- OK everyone...Hold on!! In this video we push the time boundaries of a typical RUclips video to provide you more insight and share with you a 15 hour day!
We are off to to a wedding at a private residence. We are not only providing sound and lighting for the band, we are also providing sound support for the ceremony. We resist mental flashbacks as we return to a greenhouse tent! Thankfully, it cooled off later on and the tent was comfortable.
We decided to flip-flop our mains and use our PreSonus 328AI cabinets for mains, which put our theory from a prior video to the test, and used one CDL12 for the ceremony which provided excellent coverage for the ceremony. It was fun to hear the 328's working as mains and both worked out great in assigned role for the day.

Stacy at 1:17:20, I know that feeling! We just did an outdoor high school graduation stream/FOH sound on the 24th, I was on site and on my feet for about 10 hours in the middle of a football field on a 90 degree day... by the time the end of the event rolled around my legs and back were toast and pretty much all I was good for was rolling up cables (which is a-okay with me as last year the "help" rolled up cables and I spent the following weekend unwinding a quarter mile's worth of XLR spaghetti).
Thanks for sharing in the pain- hot weather days are really a drag- one would think that it’s cooler in a tent- but that clear ceiling really gave off the heat that day!
Also, know how you feel about the cables- one might think that would be an easy thing to have volunteer help with- but so not the case!

I'm about to make some videos about gigs in Brazil, what do you think?
We said the said the same thing to ourselves just over a year ago...It's a lot of work, but we love doing it! We have some basic goals and principles that we adhere to each gig has a different perspective now...mostly in a positive way, but sometimes things don't always go the way you plan and it can be stressful when you think about how it impacts your channel. For example, we had a couple of really cool gigs that were either cancelled, or we couldn't do. We reminded ourselves that the channel can't be a primary decision tool for our business and gig cancellations, etc. are just part of what we do so get over it!

As someone who hasn't worked in the industry in well over a decade (probably 15 years?) I have to say: some things have gotten a lot easier and more modern over time. The way the subs go together is great, we had to use ratchet straps to secure our stacks. All active is neat too, no more amp racks and big heavy speakon cables. Mixing via an iPad (although not my preference) is something that is amazing to run around the room and make adjustments. I first mixed on analogue consoles and then the early digital ones before I stopped doing it altogether.
And lights! What a godsend RGB LED is. Setting up stacks of PAR 64s, going through folders of color filters and setting the different PARs up according to the rider, lifting it up, realising you put up one color wrongly, taking it down, changing the filter, putting it back up. Then the power distribution and power requirements for those was insane as well. Between 500 and 1000 Watts per PAR. LED truly is a game changer here, particularly full RGB. Only downside: being on an open air stage in the winter was nice and toasty in the old days :P
Things have come a long way in terms of technology. But I guess some of the old problems never change (scheduling, delays, venues not equipped as described etc.) :) Love your videos!
The power thing though, to your point, has become SO much less of an issue. It used to be that the lights used as much if not more power than the PA system in some instances. (plus the heat they put out 🥵). And not to mention the weight, as well as dimming and color changing capabilities of modern lights, plus wireless DMX. It takes a fraction of the cost, weight, and power consumption, to have a WAY more impressive light show nowadays. Also, I have recently upgraded to the QSC KLA speakers which only pull 2.6 Amps each, so you can easily have 2 per side, plus 2 subs per side, and need only 2 circuits with room to spare. You can run lights, fans, guitar pedals, and a handful of other things off those services because none of that stuff draws any power to speak of. Suffice it to say, as someone who just got in to the industry 15 years ago, I got to experience the tail end of the world you're talking about, and also experience the transition into the world we're at now!
@@djjazzyjeff1232 Oh yeah, light typically used quite a bit more power than the PA actually. 10kW of PA don't draw 10kW from the wall unless you put a sinewave through them. But 10kW of PAR-64 draw that once you hit the light faders :) Running those 63A cables to the dimmer racks was no fun either.
It sounds like you got in at just the right time, early enough to still get the experience of the "old world" and late enough not having to deal with it for too long, haha. I bet it makes you appreciate all these modern amenities so much more :)
@@XTJ7 Oh 100% it does. I was probably about 15 when I started getting in to music enough that mom n dad were like "ok, this isn't just a phase" and then as I'm sure you can imagine, our family friends their age who used to play in bands graciously offered to help and loan us gear. So we had the big Par Cans and a PA for vocals and kick drum only (no subs).
Then we went to watch other bands on the weekends (we still do that but an open weekend is extremely rare nowadays) and were like oh man, we're living in the dinosaur age using these old rockers' gear lol. We got away from the Par Can lights immediately, but we still weren't fast enough to get in to the digital age of PA age, so we rocked a Mackie 32 Channel, plus 150ft analog snake the size of a garden hose and a rackload of compressors and gates and effects, for probably way too long.
Today, we run lights off a laptop wirelessly which take virtually no power Our PA is all powered and scalable to go from 100ish person bar up to 1000+ outdoors plus draws a fraction as in the past also. Our Mixer is smallest digital Midas board which has more features and capabilities than an entire truck-load of rack gear had 25 years ago, and carries all the channels through a cat-5 to the stage, and/or can be controlled wirelessly with a tablet.
Suffice it to say, I appreciate these things more than someone like the 21 year old dude in my band can. Fun story: one of those first ever backyard gigs we did, there were a total of maybe 30 people there, and he was one of them at what must've been age 9 or so. He had no interest in music yet, fast forward to today, and he's in my band and we just played a show last night. Crazy how life works out some times.

I see you have a work light on stage during strike. One of my better, though rather expensive, investments, is a Dewalt battery powered work light. I went with Dewalt because I have several of their battery powered tools and a half dozen batteries. Really handy when doing an outdoor gig and I need light after I pull power.

We have seen these and they are great- especially not needing power at the end… (we’ve used our van for that purpose!).
It’s something on our list, but at the end of the night, one more thing to have to recharge!

Another source of light that I have, is a nice bright LED light on the back of my truck. It's switched with the box interior lights. Really is nice for after dark loadouts.

01:10:32 I use a couple of songs for testing the Gear. one of them is "I Will Remember by TOTO" a few weeks ago i had a ±20 heads BIGG BAND on stage. One of the guy's singed to me to put up the volume of the track. They played along with the track it' was really a surprise ( it's a Jazz band ) so this is not there kind of music they play. As this song is my favorite it gave me goosebumps from head to toes hearing them play this 🙂and this is also a sign that the equipment was working good 🙂

I have two of the spider boxes. Bought them used. Don't use the 30A twist lock on one, so replaced that outlet with a dedicated panel mount power meter. Gives me Voltage, Frequency, Amps, Watts, and Watthours. Since I link the spider boxes, I put the metered one first in the link to see my total power draw. Fire Marshall loves it as it provides GFCI locally for all use, except the 30A 250V outlet on one of the boxes. I initially put the watt meter in for use on my generator to monitor draw, so I don't overload the 30A 250V breaker in the generator. Power to subs can be reduced to cut power draw when running on limited power.. Checking power on setup is only half of the story. Check the power during the show as some long smaller extension cords can create brownout conditions for the sound. The 50A 250 service is the way to go when available.
Edit, Many consoles have very aggressive noise filters on the power supplies. This tends to trip GFCI's. Due to this, I run a small distro off the 30A 250V outlet on the spider box that does not have a GFCI, and feed a pair of 20A breakers and dual outlets just for the FOH.
Never had trouble with the fire Marshall over this at events as I explain the console noise filter has high RCD and with a GFCI there is no show. The unit is grounded and bonded. They generally understand this is pro gear, not home electronics and only handled by a pro. Offer the fire Marshall the meter to check the gear. Most often they won't bother as that indicates you already checked the power.

2. We decided to switch up a bit with our speakers based on a previous experience at a gig. However, we learned that our theory was technically incorrect and that the the 328's we used in this video had a wider vertical coverage. Thank you for the compliment! As far as the lighting height, sometimes it depends on where we are able to place the lighting trees. If I recall correctly at this gig, we chose to place the light trees on the ground and they were extended as high as they go. If we weren't concerned about taking up too much stage space, we may have placed the trees on the stage....so it just depends. It also depends on the stability of the stage....if it's bouncy or unsteady, we typically avoid placing the trees on the stage as we have now just created an additional risk to guests of having a light tree fall and possibly injure somebody.

It seems like the speaker choice ending up working fine (using the 328 instead of the CDL12). However I'm not sure if the logic behind the choice was a sound one. If I understood it correctly, you were worried about the CDL12 bouncing sound off the angled ceilings. But the 328 have a wider vertical coverage (60°) vs the CDL12 (20° each - so even two boxes would only be 40°). So the 328s were sending more volume towards the ceiling than a single or pair of CDL12 would have. Plus, the 328 only have a horizontal coverage of 90° vs the 120° of the CLD12, so the CDL12 would have been a better choice for the spoken word portion of the event. Honestly I think you could have gotten away with a single CLD12 on each side - at least strictly from a speaker coverage point - I don't know if a single CDL12 could be loud enough.

Your math is correct Brian...I was looking at more from the actual look of the cabinets and it's deceiving. We do notice the benefits of the horizontal coverage of the CDL cabinets, especially with bands on IEM's.
The GREAT thing you have going for you is the local bands Trust you and love what you do for them and they can charge enough to have you do their sound . Out here in Northern Calif bands are lucky to get $ 500.00 for a wedding yet they will pay a DJ $ 2500.00 for the same gig . Also the level of bands you work with are so much higher than what we have up in the North State(Shasta County) . If we do a Wedding we are lucky to get More than $ 500.00 . So we don't do lots of them . But like you said if you don't have the power you can't plug in . I have had on more than one ocasian get to the gig and they hand me a 16ga 500 foot cord and say here is the power you asked for(How do you go from a 50amp 240v single phase power to a 15 amp plug 500 feet away ? ) I think in the last 10 years I have done maybe 15 weddings . Have Fun and Stay safe .
We are very fortunate to live in a state which has a talented pool of musicians. The drummer actually moved to Minnesota from Brazil because of the musical opportunities here compared to other places. (Same goes for a others that we know and have worked with)
We realize how lucky we are when we do out of state gigs with groups- the reason they are hired to go so far is because of the lack of quality around us…
I guess where you are, better to be a DJ! (At least they don’t have to carry monitors!)
@@thesoundcouple But they do carry monitors . 4 of them on a normal set up for some reason . Most are Wannabe's and have no clue what they have or what they are doing . They saw another DJ at a big show using the same gear and forgot to ask if he owner that gear or was renting it . Most of the time the big boys rent it all . It is just like asking a band , WHY do you you have to have a line array system when a point source system would work 100 times better . They will tell you , because the other guys are using one . They have NO CLUE !

Such a shame we can't get any 328s now. We have two subs, two 15s and two 12s. A couple of 328s would of been perfect for monitors. You two have a great set-up! I've rather enjoyed watching your videos over the last couple of weeks after finding your channel, it's really funny to watch as we go through so many similar things with our gigs like you to do, and we're a couple too. Hi Bart and Stacy, I have noticed in a few videos now about your lighting stands. you have the braces a little high and just wanted to mention that it gives me the willies thinking what could happen in they fell on someone. I Totally understand about the footprint stuff however for me safety takes over footprint no matter what... I also do Lighting and Sound and enjoy your videos alot... Keep up the awesome work
Thanks for pointing that out! I guess the only thing we can say is that we have only had one stand fall over that an intoxicated person knocked over several years ago.....so far, we have been lucky!
A quick way to tune Drum kits quickly Is the 4 4 combination Tighten the four up at the top and loosen the four at the bottom and the drums will come into tune quite quickly

There is such a big difference between the CDL12 and the 328s.....
The CDL12 is outstanding...
They are a secret weapon for us for sure....sorely underrated and not understood. This was part of the reason why we started doing some videos because we wanted to show what these could do! Our comrades are still confused by our choice because we don't use a 2 or 3 letter named speaker....that's ok, I am tired of trying to explain!

The Ultimate Support mic stands are slick too...I wonder if the Ultimate bottoms would thread on to Atlas tubes.

The Rock n Roller. I have one myself, it's SO amazing especially when you've got to schlep gear quite a ways from where you can park your rig. Which happens.
I have RubberMade carts that fold up nicely but not really what you need for lawns and bumpy walks.
@djjazzyjeff123 Agreed! We just did another private residence gig where we had to go about a half football field length from van to stage- and the Rock n Roller was very useful! Know that there are a few models of these- some have just the hard tires.

Great, video, love that you show everything, lovely couple, i have one question, what you prefer between the Presonus mixer and Behringer x32 ? why do you like it more to work with the Presonus ? The PA sounds Awesome over the Camera Mic. Great Job...you guys
We use the PreSonus more because of the rack mixer component which we love. I think it arguably sounds a bit better as well, but if Behringer offered a similar two space unit, we would check it out. Oh, and PreSonus does a better job of software support/updates, but the mixer firmware historically has been noticeably more buggy (much better now).

I haven’t saw this in your videos previously. Can you talk about how much actual time for driving, set up, the gig and tear down you have? Also what are some considerations to client costs.
Thanks for bringing this up. Yes, we can definitely share more information around these topics in future videos. In general, we expect 2-3 hours for setup and 2 hours for tear down. We have a tech rider that we can provide that covers more detail of setup/tear down, electrical requirements and other logistics. Most of the time, we are hired by the band, so we work under their guidelines which typically will account for our needs as well.
@@thesoundcouple cool it be nice to see what people charge. I know area plays a huge role in pricing. I see some of these people doing 10-14 man hours and using 45-55k in equipment charge only a few thousand
@@wccw8431 Yes, we have heard of that as well. In the end, that approach can hurt us all. Our perspective is admittedly skewed because we are no longer directly competing for work, so I realize that perspectives can be different. However, the one thing that doesn't make sense is how you can run a successful business with an upside down business strategy with deep investments with low ROI. Yes, the gear does matter to a point, but there are more important considerations to being successful. Most clients could care less if you use a $99 mic vs. a $999 mic.

I believe for this gig, I think we ran with 5 mixes. 1 for keys, 2 for vocals, 1 (2 monitors) for horns, and 1 for drums.

That’s a tough question for me to answer as opinions will be many, but here is an answer if I was going to look and budget was biggest factor…I would consider looking at Alto or Behringer. I have seen them both and I have to say I was pretty impressed. However, I can’t speak to their reliability or service. I think that a big factor that people don’t account enough for is service. PreSonus does an outstanding job with service …if you have a problem, they actually have a service department that respond to customers and will fix it.

Thanks for the brilliant video! Bart, why you decided to use just one speaker placed on the side, for the ceremony? Is it not a bit weird to hear the sound not comming approximately from the direction where the source is located? As a guest close to the speaker, i would not have been happy if the sound was only in my right ear and the speaker in front of me ;-)
Hi Patrick - there were a few reasons between logistics and budget, but we worked with the wedding coordinator on placement and they were completely on board. The coverage was just fine and nobody got angry :)
I'm sure you've covered this a million times, but I don't see it in your gear list. What stands are you using for the lights? I can't seem to find good ones that will go that high. I've also been eyeing the 32R, seem better suited for my 5-piece band since it has a ton of Aux outs than the XR32.
We use Ultimate TeleLock stands for lighting. The 32R would be a fine choice - very compact with tons of features!

We do not! Never been a fan of it and finally someone was able to describe why. Look for Michael Curtis’s channel as he he has an excellent video covering this topic.
nice video... is it normal that the input gain is so low with presonus? or with live music?
Are you speakers at 0 db or at max volume?
We run our cabinets at 0dB....we were not pushing the system at this gig....in a tent and managing volume. Low input gain is somewhat relative, but we typically aren't running our channels over 28dB (vocal mics).

Would it be good if you did 1 CDL sub per side and 2 328 per side and subs in middle and have drink sliders on or put the subs under the stage
That sounds like a lot of work! For weddings, we find that the system doesn't need to be maxing out the volume capacity of a room. We try to keep them at most, a mid volume so everyone can enjoy! The last thing you want to do at a wedding is to clear out the room because it's too loud.

We use the PreSonus 328AI for the floor monitors. The drummer was using the PreSonus HP2 for his in ears.
Bert if you want to test you system in the video and I'm sure you know this but you can use the you tube music library without getting a copyright strike.

are you running live stage or is that the PA system DAW?

How do you guys find your gigs? Do the bands contact you? The event? And are you a part of the bands payment or separate? Seattle is getting back to live gigs and I want to do more with my setup. I just got a 50amp spider box. I normally Dj weddings and do audio for corporate events through "that" company.
Hi Hal - most of our gigs are through word of mouth, but we are fortunate enough to establish some key relationships so most of our business is recurring now and we are hired through the bands in most cases.
Great job with a small system, 4+4 Linearray and Truss systems would be installed in Turkiye. No need for big systems.... Thanks for sharing the video...

Typically, the bands we work with are contracted for 3 hours of music.
How far can you set mixer settings with the ipad standard wifi ?
It really depends on the gig....we can sometimes go up to 100 ft or more!

You need to understand that these musicians are playing together sometimes for the first time at these gigs...so there are spots where all of the vocal parts will not be addressed.

We primarily use Chauvet and Blizzard lighting products. I am guessing that you are referring to the Chauvet 4 Bar Tri's used for front lighting.

I just got back into doing sound for a local classic rock band after 2 years and another band break up and covid. Did my 1st gig at a open mic night at a State Park and got great reports on how everything sounded. That was a freebie to get to meet the band and see there needs etc. and show them what I could do for them. Anyways got my first paying gig in August with them another outdoor gig. Looking forward to working with this band .

I can see I'm going to be all alone with this comment, but as someone who suffers from motion sickness, the "chest cam" footage is fairly unwatchable for me. I don't think you should change if it doesn't bother anyone else, but I did want to mention it. The rest of it was great!
No problem...we get it and even though the GoPro is cool to get first person footage, we can see it becoming fatiguing. For our typical video, much of this would have been chopped but we kind of took a let 'er roll approach for this one. We try to balance each video in footage and the GoPro is selectively used.
Sorry. Had to stop watching after 15min. GoPro footage was making me feel sick.
Always trying different angles- try a different video- not all of ours has the go-pro motion!
