The professional music producer who mentored me recommended the KRK ROKIT 8 (or 5 for your small room), or Mackie MR8 (5 for you), both of which are cheaper than your Yamahas. Also check out M-Audio. If money is no option then Genelec and Adam are the Rolls Royces of reference monitors.
Well researched and well presented! I have a much cheaper method of improving the acoustics on those rare occasions I need to record something - I go into my small bedroom closet! All of the clothes do a great job of absorbing sounds, so, no reverb! I toyed with the idea of buying studio monitors, but since my audience is mostly RUclips viewers, and nearly 75% of those watch content on mobile devices, with their tiny speakers, I decided that simply using decent headphones when mixing audio was sufficient.
Hi Leon, I finally saved up enough money to purchase the pro level setup you described above Let me tell you, what an difference. I'm hearing sounds I never did before. This setup is going to bring my editing craft to another level. Thanks so much. ((::
Hey Leon, thanks for this great video. I purchased two speakers, subwofer and the Focusrite you suggested. I'm a little confused about the cables. I can't find Cable 3/4” TRS to XLR3M, even on Thoman website. Can you hep me out? Thanks.
Actually for the audio, Yamaha HS series is a great choice in its price range. If you would use them solely for music production I would recommend pair of HS7 or HS8's and ditch the sub. But you'll use the setup for movie material where sub gives you more information how it would sound on home surround setup. Good choice.
Great overview! Out of interest - what's the ratio of the area of your acoustic panels against the total surface area (walls + floor + ceiling) of your room? I'd be interested to compare with my setup.
170sq ft of walls (excluding ceiling and carpeted floor). About 43sq ft of acoustic paneling. There's some other furnishings in the room that break up the walls and help too.
Best video Ever! A lot of work and research + precise and clear information! Thank you. I have a question: I received a pair of Yamaha HS80M, can I stick with them or they're too much for just movie mixing? Thanksss again
One thing you forgot to mention is the audio mixer to move the knobs and sliders when you are mixing. If it sinchronizes with the editing software like Premiere or Media Composer, the better.
I'm currently using Yamaha HS5 studio monitors and JBL LSR310s. I'd like to add two more active speakers to create a 4.1 surround sound system. How can I connect the additional speakers?
Thanks for the video! I have the same speaker setup and I was wondering. Shouldn't you set the the Low Cut on the HS5s to 100 Hz when using them with the subwoofer?
I went with cheap PC speakers because when I was doing my setup, I didn't realize how important the audio would be. I have tinnitus, so listening to you talk is okay, but all those subtle layers of added audio like cloth movement get completely lost. I have to use over ear headphones to hear properly.
Excellent video for people that want to make their own editing space for audio and video, btw, where can I watch the film that's on you screen? That's definitely Switzerland.
nobody ive seen does a good job of explaining the volume relative to the hs8 , and crossover points everyone glosses over that and thats the most important part
iv just bought these speakers which they work perfectly fine until i open FL Studio and it says 'Couldn't create the main streaming DirectSound buffer? Can anyone help please?
Great piece! Only thing I think might be wrong is the cables needed to go from your audio interface to the inputs on the sub. Shouldn’t they be TRS to XLR3 Male (you suggest female in your diagram)? Anyways, great stuff thanks for the overview.
The more acoustic paneling you can put up the better! Anechoic chambers are covered from floor to ceiling in panels. But for typical usage lots of people recommend 10-15% coverage as a minimum but 25-35% coverage for best results. Placement is critical too.
Hello There i really need your help guys i am about to purchase my first pc i want to send the specs to you to check it out or what to swap basicslly thank you
@@FilmEditingPro I ask bc I have the HS5s but I’m looking to add a sub for the Low end I’m wanting haha I think you’re right tho Excited to get that low end
Don’t you get too much bass from the speakers given the bass comes out the back of them and they’re against a wall? Don’t Yamaha say not to put them against walls?
okay question the hs5 sub weak asf (in my experience in my home studio which may have accoustic problems) and the bass tone gets off depending on position in the room... going insane rn please help teh walls the ceiling the floor AHHHHHHHH
Loved the video excpe for the whistle music (which always sounds cheap and cheesy IMHO). BTW Why not used dedicated qulaity headphones? Not need for half the room changes you had to make for this setup.
What a gem coming across your channel! Do your yamaha speakers have a high noise floor when they are not playing any sounds? Or is there no hiss to them at all when you are not playing any sound?
Nice nobody has explained the part of the cables, only your video shows it! Thank you.
Glad it helped
It's nice to hear the right speech without too much water! Thank you. The roller is excellent.
This was en epic video. Amount of work and production is incredible. Thank you!
Video is of the top quality ! subscribed to this wonderful channel
Started watching with a grain of scepticism, ended up loving it! Fantastic work! 🚀

Such a great video, beautiful presentation!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Hope it was helpful with your work.

I' ve been running the HS7's with HS8 Sub, love it, highly recomend. Great video :)
Amazing clean setup and clear explanation 😊👌🏽

Those acoustic panels are awesome! need to make a few of those

That’s wonderful, James! That is a major upgrade. You’re going to have fun working with sound design and music on those speakers 😁
Back again, your content is absolute stellar!
Wonderful video! Loved it!
Fantastic video. Instant sub
Very thorough and helpful. Thanks
Heya Jimmy! Glad you enjoyed it, wanted to tackle the topic thoroughly.
I heartily recommend Yamaha active speakers. Wonderful things.
Great video. Very useful.

They are excellent. Even better than the HS5's as they have larger drivers so can produce better low frequencies.
One thing you forgot to mention is the audio mixer to move the knobs and sliders when you are mixing. If it sinchronizes with the editing software like Premiere or Media Composer, the better.
The audio interface will handle master volume adjustments which is essentially all most editors will ever need to use.
@@FilmEditingPro And what about the headphones for monitoring? are they the same as the speaker monitors?
Thank you for your time and input. What mics would you recommend?
What are you planning to use your microphones for?

do we need management speaker in the home studio?

Which monitor could You recommend for video editors ? 🙂
We’ve always been big fans of the Dell UltraSharp line 🖥️👍
How about the gear necessary to edit or create Dolby Atmos files?
Excellent video for people that want to make their own editing space for audio and video, btw, where can I watch the film that's on you screen? That's definitely Switzerland.

Semangat yah RUclipsr pemula, jangan mudah menyerah waalaupun yg nonton cmn sedikit semangat kakak
thank's a lot
I've been using Sennheiser HD 380 PRO Headphones to edit and record on location. What do you think about that?
Yes those are excellent and headphones are often a perfectly acceptable solution especially on location. 👍
Great video! Can I also ask what keyboard you are using?
I think it is by a company called Editors Keys
Random question: What are the lights used behind the monitors in the final shots of the video?
Aputure MC

Is there a formula for determining how many sq ft of acoustic panels are needed for the square footage of the room's wall & ceiling surface?
The more acoustic paneling you can put up the better! Anechoic chambers are covered from floor to ceiling in panels. But for typical usage lots of people recommend 10-15% coverage as a minimum but 25-35% coverage for best results. Placement is critical too.

So can this same setup be used for a turntable instead of a monitor??
Sure, the speakers and acoustic panels will be great for any audio setup.

Apollo x6,ax7,,micro monitors,Adams sub 8 and treatment costs about 4 grand pre pandemic
If you suspend the panels a couple inches away from the wall, they will be even more effective. Does your table/desk move up an down?
That's a great idea. Yeah the desk does move up and down.
I sometimes edit using only headphones & I'm thinking of upgrading. which models do you recommend.
We featured the Yamaha HPH-MT8's in a previous video: ruclips.net/video/JD-u6atI2Rs/видео.html
The Audio Technica ATH-M50's are also great.

The acoustic panels are needed for recording audio even if using headphones.
Great video. If you made a course an uploaded it on skillshare. You’d make at least £5000 per month on autopilot.
Is Reality TV editing course coming?
Yes! It’s on the release schedule but is likely around 2 years out.
@@FilmEditingPro Is it coming after 2 years? 😢😢😢

What a gem coming across your channel! Do your yamaha speakers have a high noise floor when they are not playing any sounds? Or is there no hiss to them at all when you are not playing any sound?
They have a very quiet hiss. Pretty typical for speakers in this price point.
