- The Yamaha HS5 powered Studio Monitors and the Yamaha HS8S powered sub-woofer are a serious combination. They offer a level of truth in listening that is invaluable in music creation, mixing and an out right pleasurable listening experience. Having moved into a space where I’d like control over the amount of bass and the amount clarity I was happy to try out the Yamaha HS5 powered Studio Monitors and the Yamaha HS8S powered sub-woofer.

"I was literally having a club experience in the crib..." I trust this man.
The Yamaha HS series of speakers are like that best friend who tells you how it is, not like a yes man who flatters you and tells you what you wanna hear. I have HS5s and am thinking of getting the HS8S to get myself some bass!
I want to thank you for explaining everything as you did and showing the setup and which cables go where and also with mixers and other equipment such as the turntables! Much needed and I have been searching for hours 🤦♀️
This helped me a lot. Now I'm more confident on my decision for the Hs5's and I also learned a lot from this review. Thanks Bro!
This was helpful to me... first place I found where it made it clear keyboard output goes FIRST to subwoofer input, THEN subwoofer outputs to speakers/monitors... I didn't know that!
Thank you for reviewing these I've been thinking about adding the sub for a while.
YES, at least I found a beat maker that knows what he's doing 👍🏾
@BBoy - That was a good review bro. I've been using Yamaha studio monitors for years and it is good to hear someone else's opinion on the monitors. I also like the fact that you said if you don't like the product you're testing, you will give YOUR honest OPINION no bs. I just subscribed to your channel to hear your other reviews.
Came in for a few seconds - ended up subscribing. KNOWLEDGE FOR WEEKS!!! thx man!
Gday from Western Australia. Just wanted to say thank you for your work. I bought the HS5's this morning. Learnt a lot from this.
I just bought this setup and I am so looking forward in hearing this setup. Thanks for the review, you made feel good about my investment.
Brilliant! I’ve been using HS5 s for at least 15 years along with my NS-10s. You’ve convinced me to buy the HS8S now
Thanks
How u liking it man
I wish you could come to my house and set everything up for me. I just got the Yamaha HS5. But i had to take one of them back to the music shop. It was making a popping sound. But the new one is much better. Thanks for making you're video. It has really helped me.
These speakers been sitting in my closet for 2 years. My bf got new ones. I'm bout to hook these bad boys up TODAY!
Thanks for the vid BBoy. Despite it´s an old one, this is the REAL and VALID oppinion that i was searching. Owe you a beer or two if you come to Spain! :)
Very underrated Chanel. I think you should try making podcasts because your voice is great!
Love this sub, its tight and accurate and lets my HS7 work their midrange and top end magic.
Great review! Thinking about adding the HS8S to my setup 🔥
Perfect man, thanks. I have the 5's, now I know I need the sub!
Still very helpful bro.
Getting my HS8 monitors with the HS8S subs tomorrow.
How have you like them so far?
Very nice review sir. I was wondering how to connect my hs8s sub to my hs7's. can't wait to go to my studio now! I've had the problem of low end translation so this is great
Thanks men, first YT video that explain cables and configuration ports, excellent, thx so much bru
Awesome review man, thank you!!!
Great advice throughout this video! 👍
Great vid BBoy 👏🏻✌🏻
Great review man
Amazing vid... Very informative! Thanks!
Top video BBoy! 👏👏👏👏👏😺
Very very helpful info in this vid!
And I think your attitude is dope; so relaxed, professional & passioned 😺🤙
Have a great day, and best of success & productivity in your work! ✌😺
XFAiDERse thanks yo! Thanks so much for the support. I’ll have a new review of the new Adams monitors soon. Stay tuned
Nice video and info , thanks man
excelent video! Thank you so much! i want o but a pair of these hs5, i have my homestudio in my romm which is not big, so i think a pair of hs5 are gonna be more than enough.
Do you need to reach behind to turn this sub on every session, keep it on, or switch it with a power bar?
I monitor my bass through the hs5.s, I need this sub, but have been great on their own at comfy volume.
Good review my brother..i have the Yamah HS 80..without the sub..
good review and advice
Super useful review ...thank you...!!
I have the 8 inch sub with the hs8 model monitors. Sounds great.
Thank you for this information. Really helpful. So I wanted to find out if it's possible to use other subwoofer products for the Hs5
how do you know how to adjust the trim etc? My studio had 2 inch foam wedges everywhere and high quality bass traps in all corners. Completely foamed up. What would you recommend?
I have the HS5s and the Rokit6s. I kept my Rokit6s turned off for a month and mixed only in the HS5s. What I noticed when I A/B'd to the Rokit6's, I was boosting my lower mid range a little too much with the HS5s. They're definitely not suited for mixing lows, that's for DAMN sure. But they are EXCELLENT on the top end. Something I don't get with the Rokits.
you used your KRKs to measure the flatness of your HS5s?
Headphones 🎧 for mixing lows a decent par some 2 hundred dollar ones
lows are the worst frequencies for not treated rooms and even the ones that are treated of course always reference
Nice video, Yamaha has a certain level of sound quality 🎛️🔊👍
great video C:
If all you're producing or mixing is dance music, hip hop, etc., techno, you want a setup that's tailored to that, preferably with one huge sub., or two powered subs with crossovers. Yamahas are more all-around pro. studio monitors for all kinds of music/mixing. Same with the JBLs, or even more high-end near-field monitors. But you won't get enough bass with 'em without a good powered subwoofer.
Thanks for the video would you recommend this to hook up to my Roland drum kit which I play along to songs with? can it handle the lows and highs frequency that drums have? Keep in mind this is only for my basement use.Not public gigging but I do enjoy a nice clear sound. I used to have EV ZXA1 tops and sub but it was probably over the top.Thankyou
Thank you for the information. Man, I really like how you explain things and how you also keep things REAL! YOU don't talk all ghetto...THAT will continue to take you far with what you are doing here in my opinion. I like how you keep it nice, real and serious. Please keep posting and keep up that great reviews and the serious attitude about sound and music yet with the down to earth/keep it real vibe! That is really nice. Keep rockin!
Great Jobe man!
Would you say if I was using the HS8 monitors adding the sub would be to much vs using the HS5 with the sub ? It seems you would get all lows you need with the sub that the 5's wouldn't have on their own
What’s the best frequency to dedicate to your sub?
I had them bad boys. They are tight. Although I didn't have the sub. I also had the HS80s. I was looking to work with surround sound. My money got funny and I had to sell them. Now that my money is back on point ill be buying a new set. This time I'm getting the sub.
Hello bro. Do you recommend the Yamaha h5 as a box for listening to music? I am not interested in audio monitoring at the moment, but if I do in the future, I can purchase the second box. I found the h5 more interesting with only one box due to the power provided compared to some other types like edifer that close the price, the range power offer is similar and don't give such a faithful sound. NOTE: I live in an apartment and I play the guitar with a 7w mini katana that have more power than enough for me. In other words, I don't need a high-powered box. Thanks.
I'd say go with a KRK5. These are lacking in lows. They were made ONLY for monitoring. JBL and KRK can pass by for just everyday listening and or recordings.
Can you cover the port to get a tighter bass response?
Which audio interface would you recommend for a setup like this?
HS8S + 2xHS5 + headphones (and maybe a mic)
Im thinking scarlet 2i2 but im not sure
do the yamaha hs5 woofer distort the original sound of the bass when the volume setting is loud (meaning do the woofers bounce so much that your not able to focus on the clarity of original sound)? i have krk 5's and the woofers bounce so much when in high volume that i cant focus on the original sound. anybody have an answer?
Good job man! I bought rokit6 g3 for a bargain , have you tested rokit6 pair with hs8s? Im curious because i find local dealer selling hs8s display one for cheap. I dont wanna bust my wallet buying rokit sub
Should I get the subwoofer with 6.5 inch Yamaha’s ?
I'm currently using Yamaha HS5 studio monitors and JBL LSR310s. I'd like to add two more active speakers to create a 4.1 surround sound system. How can I connect the additional speakers?
what amp are you using? I have the exact same setup as you but my amp wont let me plug in a sub from lack of inputs
I’m thinking of getting these for my torpedo captor x for guitar playing..would they be ok for guitars?
Aren't you using a stereo output from the mixer? I didn't understand that configuration
Hi sir.. you prefer HS8 or HS5 + subwoofer? My room around 4x4m.
Hi...for Film music what do you think is ok this subwoofer and HS 5 monitors ? Great this video. Ciao
Smart man! thanks
The sub goes down to 22Hz. Shouldn’t it go even lower. What am I missing here. Thanks - superb video.
i hv HS7 and i want a subwoofer wud u recommend HS8s to go for ? i want for mixing purposes mixing dance music
mEczem did you buy it?
Will these be good with a jbl310s? In my country there is no hs8s and if I get it from amazon it costs around 750 dollars compared to 500 with the jbls, which are also really good. I'm just affraid they're unpairable, sound signature wise or connection wise...
The HS8+HS8S is overkill but makes for a great experience. I mix/master with the HS8's and have the HS8S subwoofer for fun and games. I tend to like to listen to the final product on multiple different setups to get an overall feel for how the mix fits into different coloured sound systems.
TL:DR you mostly DO NOT need the sub if you use the HS8's. But the sub is definitely a good purchase if you want bas :p
I use the HS5's for my final mixdown analysis without a complimentary subwoofer. I'd say that even though the cutoff on the subs around 175hz-200hz is pretty noticeable on the monitors alone, you should be able to mix near perfectly without a complimentary sub and decent room treatment. It is all about training the ears, and these really do make that step of the process easy.
Hi you said not to keep the HS monitors close to the wall, but I see you have some sound absorbers behind it placed, could you tell me about it, cos for me I have problem of frequencies cos my room its not treated. Is there anything I could do for room control options my room should be the same size as yours
those absorbers he has dont absorb enough i think, there are tutorials on how to build your own with 10-20 cm thick rockwool. have that on my list, too!
i have the same virus dope. would u recommend a sub for an untreated room?
What a mess with this cables, man. Keep it up.
good vid
Yes, Sir
How do they compare to the Krk Rokits that you reviewed? which do you prefer for a non-treated bedroom?
Very different monitors. For beatmaking in general I'd go with the KRK s but for mixing I'd go with these. If I was gonna be mixing and beatmaking id go with these and the sub
these are good for mixing and making beats and bangin out i prefer KRK
Yo quick question can you buy one at a time?
I know this is an old-ish video, so it probably won't matter to the poster [Thanks for posting, regardless!], but for everyone else, if you're going to go with multiple sets of monitors, I don't think it really pays to go with two sets as relatively similar as Rokit and HS monitors. In this case, something like the HS set (with a subwoofer) and Avantone Mix Cubes or headphones or whatever would be more useful. The car monitoring thing is great, but A.) you might not have the time/patience to bounce everything down and transport it, and B.) headphones (even earbuds!) are going to REALLY give you a different perspective being super small drivers. Get things sounding as good as they possibly can in their native mix, period, then just check to make sure they still sound good when their VARIOUS future playback sources AREN'T good~shrug~
good input . thanks for watching and adding on.
Mixcubes cost get hs8 and a polk 12
My bass starts to smell like burnt oil, is this normal? is it giving problem?
So what chords do you recommend for connecting the HS5 and HS8S to a monitor controller and then running it to a interface?
Hello, great review man! just a question, what happens if i connect separetly the 2 HS5 and HS8S, is that necessarily wrong? I mean, from my Steinberg UR44 2 outputs directly to the monitors, and 2 outputs directly to the HS8S without sending signal to the HS5 from it. I will much appreciate your help. Thanks a lot, All the best!
Sounds like a phasing nightmare waiting to happen.
EVERYTIME some one walks in to my studio room, That ALWAYS look for the Subwoofer, (I Don't Have One)!
bro if u added some more comedy bits this would be lit to watch
HS7s with this sub... best combo!
MacMuffin117 I have HS7 and just going to buy HS8s, is the sub helpfull? I heard that it can create troubles
For those wondering if you need the subwoofer with the HS8 pair it depends on what you’re mixing.
I mix web series and short films, mostly narratives so I need the HS8 yo hear the low rumbles, cinematic bass drops and stuff like that. Ask yourself do you need to hear sounds that low in your mix.
Nice one
if you get the 8's in my opinion its no need for the subwoofer,
Naw bro, if you're mixing r&b or hip hop, a sub with these is definitely not a bad idea. I've have the hs8's for 8 years now and I can testify. That said, I've mixed complete records or 1 mix cube in mono, and I've mixed records with iPhone headphones plugged into my MacBook, so you can get use to anything and get results lol.
I agree.
DEAD WRONG!!
I got the yamaha hs80's and I recently added the HS8 sub woofers. The difference of my mixes are NIGHT & DAY!! Especially for EDM, Hip Hop, and R&B.
+Victor Floyd I always give final judgement on my mix through my Iphone 6s speaker if the sharp frequency is right on that you know it's mixed well
YoungBlaze if you get the 7s you really don’t need a sub
Awesome vid! Quick question, im upgrading from my s5's to hs8's. Should I replace them completely or have both hs5's and hs8's?
Both. You can hear more tone of the bass with the 5’s to make sure your bass cuts on small speakers
B.I.G bro
thanks
Can the Yamaha hs8s sub work with my Scarlett Audi interface ?
Of course.
Great in depth review! Quick question. The back of my focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface has 2 line outlets, a left and right. Do I need to connect both the left and right outlet to the subwoofer inputs? or just one? I'll then be connecting 2 studio monitors to the subwoofer outlets.
Both line out to sub then both monitors to sub
Can you put a different subwoofer on these hs5s
Yes
Can I get the krk
Are the hs8 also good enough without subwoofer???? Because my room is just 15 square-metres and I do trap producing, which means I need good quality for the 808s. Pls answer;)
No, there's no need for an subwoofer
i have yamaha hs7's and if you're trap producing, you don't NEED one. but you aren't going to experience the room feel, you'll hear your 808's for sure, crystal fucking clear, but you won't feel them in the room if that makes sense
Do you mean, that I can hear the sound of the 808 but can't feel the vibration of the 808? If it is this than I understand what do you mean.
6 months late here but if you have HS8 speakers you dont need a subwoofer but the low frequency really drops off hard around 35hz. The HS7 (6.5") or HS5 get a sub. A subwoofer will fatten up the bottom end really well, I suggest having a sub even with the HS8 but you dont NEED them.
how does the hs5 sound when playing vinyl from the turntable ?
Sounds pretty good as a matter of fact but I wouldn't use em for playing DJ sets out
would u use the rokit 6's for dj sets?
@@Bboytechreport Would you use pro. stage monitors for live DJ sets? Or, do most DJs these days use headphones exclusively?
J Dilla in the back haha
I wonder what HS stand for?
Home Studio
dude we need sound test loll
Rocky Ha I don’t think you can get a true sense of what it sounds like without direct audio and how do you do that with a monitor? You’ll really be hearing the room. So I opt to opine.
any points
Bro can I connect Yamaha HS5 2 speaker and Yamaha 100W Active Sub Woofer NS-SW050 to Yamaha MG06X 6-Input Compact Stereo Mixer.
Is this possible ?
@Recklessbliss Characternotcolor Thank you. I am already using with my equipment its working great
Connecting only 1 wire from the audio interface to the subwoofer, doesn't't that apply only for mono sound?
You are correct! He mentioned though in the video that he took out the other cable for the video because it wasn’t able to reach as he was turning it around (or something like that)
The sub sounds good with hip hop but they performed rather poorly with the techno beats I am trying to make. That being said, now that I got it, I am going to be listening to a lot more hip hop.
what are you talking about?
The sub should perform how it performs (depending on power level and crossover) no matter what you're mixing or producing. It might be the type of music you're making, or what you're making it on, that is the issue there. I dunno.
Can you turn off the logo backlight on the speaker? Very annoying if their in a bedroom.
Black tape does the job quickly and easily.
Peter Best
Not buying a speaker that is not user friendly. If one needs black tape then I'm off to the next product on the shelf. Case closed.
So you care more about the looks than the sound?
Nirvalica
Industrial design is a profession. If you need to add a pice of black tape to a brand new product to fix an obvious problem with a too dominating power lamp then the product should be re-made. I would never ever buy such a product. I picked another product without that flaw and I'm happy with that. A speaker must be user friendly in addition to good on sound. Engineers and designers need to work together on these matters, but some times they fail as the case is with the Yamaha speaker.
I imagine you're in the minority with that sentiment. I have them in my bedroom and have no issues with the lights. Here's another idea... turn them off when you go to bed.
