If you play live solo gigs are want to start, this is a complete guide with tips you need to know on how to set up your gear on stage!

In this guide, I'm taking through my entire setup. In fact, I filmed my actual setup for this gig! And this works for both acoustic and electric live gigs.
I also give a little bonus in the beginning with tips on how to pack your car for these solo gigs.

Thanks again for this solo-guitar gig content. I just started doing gigs, so much is helpful! I got a pair of nice QSC-10 powered speakers, and those expensive hydraulic air-lift stands (because I haven't the strength to raise the speakers), and went to my gig all happy with a real PA...and I actually couldn't even lift the speakers high enough to get them onto the stands at the lowest level! I think I'm going to look into one of those Bose-type array-tower PAs, because I don't have anyone to help me with gigs. I watched with amazement as you not only raised your stand, but lifted the speakers above your head and placed them. Sometimes sucks being a 5'2" woman with no upper body strength. I'm enjoying your videos, thanks!

Yes, I'm still on the fence with a Bose portable system (also looking at the JBL version). Haven't made the switch yet but I can tell you that I'm getting a bit worn down by setting up and tearing down all of this equipment! lol
Been playing bands all my life but I started to doing some solo gigs on the side, so my mindset needs to be different for those shows. This video was super helpful getting me to think of how things need to be, so I can have a successful gig. Thanks so much!
I think you'll love doing these shows! Yeah, the band aspect is awesome but with solo gigs, it's less setup, more money for you, and you're in total control. And with the live experience you already have, this will come easy to you!
Well it's about time I see a solo pro setup without Bose. We are very similar with the exception of a few brands. I've done primarily solo gigs on the road for 30+ years, 20 full time, much of it Apres Ski. My board is Allen & Heath and speakers are JBL SRX 15". Monitor is a very old JBL EON. Two six string acoustics are Martin D-16 and 000-28 and 12 string is Alverez. Line 6 G90 for wireless on guitars.
Mic is Sure Beta 58.
I've got nothing against Bose systems for enclosed smaller quiet rooms with a smaller audience, but as you get bigger and/or outdoors, the Bose falls short. Put a couple of Margarita blenders in there and a party crowd and you need to push some air.

I’m not opposed to the Bose systems. I’m actually playing through the Electro-Voice Evolve 50M these days. It just didn’t make sense to set up all of this gear for a solo act, and I’m playing 2-3 shows a week.

Bose rules for portability , but the EQ is harsh and reverb is lame. I still use it, but with an Allen & Heath mixer. Shure SM 58 mics make you sound bad, I use the Sennheiser MD 421, much better

This will help a lot when I start doing more live jamming from my studio. We recently got a roommate who wants to learn to play drums so we're practicing so we can do live jam/improvised type live stuff. I think its a good move for bands to live stream stuff like that because a lot of people love that behind the scenes kinda thing.

Good video!! And nice chops!! I have a few things to add, I wish I had something like this to see way back when I started hauling my own equipment. This is how I load/handle/set-up my equipment, which support anything from a trio to a 5 pc, depending on venue budget. If you do this regularly, and by the I mean 6 to 10 time s a month, you'll want to streamline your install.
1. SUV in reverse to shortened my travel, specially with heavy equipment. At 56 y/o, my back thanks me every time!! B-)
2. Like you, I use to pack everything on a suitcase, but the OCD in me found it too messy. I got me the Rigid PRO Tool Storage System which is three rolling tool boxes in one.
3. Get yourself a hand truck. It will save a few trips and at least 15 minutes out of load-in and load-out. I use the Cosco 3-In-1 Convertible Hand Truck sold at Costco.
4. Speakers stand height is a very typical issue. I put a few turns of electrical tape at the height where I want the leg's slide to stop.
5. Wireless mics will save you at least 15 mins set-up time, and will clean up the stage nicely. I use the Phenyx Pro PTU-7000A.
6. For monitoring, get in-ears. Also much less to set-up. I use the Takstar WPM-200. It's low budget and sounds good enough to run through a gig.
7. For backing tracks I use the "Avantree Lock aptX Low Latency Wireless Transmitter and Receiver Set" to transmit via Bluetooth from an old phone I use to run Set-list Helper Android app and the tracks from within the app.

This was helpful, man...I've actually got a solo acoustic gig coming up at a local bar and they have those exact speakers...I was told to keep the levels at zero on the back led displays...I also have one of those Lute Hole sound hole covers...it seems to do the trick for the most part.
Awesome and good luck in your gig! Yeah I’ve always kept these speakers at 0 and adjusted the volumes with my soundboard. These speakers have plenty of headroom.

As far as the speaker height goes you can also match the width of the stand legs and you will be even! That’s what I do anyway. Good video appreciate it!

Great video! I can recommend having a duffel bag for cables and all the odd, smal things. And a foldable sack truck for rolling the two speakers in one go. The most time saving tip is to gather all the cables in cable socks for very easy and fail safe installation. So I gather the power cord and speaker cable for each side of the stage and have names on the ends. I do the same with all the rest of the cables. You'll save a lot of hassle and time by this.
Those are great (and better) ideas! I just saw a buddy's setup and he has that small rolling cart and a container for his cables. And I definitely want to find a way to segregate the power cables and instrument/speaker cables.
I've just realized that you can buy combined power and xlr-cables for the exact purpose. That's brilliant. I need those :)

Great video! I did solo gigs years ago, and I've been practicing to get back into gigging shape to get out there again, and my setup is very, VERY similar to yours. I have a pair of EV ZLX 12 speakers, a 12 inch EV sub, a Yamaha 12 channel mixer, and an HX Stomp. I use the same speaker stands as you, too, and my backup mic is an SM 57, just like yours. My main mic is an EV, and depending on the gig I might bring an acoustic and an electric. I play keyboards too, and use a laptop for backing tracks and to control some DMX lights. I live in New Port Richey, which is near Tampa. I'm really enjoying your channel! Lots of great content.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention - I'm struggling with monitoring, too! Right now I'm using inexpensive Shure in ear monitors, but I don't know how well they'll work at an actual gig for me.

love the info you've provided here, thank you!! How often do you practice for 3 hour gigs? I have maybe 1 hour worth of material.
Thank you, and I'm going to be cranking out more tips for playing these live shows...it's a great way to generate a side income and you'll have fun doing it.
First, make a list of about 35-40 songs that you like and want to play out.
Starting out, I practiced about an hour a day, and I would approach it as doing one set for each practice session. So day 1, focus on the the first set, day 2, 2nd set, and so forth.
This way I didn't get burnt out and it gave me enough breathing room to get the songs down and also work on any little hang-ups (sometimes you practice a song and find out that you really don't want to do that song anymore!).

I'm working on a better way, for sure! Our SUV is small and a cart that would hold everything probably wouldn't fit. But I'm leaning toward the new Bose system. I'm playing 2-3 acoustic shows a week now and lugging all this gear around is becoming a chore!

I loved my Takamine jumbos. Had 2 and sold them to buy a Taylor 314. I love the Taylor but I regret letting those go.
Yeah this Takamine has held up great! Use it for live shows every week, often 2-3 times a week.
11:33 Nice video & setup! High-Z (high impedance) is what you'd use for a guitar input - pretty sure you don't need to switch it on for your mic inputs :)

I wanted to say great job on the video. It was very helpful in explaining how to get set up and equipment that is needed. I just have two questions I hope u can help with. 1. What type of app can I use to get lyrics? Like u I can't remember all the songs and it would help me out moving forward with gigs. 2. Nice set up. Looks similar to my set up, I provide karaoke services in clubs, venues and private parties. I also sing but my goal is to eventually assemble a band and do singing gigs instead of karaoke. I have to start somewhere but I’m making it.

Your way of carrying the stands works good , but what I do is use the smallest padded keyboard bag I could find and use it to carry 2 speaker stands , 2 mic stands , and 2 guitar stands plus music stand and all the cables ... It's heavy but one trip is better for me ... I subbed .

As I was watching this video, which is the very first I've seen of yours, I had this weird deja vu kind of thingy going on. As it turns out, we may be kindred spirits. LOL! We use almost the same speakers and almost the same board. But great video! I do have a few comments. (If this is covered in a later video, I apologize.) On the speaker stands, if they are similar models of stands, I put 2 legs of 1 stand up against the other stand, and when they're the same distance apart, the height is the same. Next, have you ever considered using in-ears to monitor your sound? Have you ever had to employ any type of lighting at a venue to either add to the performance or the overall visibility? Lastly, do you use any specific software on your iPad to manage your lyrics? New follower here.

I have a Yamaha Stagepas 300 system with 2 Behringer Eurolives as monitors.

Dude, the Jam Man is great if you want to play with backing tracks. I don’t do any of that and just use my looper to solo over rhythms (recently upgraded to the Ditto X4)

I also play most songs in a different key than what they’re written to fit my vocal range. Plus I throw in some originals and do some jamming with the looper so that helps breaks things up and keeps the sets more interesting.
Get yourself a Bose. It sure makes life easy.

This is super helpful, thank you. I just started using one speaker, the same sound board you have, and the RC Boss 300. I'm curious - do you have any tips on why, after setting up a loop, its hard to hear my lead lines? This usually happens mostly when I have a lot going on in my loop - using all 3 tracks on the RC Boss 300 with rhythm, percussion, bass, and backup vocals. I'll let all that stuff loop and play out but when I play a guitar lick over them, it's really hard to hear what I'm playing.
My personal preference is to keep everything as simple as possible. The more you have going on, things will get buried.
I just loop one rhythm during a song so that I can solo over it, and my loop level is at around 1-2 o’clock.

Just found your channel! Good stuff (Maynard)! I do solo gigs in Bradenton, FL (just south of you).
I haven’t used a DI box. I do use a TC Helicon Harmony G vocal harmonizer which also has some EQ and FX functions. So I input my mic and guitar into it, then to my Fishman Solo PA. It seems to work out fine. Would a DI box add any value to my current setup? I also have a Digi-Tech Trio+ looper/band-in-a-box. (Need to learn how to use it!)
I also have an Alto Bluetooth audio adapter that I plug into the aux input on the PA allowing me to pair my iPhone during breaks to play playlists.
Also, playing here in FL, I always have a travel-sized baby powder bottle for my hands on those humid days! Nothing worse than trying to navigate your fretboard with sweaty hands!

In your case, I don't think a DI is necessary as you're probably getting great sounds. But if you're planning to use a looper, you may want to separate your guitar and vocals.
Never thought of using baby powder but that's a great idea. I do wear a wristband on my strumming wrist and that helps a lot. Yeah, our Florida summers are brutal!
We actually got one after making this video. That's had come in extremely handy, especially for gigs in theme parks where you have to walk a long way to the stage!
I used to load all that stuff but years ago went to a Bose L1 Compact and recently an EV Evolve 30m with a mixer built in and it simplifies everything and sounds better

Yes, you're right. And I don't use that option as my guitar is running through the Line 6 POD Go directly into the board.

Hey jason.I really enjoyed your video.I am wondering what your thoughts are on accoustic amps and are they as good as pa or do think pa systems are the best option for guitar and vocal for solo accoustic gigs.I am looking at the fishman loudbox performer which is 180 watts but not sure if i will go for that or a dedicated pa system like the one on your video.Thanks again.
Acoustic amps are great! And I'd be more inclined to recommend them in a band situation. For solo gigs, I think it's just more gear to carry and setup so I stick with pedals.
It would look a little neater if you moved the suitcase way off to the side before you start. Nit picking, I know. Just a thought.

I guess before I need to know how you load the car and carry stands, I need to know what pedals, amps, and mics might be best for performing. I consider those details to be added at the end, not the beginning. Not to be critical. All great advice though, thanks.

NICE!......I'm thinking about getting a PA system in my garage so I can practice Songs with my guitar at louder volumes, I have a 50watt Marshall Half-Stack......if I run a mixer into the PA system, can I drop the volume of guitar tracks on the song? I notice that my Marshall amps do this automatically when running songs threw the AUX port.....I'm thinking a Mixer board can do this? I mean they're doing this somehow with cheap guitar amps.....so it can't be hard.
Dude I'm not sure but it would make sense that you can. I only use my PA for live gigs and I don't play to tracks

I'm using the Boss WL-20L wireless and haven't had any issues. And I just switch the wireless from one guitar to the next since I'm using the same processor (Line 6 POD Go...I have patches setup for acoustic and electric).

Question please. My friend has a set of 2 power speakers boxes. each contains 2 15s power speaker in Each box now these are not mounted on stands or even elevated , they are just basically on the floor with a maximum hight of 5 feet. My question is what are these dual boxes uses for and is my friend using them correctly or should they be elevated
I depends. If they're subwoofers, they'll stay on the floor. But if they're mains, it's best to elevate them
Do you have certain guitars you never play live and those you exclusively use live? I only had one guitar for a long time and used that all the time. Now I have a few guitars but still only take my first guitar when I play outside the house.
That's a good question. I actually don't have a ton of guitars, so I play them all live and in the studio. Right now, the Takamine acoustic gets played the most, live, because the majority of my solo gig sets are acoustic. I recently started integrating some electric into these gigs and primarily using my Ibanez for that. I'm on the fence about getting a Tele for these gigs.

My band and I are a bunch of highschoolers planning to play small gigs for our city and the school, currently I am having trouble connecting pedalboards and our guitars to our mixer. The sound goes almost mute when the pedals are turned on and the mixer has such a terrible static sound when we turn the volume and gain up on the guitars and mixer. Is there any tips you can give me to help us out?
My best advice is to simplify your setup as much as possible. The less you have, the less that can go wrong. Because it could anything from a bad pedal to bad cable to cable power supply and so on. Are you using the ditto in the effects loop on the pod go and running out from the pod go mono to your board.
My signal chain looks like this: Guitar to POD Go (wireless), POD Go to Ditto, Ditto to soundboard. This allows you to change patches on the POD Go without impacting the loop you recorded (perfect to playing a solo tone over a rhythm)

Mics into DI or Hi-Z? What's the advantage?
With dynamic mics, you don't need Hi-Z. These days I run my mics direct thought he board with no DI (I used to use the Mic Mechanic pedal by TC Electronics for effects, but a good board will usually have a solid compressor and reverb, and that's all I need). Part of live gigs is simplification, especially when you're playing out several times a week.

How can you tell if you are loud enough if you are on stage? Have you got a track you can play through the PA so you can listen off stage? Love your garage btw. Does your vocal and guitar go though the same PA? Never seen that movie. I know the song though
I have a wireless setup for guitar I'll walk out and play, and then I'll have my wife help with the soundcheck (and often have friends in the audience to help as well). I run everything through the Mackie soundboard. And dude, Rad is a killer 80s movie!

It's by LyxPro and yes, it had worked great for over 3 years. Only recently the screw stripped so I have to put something else around the mic stand before screwing the iPad holder on
