The Last of Us was a masterpiece 100%
@@holamoco I really wish they wouldn't have butcher Joel's character in the second one... and it needed rearranged story wise at the least plus I genuinely hate Abby and want her dead and it's beyond retarted that Ellie let her live. assassin's creed 2 did the whole letting the villain live thing and it played out exactly how it should and Ezio learned from that but it seems Ellie does a lot of regressing in none of the ways satisfying to the narrative at least as far as the second game goes
@@hodgindaylon Oddly enough, I came around for Abby. I hate her physical build, but she could have been a decent character in her own story. Her posse sucks.....every one of them.
But Dina is the one I hate. I don't like to use that word, but since we're talking about a fictional character, I'll make the exception.
I hate the Dina character. She instantly makes Ellie so much worse and unlikeable.
Plus she has a smugness and a preinstalled clout to her that is completely unearned.
Every scene she's in and every word of dialogue she speaks is brutal beyond any gore, infected, or killings that are featured in this game.
I don't like the part 2 anyway, but Dina destroyed this game before anyone else had a chance to.
Why does the game have stuttering?
@@hodgindaylon
I don't agree with you at all. Joel's character was not butchered. He was never a "good" person. None of them are. Abby was motivated by the same hatred Ellie was. In the end of part 2 Ellie let go. The whole game from the start of part 1 to the end of part 2 is very human. There are no heros, the best of humanity did not survive the outbreak. If anyone in the audience wanted a happy ending they should have played the Peppa pig game. The last of us is a true opera in video game form.
Fun fact: fan theory suggest the prologue when we play as Sarah is a recurring nightmare joel has every single night that goes on his head even when sleeping. Also another thing that points to it is when he meets ellie, the way he reacts when he first sleeps. As well as ellie saying you mumble in your sleep”
I am now a firm believer in that theory.
Nah
Especially because when we see Joel 20 years later he's waking up as if coming out of that nightmare
@@lostforever773 that's why it's a theory
@@lostforever773 mhm
What I find most depressing is that Sarah didn’t have to die. She wasn’t bit, her leg was just crushed. The soldier shot her anyways with only little empathy. It wasn’t an infected that got her, it was a human.
I feel like the soldier has empathy, considering he wanted to disobey his orders. But it shows the horrible things the government is willing to do in order to slow the spread of the infection.
It's so depressing but it sets up Joel's character so well. If she'd been bitten in the chase or something, he would've never forgiven himself, I'm doubtful he would be around 20 years later.
The fact that she was killed for no reason gives him all the justification to hate the world and even deprive it of a cure (how effective that would even be is another question).
It's also horrifyingly accurate, the soldier is "just following orders" and not letting his personal judgement decide.
The soldier did have empathy. He tried to protest against his commander when ordered to shoot Joel and Sarah. Then as he raised his gun, he was shaking his head (Edit: he does that in the original but for some reason doesn't do it in the remake). He was definitely remorseful about it.
The games suck

I played it on PS3 when it was 4 years old. I paid $5.00 for the game and after figuring out how to get it to work, I had to put the disc in while holding the console in the air - lol, the game was a masterpiece and lived up to all the hype.

I like to believe that Joel’s watch wasn’t cracked from the fall, but the watch blocking a bullet hitting Joel’s wrist. That watch is a constant reminder of his failure to protect Sarah.
I thought the same a near miss that stopped time
Exactlyyyy
A bullet would go straight through tho
Been replaying this game, again, and still finding small details I’ve never noticed before. The one I’ve seen and now notice every time is when I stealth attack an enemy and start to choke them out, their eyes become red and bloodshot. A small tidbit but just makes me appreciate the game that much more.
This makes anybody wish that Sara had survived longer further into the game to get to know other people that Joel comes across further into the game's journey down the road
The amount of time and effort you put in this video is awesome. I wish I could like it more than once
Thanks man 🖤
I just have to have a pause for a moment here. Your intro inadvertantly answered the question you posed. It inspired you to pursue something, a video game did that. Forget the praise the game gets, that alone speaks volumes. Sometimes I wonder if we get transfixed in looking for some sort of 10/10, once in a lifetime gem that needs to be held in the highest regard and forget that these type of games are meant to elicit something and for so many it has. Speaking for myself I know it has.
I haven’t been on a PlayStation console since the PS2 & PSP. So, circa 2005ish, I think.
I’m obsessed with this storyline. So glad it came out in a PC-based format. The HBO series & these videos are going to eat up hundreds of hours once I get this game, & I couldn’t be happier!
Thanks for a great dissection of a masterpiece of immersive art! based on
You said it. I literally put the controller down, clapped. Sat for a few moments not saying a word, and said out loud.. "what the f did I just play" with a tear in my eye. No cap....
holy cringoli
25:02 You weren't reading into this too much, as this was stated by Neil Druckmann in TLOU podcast
I think your videos need to be longer. What you have to say is great, but I can feel that you have much more that you want to add. You have great perspectives, and in my opinion to fully appreciate that, you should embrace a longer video where you can dissect every moment. I do not think it would hurt to experiment with a 4 or even 5 hour video, especially considering your content I'm sure would fill it comprehensively. Much love.
Thanks man 😌 I think the reason I’m scared to do 4 hour videos is because of the amount of pages I’d have to write for it lol. I’ll think about it though :).
@@ImGardenGnome I personally watch those long form videos pretty often.
I keep coming back to watch parts of this til I finish it and man Ellie’s face after Joel tells her “you’re right, you’re not my daughter, and I sure as hell ain’t your dad” and it hits so much harder being able to see the true disappointment in her face
1:26:50 I’ve seen a few other people make this comment but Joel is definitely not completely fine when he wakes up. You can imagine he’s been resting for awhile and he did get a dose of antibiotics after all. Waking up seeing Ellie gone clearly got his adrenaline going. His dad side kicked in. A parent will push through whatever for their kid.
You do have a point there! I never thought of that :) thank you🖤
@@ImGardenGnome Would love a video analysis for part 2 if you’re up for it. I know it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, I certainly have my own many gripes with the game. I played it for Ellie and was thoroughly disappointed-… but there’s still a lot to talk about!
All these years later I still need an explanation how Joel managed to dodge all the bullets in that burst but his daughter managed to catch one.
Especially since he turned
I spent years insisting i would hate these games. Finally bought them 2 months ago. I've now beat both games, I love them both dearly. Regardless of weird nerd rage about 2.
I absolutely love the giraffe scene. My favorite moment in the game.
TLOU probably has one of the best stories, not the best game but best story.
The Last Of Us and Red Dead Redemption 2 are just the most detailed, beautiful and story rich games ever.
1:26:50 Fun fact: according to Troy Baker, they recorded separate sounds(maybe movement too) for Joel during this section as he is still injured
Start the game as Sarah, and have her die. Then her memory carrying in Joel begins his demise. After playing as Ellie and surviving, he starts getting his soul back.
Interesting way to mark these events while also giving the player more empathy for Joel's frame of mind.
My first time playing this was very recent, I got the game with the free ps+ download and just never got around to playing it. That was a mistake. Game was wonderful. And for as much as the second one gets hate. It’s still an enjoyable game from a pure gameplay perspective
This story is heart wrenching and somehow you've captured it all perfectly, wow... when are you gonna do TLOU2 lol

Good game? Yes. A masterpiece? Very far from it. If they’d restructured it differently it probably would’ve gone lever a lot better with everyone. They failed miserably at getting people to relate with and understand Abby. Just sayin. I still liked the game, played it 3 times. But part 1 is superior in every way possible.
@@christopherkimber7679 I would disagree. I felt like I sympathized with both characters by the end. I do think that the way that they structured part 2 was a little clunky and could have done a little more to help you relate to Abby but all in all great game

I'm sorry, but this isn't a "critique", it's a 2 hour description.
I normally played on a lower quality 32 FPS TV without 4k and I just watched this video on my 4k 60FPS TV AND THE GAME LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER, LIKE IT LOOKED GOOD BEFORE BUT LIKE HOLY SHIT 4K MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE.
Have you played red dead redemption 2? I love TLOU but it’s a stretch to say that there are NO games with equal characterization (in and outside of cut scenes) and realism.
will be supporting everything you do. high effort and high quality already you can only go up from here bro!
Thanks man!
Piece of feedback. Don’t need to keep saying “I’m also going to let this cutscene play out.” I think after the first few times this is well understood, and it starts to get really repetitive. Otherwise a really good breakdown. Thanks
TLOU was a masterpiece, but not the game of the generation. The high action, cinematic, rich characters, the blend between game and movie trend is mostly set by Uncharted and Uncharted2. TLOU is a diferent story, setting, etc but it is just a contuation of that excellent standard set by the company.
And by the time TLOU is released we have had quite a few similar games. TLOU
I remember always raising my gun on Sam. Nobody messes with my new daughter.
Anyone else watching this to refresh their memory before the show comes out?
I'm not bitching that he used the remake but I will say a major change was made in the first remake. In the original you could bash any clicker to death with a brick. Bricks were king, you would bash a clicker then run to one of the plentiful bricks and bash another, they killed anything short of a bloater in 3 hits. The first time I played the remake it had been a while since I played the game and I swore that you could kill clickers with a brick so I tried it on the first clicker for about half an hour, dying over and over as my brother watched swearing that he had seem me do it countless times before.
The last of us stories isn't just a game "IT'S AN EXPERIENCE" I hate it for people who haven't played these games or even know about the games yet.

Man the Graphics of this remasterd are so good. Way better then on Ps3 and Ps4.

Tess and Joel have a relationship that’s alluded to being more than just a partnership. Bill almost says as much when the J&E meet up with him later. Frank and Tess are also thematic mirrors of each other, which reinforces the “more than friends” theory. I think Joel and Tess are just so battle hardened they can’t allow themselves to really let their emotions out, but Tess admits as much when she stays behind to fight the soldiers when she says (paraphrasing) “if this meant anything more to you…” in reference to their relationship.
There are so many hidden details in part 1+2 with references and parallels to each other also all the biblical names are very interesting
@@yandhigaming420 I honestly preferred the 2nd game to the 1st i know this is a controversial opinion and I respect ppl who didn't like how the 2nd game played out but i love the drama and character building i dont mind if characters do what seem like nonsensical things if it builds to something meaningful or just substantial feeling in the end... doesn't even have to have any real meaning to it honestly thats kind of a luxury. it's a story and we do nonsensical things in life too. no one stays the same forever even if they try their hardest to be rigid

I'm glad you were able to discuss a masterpiece without over looking some flaws (plot armor, dialogue continuity, inconsistent characterization, etc.) It really adds value so it's not just a multi hour rant praising it's perfection.

I’m here after the watching the first episode of last of us and you truly capture every emotion and love I have for this story, thank you. Hearing you talk with so much love about this game gives me so much comfort ( finna add this video to my comfort playlist )
Some things that were missed on the video or that I had an opinion on bugged me enough to write this comment:
1. 10:31 After beginning credits Joel wakes up and it could be deduced that he was drinking the night before. This together with him waking up to a nightmare and Tess saying "You wanted to be left alone remember?" and the text 20 years later could imply that it was the 20 year anniversary of the death of Sarah.
2. 27:15 The fireflies are quite a large group that has been around since the first years of the outbreak so it isn't unbelievable that many doctors would have ended up, and even seeked to get into a group that is trying to find a cure.
3. 1:02:48 The humvee isn't necessarily or even probably following the group but is returning to home base or some outpost of theirs as the bandits with the mounted sniper and the humvee are for sure the same group.
4. 1:26:41 Here Ellie did try to get the keys to escape as any other option looked to be worse. Joel also isn't just fine as even the controls while playing him are slower and feel more sluggish. It is also implied along the story that Joels questioning tactics aren't anything new to him as him and Tommy have been doing all kinds of bad stuff during the 20 years.
5. Joel's end decision might have been weighed by how incompetent the fireflies have turned out to be. Marlene losing almost all of her group, multiple moves and the quick choice to immediately perform the surgery. He might have also been weighing if the world even was worth saving after all they both had encountered. Still it clearly wasn't an easy choice as seen by Joel's reaction in the elevator and after shooting Marlene.
Awesome video and it is great that people still make videos of this game.
Thanks for being kind and giving constructive criticism 🖤
About the 5th point, I always wondered what if Fireflies for a second acknowledged the struggle Joel and Ellie made to reach them, be more human, spoken to them about the progress they made in finding the cure, the vision they had, and use Force only as the last resort.
Definitely. Plus they were just plain stupid, there's nothing they would have gotten from carving out her brain that they wouldn't have gotten from a spinal tap. Joan was 100% in the right imo
@@ikramqazi5492One thing that bothered me was that they were ready to take Ellie’s brain out and kill her because it could possibly lead to a cure, there was never a guarantee it would work, and they could have ran some tests on Ellie’s blood or taken samples from the growth on her arm first but they just jumped all the way to taking her brain out.
@@lilylilyfofilly yea that always made me side with Joel. If you have a human subject that "holds the key to finding a cure" then killing her is literally the last thing you would want to do. Like just putting aside the fact that in 2022 we still do not have the capability to create a vaccine for fungal infections.

Would love if they made a game exploring parts of Joel and Tommy's survival in that 20 year gap. Playing through the hectic early years of the outbreak, the extents of what they did to survive, how ruthless Joel in particular would have been, etc. Would be siiick
I'd love it. And also with some other flashbacks of Joel and Sara😍
I would love that, but given Neil’s personal hatred for the character of Joel, I don’t think it will ever happen.

The 2 Things I Had Issues With Was The Pregnant Woman Going Out To The Field And Abby Sparring Ellie.
Other Than That , It's Beyond Perfection.
Plus The HUD For This Game Is 10/10.
It Was The 1st Time I've Seen a Game Being Released Without Graphical Downgrade From The Trailers.
The story, characters, and acting was great, and it looked good. But a 'masterpiece' needs equally great gameplay and possibly be inventive too. TLOU was short, linear, with no vehicles, little gameplay variety or proper puzzles, and a basic RPG/upgrade system - it did nothing new or improved. The gunplay wasn't great, and in general, Uncharted 4 had better gameplay, as TLOU didn't have climbing. 8/10. Not a masterpiece like GTAV or RDR2 - which have vastly superior gameplay/variety, on an open world map - technically in a different league. Not convinced it's technically better than #ResidentEvil4, made 8 years before it.
the work you've done deserves more recognition and respect. well done!
This is really underrated! I love your explanation of the story

This is a great analysis of one of the best games of all time. You are so underrated!!
I started playing this when released, also laughed at the "hardcore drugs" comment, even told my buddy that was sitting with me how Sara's smart-ass reminded me of my daughter. Got to the end of the intro....powered off the game, gave it to him, never played it again. I watched one of the "TLOU the movie" videos on youtube. Brilliant story, but it was way easier for me to stomach by being non interactive. Still constantly cracks my top 5 game list, and I never played it. That's a special game.
Pretty mediocre vid but I do enjoy TLOU content. Some really lazy takes throughout.
12:06 - Why don't you just retake the lines you mess up? Just re-record it man
Even tho i like this game, it's far from being perfect or "Masterpiece" and i can't articulate it well enough before but this video kinda gave me a good idea on why i hate the sequel so much in terms of narratives,
maybe it,s because some of the major plot points in the sequel felt kinda petty and out of place sometimes, like some issue they trying to tackle felt like a bunch of first world country problems, stuff like the love triangle, jesse's cuckery, all of these pararel past relationship and exes between abby, owen, and the pregnant chick who's somehow allowed to go outside,
all of that felt like one of those korean petty and melodramatic romances show, as if those are worth putting a spotlight on in the world where there are much more interesting things that deserve to be focused on, (like when the writing obviously favoring Dina's reveal of getting pregnant with jesse's baby over ellie's revealing she's immune and can potentially save the entire world)-
And stuff like that doesn't fit in at all in the desolate and desperate world, that the first game tried to portray , a land where ppl wouldn't hesitate to kill each other for as simple as food, just like how a post apocalypse should be.
idk if im making sense here, but it felt like the writer's trying to force shove their personal preference instead of thinking what would fit as a sequel, character's motives, and actions felt petty, melodramatic, and overemotional, (most ppl expect survivors in a brutal post-apocalypse world to be more apathetic and self-serving like most of the cast in tlou1), this makes the story very unrelatable and makes it hard for me to get engaged in, and it also probably why ppl just can't get invested in ellie/abby revenge story, that game is just a peak angsty teenager's power fantasy.
I agree on some points and I disagree on others but that’s okay! Part 2 isn’t for everybody. Though I can agree that part 1 is better than part 2.
@@ImGardenGnome Ik it's a late reply, but I really recommend the GCN "everything is wrong" video on tlou 2 he literary took words out of my mouth. it's a long yet entertaining video, really inspire me to train my critical thinking skills by making my own essay videos

Great video, dude! Seeing you had less than 500 subscribers was a surprise, the production value on this is crazy.
Around the 48:20 mark, I was waiting for you to talk about the QTE to then have to sprint to save Ellie from the bandit wrestling with her. That was a real defining moment for me. The rush and anger I felt steamrolling towards that bandit, and the relief I felt afterwards? In that sequence, I knew for sure Joel was growing attached because I sure was!
Hoping more success comes your way, man. We need those subs up up. Amazing work!

From 2012 to 2022 I had stopped playing games all together. The 360 was the last modern console I had.
Then in late 2022, I decided to get back into gaming after not doing so for 10 years. I dived into nostalgic gaming first, n64, ps1 etc. then Decided to get something more “modern” lol. And got a ps3 so I could play all my retro games with ease on it.
I got my ps3 from a whatnot auction and the guy threw in a copy of the last of us for supporting his channel.
I was so excited to play this game. It was gonna be my first “modern” for me game I had played since the 2012.
That whole first act with Sarah, Joel and Tommy as it fades from pre apocalyptic to post apocalyptic, that did it. I was hooked after that and I didn’t set the game down for hours. I beat the game in a matter of days, and then decided to play it again on a a harder difficulty about a month later because all the games I was trying to play simply couldn’t compete.
I’ve played the last of us pt1 from start to finish 3 times now and have simply accepted that playing another game as good as this one isn’t going to happen.
I did acquire a ps4 and played through pt 2, and though it wasn’t as good as the first one, I did really enjoy it. I know alot of controversy surrounded it, but I think naughty dog did the best they could for raising the bar so high on pt. 1 and creating an absolute…..masterpiece.
The hbo version of Sarahs death is made really well. But damn the game version is better
The 1st game is a Masterpiece.
The 2nd was an embarrassment for everyone that played it that matters.
The first one was great, but the 2nd one is absolute fucking garbage.
I've watched Sarah's death 10 times
I'm a grown up adult and still fucking cries every single time
waitttt- joels watch broke when they got shot at, does that mean that he forever has the time sarah died on his broke watch
This video is not a conversation about, if TLOU is really a Masterpiece, like it says in the title. Its just a 2 hour recap of the story. Bro we all know the story, we dont need a recap. This video greatly underperformed in my opinion, that was not a good essay :/
