I always feel a tinge of excitement when RUclips notifies me that The Sound Couple is on their way to another gig. I especially enjoy those occasions where Bart and Stacy have a gig at a venue we’ve seen before. Even though a person watching these videos on a regular basis might think that things remain the same at each venue, that is not what usually happens. And, in this case, we have a whole new set of Learning Opportunities at this familiar venue.
Strictly for my own edification, I have noted the following things I learned by watching this video:
    1. There is value in having backups to everything, including transportation. It is quite impressive that Bart has kept his previous van both available and serviceable. Seeing this vehicle in use warms my heart.
    2. Stacy can pack any vehicle to the max. She has certainly done this when loading the backup van for this gig.
    3. Finding a convenient place to load and unload saves time. Also, remembering what you learned the last time you were at a particular venue has great value.
    4. Time and time again, the DeWalt MobileLock has proven its value, derived from the peace of mind it affords.
    5. Even when faced with a bit of noise competition from the AV folks setting up the house PA system, Bart and Stacy extend the kind of professional courtesy for which they are well known.
We also get a good reminder that audio feedback is not a phenomenon that we routinely experience throughout the normal gig attended by The Sound Couple. In fact, as we’ve noted before, Bart goes to great lengths to make certain his tuning of the system, particularly when a band relies on stage monitors, will prevent annoying feedback-no matter how the performers handle the mics.
Later, Bart’s willingness to allow the use of one of their wireless mics, when the AV house PA system’s mic fails, once again illustrates the kind of professionalism that marks The Sound Couple.
    6. I really like those drink sliders for the subs. Please be sure to watch the video when Bart and Stacy built the sliders: “The SC - No More Drinks on our Subs!”
    7. In thinking about the other videos on this channel-most of which I’ve watched a dozen times-this is the first time that I remember seeing Bart plug the output snake (whip) from a band’s in-ear monitors rig into a PreSonus NSB 16.8 stage box connected (chained) to a PreSonus NSB 8.8 stage box, as opposed to connecting directly to the PreSonus StudioLive 32R mixer. As Bart proceeds to explain one of the downsides to this approach-particularly switching from analog to digital and the loss of preamp settings-he also gives us some greater insight into the value of the AVB protocol that PreSonus has adopted.
***Note: Believing that someone who works in the design engineering department at PreSonus watches this video, I hope that person takes note of the value it would be to having the preamp settings retained when switching from analog to digital, or vice versa.***
    8. Once Bart makes these changes, saving this Scene for possible future use whenever the NSB stage boxes are connected to receive the signals from the in-ear monitors rigs’ snake (whip) will be of great value.
    9. As Bart takes us on a tour of the stage, it reminds us of how nice it is to have a band using in-ear monitors. No amps on stage means no stage sound competing with front-of-house sound. This gives the person mixing the band a much more contained ability to achieve a balanced sound from the instrumentalists and vocalists.
    10. While operating the sound system in stereo, Bart shows us how panning the brass instruments to the opposite side of the stage from where the brass are located helps create a more balanced mix. This would especially apply at an indoor venue.
    11. As Bart shows us the sound pressure levels that the sound system provides to the room, it is imperative to note that throughout the many venues where Bart has given us the opportunity to see the measured output of the system, there is a consistency to the sound level. This includes both venues inside a room, as well as venues outdoors.
    12. Tear-down and load-out always has some important consistencies to observe.
    13. During the ride home, Bart discusses some important issues related to the operation of the lighting. He also comments on the assistance they gave the house AV folks.
As Bart and Stacy conclude this video with thanks to those who watch, it is equally important for The Sound Couple to hear our words of “thanks” for all they do to make it possible for us to travel along with them and to learn from their high level of competency. Thanks, Bart and Stacy. Thanks, indeed.

This is common for small corporate gigs, benefit events, etc. where the audience are there to do something other than purely watch/dance to the band. Everyone's around tables, which means dinner/drinks may have been served. The goal of the event planners may not have been a 'taking off' party.

Hi , I saw it go wrong when I saw the old equipment on stage. I wonder if you didn't get the jitters from that sound engineer of their own. I'm quite a bit allergic for howling microphones. Really expected you to intervene much sooner to adjust it and / or offer to use your equipment.
I know it's not a part of the gig but just to quit that awful noise. And then from start to finish there where no mic issues 🙂
Don't get me wrong, older equipment can function perfect if you maintain it like the old VAN 🙂'm using lots of old stuff at the Theater. When I got to the theater I gave everything a thorough inspection and maintenance. And that's why we now have decent working sound system, some of the parts are older than 15 / 20 years.
Fellow sound engineers are often amazed about the sound that they hear from those old speakers.
Anyways it was again a nice Gig you brought to our home screens 🙂

The biggest issue I have with laptop audio is well headphone jacks are starting to become scarce but if you use HDMI it will prefer HDMI for Audio and if it goes to sleep or anything sometimes switches back. And windows in particular whatever audio device was connected last it will switch to unless you change the setting really annoying. But part of this is being an AV tech and knowing that where in the chain am I losing Audio, where have I tested, what has changed. And this is hyper complicated by using user provided devices.
I got around this problem that one place by taking the audio off of the projector but that only works if you're using HDMI and it has an output (or or you have an audio extractor).

    • @thesoundcouple

So if I have a channel set to analog, but at the next gig it's set to network, they are considered two different parameters tied to the source, not the "preamp" value.

Hi! as a band member and owner of my own sound system, after 18 years of playing and being in charge of the sound of my band, i think there´s no need to be kind of rude and make faces and expressions that obviously show some kind of discontent, maybe they were trying to save some money using old gear (mic system, and mixer), or simple gear, i follow you cause you are so professional on what your doing, i wish gigs here in Mexico were that professional (venues and facilities) maybe the next time you can offer some help or advice to the other mates, cause you´ll never know, i mean next time it´s one of us on the other side, let´s hope not, but i think you get my point.

Perhaps some cultural differences, but typically people are expected to competently do their job without negatively impacting others. We will help if asked for it. That feedback was painfully loud and hurt our ears very badly...we rely on them for our profession so I am going to get upset when someone puts our bodies in harms way. I once accidentally put feedback into a musicians monitor and they were upset and he let me know it too. He had every right to be upset with me and apologized for my error. I think about that every time I have someone standing in front of a monitor...and it will never happen again.

I don't know why the "in House" soundies always HAVE to "RING OUT" the place - like it's the same system - It's the same room - the only thing that may need adjustment is the volume once in a while and very minor EQ tweaks (if needed at all) ... it somewhat annoys me when this happens.

Well I can't tell what model that is directly but "The WRR-840A UHF synthesized diversity tuner is a tuner for an 800 MHz band UHF wireless".
It's one thing to be old it's another thing to be illegal!
Not that I'm too concerned we were kind of scammed out of wireless microphone and TV frequencies so we could pay to use 5G Data and it was sold to us as public safety (which is in part of the 800 MHz upgrade plan).
But I'm also I ham radio operator and wireless microphone user and don't want to cause undue interference.
    Edit
I was going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt but it seems to be the turn it up until it squeals then turn it down approach.
Followed by the that's loud I'm not deaf let me do it again I didn't hear it.

We monitor the system and have a pretty good feel when it's reached its limits. To prevent it, we try to scale our system to what the event needs are. • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Год назад

We don't have anything to directly compare, but we have used all brands over the years and any of those brands will get the job done. For us, it was sticking with PreSonus because we needed a relatively compact cabinet that could offer the flexibility we needed. There hasn't been many situations where these haven't worked for us.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  Год назад

The type of device connected should not matter. We connect tablets, computers, and phones all at the same time and the mixer doesn't care....but your network needs to be able to support the devices and your mixer needs to be on the network and device permissions set to allow the desired controls.

    • @thesoundcouple

Yep, that was the goal as their whip would have not made it. Usually it's ok, but for some reason, we had a lot of channel routing reassignments. I feel like I have a good handle on this stuff, but trying to understand why the system behaves the way it does in some cases will simply drive you crazy. Instead, I will focus the energy on being able to identify and resolve the issues.

That's a great point and definitely something we should consider. Over the years, I have felt we have taken the burden of "owning all things wireless issues". We can't own every issue, but we can certainly work on mitigating them with what's directly in our control.

We thought it was worked out, but it is common when there are multiple people involved, there is nobody managing all of pieces...or they assume and try to plan, just to find out that the venues have their rules. If this was such the case, it doesn't surprise me that we weren't told any of this. It's a judgment call that needs to be made, but our experience is that if there is obviously working engagement in process that doesn't include us, don't meddle.
