The Sound Couple - The Glory of Good Gear!
The Sound Couple is off to day two of weddings! We are little on the tired side on this gig, so our gear needed to come through for us, which it did!
The flexibility of our PreSonus system and the rock solid performance of our Shure wireless systems came through when we needed it! For the first time, we implemented our remote speaker using our Shure PSM system to a remote speaker! What a time saver!
Check out the links to the gear that really came through for us on this gig!

The Sound Couple heads off to a wedding in a classic setting....a good ol' brick building! Did we ever think we could miss the sounds of an old brick building?....the answer is yes!! We cover a lot of topics including our journey with the Shure PSM 300's which we put through another upgrade by adding a combiner and paddle antenna. The Sound Couple is back again with the band that kicked off their 3 day series of gigs. We were dragging a bit for this one since we had a big show and late night and we were off again early to this gig. Thankfully, this one was inside and a bit more laid back but a bit more execution pressure because it was a surprise birthday party with a guest singer! As always, we learned some lessons and ...

The SC - We Remember Now...It Doesn't Sound Good
Hello Bart and Stacy! Wow, Stacy on keys and Bart on drums and guitar ... let the band run sound and you can get a guest spot instead! And listening to Bart singing high harmony .... Stacy on vocals :D It's a pity you can't get those Chauvet light sticks in a shorter height that you could attach to microphone stands :)
The only thing I envy from you in the United States is the organization at work and the respect that the people you interact with have for you. Here in Italy, where I live, you have to be smart and go and look for the technical sheets and basic information before each job or you are always in trouble at every event. Warm greetings from Liguria!
Boah this venue was really a kind of mess to load in….but another great video! Thanks for sharing
Definitely lots of clutter in the loading doc...we had to work around the flowers, etc. It all adds up!
I understand your concern about safety loading out late at night. For that reason, both my associate and I actually have a concealed carry permit. I hope we never have to draw our weapon, but it does help you feel a bit more confident in those situations.
Understood…can’t eliminate risk, but there are gigs in areas that we just won’t do anymore. So we take more of an avoidance approach.
Had a gig recently where I was expected to be a VJ and a DJ of sorts. The VJ thing we didn't do. I managed the DJ thing 11th hour under very high stress, and I made it clear that my price doubles next year if they pull that again!
I hate harmonica's soo much I was mixing this one band a few years ago and the lead singer had the same set up but the volume diffrence between his singing & the harmonica was soo massive I had to watch him closely to turn the mic down every time he went for the harmonica & what do you know one time I'm looking down he goes from singing to harmonica & blows as hard as he could & blows 2 of my hi's halfway thru the show :(
Weddings, one time event dreamers who have grand visions, not aware of reality. Our outdoor rate is $ oh a wedding? yes that is $x1.5. Under right circumstances, paddles will reach one end of a stadium to the other. For UGA grad orch on floor solo trumpet in the nosebleed its a 30 second solo.
Once again, The Sound Couple illustrates how professionalism in the production industry develops from attention to detail, the carefully considered purchase of top quality equipment, a willingness to invest hard work at every gig, and the necessity of assessing what happened and what could have improved a gig, once the rush of the set-up and tear-down is complete. The benefit to those of us who strive to develop our own professionalism comes when we watch Bart and Stacy and learn from what they allow us to see. In this video, the use of wireless transmission to a remote speaker comes to the fore. This is an excellent example of the kind of thoughtful use of existing equipment that solves a problem and makes it easier to accomplish the operational goals at a particular venue. As always, we appreciate the willingness of The Sound Couple to take us along to this wedding event.
Talking about gear investments, wondering if you've made much use of those tower lifts you got the other year? They're something I've considered at times myself but can't really justify them. I invested a lot the other year in way too much heavy duty trussing for some big moving lights I acquired and in the end I'm too lazy to set it up so I just place the lights on the ground facing upwards! Missed the mark myself on that one. haha
Good question! The lift investment has not paid off. I am glad we have them, but the type of gigs we do with the budgets we are working with doesn't align for most gigs....this is a change. The good news is that the lifts ARE an investment as we will not lose money when we are ready to sell. It wasn't a spontaneous purchase, but if we would have waited 6 months, we probably would have realized we don't need them. It is fun when we do use them!
I just did a wedding this weekend in an industrial type of location. I’m a solo sound person. At least you guys got to ride in the elevator… I had two cart loads to go to the second floor in a freight elevator, where you have to send it up and then run up the steps to get to it on the other end. Ceremony in one room… cocktail 🍹 hour in another… and DJ in another room. Love watching your videos!!
Ouch! It's amazing the surprises we get stuck to deal with as if no big deal to others!
Great episode!
Thank you!
Being in the audio/electronic/music industry in Nashville for 40 years (been retired for 8 years but have a weekend warrior band & duo) I can relate to basically all of your videos lol. I own all of the sound equipment, and try to be as efficient as possible with our rig. In fact, we are at the point now where we have no live amps on stage. Electronic drums, keys, guitar, bass, all go directly to the console, and everyone is on in ears. We try to keep a small as possible profile with gear. Some bands dont like a setup like ours, they'd prefer to use amps, live drums etc, but given what we do it works great for us. As for your comment on the load in and working around people, we have a rule that we are set up, have sound check at lease a minimum of an hour before the event starts. There is nothing worst than being in a rush to set up, and working around people. Makes for a longer but less stressful day. Really enjoy your channel!
This kind of trouble to loading and unloading equipments we have the same problem in Brasil, but we always keep our manual forklift truck near.
Nice if it's handy!
You two work very hard. May I suggest getting a ramp which can be used on the van‘s side door to roll equipment down to street level as well as on the rear doors to roll or push equipment up to the loading dock level. Setting up and tearing down for several back to back gigs is already hard enough on our bodies. Our folding aluminum ramp saved us a lot of energy over the years and took the edge off everyone.
Agree! Everything we load is on wheels and use ramps or trailer ramp doors. Best decision we made, saves on wear and tear on our teams bodies, makes for faster load in/out.
If we had more on wheels, for sure! Intentionally, the only gear we have with wheels are the subs. The subs are a 50lb lift each.
Stacey & Bart thanks for a great vid. Love seeing those “stop drinks on the subs” being used. Such a neat little addition.
Thank you! Appreciate it! We do share a video of us making those if you are interested!
Just to be absolutely clear - Stacy is badass. She is one of the nicest BAs though. And Bart is awesome too. Focused, driven, effective and efficient. They make a fabulous pair of sound professionals!
Oh. And did you notice that she did everything in this gig in a skirt?! How amazing is that?!
Thank you for your kind words! Bart responding here and I know I am very lucky....there is nobody that can pack better!
I am a fan of you, I love that you are organized in your work. Greetings from Lima - Peru!
Thank you very much! Thanks for watching!
Pretty cool I hope I'll never need a remote speaker but that was a great idea.
You just never know what you'll need when! Good to have the info...
I use VocoPro wireless speaker transmitter and receivers.

Hi, love your channel. So it looks like you've committed with the iPad/ laptop for your control. I still use the studio live sc32 console with the iPad. I like the feel of the faders but having the iPad is great. Thank you.

On the Silent Line Check, is that mains down and listening on headphones? Thanks for the sharing of the video. Go Stacy! (Got to have a Plan B, and sometimes a Plan C.)
Yes, the mains were silent.
We have run wireless speakers systems for years. Love using it. We gotta get the two of you back on the DJ Round Table Show. You guys rock!
As always, learning from the DJ's as well! That's where we got this trick!
You two are a great team.
....we are still married after all of these gigs!
I'M GLAD!!! TO SEE YOU AGAIN I WANT TO CRY FOR JOY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING MY DEAR !!??
psm 300 wireless speaker idea is amazing been using it for couple of years now only issue i have is forget to change the batteries lol
We went with the Shure rechargeable. They cost too much but we would consider them more of an investment. We have some pushing 6 years and still hold a good charge!

I agree on the Origination Video.
Appreciate that....we will consider that for a future video!
Any woman in pro audio is badass. Stacy is particularly badass, though!
Thanks!😊 💪
so much work, and its so easy to get in a argument, just need to relax and take it easy, things must be done to complete the Job, Well done sound couple.
well said!
Paddle antennas are even better with an antenna combiner, those usually amplify the signal and avoid lots of interference problems. Staggered loadout ... it's that risky over there? I forgot to load a couple of brand new mic stands in branded bags a couple of weeks ago, they were left leaning against the gate of our apartment complex street side in a very busy shopping street. Came back 12 hours later and thought they would have disappeared, but they were still there. Yesterday I accidentally dropped a 50 MOP bill (USD 7) in Macao, a lady shouted to get my attention, picked up the bill and handed it to me. Crazy how different things can be. I live in China 😂 You guys do a great job, I really enjoy your videos. But you could really use a van with a loading ramp or hydraulic platform with the amount of gear you're now moving. Having said that, Stacy is awesome, hats off ! And Bart has some skills on those drums 👍
Thanks for your comments! We do have a combiner and have been desperately attempting to convince the band in investing as well, but they are resistant. Yes...Minneapolis is sadly climbing the ladder being one of themost dangerous cities in the US. At a place like this, the concern would mostly be dealing with any drunk clowns. In a perfect world, we would have that truck!
@@thesoundcouple Actually a ramp might be an interim solution with the current van.
Hi sir view from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰❤❤❤❤
Hello there!
Olá Bart e Stacy parabéns por mais um ótimo trabalho realizado. Carlos - São Paulo - Brasil.
Obrigado por assistir Carlos!
Progression Bart requires speculation, your on the right path technology is playing a role in today’s industry. It also gives you the opportunity to use these additions and make choices that a productive and your more proactive in your business, people like that it shows commitment to the industry and the venues we all work and live in shows them you’re here for the long haul, not some fly by nighter that doesn’t care enough about the job to make that commitment. Well Done Bart & Stacy keep the ingenuity up ✌️🇺🇸🇦🇺
Very well stated Peter....we do a lot of iterative improvements that nobody notices but it allows us to do our job better. Some of which are just to survive the increasing pressure on more requirements and higher expectations as everyone is getting more squeezed...Unfortunately, it doesn't alway result in a higher budget, but that is getting better too over time. Some of this results in us not taking or seeking out some gigs.
❤❤🌹🌹
Know your worth Bart good operators =good money At the end of the day Bart, you may not get all the work, but you will get the work worth doing, keep your chin up guys rock on 🤘
We keep telling ourselves that a lot....it takes time to work it through the system. We feel that at a certain level the entertainment contributors all need to do better. A client will not question and pay huge dollars for flowers and a venue and will want to cheap out on meals for the entertainment...if you got to the end of this video, the flowers still won!
Onya Bart, can’t keep a good man down ✌️🤘🤘🤘
Rock on!
We have a venue in north orlando that you have to climb two flights of stairs. All staff has to because the venue won’t let equipment ride the elevator. So it’s a BIG up charge passed on to the wedding couple by all the vendors. We hire two hands to just carry up at the start and carry down at the end. Similar size system to yours.
That's a big hurdle! We feel the same way about DT gigs...it's getting harder for us to support these as well without charging a premium.
what case are you using for your mixer ?
We use a Road Ready case. It's been holding up well and they are by no means premium, but we also are the ones hauling it so we are as careful as we can be.
I love your guy's videos keep them coming I just had one question what is the most used wireless DMX dongle that you like to use that is an everyday workhorse that gives you less issues and is worth the bang for the buck
We are sticking with our Donner DMX's....however, we recently switched to a more powerful DMX transmitter to save us a bit of time and we hope is more reliable....but overall, no huge complaints relying wireless DMX.
@@thesoundcouple thanks been looking for a solid DMX wireless receiver and transmitter
@@jamesalan7041 We just picked this up in part because we kept breaking the lipstick stye transmitters that come with the Donners. Now we have this one mounted and it's always ready to go and it can adjust the signal strength. www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQQ9WJKQ?psc=1&ref=product_details
This gig log could have be named "NYE 2023 A-La-CARTe"
That's for sure!
Great job! I really like your channel! Which remote control do you use?
Thanks! Not sure what you are referring to with remote control, but we typically use an iPad for remote mixing.
Amazing 👍 the video is very inspiring for me, who wants to start a small scale sound system rental business. For FOH using a 3way or 2way system? Hope your business is successful, ♥️from Indonesia🇮🇩
When it comes to a lot of events, I notice folks bring an overkill PA a lot of the time; I think they either like to make work for themselves, or they do it to try and showcase what they have, in the hope someone spots them and wants to book them. I do get the line of thinking with it, but I think bringing the right rig for the gig is the better way to go. Most of the events I have done recently have been with a relatively small rig with a Martin Audio Blackline X10 and X115 per side. I could bring a lot more rig, but I don't see the sense in it, personally. Line arrays aren't the answer to everyone's problems, though I do see folks using them when a point source solution not only would have sufficed, but would have also been a better solution.
There are a lot of factors to consider...for us, we are way past the trying to impress anyone and we prioritize using the gear that works for us....which always means concessions. In our perfect world, things would likely look much different. For example, we do like our van, but we would love having a bigger truck with a ramp!
Be careful Bart they spit !
Ahhh...thanks for the tip!
I always train my people "Stage left - stage right. We don't care!!" We always refer left and right from audience's perspective, so I am totally with you on that!! We don't need any more confusion in this world of running XLR stuff!
Regarding the confusing setup... are you SURE that the second-from-the-top is your true outputs from the Yamaha? I would have thought that the top unit where the inputs 1 and 2 are, actually have the outputs (one has a red XLR connector). As the second box has NOT inputs that are visible - possibly an extender box? So in my theory, if you would have plugged YOUR main outputs from YOUR mixer into the top two connectors maybe it would have worked? It does definitely seem weird!
Thank you for your additional insights....We were looking for the the venue techs to help us, but they didn't know anything either....we were on our own!
@@thesoundcouple That happens!
"Swamped in reverb!" Once in a while my friend Danny who is Vietnamese, needs me to cover a gig for him. The thing about the Asian community is they want to be totally swamped in reverb, and even when I over apply FX to their voice, they always ask for more! I swear I could pack up, go home, and stand outside my door and still hear the trail ending of the voice from the last song! Crazy!
The older I get the drier my mix gets!
Really cool setup, I do suggest to place your GFIC units at your distribution center. The reason it to protect the complete cable drop. So if you develop an issue in the cable run the complete circuit is protected from electrocution. You should see all the new electric codes on outdoor boxes it crazy.
In our experience dealing with GFI's at the source, they are not reliable. In two occasions electricians needed to swap them out because they kept tripping.
@@thesoundcouple What was causing them to trip? I hate the darn things myself.
@@robertnorris4642 We really don't know. Once with our system only and another time we were on the same 50amp breaker as the caterers and they tripped it first. GFI's can be very sensitive.
