Looking to upgrade your home DJ practice room / studio with new speakers? If you're ambitious and have outgrown your first set (maybe you now want to start producing music too, and realise you need something better), or simply are still using those gaming speakers you recommissioned when you bought your DJ controller and always intended to buy something more professional, the Yamaha HS7 is a model you should consider.
Clear, true sound, deep enough bass to mean no subwoofer required in most circumstances, and realistically priced for any ambitious DJ / producer, we can find nothing to fault on the Yamaha HS7s.
Highly recommended.
Six months ago I would agree that a sub-woofer is not necessary. However, after producing a mix of a live band using my HS7's, I took the project to a friend who had HS8's with a sub-woofer. I was shocked to hear all kinds of low-end "mud" in the audio spectrum of my project that had gone unreported by the HS7s. So if producing dance music where amplified bass is important you would probably need that sub-woofer to make sure all the bottom-end is clean and tight.
Good point to consider, thank you :)
Exactly
Yeah honestly if a flat response is important, you will need a sub going down pretty much flat to 20Hz. If you're a foley artist, perhaps even lower.
That's why you just low cut everything!

I have a Macbook Pro Retina and a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 (interface) - Can someone please tell me how I would connect these up?
I want to buy these or the HS5s
you need to buy an audio interface(connected via usb) then , you hook the interface up to the speakers , select the proper preferences , and then , you have sound
KA6 has a pair of dedicated balanced output on the rear panel to connect the monitor.
you quite convinced me to buy yamaha hs7. nice review.
Excellent review! I particularly liked the way you talked about the bass response being good enough to not need a sub-woofer. I have finalized the HS7s as my next monitors (without a sub-woofer). Thank you!
No problem, thanks for watching
@@digitaldjtips please does the hs7 come with a cable
Lovely Speaker - had these on my TV for the last year and they work really well - would never think of using a subwoofer as it makes an unpredictable result. My previous were Ferrograph S1 monitors from 1974 - they still cane the Yamaha but if the Ferro's weren't available the Yamahas would do
Nice one :)
I'm very lucky to have managed to get a pair of these today for less the price of a single one new, with the pads to stand on! Really great review, its kind of what i would guess from watching the hs5-hs8 comparison, hs5 had too little bass, hs8 had too much, i reckoned this was just right, and you confirmed this for me, thanks!
Great review! You laid out everything nice and concise, and touched on a few things that I needed to know, namely on whether or not these need an amp. Thanks a lot!! P.S. Your voice is awesome lol.
+Stuart Black Haha, thanks! :)
My fellow music listeners.... I want to listen to music loud at home, both alone and also with friends over. Both loud and low, with speakers where i can hear detailed sounds and also with a good bass
Which should i buy: HS7? HS8? KRK Rokit VXT8?
Very thankful for you honest answer
We're big fans of either brand, but we've only reviewed the HS7s (and loved them): www.digitaldjtips.com/reviews/yamaha-hs7/
Buy hi fi man. Don't waste money on something that won't serve purpose man. These studio monitors are for studio use. It's like buying a Ferrari and take it to a farm..
Thanks - had HS5s and wanted something deeper - great to know don't need subwoofer
Thanks for watching Luke
How far away from the wall would you personally place these? My set up is in an alcove so I’m a bit stuck. Picking them up tomorrow. I’m just thinking I might not get best use if they’re right against
If you're not producing then don't worry about it, if you are then experiment with positioning when you get them, in an untreated room (especially) it's not going to be as simple as saying place them x away from the wall and you'll be golden
I've had my set of 5's for years and love them. Are these worth the upgrade? I currently have to run my 50's with an old Logitech subwoofer to get any bass.
Yeah they are. Or just swing all the way up to the 8s for more bass.
I'm considering purchasing the HS7 or the HS8. I do want to make sure I get enough bass for my hip-hop/alternative music. Do the HS7's deliver good bass response or do they require a subwoofer? Thanks for the review and feedback.
+Nevan123 We mention this in our full review, check it out here: www.digitaldjtips.com/2015/02/review-video-yamaha-hs7-active-monitor-speakers/
Great speakers i bought a pair for home use and play a Yamaha Tyros 5 and my Roland RD 800 through but have just after great deliberation and reading on here that you don't need a sub with the HS7 bought the HS8S sub-woofer and will say for the purpose that i am using them for the sub makes a big difference and adds the deeper sounds that the 7s do not produce
Great review... I'm sold! The way you've described them sounds like just what I'm looking for.
Cool, let us know how you get on with them.
Been absolutely loving them since days after I made this comment. Glorious clear and neutral sound, and the frequency response is brilliant - definitely do not need a sub woofer! Great for producing, and a beautiful listening experience. My living room feels like a club when I have friends over 🤩
Glad to hear it!
Are these suitable for DJing as well as producing
Yes they are
Bought these in Dec. I write very Bass focussed rock music with a friend...Think Muse/Royal blood/janes addiction/ratm I saved long and hard..went to PMT Oxford where I could listen to loads of different speakers. I went to buy The KRKs but the bass was too boosted compared to these...I love the flatness of these speakers (true is a great word) and if you set up your environment properly they are brilliant..but the sound is focussed so you have to work on proper placement for height etc (they are near field after all).but for mixing they are superb, whether you will be happy if using them for Electronic music and want that massive sub sound then maybe the 8's would be better, but for real world at home recording these are spot on. Great review By the way!
bassmandudge nice review , thanks .
Do I need a soundcard for example like a Scarlett2i2 between the Laptop or DJ-Controller and these speakers or isn't it necessary to have an excellent sound?thnx in advance Phil ;)
Up to you really :)
Hey there, i have a few questions about using yamaha hs7 properly. First of all my room is very small (3m x 3m) and my speakers are currently 8cm away from the wall, so, is this acceptable or do i have to move them away further?
2nd question, relating to the 1st: can i compensate my lack of space with room control and keep them near the wall?
And now the last question, im a techno producer and i have a feeling i need a lower frequency response, i was thinking of buying the yamaha sub but im afraid i will have too much much low end with it. Now when i finish a project i have to run it through 2.1 gaming speakers with sub to clearly hear what is going on in the low end and its not only getting annoying to switch between them all the time but i'd really like to rely on only on proper studio equipment, so would you maybe suggest a yamaha sub? Keep in mind my room is 3m x 3m. Thanks to anybody who can help me out
How would these compare to the Audioengine A5+ and KRK Rokit rp6 g3's? I'm not a music producer, I just want a set of really good speakers for listening to music, gaming, watching movies etc
+Yuddy People seem to really like the HS7s!
The A5+ is absolute garbage compared to these. The KRKs are great, and have more low end (would be great for listening), but they color the sound. For mixing, editing and producing (at this price point) the Yammies are the champ.
jason starek completely agree . Hs7 for mixing but for listening I’d look at the krks . I mix on these ( metal ) and I listen back on some mackies cr4 as they colour the shit out of it but let me see how it will sound in a more normal situation .
Damn this guy rocks.
:D
nice review!!
Thank you!
This might be a novice question, but are these active or passive? I'm researching buying a record player (audio technica LP120) and I know that an amplifier is a necessary component, and I already own these monitors, I'm wondering if I need to buy an amplifier separately.
The LP120 has a built in pre-amp so technically you could just plug it straight into these speakers as they're powered (active)
@@digitaldjtips Good info! I wasnt sure if powered was synonymous with active. Thank you.
Great review. I watched this before opening the box. LOL.
Ha ha awesome.
Focal would be my pick.
is that in reply to my post?
Hey there! I would like to start DJ'ing and I am wondering which monitors I should go for that pack enough bass to play mainly techno music in my 32m2 bedroom. I picked up a Pioneer DDJ-RB as my starting controller and I would also like to connect the monitors to my personal computer. Which budget monitors would you recommend for this purpose? I was doubting between the Pioneer S-DJ50X and these.
Rokits are a good start.
Great review, thanks . Was going for KRK G4 5s, but found these at the same price :D
Nice! No problem
I have an important question, i have a pair of these and i just seem to be lacking bass, i'm a techno producer, so i am always checking the bass on 2.1 logitech speakers afterwards which in wrong, i want speakers that tell me the full picture. So my issue is that i have a very small room around 3m x 3m so my yamaha hs7's are about 10cm away from the wall which i know is not good, but i can not move them any further away so my question is, should i consider going for front bass port like krk rokit ones ? my room is also not treated yet. Getting a sub is definitely out of the question because of my room size although that's exactly what i'm lacking now, that bass feeling. So what would you suggest i do ? Thank you in advance.
Have you thought about a Subpac? subpac.com/
I have HS7’s, they are neutral in sound, which is why I bought them, I know what you mean when you say the bass seems to be low, but it’s because other speakers are shaped for the ‘smile curve’ I’ve found the best way is to work as much as possible between the speakers and a pair of good quality studio phones that also have a flat response. If possible check back and forth regularly while producing and mixing, and pay special attention with the speakers when making a quick master, once you’ve got the master, Chuck that on other systems to make sure nothings majorly out of whack. At the end of the day, you can’t guarantee what it’s going to be heard on in the real world, so don’t worry too much.
The other thing to do, is have another set of speakers on your set up, to A/B with, bag something of e-bay etc.
#loudness wars.
The HS7 sounds clear cause it's brutal honesty there, but the fullness is absent. I compared the HS7 with the big brother HS8 and the difference in depth was huge in my mind, but then again the H8 occupies alot of space and that was an instant showstopper for me anyhow. I'm mixing some voiceover recordings and the rest of the time it's just your normal desktop usage like youtube, mp3 files, web tv and some ripped movies. I think the HS-series will be too hard on my ears for that, so as a hybrid speaker (studio monitoring and hifi) they won't cut it. My search continuous...
Looking at these or the adam f7's for producing trance music but can't decide.
I am very drawn to this monitor. But I am very concerned about my placement in my room. I can probably set them a full foot (apps. .33 Meter) away from a Wall.
If it's just for DJing you'll be fine :)
@@digitaldjtips I’m Not a DJ. But thank you. That does help me.
I’ve just brought these and I’m having issues getting any bass from them. I’m using TRS cables with adapters to fit into my DDJ-400. Is this the problem? Do I need a RCA to XLR
No that wouldn't be an issue, what makes you think you're not getting bass from them? What are you comparing it to or using to assess that?
Quick question just got these but there are no signal indicators? Besides obviously our ears how can we know if the monitor is going beyond its capacity? Thanks
+Martin Rangel As long you're not running anything into the red, plugging in overly powerful equipment to them, or using them beyond a mid-size studio you should be fine
Great content as always, do keep up the good work!
Im currently looking for studio speakers which I also can blast on home parties. This seems like an affordable and sizeable set of speakers. Oh look, Phil still had hear in 2015!
I still have hair now!! Nah, you definitely don't want to use any studio speakers at home parties, you will definitely blow them one day.
Digital DJ Tips Thx for the tip! Blasting studio speakers is exactly what I was worried about. In that case, what affordable speakers would you recommend for a bedroom dj who also throw in some parties every now and then? Btw hope you did not get offended, I was just surprised by how long you guys been making these amazing videos! Everytime I search for something dj related I find you! Thank you for doing this and keep up the great work you do!
No problem glad to help! Don't worry we like a laugh around here :) Monitors aren't really any good for parties unless it's house parties, you'll want a proper PA when you start playing to more people. Anything by KRK, Yamaha or Pioneer is a good start in the monitor department!
i just want speakers to listen to music on my computer....will these be too much? how do I plug a pair into my computer? do i need extra equipment?
Not necessarily but you also don't need studio monitors for that, an audio interface will help you connect your computer to your speakers
@@digitaldjtips what do I need?
What are the types of speakers? What is a monitor speaker? is there a difference with another speaker? please anybody help?
yup there is a lot difference between monitor speakers and casual listening speakers casual speakers are meant to be sound good but monitor speakers help you to give true representation of sound either mixing or recording always mix on monitors they have very natural and flat sound
Thanks!
So it says speakers should be flat. Then in the mix you hear the bass is so bad so you EQ it up. Then it enters a DJ or consert scen with even more bass in the pre sound sets it just becomes bass all over the place. A speaker that is NOT flat but with more bass would give you the true sound that most are using as final sound. Or am I thinking wrong.
+zqxwy71 Ideally anything produced would be done on a flat system so the best sound design comes forth at that stage, though this isn't always the case and work can be needed. Each level beyond that has to be EQed for the room/environment because they're all different (usually is done by the live sound engineer). A bass colored system in a live setting could sound fine as long as the producer didn't overdo the low end while producing, in which case you'd have to do some EQ cutting on your end. It helps to know your tunes and take note of any that have unbalanced EQs.
+Digital DJ Tips Yea I wonder if many producers tend to overdo the low end. For example at some EDM festivals I felt the bass was mostly way to colored, more of rumble instead of clarity and punch, at least for the less famous DJ's, the main acts was better though so maybe the engineers just can't keep up with EQ on all the tracks.
I did listen to the HS7 in the store and I'm very impressed by the clarity. Though I still go around in doubt that I should get some KRK for my EDM producing, wich my store does not have so I can't test listen to them...
+zqxwy71 dude i have always thought the same thing, most people listen to music on speakers on typical stereo speakers with bass already boosted ect thats why i think krk rokits are a good bet, they are nicely balanced between studio monitors and normal listening speakers, yamahas would a be nice and a secondary monitor just to reference on imo but not as primary monitors
are they good for small house party, pool party outside? 30/50 people crowd?
DJ Tiofunk This is not what they are made for, you have to sit in the right position (max 2.5m away I'd say). Better get a real PA for your purpose
Thanks, mate nice demo love it
Please Help Me Out!! ..Anybody!
I am thinking of buying the HS7 next week. But the problem is that I have tiny tiny room(7ftx7ft).
Can I 'cut off' the low frequencies on these monitors so i can mix better .. I heard small rooms cannot handle low frequencies well.
I have no other space than my small room for now but i might move to a larger space in the coming years therefore, i want to get a 7 inch instead of a 5 inch.
So, does it help if i cut off the low frequencies on monitors?
They have frequency controls on the back of the monitors. You could also get some bass traps as well. Let us know how you get on! :-)
Hi What are they like for vinyl?
hi,
I am a techno producer and fanatic, so you can imagine i listen to that music a lot. I'm hesitating between buying the Yamaha HS7s and the Adam F5s since the price range is more or less the same. My question is if the Adam F5s will get me enough bass, because they are a bit smaller than the HS7s. BUT the Adam speakers have a front base port. I would truly appreciate some advise. thanks in advance
+daan compas
Heyhey!
You need to have listened to them both and only you can decide in the end which one you like better, since audio is also always a very subjective thing, BUT
I have listened to them both and I must say that I liked the HS7 far better and that' why I bought them in the end! As you said, they cost almost exactly the same, that's why it makes sense to compare them with each other, but (oh and btw, I also listen to Techno a lot / am a Techno DJ):
The bass of the HS7 is far heavier than the Adams, of course, since the driver is 7 inches big, compared to the 5 inches of the Adams. The bass port being located at the back doesn't have much to say since low frequencies can't be channeled in a specific direction [I can't say it in any other way, I'm not a native english speaker))
The HS7 have a much brighter, crisp and clear sound than the Adams (5er), which is also due to the size. I actually fell in love with the crystalclear sound of the HS7 right away, which was exactly what I was looking for since I've listened to Genelec monitors for the first time. If that's also your thing, no doubt you'd like the HS7 better.
Most probably the Adams F7(!) would sound better than the Yamaha HS7 though, the reason why you'd buy the F5 (or any other 5 inches monitor in that matter) would only be if you'd have a very (very) small room so that you'd be forced to buy 5 inch monitors. If you don't, and don't want to spend more money for the F7, I'd definitely go with the HS7!
Or you could just buy a used pair of F7. Buying second hand speakers is what I'd recommend the most, since consumers frequently renew their speakers over time and speakers don't lose their soundquality over time, if handled properly.
Hope that helped!
Yo, thanks so much for your tip!
Wath did you buy daan ? I have the same question as you let me know :D !
Just bought these speakers off the back of this review and have a faint hiss from the tweeter and hum from the woofer. Been told that is normal. Do yours have the same? Even with no audio cables connected to the speakers i still have the hiss and hum. Nice review btw :)
Switch the cable
You can use the XLR cables to reduce hum. However, there will always be more noise in these than inactive speakers. I am not sure why more people don't use a separate amp, but probably for less mess. Personally I use my own high quality amp with inactive speakers.
You might be experiencing what is called ground loop hum. It comes from poorly grounded electrical circuits. I had the same problem and got a hum eliminator and use xlr cables. They are reasonably priced and a quick fix.
Thanks for helping out all :) Ever get this sorted Matthew?
Great review, many thanks for sharing
No problem Scott :)
how far from the wall do you suggest i keep them?
Depends on the room size, but just play around with the spacing a bit
I feel a lack bass in them. Mid and highs are just clean as heaven tho :)
Is it a good idea getting the hs 8s to fill that bass?
+OoNaXoO Yes it is, all three are mostly sold as a bundle.
I see your post is 7 months old, so did you decide? In any case I just recently did an A/B test with HS7/HS8 and I think the HS8 delivered substantially more fullness and bass, but they are a bigger pair so you would need some room on your desktop or else it could look a bit overachiever'ish if you know what I mean. To me, none of them could cut it on the typical hifi level usage so I'm still looking as I'm not just doing vocal mixes but a fair bit of normal everyday listening from the Internet as well, and for that type of use I felt they took all the fun away.
sorry i`m foreign and don`t understand all your words... you sad that listening to music (not mixing) from hs8 is also pleasent and enjoying?
My best investment...they are amazing..
Cool, what do you enjoy the most about them?
the clarity, i can hear a lot of things i couldnt hear before...they are so flat now my mix in the car sounds great!!
Cool!
What's your opinion on these vs the Focal Alpha 65s?
Which did you decide for?
I can't decide between HS7 and Mackie MR624. Anyone has any toughts? Thanks in advance!
We haven't reviewed the Mackie and know the HS7s to be good, so go for those (in our opinion) :) Anyone else have a recommendation?
As long as sound purity is the priority, that is to say that as long as you want a true and transparent representation of the sound warts and all, the Yamahas are hard to match. Because they are designed to let music studio producers know precisely what is happening across the frequency range, they will not flatter music at all. In other words, they do not add colour like many other monitors do, and so they can sound very dry. If you only produce energetic, thick mixes in bass-rich, distorted and compressed styles like Dance and heavier Rock, you will get good results, but may find the detail is more clinical than exciting. If you create a range of styles including subltler genres, like orchestral and gentler vocal work with lots of atmospheric dynamics, you will benefit from the HS7s' honesty. They are made as a focused tool for engineering, not for entertaining.
Excellent upload, many thanks for sharing :-)
Thanks for watching
A big amount of details from a little while
Thanks for watching
Is the 399 $ Price just for one or 2 pair
+Gamer Active It's USD$299 each - $600 total
Are the active and powered the same or different
For all intents and purposes yes - when you see the term active read "powered"
Are they good just for djing?
+Phen0mable You can use them in smaller studios for recording, producing, etc. Hope this helps!
***** I understand. Thanks
did you mix the sound with these speakers because I can hear a bunch of distortion in the high end with headphones lolozlozlz
Great tut 🙏🏾
Thanks!
Looks like they're using foam surrounds.. You'll need a refoam kit in around twenty or thirty years time!
What’s better these or pioneer rm-05
They have different strengths and weaknesses. We have reviewed both, so check out our review of the RM-05 too: ruclips.net/video/E6c3n3PQ4kA/видео.html
A great help........Thanks
help I can't make up my mind. Yamaha hs7 or krk 10 3.
Both are solid! I would ask our Digital DJ Tips forum if you want opinions from the large DJ community there: www.digitaldjtips.com/forum :)
I would definitely recommend the yamaha's. The KRK's are really bass-y and muddy
very well done
Yamaha HS7 or M-audio BX8 Carbon?
+Ph3nomen0N Gameplay So sorry for the delay in response - hard to say exactly, as we haven't reviewed the BX8. I know a lot of people recommend the HS7, though. Why not ask our Digital DJ Tips forum (www.digitaldjtips.com/forum) what they suggest? If you're still curious, that is! :)
+Digital DJ Tips Thanks, but I already got the M-audio BX8 and they are great!
Anyone else get really annoyed when you're researching studio monitors, and the video's sound quality is total crap? -_- I don't know what mics were used or what other variables were at play, but YIKES. Credibility hit, for sure. BUT the information provided here is pretty good, so I do appreciate it.
Can you produce techno/tech-house with some good bass in it?
Sure you can but if possible, go to a showroom and listen to a pair with the music of your choice before you buy :-)
Typical Yamaha sound thats super accurate but many don't like it for that very reason. I have grown up with Yamaha and for my ears only Yamaha sound true.
Yeah, definitely depends what you want from a speaker
G4 or these ?
I've got a soft spot for Rokit's, great speakers - Scott
@@digitaldjtips thank you, I did think that was the case after a few reviews...they have been a good speaker for years but the g4 has just got that edge now...
No problem!
How do they compare 2 the KRK Rokit 6 speakers ???
rokit bass response is much more pronounced, lacks high end clarity and they sound fairy muffled as if there's a blanket sitting over the drivers. Pleasant enough for casual listening but for accuracy / mixing purposes the Yamaha monitors are far superior.
I hate that they have a rear-port for the lows....mhm
do i need a amp for these?
These are powered monitors, so no you should be good :)
Jack Monks always Remember. If it says "active" then they have built in amps so there's no need for an amp
these or KRK Rokit 6?
hs7 are better . krk exaggerate bass
you are right, but i do electronic music, and a lot of people told me that krk are more indicated for that type of music... what do you think?
i do electronic music too and i have the yamaha hs5. they lack bass but if you get the yamaha hs7 i think it would be good enough for bass. you can find the price of the yamaha hs7 for the same price of the hs5 in ebay so you should check that out. cheers!
+KERNEL Krk are more often pointed to reproduce music , and ideal for eletronic, but you still need the flat side of these Hs7 if you are producing music from scratch. Whatever you produce on this monitors, gonna sound exactly the same in any other monitors, making them trustable. Even just to listen music they are awesome. Can´t get more balanced..
why the hell wouldn't you use a sub with them?
You can if you want, many DJs do not have a sub in their setup though especially at home
@@digitaldjtips This is interesting. I always assumed that a sub was essential to get full full range. OR are you saying that the sub is only necessary to get bass to perform at higher volume?
They're expensive, heavy and not needed for simply mixing at home - for performing definitely
Can somebody please compare yamaha hs5 vs yamaha msp5...?
MSP5 worlds better
Does it have Bluetooth?
thank you
+Elasri Abdelmoula You're welcome :)
HS7
I dont think that you should ever rely on monitors for your bass, but thats just me.
Everyone has their own way of doing stuff, that's the beauty of it :-)
This guy omit to say that today there is no good music anymore like elvis presly, michael Jackson, tina turner, the beathles, pink Floyd, the bee gees, etc. So , i don't need costly studio monitors with costly complicated audio interfaces with 8 inputs. I then bought edifier s350db speakers set at only 300$ with digital inputs for my tv and computer audio where i listen for free pink Floyd, bee gees, elvis presly, michael Jackson, etc. I also listen my tv, so these interfave don't have tv. I can also stop to listen to this horrible audio mix that are just programmed distortion noises and they are no music. WE can all bet 20$ that no good music have been made on these audio studio monitors ever. If they say on which studio monitors pink Floyd the wall have been mix, than i will buy them today
Analog vs Digital recording.
