lol
but still cursed...
Breakfast club is boring
There are much better-made movies from the 80's: E.T, Heathers, Back to the future(all 3), Beaches, Roxanne and hundreds of other films. 16 candles👎 is just one of the duds.🍿
As soon as you said that Ryan looked like he was 25 when he first looked at Molly, I immediately sang Kennie JD's song: A BROODING HOT 25-YEAR-OLD TEENAGEEEEER!! XDD
I almost think Pretty in Pink was John Hughes' second draft of Sixteen Candles. Both have very similar plots (Molly Ringwald's character goes after the popular guy who doesn't notice her while also befriending the nerdy guy who has a huge crush on her) but Pretty in Pink doesn't have anywhere near the number of issues that Sixteen Candles did (at least, I don't remember it having any issues, or if there were, they were nowhere near as glaring).
And they're both incredibly boring
*Gedde Watanabe chose to portray Long Duk Dong.* He is an American from Utah, who grew up in San Francisco. He faked the accent for this movie. So far I haven't seen any interview where Watanabe regrets his choice or the way the character appears. Had he been a Scotsman FES, played by an Irishman, with bagpipes accentuating the lines, we'd find nothing offensive. If you truly *TRULY* want to be offended, look at Mickey Roonie's Yellow-face portrayal of an angry Chinese neighbor in Breakfast at Tiffany's. They could've hired James Hong to play the part and he would've been funnier without the cringe.
Love how the Italian-American stereotypes are just accepted without question even today. Nice.
I hope Gedde Watanbe got better roles after this one. Big condolences to all the fellow asians, in all directions of the compass, playing the cringiest roles in the 80s.
Now I think about it I also extend my sympathy for the women. Main lead getting seggsually harassed by strangers, friends. Family? GRAMPA??? 🤮🤮🤮
He voiced Ling in the animated Mulan, and went on to play recurring roles on both Sesame Street and ER in the late '80s through the late '90s, so he did alright. He did continue to play "funny Asian man" type roles for years, appearing as Kuni (martial arts instructor and host of the in-movie game show "Wheel of Fish") in Weird Al's UHF and as a karate master in some direct-to-VHS movies for McDonald's. Not sure if you can read that as, he was happy to take those roles because they were fun and easy money, or as, this is the only part a Japanese man could get in Hollywood at that point.
I was happy he was in an episode of Rugrats. He played the dub voiced of a scientist observing Reptar.
It’s ok Sophia, I’ve never liked this movie.
Wow, this movie aged like milk.
This movie is a perfect example of how censorship isn't always a bad thing. Yes; sometimes people can be too sensitive over things nowadays, but I also feel like some things that are potentially harmful, should looked at with their problems and outdated ideals acknowledged. This movie wouldn't fly today, and that's a good thing.
You may as well oppose free speech in general!🙄
@@liampatrick3110 Damn hope you're not too tired from building that strawman
I think this movie shouldn't be censored for the exact reasons you stated. It's important to be able to look back at the art made in bygone eras to understand what that era was like. That this is what people found to be acceptable at the time. I'm not saying the movie deserves a pass like some old grandpa you point to and say "Forgive him, he's from an older generation." It was bad then and it's bad now. But it is important to know what things were like back then.
@@MadameTamma I do agree that it's important to look back on it and see what was more acceptable back then. I'm not saying that this movie should be banned from people ever watching it. I'm just saying that in terms of censorship, I can see why something this movie would not be accepted today, even though it's interesting to see what was allowed in an era long gone, if that makes sense.

Yeah… John Hughes just doesn’t seem to stand out as a great director these days. I’ve watched Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink and The Breakfast Club and none of them stand out as great films to me. As Sophia pointed out, this movie and Pretty In Pink are boring as hell, and Breakfast Club… while it’s a little more interesting, it doesn’t hold up and the only think that I thought it had going for it was the soundtrack and I have seen movies with better soundtracks. Maybe because I'm not sensitive like this gen but thus is one of my favorite movies because it's just a movie lol
Yeah and it’s funny
Can you still watch pretty in pink tho? It’s my fav 😂😂
I will always giggle at the word "undies"
LOL I love this movie! What a classic
Long Duk Dong was totally rad. He was invited to the high school dance-as an equal-got a girlfriend, was invited to the exclusive rich-kid alchol party, then got laid.
How is that a bad thing for a high school kid?
Lemme tell ya: as a little Asian American boy growing up in the '80s, I wanted to launch this movie and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom into space. F both of 'em, nostalgia be damned.
I thought this was Debby Ryan’s 16 wishes.
Before I continue to watch the video, your hair is still amazing and the fact that had this asian man talk so stereotypical with a stereotypical name; it makes me upset a little. The take channel also talked about it.
Thank you 🥺 the color was faded a lot, so I felt like it looked less good this video
2:50 I think the only really cool thing you get to do at 16 is be old enough to have a drivers license. I think there might be other things other cultures celebrate at 16 like I think in some places people can vote at 16 and maybe drink. I could be way wrong.
Germans can legally drink beer when they turn 16
Litteraly tought of watching one of tout videos and BAM its litteraly just been uploadé 😂
I just finished the vid now and i'm happy that film liké that are from another era
It is interesting how in these 80s movies they hired adults to play teens. Look at Judge Reinhold in Fast Times at Ridgemount High. He looks like is old enough to be their parents.
Not long after this movie came out, I was dragged to go see it. I thought it was so horrible, I refused to see any other movie by John Hughes.
To this day, I still do not regret that decision.
Aside from Home Alone 1...yeah, you're not missing much...
His other movies are actually fairly decent if you ask me, but this one was just a complete disaster.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is great. But it's about adults so there's a different sensibility.
Yeah, I watched this for the first time today and now I feel like I know why older generations are so problematic. Movies like this are a classic and there are issues left and right. Lol
It’s kinda telling about the 80’s when a movie with racism, rape, and incest jokes can be seen as wholesome lmao
18:37 get me every time he was on revenge of the nerd uhf was the best.
UHF best one and nerds nerds nerds.
It took me like forever to actually finish this movie 😂😂
seeing that you were watching this I was like "oh no.... oh NO"
I always tend to feel an eye-roll coming on when the word "problematic" is used to describe it. John Hughes was excellent at tapping into what teenagers were feeling in the 80s. Even if it's not a great movie it really captures what it felt like to be a kid back then. In that regard, it's really good. Sure, some of the stuff hasn't aged particularly well, but neither has Gone With the Wind or countless other movies. I tend to overlook a lot of things in movies if, overall, I like it. Maybe it's the Gen X'er in me that feels people need to pump the breaks a little on "problematic" things from movies that are nearly 40 years old. I don't really see the point in getting all riled up over it.
