This game, I spent hours and hours and loading like a madman from tape. It was extremely hard, managed to do a few missions in the end but never played it through.
ah, the good old days. I remember it like yesterday. Tape in, loading....... loading....... sssssj, stay quiet....... no sound pls....... UGH DAMN!!!!!! Error loading the friggin game after it was almost finished loading. (somehow a sound triggered an error) If i got the chance to play it, i was able to reach level 2. And then it would quit again. Tapes. Yeah, wonderful stuff.
Ambitious game for 64K machine. I remember having no clue what was going on - not speaking English at the time; but it made impression back in the ’80s.
I had this game when I was 8 on my C64. I did not know English at that time, and I had no manuals as well. I was somehow able to take off, but I would end up wandering around and getting destroyed. Good thing I had it on a cassette, so the second half of the game was loaded separate. I got to play on the infiltration part by constantly running away rather than knowing to show my papers.
Similar scenario with me. I figured out how to take off, but I was too little to know how to read the manual. I remember much later finally reading it and learning the IFF system. I don't remember how I got to the later parts of the game, but it might have been similar as it was those 5 inch floppy disks.
@@alexandershowman8568 Wow, same with me! I remember when I read how to actually fly the chopper, it opened up an entirely new dimension of game for me!
Exactly the same experience here, but we managed to figure out most of the mechanics of the infiltration part between us three friends as kids! Seriously doubt we ever finished it, though. Good times...
28:39 Gotta love this. That's one smart scientist! He's got a huge head and sunglasses, and the equation of special relativity is on the wall! He's GOT to be smart! Why is he standing on his bed though? Those cooky professors! 55:02 Also this. WTF...
This game was extremely complex for it's time. I had a pirate copy (natch) as a kid and while I once or twice got the chopper to take off, I always crashed or was shot down. I had to play a file of part 2 separately ripped from the backside of the casette it shipped on, and even then didn't get all that far but I remember slinging many a gas grenade! It REALLY needed instructions. Great vid, OP!
To me, this was one of those games like Spectre where the box artwork was so amazing and enticing, but the game itself, even back then, was kind of meh (Though I was always in awe of Spectre)
I had the game when I was 16. I didn't bother reading the manual lol. I don't think I even ever completed the first mission. Mostly I flew around until I ran out of gas. Looks like the game was really cool...too bad I didn't like to read instructions :-(
To anyone who managed to figure out how to finish the helicopter part on their own, my respect. How the hell were you supposed to know all that!? Hahahaha, good old C64 times...
I half suspect that a lot of the obtuseness of these old games was an indirect form of copy protection: impossible to figure out without the manual. This was before you saw most of the classic copy protection like having to entire manual words or code wheels.
Never played this one. While dad was watching re runs of MASH on the TV i was playing C64 in the 80's no wonder i joined 1st air cav in the early nineties anyone remember huey? first 3d chopper game after choplift on the c64 after that my friend had a dos 486 with LHX light attack helicopter simulator years later. That game was insane for it's day best flight game i remember on 64 was f 14 tomcat that game pushed the c64 fairly well for a sim
This game came with a booklet, I think. It was a birthday present but we were out of town, so I was given the booklet and would just read it and wait in anticipation till we got home. I can't even remember what computer we used to play it. I'll just say I lasted maybe a couple hours and gave up. But I've never forgotten it. I'm excited to see wtf this game was supposed to be doing lmao
hit R2 to take off and use the diagonal sticks to fly. R3 repositions the camera, X fires the machine gun, square shoots off flares, triangle is for emergency exit. When jumping out, hit X to release the parachute. Use the sticks to fly through the rings to collect points. .... oh wait...
Like with so many C64 games this one was difficult to fully understand for a much younger me, and also english was not my main language, and also I pirated the game so I didn't quite get the manuals :)
I swear that I had a pirated copy of this when I was a kid, but the helicopter parts were completely absent and you started right at the base infiltration (which I never got passed the 1st level of, because good luck figuring any of these old games out without a manual). Does anyone else know of such a version? It surprised me years later when I saw that there was supposed to be an entire flight simulator half of the game.
In the original store bought version of the game, you had to complete the flying part to get to the ground mission. I have seen a pirated copy that allowed you to skip the flying, but I've never seen one that completely eliminated the flying.
I've had the original but I also later had the pirated copies of the game without the flying parts, and honestly the game was obviously not the same by being cut out by pieces. There was no more story loaded to it which was making the game quite soul less without the ending and all.
I am playing this now in the Dosbox online. I am able to take off, but i cant get into the computer terminal or the comm terminal. The buttons in the manual do not seem to work. I am using freegameempire dosbox. Anyone any idea how to see what keys are assigned?
