Devvon, I am a 70 year old rhythm guitarist in a band and songwriter with a very nice home studio. For years I have been concerned with the levels of each channel in relation to the others. Dude - this probably the best EQ vid I’ve seen since YT started. You’re articulate, you’re intelligent, you have great camera presence, you don’t curse like a sailor for no reason, and your content and Zen is solid. Very nice work, and thanks! 👍🎶
Why out of everything I’ve watched on RUclips and learned at school Is he the only one explaining this? I’ve waited forever to understand this. How else were we suppose to know just by listening? HelpMeDevon may not have as many years wasted in the studio as I have, (thank God), but he sure does have valuable advice! Apply what you heard here and you will save yourself years of working with a producer who is learning as he/she goes!😃
I work as a live engineer and this a great introduction to eq. If you guys want to get better grab a eq ear training or frequency training app. This will help more than any eq tutorial. Once you know what 100hz, 200hz 400hz and so on sounds like, you will hear all those build ups of frequencies and know what to cut and not to cut or what to boost if something lacks. Eq and leveling is 90% of mixing, the rest is just colour and dynamics control. One last tip always eq with all tracks playing otherwise you might cut too much or wont need to cut at all even if there is a problem with the vocals.
Probably one of the easiest to understand tutorials on EQ I've ever watched! Also, made me feel a bit validated since I've already been doing a lot of these things. Great job!
Hey I don't know if it's just the way that I register things or how I learn things but I honestly have seen so many videos on how to eat you and I am an R and B aspiring singer songwriter who wants to learn how to you know mix and engineer my own vocals and I've never been able to understand EQ until now I just want to say thank you so much for putting this video up the way you explained everything just makes so much sense to me so I wanna say thank you I'm definitely gonna follow the rest of your videos and you know recommend friends of mine and in people who I know who do music to you know to follow your RUclips page.
Great video. It takes patience to sit through a 20 minute video when the concepts are completely new, but this was extremely helpful. My biggest takeaway was breaking up the EQ on a scale: low, low-mids, mids, high mids, high (and assigning hertz to each band and understanding impact of a cut or boost for each). The biggest challenge is understanding the vocabulary and application. Thanks!

My Question is which specific upsides this range brings. Maybe not for Vocals but for other Instruments like basses.
Thank you very much and greetings out of Germany.
Your kick usually hits around 60hz. Below that are also your sub frequencies. You can feel those in your body if you have a sub or big speakers.
The upside the lower range brings (90hz) is it makes your bass and kicks sound fuller and punchy as well.
@@lo-filogic so are u saying we shouldn't roll off 90hz and below because that would affect the kick?
