Two Grumman Tigers are better than one

- After a 3 month hiatus from posting a video because of the wildfires, follow along as I fly to San Luis Obispo to meet up with a pilot friend and his Grumman Tiger.
Afterwards we get a chance to determine whose Grumman Tiger is the fastest.
LOL. What Wolficorn fails to tell you is I flew IFR and he flew VFR. That means I took a much longer time to get turned around back the other way.
What YOU fail to admit is when flying the same route I was going just as fast and sometimes faster!! hahahahahaha
@@Wolficorntv @Alireza I've seen significant wind changes in 1500 feet alt diff. BTW, both of you have a slower Tiger than I. :)
L R you’re right. Ali probably had a 10 knot tailwind 😂😂
Ali, he's a feisty one!!!!
Who cares who was a bit faster..You are both fortunate to have these.. Love this bird.
One thing I miss about California is the weather. When I was stationed at NAS Moffett in Northern California, my wife and I would take the club C-172 and fly down to San Luis Obispo to visit Hearst Castle, then fly over to Pismo Beach to camp on the airport and hang out at the boardwalk. Great memories!
This summer/fall has been pretty terrible for flying b/c of all the wildfires. It's not back to normal yet but much much better. San Luis is a great airport and beautiful area. I love flying there.
Glad to see another video. When the first of the fires sent smoke over here to Utah, I had to cancel a flight with the wife due to 3 mile or less visibility. Always better to be wishing you were in the air, than wishing you were on the ground!
Thx Russ. It was fun to finally get back up and have some fun filming. I cancelled an epic video project up north b/c of the fires. That project has now had to push a few months. That said, I've got some fun projects planned that I wanna make.
So great to see you back in the air, my hubby and I have missed you!
Thx Tanya! I have some cool stuff in the works!
Thanks for taking us along on your flight. Always fun to watch. Stay safe...
Glad you are back and healthy. I love your videos. You've got a great presence and are very easy on the eyes. Nice plane, too.
Awww, blush. Glad you enjoy my videos. I have some fun projects planned!
Thanks for sharing your aviation experiences. Fly safe!
Good to see you back! Enjoyed the flight and found myself tapping my toes with your good choice of music. And I always knew your plane was the SR 71 of Tigers!
Thx Kent! I’m not the fastest but not the slowest :)
Great seeing you back in the skies! Looking forward to the next one!
Thx man! I’ve got some fun projects in the works!
Wolfi, Great Job! I really enjoy your stuff. Watching your channel is giving me some great ideas on how to improve mine. The biggest take away is your pace, the flow just looks effortless. (but we both know how much work goes into this stuff)
thx man! I'll check out your videos.
Glad you're back!
Thanks Wolficorn👍
Dude you make flying look so easy very relaxed cockpit good job great thanks greeting from the UK
Ha. I just edit out when I'm not relaxed. Half kidding.
I think I can speak for both of us when I say having a solid autopilot makes life a lot less stressful.
Great stuff. California looking 👌
Nice. I also have a nice Grumman tiger in Santa Monica Airport. I will be glad to see you
Cool! My Tiger was based at KSMO until I bought her in 2016.
Really happy to see a new video. Especially with you wearing my hat
Long overdue. That hat is crazy rare and valuable. Only 2 in existence to my knowledge.
Fabulous video Wolficorn thoroughly enjoyed that (you are the master of the editing suite!) - makes me want to come back to California and fly, it's pre 9/11 since I flew in the states solo :0( how things have changed.....
Glad you liked it! California is normally a beautiful place to fly...not so much the past couple of months.
Awesome Job! As always. :-)
Thx Greg!
Slower or faster, a Tiger is still awesome! Yeah, it's been a while since a video from you. Happy to see you are back!
Agree! Yeah it's been too smokey/hazy to film anything interesting the past 2 months. It's finally getting better!
Just flew the Tiger today! MYF-BWC-F70 👍🕺
Nice day to fly for sure! Was it N626FT?
@@Wolficorntv yep
Saw you flying over the house yesterday. Lost sight of you west of Fox Field.
Ha...I was flying over there then. Got any pictures? :)
@@Wolficorntv not this time but I did screen you on Foreflight as you where flying over.
If I remember correctly, Grumman built the lunar lenders of the Apolo missions to the moon.
Maybe they built put some of that lunar lander tech into my Tiger! My next video...try to land my Tiger on the moon!!!!
02:30 Was that crash truck being dispatched for Ali's imminent arrival?? 🤣
Nah, they we're worried that Wolficorn needed to fly in a touch of haze
Boom!
What's the cost in gas for that round trip?
Doing the math, it's about 2.5 hours roundtrip, Tiger averages 9 gal/hr=22.5 gallons, average avgas around here is $4/gal. Total: $90. To do that same trip in my Jeep it would cost about $68 and take 6.5 hours.
@@Wolficorntv so very economical. Who knew 👍
@@aiasis3983 What he didn't mention is the "other" $10K associated with owning an airplane each year... ; )
@@lamberto6405 still not bad all things considered. A) little to NO TRAFFIC B) No covid mask rules C) window seat with amazing views and no fat guy hugging the arm rest. I could go on but my flights about to leave and I dont wanna miss it. 😄
That is cheap gas....Van nuys selfserve was over $5 last year when I flew last.
Santa Paula is always one of the cheapest in SoCal
So I fly an AA5B. Are you telling me that’s the slow one???
I dunno but I typically fly "slow" in mine to for fuel economy. I'm usually at 2500-ish rpm in cruise. The xtra speed you gain from flying redline usually isn't worth it to me.
I agree. Thanks for another great video!
@@Wolficorntv Bryan, does your Tiger have the IO360 or O360? and are you normally LOP or ROP? I cruise my DA40 (also an IO360) LOP at 2450 rpm (the PowerFlow supposedly has a productive resonance at 2450) or sometimes at 2200 rpm (quieter and even more efficient). As always, a very enjoyable and well-produced video. Thx! Wayne
@@GeezerGeekPilot Bryan's plane would be difficult to fly LOP, as it has 2 magnetos and no fuel injection. My plane can be run successfully LOP, despite being carburated, because I added a SureFly electronic ignition on one side. Still won't run as smoothly as when ROP, but it will pull about 2600 RPM at 8.5-9 GPH. I've been sort of a guinea pig for him in deciding what to do, and my experience has been mixed, though mostly positive.
When I fly ROP, I'm burning 10.5-11 GPH at 2700 RPM and will fly 140 knots true.
Alireza, good info. In my DA40 (IO360) I also swapped one magneto for electronic ignition (ElectroAir in my case) and it did make LOP easier and smoother... and because of the advanced timing, improved TAS with increasing density altitude. Wayne
I see you exit ramps stick out like mine... Get those reversed for more speed than you will "REALLY" be faster than Alireza! : )
He always flies full power. The xtra couple of knots isn't usually worth the fuel penalty to me.
5:17 Bomb was deployed
My maneuvering skills avoided it!
