Well, that brought back memories. My first aircraft was a Cardinal (N13409} that I bought in 1991 just outside of Indianapolis and flew home to western CT. ADF didn't work, LORAN didn't work (WAY before GPS), and compass was way off. It was nightfall, the wind picked up along with downdrafts. I got lost over the central PA mountains, clicked my mike on unicom frequencies and a large airport lit up underneath me - it even had a rabbit! Landed and while taxiing to the terminal there were large, dark shapes in the beam of my landing light that I finally recognized as Chinook helicopters! Oh, Damn! I landed at a military airport! I called up flight service and we determined I was at Mid-State airport, joint-use civilian and National Guard. Whew. Spent the night and flew home in the morning IFR (I Follow Roads).
I loved that "Grumman Grin" when you were told by ATC that you had a 20 knot advantage over that Cardinal! Sweet video... also, great to see Dennis. I enjoy his posts on them FB Grumman owners sites. If you're ever out here in Denver, look me up. Would love to fly a Tiger formation flight with ya. The views here are spectacular!
That comment from ATC made my day! Dennis is a great guy and it was nice to meet him. I just had a good friend move to Denver, just a couple miles from Centennial airpot. If I ever make it over there I'll most certainly give you a shout!!!
This is pretty crazy for me. My Dad was in Skycombers in the 80's. I flew all over the place with him in N11487, which was the first Cardinal they had. I am so glad I found this channel. Thanks for sharing this!
Awesome! That particular Cardinal was before my time. Some idiot ran it out of fuel AT NIGHT and crashed it in Santa Clarita. Anyway...glad you enjoyed the video.
I saw a Yankee in the background as you taxied in at home! Many hours in the Yankee many years ago. Thanks for the ride!! Also had some Cardinal time years ago. Great memories!
@@AV8OR51 Thx for the support but sorry to hear you're having an issue. Can you give me more detail so that I can reach out to teespring to figure it out?
You commented on the speed. Check your elevator position at 7:22. You can see how nose heavy the Tiger is. Get some weight on the rearmost part of the baggage area and see speed improve further. Once trimmed, the elevator position should be neutral (and not fighting itself).
I saw these guys in Craigslist a short while ago. I'm still working on my LS, so I can start the slow, expensive path to private pilot, but hoping to get through it relatively quickly. Seems like an attainable way to fly.
I flew a fixed gear cardinal from CA to PA and back in 1976. Back when you could rent a plane and fly cheaper with 2 people than with an airline. The good ole days.
haha. The other Tiger was Dennis'. The Cardinal was Dominick's (lot's of D's). The cardinal has same horsepower engine (180) but it just goes to show how well-designed the Tigers were :)
Please read Advisory Circular 90-66B and use your N# for radio calls and not "blue and white tiger". Why use two different communication techniques when flying controlled vs. uncontrolled. Would you talk to center and say "blue and white tiger" or would you use your registration?
I've had this discussion with many pilots. First of all...I've read it. You are correct that it says to say call sign, but it also suggests saying paint schemes to help aid in ID. At the end of the day...the whole point of self reporting at non-towered airports is to help others see and ID you. The paint scheme of an aircraft is 10x more useful than a call sign for other aircraft to know who is who. Of course I would never say "blue and white" to center. That's ridiculous. However, if you can explain to me how a call sign is better in that situation, other than just because AC 90-66B suggests it, I am open minded and all ears.
20knots overtake what sort of ias were you doing and how much power? Seeing that both of you were going the same direction winds aloft would not matter.
I don't remember the IAS, but even though both the Cardinal and the Tiger are 180hp, the Tiger typically sees about 10-15 kts better TAS than the Cardinal does.
Great video, I am just now joining a flying club near NYC for the first time and am really looking forward to it. I have a question about a presumably Socal-based Grumman Tiger that remains to this day one of the most beautiful GA planes I have ever seen. I saw this plane at VNY back in 2016 I think. It was this great shade of green, sorta olive/avocado green, with an interior to match. Older avionics, but the paint and interior was just fantastic. By any chance have you come across a Tiger that matches this description? Love your videos, keep up the good work, and fly safe!
I got my PPL at FRG when I was living in NYC 10 years ago. I'd love to fly some more in that area one of these days. I haven't seen the Grumman you are describing...I don't think I'd forget seeing an avocado Tiger!
@@Wolficorntv That's great! I've flown with Long Island Aviators and Nassau Flyers out of FRG. Great airport. Now joining the Paramus Flying Club at CDW. If I find anything on this Tiger I'll let you know! I know I have a photo of it somewhere....

I’m up at Rocky Mt. Metro KBJC, just a stones throw to the northwest of Centennial KAPA, but close enough. Looking forward to it!

Once I'm in cruise and activate ALT hold, it typically trims out better than that.
That's my favorite IPA
I finally put a fridge in my hangar and that was the first beer I wanted to have for post-flight drinkin' :)

CL? 😏 Skycombers really is a great/economical access to flying, if you live in the area.

The cardinal has those nice big doors for easy in/out but I'd take the sliding canopy almost any day!

Yo Wolfi! I love it!!! How much of a HP advantage does your Grumman have over the Cardinal?
None! They are both 180hp lycoming o-360s. Grumman gets better fuel burn as well.
