The Sound Couple - Casino Tuesday!
Hello Bart and Stacy
Hi!
This is exactly why I stopped doing weddings. It never fails, there could be no one there yet with 500 seats available and 90 year old uncle joe and aunt ethel will invariably take the seats or table right in front of a PA stack and stick their heads inside of a PA horn and bitch cuz its too loud. Not to mention the bridezilla factor, it's just not effing worth it.
Hey y’all! I hope it’s been going well for you both! I was wondering if y’all have any suggestions on how to get gigs?
We did it through networking. I used to do a lot more club work and had a house system install for a few years that allowed me to get to know a lot of musicians....did a good job, and it lead to more work. Also network with other similar sound companies in our area...come busy season, there is always a band in need of production and we will refer each other (we have a local sound company FB group). So for us, the majority of gigs we get were sourced from referrals or knowing the bands.
@thesoundcouple ok, right on! Thanks for the info!
Could you create a panel on the rear of the power distro for the separate Edison circuits versus the SOO cord and metal boxes? That could maybe clean that up a good bit.
It would...we already had these boxes built and modified to accommodate the distro...there are pros/cons of this design.
That band was really good, very rare. Sound was great too.
We are lucky!
From the musicians side of it, I can honestly say that corporate gigs are wonderful! I am wondering, though, how you decide what to charge? I know what to charge for the music side but, just getting into the audio support side of things, I’m finding it difficult to figure out where to set prices in order to be competitive? Thank you for all your hard work and all the knowledge that you pass along!
That's a really tough question to answer....so many factors that it's not a one size fits all. If you really don't know, then there is so much for you to figure out yet beyond price. You just need to focus on getting yourself out there and not worry about the price and get yourself established. When I started, there were even gigs I did for free...I am not suggesting that's a requirement, but that's what I did to get myself out there (granted these were people I knew and it was a group effort). Your abilities and value will then drive what you can charge and what you are comfortable doing for the money. In some cases, we have clients that pay more for us, and others that use us as a last resort because they know they will be paying more. So the range can vary and we try to work with people and know that it will likely lead to more gigs if we take a gig for less. We are in to relationship building which makes it easier on everyone.
@@thesoundcouple thank you for the reply. I’ve already done some gigs, usually just hiring on as part of the group so getting part of the groups pay. As our system grows and we invest more money into our equipment I know I’m going to have to move beyond being “part of the groups pay” and becoming a fledgling sound company. And so the transition from musician to sound company continues. Again, thank you.
@@RedHotSmokinAces Another perspective to share is that this is a part-time business for us so we were afforded to develop over time...at least at a pace that wasn't as stressful.
how big of an event can 4 of these handle?
That depends on many factors....but in general - small to medium in a typical environment for a typical live band that needs to cover 100 ft deep at 90 or so dB. We have a video where we used them at a gig.
@@thesoundcouple Just picked up 4 for 400 a piece! so far so good testing. but have not set them up on my digital mixer for best sound. the throw is pretty impressive. cant wait to get them out on 2 yorkville 801p
@@djizzynyc Nice! That's a good price too!
Advise from a 51 yrs old schooler, Always place a board under subs when on grass surface. The humidity of the ground will shorten the speakers lives.
Not bad advice...thanks!
Hi Bart. A general question about subs. When you have large gigs with 4+ subs or when you centre them in front of the stage & then mount your top boxes stage L/R - do you ever consider a cardioid set up? (with phase inversion & delay etc)? For bigger stages with split speaker - do you add any delay between the tops & subs to accomodate the crossover point (signal) and the distance between the physical boxes? I’ve seen posts from people like Daniel Kharrat & Michael Curtis discussing the pros/cons & was interested in your thoughts. I’m a simple volunteer tech, who only trained on the gear we have and never received formal technical training.
Our perspective is to do what works and sounds good to you. We have a lot of respect for the people that do the math and explain the physics. Our philosophy is that the only thing that the client/even cares about is if it sounds good. To assist with that, we take the approach that we will solve problems as we identify them. We honestly don't experience the problem and don't' feel the need to make a change for change. We are all for experimentation, but honestly, some of these configurations are ugly....does your client really want to see the back of your cabinet sitting in the middle of the floor? For most of the gigs we do, aesthetics is more important than insuring we are running a sub in carded...sure, in the right type of venue...try it out if you are able to experiment. I will use my ears and set delay when we running center subs and go with what sounds good.
Nice Snare and Kick Sound Bart pretty Fat
The great outdoors is a great place to achieve some awesome mix results...thank you!
I see this problems over and over again......thats so sad, to explain peoples who dont understand what it means to mix a show......you cant talk with nobody, cause nobody never gonna understand you........pretty frustrating. How to prevent situations like this ?
Over the history of doing this, we have avoided this by trying to elevate ourselves past these types of gigs. It simply can't be always avoided though...it's going to happen. For us, this one just took it to another level. I was threatened to be sued a couple of times...that was funny!
Hey guys! I was just wondering, seeing your setups, how do you guys get rid of the power alley/valley effect with spacing subs? Thanks!
We don't...we manage them. Mixing is taking in all factors and producing the best output possible. Circumstances will never be perfect and compromise is constant. It's how you manage all of these factors to produce the best results possible is what makes us good at what we do.
Great episode!
Thanks!
My iPad loses connection all the time! My Lenovo and Samsung tablets never drop, nor does my Moto Android phone!
That's really interesting. We upgraded our first iPad Pro because it was really being difficult. After some research, we found that the particular model we had, the chipset had some documented wi-fi deficiencies. Our new one is much better, but we still get the "pulse" meter drops. The wi-fi stays connected, but Universal Control app meters, etc. randomly drop for a second and come back.
I change the DSP settings in my Turbosound IQ18S subs for the same reason!
It does make a difference for sure. Not something we always did, but we are pretty consistent with it now.
Sorry to ask. Are you ok to,share your DSP setting? I have the IQ18S. Thanks
Happy New Year - no grumpy band family members at this event! If you are not using the PreSonus mixer to mix, what are your mics, etc. plugging into? Are you using a rack mixer, ala, X32 or similar? We have the Yamaha QL5 at church, and I am a babe as far as tablet mixing. The subs were really working, thanks for sharing! Bruce in snowy Beaumont, TX.
Apologies if we caused confusion...we were using our PreSonus 32R rack mixer. For mics, we use Sennheiser e604's on toms, Oktava overheads, either Sennheiser, Shure, or EV on kick (depending on application), Shure vocal mics (Beta or SM58). The instruments were direct for this gig, otherwise you typically will use Sennheiser e609's for guitars, or Shure SM57 or 545SD.
What a joy to ride along to a church gig. The Sound Couple began their video gig-log with several detailed visits to this Sunday afternoon adventure. It is wonderful to be back, learning from Bart’s and Stacy’s experiences at this familiar venue.
Hi Dean - glad you were able to come along...it's great feedback to see that we make you feel like you are right there with us!
guys can i have a means to communicate with you
Yes! We can be reached at: soundcouple@comcast.net
Good to see you recovered well from the last gig!
Yes! Thank you!
Those guys were super tight
I'd recommend a samsung tablet for good screen contrast and responsiveness and the Android app stability. (You can get similar sized ones to the ipad and use an s pen) Admittedly I moved into the midas eco system recently but It always used to work flawlessly with my presonus consoles
hello
Hi!
Some of the video is out of focus.
Yes...sorry, that was intentional.
I’ve been doing live sound for 40 years. When I first started, a union electrician tied my tails in. Being young and dumb I just assumed that he would hook me up correctly. I fired up my system just to watch my racks and analog console go up in smoke! Obviously, I couldn’t do the event. Always carry and use a meter to check the power every time before powering up. Luckily you did so. Keep up the great work. I always enjoy your videos!
Appreciate that! Yes...unless it's a standard building Edison outlet, we will check the voltage on an unfamiliar power.
green shirt playing with some oil 🙏🏽
Some good pipes on that one dude he’s got some good range. Good band sounded good.
Pat's great! Thanks...it was a good day and we needed that!
@@thesoundcouplethe size of that crowd is a testament to the quality and design of your set up. I see more manufacturers offering hybrid type (column) systems for the type and size gigs that you and most of us find ourselves at. Point source with the advantage of vertical line array design. The Presonus is a great system. The only thing I would change or add to the Presonus is the ability to adjust the angle instead of being limited by the constant curve. Thanks for the videos!
@@ScottGunMag69 We really appreciate the horizontal coverage with these cabinets, especially for bands on IEM's. It provides a nice even coverage. I have experienced this deficiency mixing on a column array.
Hi Bart and Stacy, what are you using on the drumkit overheads (what microphone)
Oktava MK-012's. We have used them for years!
@@thesoundcouple thank you! Was trying to figure them out by zooming in on the video but wasn't able to. And only about £400 a pair ... Might go for the Rode M5s instead :)
Any idea what guitar the lead singer is using? It looks like an almost holeless acoustic (great for feedback rejection) ... just curious :) Looks a bit like an Emerald X20 ...
@@makingmusiconline2309 Sorry, not sure, but it sounds good!
@@thesoundcouple It really does :)
SM58 is the best mic for me! It's a little difficult for people without singing experience, but once you get the hang of it, it's sounding irreplaceable good.
We have used a lot of different mics over the years (not so much of the newer onslaught of offerings), but we always come back to the tried and true! If there is a mic manufacture'r out there that want's to convince us there are better options....please reach out to to us!
Besides the CDL’s what speakers were you using on the sides. Great mix Bart.
Those were an EV powered speaker (don't remember the model), supplied by the church. They do a nice job for this purpose.
You sounded great as alway! I am curious... What subs are you using? I see the fly connectors on the side of the subs. When I went to purchase the CDL18 Subs from Sweetwater, they don't have any connectors on the sides of these subs? Thank you for all you do!
PreSonus can be tough to understand how and when they choose to stop offering certain products. So the answer is, these are the CDL18s's which are not longer offered. We do have a pair of the Sub18's, and they are great too, but they don't include the fly points. Besides the fly points, the biggest difference we see is that the Sub18's are a bit bigger and have a bit more output. However, the smaller size of the 18s can really be nice when we have limited space. There may be some left over stock of 18's's somewhere and I would not hesitate if you found a good deal on them.
@@thesoundcouple Thank you for the quick response! I don't understand why they would discontinue the CDL18S's w/flypoints. But then who can really figure out what the guys at Presonus are thinking? Whatever their wisdom on these things, I do love Presonus gear! We currently have most everything you have as far as PA gear, and I'm loving them!
They dropped the CDL12's for a time and only offered the 12P's and soon after the 10P's. So perhaps a bean counter was convinced they needed to keep them going but said no to the subs?! Same thing with the 328ai's we own that were sadly discontinued...another awesome cabinet put to an early grave. We absolutely love ours ....they won't die! Glad to hear your system is working for you!
@@thesoundcoupleI'm still sad that the 328s and other Ais were dropped ...haven't seen a a 3way coax for the size and money vs performance anywhere else yet
@@georgesnow Speculating that they had a product consultant that had plans to develop professional grade products..sadly, he passed away and their market focus shifted. If you really look at the AI series of cabinets, very well built and designed and consulted with some of the best speaker designers in the industry...but likely over priced for their typical customer and was likely the reason why they dropped that line.
ชมอยู่...thailand....
Im glad you have witty banter with the guys on the stage, All I get to do is tell people "dont touch that" or "I dont control the lights" lol
Fortunately for us, we are usually able to work with groups we want to work with. It took a long time for us to get there, but we never take it for granted.
I'm a bit confused by the shure paddle antenna pointing out to the crowd. Shouldn't it be pointed at the transmitters (mics)?
Good question Greg! It's because it was just for my PSM300 that only I was using.
@@thesoundcouple got it.

Eyyyyy, te best show ever! You are all fantastic!! The band, The Sound Couple team, etc. 10/10.

Hi folks @ 11:19 do you mean "precipice" (on the edge of something important - a precarious situation)? Anyway, love the day, love the gig and love to the crew.
Nailed it! Sometimes words evade us…
EV side fills ?
Yes! These are supplied by the church. We obviously have the gear to supply our own, but the church volunteers assist us with running the power cables and supplying these speakers to help us get things up and running faster.
22:01 The issue of the iPad dropping connection was also a issue for me, it my be different for Presonus side, but on my m32 I had the same issue, while playing drums and fixing monitors or the FOH, I had to wait when it would do that. I found a fix that on my m32C had a specific IP adress, and on my external router it would change every boot. So I manually typed into my router on the web, to my m32C IP, and have not had a drop since. There are setting in the m32 to have it change the ip every time, or set to what it is every boot up. Thought it help, though may be a different issue!
You know, I am going to say that this is something to try. Not able to link the how or why this would make a difference, but it's easy and not an unreasonable suggestion.
I had a similar problem with my wireless Brother printers in my house set-up with Deco WiFi pods. The Brother printering app likes a fixed adress per printer but my wifi-pod kept changing addresses so every time I wanted to print something thru the Brother app, I wouldn't get connected with the selected printer. Giving at least the printers a fixed adress solved the problem.
@@Richard1977 My mentor in church streaming, wrt cameras and other control equipment likes to have static IP addresses, so the bootup or power crash will not affect the restart - same devices with same addresses. I have to do it here at home for WiFi cameras. Good luck to you all three of you.

Hi Bart and Stacey. Writting from Portugal! keep up the good work. Just one question. From your experience do you think the pecron 3600 would be able to support PA and Lights?

Hey Rick! So true...maybe thats why I quit? 🤣
Would have really ruined the reception if you had muted the PA and demanded that person leave before music could continue. People seem to forget that we are equally entitled to a safe working environment as everyone else. We shouldn’t have to take a job where we are in fear for our safety just because the ‘guests’ have had a few drinks.
