What takes the sounds in front ? volume knobs ??, gain level ? or compressors?? I watched the art of mixing video by david gibson. Can you make a newer version of that using new tools and modern mixing using modern software tools, with live examples???

Parallel makes vocal pop cut through the mix.
What is parallel compression: copy of the vocal. Take the duplicate and compress it to the max, no dynamics. Blend the super compressed with the dynamic semi compressed.
How does he set it up
Sends, to a bus, a track
Create a send, send it to a track
Puts a NLS on the track
    Cla-76 waves all ratio
    Attack fastest
    Release medium
Look for around -10 range gain reduction
    Move to a limiter
    L1 limiter
    Threshold -14.3
    Out -8.1
    Optional steps
    EQ
    Roll off the low end
    Last
    SSL channel
    Take off 3.5 khz range
    Fader set to -25.4
Bring it all the way down then find sweet spot

This is genius. Basically you can keep the tone and make it louder without affecting the dynamics or clipping it. I do something similar with multiband compressors, but I clone and mix the tracks separately to get the tone I want. I never thought to put the source thru a send first. I'm not an expert on vocal mixing so techniques like this always blow my mind.

If you put an EQ on the parallel, make sure that it is set to linear phase mode if it sounds off when you do apply the EQ. Look out for this especially on drums and bass.

Damn. Thanks a lot devvon. I was hearing this kind of sound in many songs and i didn't know what it was. Now i know it's parallel compression.
P.s. I've heard about parallel compression before, but I've seen so many bad tutorials on RUclips that i didn't know that it brings this kind of sound. I thought in the beginning that this technic is bad, but it's awesome

On the CLA-76 the directions are backwards. So to set a fast attack or release you switch the knob to the right. If you want a slower release or a attack you set the knob to the left.

Quick question, did many of you guys hear a difference with a cheaper set of speakers when watching his video. I noticed I couldn’t hear a major difference until I watched this video on in the studio. I watched it on my computer speakers and couldn’t really tell the difference apart from a louder mix? Thoughts ? I know many people these days also only listen to mp3 which would also lack in quality of a better mix

    I have a question :
If I use a send to send my lead vocal signal to a parallel comp aux it will be the signal without the reverbs and delay right ? I mean, when i'll be adding the compressed signal it will ad "dry" compressed signal. Is this the right way to use parallel compression ? Or should I send all my vocals + rev and delays to a bus and then send this bus to my parallel compression aux ?

    • @TAC-hq3il

    • @camrenjones1079
      @camrenjones1079 2 года назад

      1. Route individual tracks to the mixer
      2. Route all tracks that you want to be parallel compressed to a free insert in the mixer (Bus) (Route this Bus to a Mix Bus or the Master Track)
      3. Same as Step 2 but instead of ROUTING to another free insert, SIDECHAIN to another free insert. (Sidechain in FL Studio is basically a Send) (Make sure each track is "sent" to this insert) (Route this "Send" track to the Bus in Step 2)
Signal Flow: Tracks (Instruments, Drums, or Bass) --ROUTE--> Bus --ROUTE--> Mix Bus or Master
Tracks --SIDECHAIN--> Parallel Bus (also called a Send) --ROUTE--> Bus
This is just a basic signal flow and can be routed differently if you choose to.
Ex. You want to create a Drum Bus but not include cymbals or bass so you create a separate Bus and/or Parallel Bus

I believe that you hear a huge difference because your ears are trained. But to anyone who's here to learn something, they probably need to learn to train their ears as well. Hey Devon I appreciate your Tutorials a lot. I love the sound this Parallel Compression adds to the Vocals but if I try to do it on my own I get Phasing Problems. Any Tips on how to avoid/correct this ?

Bruh you are a gifted teacher!!! You have a degree in teacher education? You are an effective teacher. I don't use any of your DAWS (I use LUNA) but your explanations are so clear and organized by thought process that I know exactly how to apply to my DAW. I'm ready to sign up for classes!
