- How high will my 180 horsepower Grumman Tiger actually go? Let's try to find out. The service ceiling of this plane is 13,800 ft. Will it actually reach that high altitude? I don't have supplemental oxygen so I am not allowed to go above 14,000 ft, according to FAA regulations. Also, I experience technical problems during my attempt.
Took my flight training in a Grumman Cheetah. Loved that plane. Enjoy your videos.
I have yet to fly in a Cheetah. Thx!
Man, it kills me watching you fly. I'm right between Burbank and Whitman, and before that I lived in the apartments directly south of Van Nuys. I've got about 1 more year to being debt free, and hope to get in the air soon. Thank you for sharing your adventure!
Glad to see you diggin’ the videos. Keep pushing forward man and keep the dream alive!
Welcome back to the utube sky N244ER always a pleasure. Can you fly more please it's so much fun watching your lil adventures.Such a relaxed calm aviator.Good content good music and great camera work. The balloon fact was lmao.Best wishes from furloughed flight attendant in Canada.
Thx! I appreciate the compliment, coming from a currently unemployed video editor in California :)
Gotta love those GoPros! Great vid as always, impressive service ceiling.. now you need that supp oxygen for the next climb!
Funny considering my last video I was recommending GoPro cameras!
@@Wolficorntv They really are great, they just has their quirks, lol!
Love your videos.
Thx Mark!
Great to see and I envy you with the ease you just did that. It´s just to cold up there to even try on my broomstick and I´m lacking some and maybe even all flight instruments too.
You would have been just fine on your broom up there that day. It was 14 C at 14,000. Clear VFR day...broom approved!
@@Wolficorntv Thanks for advising on the temperature and vis up there, but I still find it too chill while wearing a messed up pantyhose ;-) Glad to know you know all about the BPL. You are truly one of a kind. Most people don't like the mandatory uniform and seating. Keep up the good work - I hope to see another great video soon again!
Good job!!!
I'm now one step closer to the stars!
Great job!
if only my GoPro didn't screw up. I was so pissed!
Wolficorn yeah, but you made up pretty good. Never 100% trust GoPros.
Nice! I have a '77 Grumman AA-5B based here in Colorado where the DA averages over 9,500' MSL on those hot summer days, (our home field KBJC elevation is 5,673' MSL). The highest I've taken our bird is 12,500', but I am sure I had a few more thousand available if I had needed it. DA was probably well over 14K. I still had a climb rate of over 400' FPM when I leveled off and that was flying in mid-July on our way to KOSH in 2017. We still have the original O-360 with no mods. CHT's were around 385 to 390 on the hottest cylinder. Not bad for an "old girl". My son and I don't fly it in the mountains often though. For that, I like to rent a C-182 with a bit more power. Also, I hate sucking on O2.
Fly safe and fly often!
I've departed with 10k DA before. Not exactly a hot rod in those conditions! DA at 14 was about 16.5 and I still had more power to climb if I had O2. I was impressed with my aging engine.
Good stuff!! Thanks for including your N number in your vids. It's fun to check FlightAware from time to time to see what the Tiger has been up to. I was wondering about the weird out-and-back on the 4th.
You stalking me hippie?? Haha. I can't believe it took me this long to finally do this flight. It was fun but I could def feel the O2 effects.
Wolficorn LOL! I knew there was no way to post that without sounding stalkery.
Cool stuff bro.
YMER
At least you already fly (by yourself) higher than most people will ever be able to do.
Great video!!
Thx Ana! I'm still holding out for that call from Elon! haha
@@Wolficorntv Good luck! 😃
Any reason to fly! Lots of fun. The last flight I tried to gopro I messed up and long-pressed the record button resulting in 622 still photos of my flight........sigh. There is always next time! Thanks for bringing us along!
Indeed! I've encountered many a camera or audio f'ups while doing my flying videos. This one I particularly mad. But...you gotta work with what you got.
How much below gross weight do you typically fly (when solo)? Full tanks? That would be a fun flight at night, in cooler temps with supplemental Ox. Interesting video--your camera captures great hi res shots, if it's not glitching..... (is that a word?) I was in a flying club in Northern Ca and we had a 1978(brand new then!) Tiger--loved flying that plane. I see it's now registered in Santa Barbara...
Solo I'm at least 400 under gross.I would love to go higher with O2. One of these days. Thx for watching!!
How do you do the mini airplane on the map movement? Awesome videos btw 😊
thx Zack! For that one I just got a screengrab of a map and animated a little airplane on top in Premiere. Pretty easy. I sometimes put my actual flight path on the map and the involves a little extra work.
On a flight from San Jose to Las Vegas, caught a mountain upslope wind over the Sierra's and rode up to 18500 and stayed there most of the way to KHND (with ATC consent & suppl O2).
view must have been nice up there
Great video. Can you do a flight where you follow the shoreline.
Thx! I'll put that on my list!
Maaann, I hate it when a camera craps out. I thought only rookie aviation youtubers had that problem. I'm glad to know I am not alone. Do you and JPS Bryan have the same model Grumman?
It's a universal dilemma, I'm quite certain. It has happened several times with the same camera, my GP7. I realized after this flight that my firmware wasn't up to date. Hopefully that fixes it. JPS Bryan has a Grumman Traveller. 150hp. Mine is a Tiger, 180hp.
@@Wolficorntv ok, I am using a few gp4's. I have run into the overheating issue several times. If gopro would just put the camera in an aluminum body, I think the issue could be resolved..grrrr. I hope to get a ride / fly Bryans grumman at the ACCA's. I really dig the sliding canopy. It's the ULTIMATE A/C!!
Those balloons always end up in Death Valley. Littered everywhere.
true?
What about airliners? you tell flight service what your plan is?
I've only come across those balloons while flying through LA, never San Diego. They scared the crap out of me the first time I encountered one, thought it was a drone or a UFO.
It's the weirdest thing! I see them all the time. Must be alot of sad kids on the ground 😂
@@Wolficorntv I like to think it's just one kid in Santa Paula committed to building a lawnchair flyer.
Great video!
How would you calculate how high you could get when the density altitude/Barometric pressure & air temps rise a lot?
So in this day the reading wasn’t that much over standard 29.92.
Would there ever be instances where your max that day might be 11,000ASL?
Thx Michael! The way you calculate would be the same as any other day...just input the necessary data in the DA calculator.
I've flown in some very hot and high DA situations near gross weight at 11.5, so easily doable in the Tiger...it can just take longer to climb that high on those days.
@@Wolficorntv thanks for your feedback!!!
I’ve got the flying bug 1 year ago. I live next door to a class D airport watching smaller GA planes take off & land often on weekends, some doing pattern work. I enjoy Flight sims like Microsoft & Others.
I recently gotten into RC Flying which is fun & teaches one how a plane works in the air :-)
Thinking about going for a Pilot’s license next year- need to pass FAA health physical first.
@@Mikinct Go for it! First thing you can do is schedule a discovery flight at your local flight school. Def smart to get the medical out of the way early. If for any reason you think you have a medical issue that may be a problem DO NOT take the medical before consulting an AME. A failed medical on record will become a PITA for progressing forward.
@@Wolficorntv Gottcha-
@@Mikinct once you pass your medical...if any issues arise down the road you can always switch to Basic Med, as opposed to a 3rd class medical. But you need to pass that aviation medical the first time for that to become an option. Speaking thru experience dealing with that stuff.
How long (time or distance) can you go between fuel stops?
Alot of variables go into that, but generally it will go 4:30 with over an hour reserves left in the tank. I've done that once. It's a long time to be in the plane. Mileage depends on winds, but without wind, that's about 550 miles
So what was your rate of climb nearing 14k? Any idea of what the temp was on the ground when you departed? Thanks!
Climb near 14 was b/w 150-200 fpm. DA at 14 was about 16.5. Temp on the ground was in the upper 80s.
Hot air balloon? Helium perhaps.
yeah I guess I should have called it a helium balloon, LOL
So if you were to fly over the Rocky Mountains, you would have to take a course around mountains like Pikes Peak rather than over?
There are preferred routes to take in the Rockies thru the passes for us planes that don't fly over the higher peaks. Wind is always a consideration in those situations.
@@Wolficorntv I imagine it has to be pretty hair raising to be flying a plane and having ground higher than you nearby.
How about showing us a hammerhead?
Maybe not an astronaut but your off the ground and having fun....😂
Absolutely!
how cold was it up there?
Those Grumman's are Rocket Ships, so the friction keeps them warmer than most planes!!!
It wasn't. Around 60 F. I re-calculated DA when I was at 13.5 and it was 16,100 ft. I feel like on a standard day it would make it to 18,000. Now I wanna borrow some O2 just to see if I can.
@@Parr4theCourse ha...I wish that altimeter shot at 4:40 was real time and not sped up!
@@Wolficorntv
Yea, it was rolling pretty good!!!
You've flown higher than I have @ 11,000
You should race Bryan and see who is faster,!!! - HA!!!
@@Parr4theCourse I´m sure Bryan will win ;-)
I had my AA5B Tiger to 17500. Very slow climb.
Good to know. I'd like to acquire some O2 one day and go higher.
David Comarow clawed my AG5B (with O2) to 17,900. I really wanted to see whether I could crack FL 180
but realized I’d have to file an IFR pop-up, and OAK Cntr sounded too busy to mess with it for just a few minutes in Class A.
Almost 5 miles high?
I reached 14,000 that day...about 2.65 miles up. Couldn't legally climb higher without oxygen.
wish I knew how to subSCIBE 🤪
hey! is that your wife I'm talking to at :53 ?
@@Wolficorntv not this time
