toners: how to pick, mix & apply a hair color toner at home | 2024

- how to make any hair color a toner at home.
*key points:
•toners cancel out unwanted tones (usually oranges, yellows & reds)
•toners are a separate hair color formulation (mostly done right after lightening)
•toners typically only change tones, not levels (lightness or darkness)
•toners like T18 will change the tone and level of hair (not recommended for blondes that have dimension or lowlights)
•The hair color box does not have to say "toner" for it to be a toner. You can make a toner out of any permanent hair color by mixing it in a 1:1 ratio (1 part color to 1 part 10 volume developer) and applying it to towel-dried hair for up to 15 minutes.
•to find the correct toner, find your hair color level (1-10), then find your uwanted tone (yellow, orange, green or red). You are looking for a hair color that is the same level but the opposite color of the tone (if you have hair that is a level 9 yellow, you are looking for a 9V hair color to use as a toner)
•any shade of hair can use a toner (it's not just for blondes)
•darker hair that has a green tint can be toned using something with red (I would personally suggest using a color with pink in it- it makes a really nice natural color. Pink hair colors are often labeled "blush" or "rose"
•toner is applied quickly to towel-dried hair. It does not have to be a super neat application.
•If you are unsure about the toner, a strand test is recommended. Take a piece from the back and apply the toner, allowing it to process to ensure it's the color you want before committing to your whole head.
•once the toner is applied, cover it with a plastic cap or bag
•processing time is up to 15 minutes, checking it every 5 minutes
•rinse with cool water until the water is clear; you do not have to shampoo it out unless you prefer to
•toners last about 3 weeks (may be longer or shorter due to how much you shampoo your hair)

First time I’ve ever watched a video that I actually understood what was being taught. Girl, you found your niche. 🙌👏👏🙏
She explained it so well. I bet if she taught in colleges and universities, she'd make Einsteins and Shakespeares out of people.
Exactly.
Probably NOT the best analogy for whom one might want to idolize in becoming fab at hair…….BOTH had the scariest hair “styles” LOL!😂 But I DO get your point!!!❤
I have been trying to figure out at-home toner for a year and a half. This is the most thorough and efficient tutorial. I cannot thank you enough!
Thank you so much! I'm in cosmetology school right now and I'm not out on the floor yet. We just got done with color, and I told my instructor that I did not feel 100% comfortable with color yet. She told me that that is normal and I will learn more on the floor! I'm trying to have faith in what she is saying, but it's hard. I just came across your videos today and I've already showed my classmates!! You make everything make so much more sense! My instructor is 23 years old and just received her license a couple years ago, so its hard because she don't have that much experience. It has been my dream to be a cosmetologist so I'm not ever giving up and I'm obsessed with learning! I am in recovery, I have 4 years sober, and I feel like I've wasted so much time, and I'm playing catch up. Your videos have done so much for me!
She is right. I will be honest; I spent most of my hours in school rolling perms. I have only had ONE paying customer ask for a perm in my 13 years of being a hairdresser. It felt like a big waste of time to focus on something I would never use but was a necessary evil. Most of my learning came from experience, making mistakes in the salon, and asking questions to those who were way ahead of me. Give yourself grace; you are right where you need to be. Congrats on the four years! & thank you for sharing with your class! On my site (brittneealexushair.com), there are printable guides, and on my main channel, you'll find hair tutorials that are older ( I am doing my best to clean them up, re-shoot them, and move them to this channel, but it takes a long time) most importantly, HAVE FUN in school!!!
@@brittneealexushair Thank you sooo much!! And YESSSS oh my gosh the PERMS and the roller sets!! AHHH
You’re the best teacher ever!!! 🥰🥰 I swear!!! Don’t ever stop please!!
Loved how you explained it with the visual. Makes total sense. I've been trying to figure out toners forever!!
Thank you Britney I never knew you could use a permanent hair color instead of using a toner. That makes a lot of sense. I’ll have a better hair color next time I color my hair. I’ll see you Sunday.
You're so awesome! Love your videos :)

Thank you!
Brittnee, I've just found your channel, thank the lord! I've got so many 'how to' hair colouring videoos on my saved list, some quite long, none of them have explained the whys and wherefores like you just did. It now all makes sense, and I'm now ditching expensive toners to make my own from my collection of permanent shades which I never knew I could make into toners myself! Thank you so much (new subscriber) ❤❤❤
VERY clear and informative. Thank you very much.
Very clear and helpful information, thank you

Wow! Amazing explanation! I feel like you just taught me calculus and chemistry. Thank you!
🎉Great Explanation! Straight to the Point! Thanks 👏 🎤
OMG! I just did this today after seeing your video and it turned out AWESOME!! Usually I use the T14 or T18 but it’s still yellow/orange and I have like 3 different colors going on and it looks so bad! Now it’s a cool white, no weird line between my roots and previous color! I’m in TOTAL shock right now! You are AMAZING!!
Beautiful explanation 🎉
That was fab thankyou any tutorial on shadow root please

Brittnee I have been watching your channels for about a month after finding you via RUclips search. Thank you for being you and like others have said before me you’re an incredible teacher. Slowly but surely I feel like I understand more with each day. Though I’m still a chicken and need help picking a base tone 😂 I was watching your entertainment channel the other night and my husband walked in to ask what I was watching and I said it’s my new hair girl😂☺️🤩💗🫶🏼God bless you and your family
Very educational, thanks
Will you do a video on how to get the perfect gray hair color?
Best tutorial ever
You had me at “Bob Ross in’ it” Yaasssssss I just found you and I want to hang out 😂😂😂
Thank you so much for this and all of your incredibly easy-to-follow videos. I have been highlighting my hair since the pandemic, but struggling to get the toner right, but now thanks to you, my hair colour is perfect, no more cat pee yellow highlights, just hair that looks like I went to the salon, not my bathroom. Thank you 😘
Great Job
Very interesting and informative, thank you
your videos are great! can you do some on root lifts (especially if the dye work is for a root touchup job)
Thanks
Thank you
I love rinsing my hair in cold water after toning during the winter! It counts double: as a hair treatment AND a Wim Hoff cold water immersion session. 😜
Superbly explained!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Surely subscribing! Love from India ❤
Excellent
Gracias, es lo que estaba buscando porque esto es lo que me pasa. Sorry no hablo inglés 🙌🙌🙌✨️✨️✨️
Excellent teaching skills 👏🏼. Very easy to understand.
I love you so much. Thank you! You have no idea how much time I wasted researching this and you just explained it perfectly in 9 minutes! Thank you thank you thank you! Getting rid of my orange hair tomorrow! Yay!
GODSPEED!!! you will do great!
You are so so brilliant at explaining things, thank you ❤❤❤. I have a major problem with warmth in my colour no matter what, I really mean orange no matter what I do 😊. Any magical suggestions?
I just tried toning my hair and was surprised at how well it came out. My hair is highlighted professionally to a level 10 (along with a good amount of gray) and I just reached the point that I can't justify the amount of money that I've been spending over the years. I used T14 with 10 volume developer. I was suggested to leave the toner in between 20-40 minutes (and I split the difference at 30 minutes) and I'm thrilled with the result. I'm back to being a nice ashy blonde and lost none of the dark dimensions. It's definitely something that I'm now comfortable doing now that I've actually taken the plunge.
Very well done! Easy to understand! Hands down best I’ve seen. Hate those drama videos.
thank you
I have gone through video after video, article after article looking for an educated answer to tone my level 9/10 bleached hair and this is by far the most helpful i have come across! I can now confidently get the righ products and have the hair I want! Thank you so much! ❤
glad it could help!!!
I learned more from watching a few of your videos today than I have in decades of dabbling with hair color. I'm a pro at reds and stripping color but high lift and bleach have always been my downfall. After watching you and a quick trip to Sally, where the lovely older woman working was more than happy to recommend a blend of Wella toners (cooling violet and T18), I'm ready to tackle my baby chick yellow hot roots. Well more like half my head!
Love your explinations very clear, but I have grey hair and like it greier (if thats a word) not platinum...any suggestion thanks
Thank you so much 😊 you explained very well. I need some guidance from you I have lots of grey hair on fronts but salt and pepper on the back. I have been using medium ash blonde from many years now I stopped coloring my hair from 4 months and have lots of gray on front. Some gathering came up and I have to cover it but don’t want to use any color so plz give me some suggestions to cover the grays and if I tone up my grays what color should I use. Please reply me I need your precious advice. Thank you very much.
You saved my freaking life. 🙏
glad it could help!!
Hair for summer a video on how to do halo highlights for dimension at home ❤
more like this please
Thank you so much for this!! All this time I thought "how the heck do I tone my med/dark brown hair" because I couldn't find anything with the word "toner" on it (other than the wella blonde toners). Thank you!!
pink looks really really nice to use as a toner for darker hair!
@brittneealexushair oh thank you! I will try that. I'm tellin ya, you just opened up my world today. Lol
@@brittneealexushairpink does it still neutralize or what would it be or look like could you give me an example it seems like that would really be a cool idea Thank you as always
