Slate Digital EQs - Deep Dive

Why is it that we have so many EQs to choose from in the plugin world, not just in the Slate Digital offering? Could it be that one EQ doesn't necessarily sound identical to another? Does it offer different EQ curves? That's exactly what I wanted to find out!
There are several EQs and tone shaping plugins in the Slate Digital All Access Pass - and beyond - that all offer something different when mixing. I wanted to find out exactly how these EQs differ, and why they sound so different. Is this high shelf on a Neve emulation really that different to a high shelf on an SSL emulation? SPOILER ALERT - It really, really is, and in this video I'll show you exactly how much they differ.

The Q on the Earth EQ was very surprising. I never thought to use it in that way.

That’s actually the way I use it 90% of the time, I leave the big knob alone. Just tune the HPF to the area you want and boost that Q to give you a bump 👊

Thank you! I’ve been searching all over RUclips for this specific content! I’m starting out and this delivery is what I was needing! Most engineers just tell you about the plugins and the emulations they are modeled after, but actually showing and testing the ranges and how precise or off the plug in is, in my opinion is so helpful!

Neve curves usually are more narrow the more you push it atleast from what I found.. I dunno why this one would be different 😕

This is great but what I am missing is the analysis of the harmonics.. which I believe is the real important difference.

I’m really just looking at the overall curves here, which is where the difference really lies. There will definitely be harmonic differences, but if you boost 10kHz on two different EQs and the curves are vastly different, they’re going to sound vastly different. Harmonics are more of an underlying thing, but keep an eye on the channel, as there will be something coming soon that sounds like it will be right to your street 👍
